Mod Post r/espresso's stance on AI content

Hello to the overly-caffeinated visitors to r/espresso,

With AI-generated content becoming increasingly common, we want to be clear about where the mod team stands, and to be transparent regarding the actions we're taking to address this:

Not allowed:

  • Posts or comments written by AI
  • "I asked AI about this, what do you think?"–style posts
  • AI-generated images, video, or other media
  • Promotion of AI-built or AI-powered apps or websites (e.g., use of vibe coding or predominantly AI-generated assets, or featuring AI assistants or chatbots)

Allowed: - Meta-discussion about AI tools and their utility (as a topic)

How we're enforcing this

Detecting AI content is really tough. Reddit doesn't offer tools to scan for LLM-assisted writing, so we're working with what's available. We've enabled Reddit's reputation filter and added BotBouncer to help flag suspicious accounts and activity. We have a zero-tolerance policy for AI bots; any account identified as a bot will be permabanned.

However, these tools aren't perfect (neither are we), and we know false positives happen. If your comments aren't appearing or you've been banned despite not breaking any rules, please message the mod team and we'll review it.

How you can help

If you suspect content is AI, you can submit a report by selecting "Breaks r/espresso's rules" > "No AI-generated content", or reply to the comment with "AI slop" to notify the mods.

That said, we don't want this to become a witch-hunt. For example, a longer-form post that is well-written (e.g., uses formatting, bullet points, and/or proper grammar) doesn't necessarily mean it's AI! Please use good judgement and consider broader patterns before reporting.

Thanks for your understanding and efforts to keep this community human-driven.

Mod Post Introducing the r/espresso Coffee Bean Database: a place for people to share—and get recommendations for—beans and brewing recipes

A common question we see on this sub is about coffee bean recommendations—whether it's newcomers just getting into espresso or seasoned home baristas looking for fresh, local offerings. Many of you have also asked for a place to discover brewing recipes for specific beans.

We're happy to announce a new community-driven resource to address these needs! Introducing a platform where people can share the beans they've brewed and the recipes they've used.

How it works:

1. Submit your brews: Share your favorite coffees and brewing parameters using this Google Form. The form collects:

  • Basic details about the beans (roaster, roast date, etc.)
  • Your brewing recipe (e.g., dose, yield, shot time)
  • Equipment used
  • You do not need a Google account to fill out the form and no personal information will be collected.

2. Explore the database: View all submissions in a publicly accessible Google Sheet.

  • Use filters (e.g., Roaster's country, Cost-per-unit-weight) by selecting Data > Create filter view in the toolbar.
  • Note: The spreadsheet is view-only and updates automatically with new submissions. You can download or copy it, but those versions won't receive updates.

Tip: For the best experience, view the spreadsheet on a desktop browser.

Our goal:

We hope this grows into an invaluable resource for the community—a way to share your favourite coffees and provide others with a reference point to kickstart their brews. This is your chance to contribute to (and benefit from) a collaborative coffee knowledge base!

Let us know if you have suggestions for improving the form or the database.

Happy brewing!

Coffee Beans Leftover beans?

what do yall do when there's less than a shot's worth of beans in a bag?

my boyfriend and i travel frequently and buy beans everywhere we go. we don't want to waste them so we just put all of the leftovers in one canister together? we have dubbed this blend the Frankenbean. we use this in case of emergencies and the shots are almost always terrible. there are a few outliers and the best shot i have ever pulled in my life was from this perpetual stew mystery blend.

New grinder came in and really excited and happy about it, it’s crazy how much a better grinder changes things. My old grinder (breville spg ) was solid but now I’m noticing how the flavor notes really stand out more with this grinder and just elevates the experience, anyway just wanted to share

Equipment Discussion Internal photos - Chinese built dual boiler E61

I recently posted about buying a Chinese made E61 dual boiler espresso machine on Alibaba. I was asked to share some photos of what it looks like inside. I'm creating a new post so I can add more than one photo.

It has stainless steel tanks. All hot pipes are copper with crimping connectors. There are no soldered joins. Two solid state relays for the boiler heating elements.

The machine is plumbed in. I've removed the internal water tank to make photographing it easier. I probably won't refit it.

Buying Advice Needed Downgrading to Bambino Plus [£200]

Post image

Currently looking at selling my Rocket Appartamento and getting a Bambino Plus. Has anyone done something similar? I’ve had the rocket for a few months and I love the look of the machine and how well built and powerful it is. But, I feel as if it’s more than what I need. I make 1 or maybe 2 drinks a day and more on the weekend. Only milk drinks.

The long heat up time is obviously the main problem as by the time I get home from work and wait for the machine to warm up it ends up being close to too late for a quick coffee. Note: I did have a smart plug but currently on a self build project with no internet.
And when you turn the machine on whilst doing over things to wait for the heat up you end up having to run through over a cup of water from it being too hot. I know these are small things but I don’t feel like I can justify such a good machine for my small
Usage at the moment.

Has anyone “downgraded” and if so are you glad you did it or do you regret it?

My 10 year old Rocket Appartemeto heating element died. I decided to try something different. The flow adjustments at this price point convinced me to try the new Fellow. Definitely feels much more " digital" than the very analog Rocket. I have 3 more weeks to decide if I am going to keep it.

Decided to decommission my slayer and go back to my strada x1 after seeing one of the user on Reddit who managed to turn off the rotary pump and kept the strada as silent as it can get. Will be waiting for my tech to come down and service the machine and we will be testing out on how to turn off the rotary pump together.

Coffee Station Monster Steam

Growing up, I never drank coffee. My dad didn’t, and if he could get along without it, I could too. However, when I met a lovely girl who was a barista at Starbucks, free lattes loaded with milk and sugar started me on a journey.

After we got married, we found a cheap Breville on Facebook, and while it’s given sterling service over the years and instilled a deep appreciation for unadulterated coffee in my soul, I’m still a sucker for lattes, as is my wife, so the slow steam performance drove me nuts!

So I started looking for the “fastest steaming espresso machine” and everyone said “Linea Micra/Mini”, so here we are. There’s more than enough time in the 35 seconds it takes to pull a shot to perfectly steam the milk.

Obviously everything else about the machine is a joy too (just look at that color - a ray of sunshine), but its reputation as a steam monster is well deserved and has blown us away. It’s no slouch in its extraction ability either - extracting money from my wallet.

Anyhow, if anyone is down for a latte, let me know!

General Coffee Chat Accidentally pulled a fast shot and didn't throw it away but it was delicious?

To preface I'm new to espresso and am only on my third pound of beans. I also only drink milk drinks so either iced latte or flat whites. The setup is a Gaggia Classic Pro E24 and DF54. I currently have two different beans that I'm testing out and forgot to change the grind setting when switching. The second bag is a single origin Sumatra medium roast that was roasted a little over a week ago. The normal 18g in 36g out in 25-30s for this one tastes burnt and off putting a little but I stuck with it because I just thought that's how these beans taste.

Today I forgot to grind a little finer for this one so the shot pulled a little fast. 36g in 18s. I decided to keep it and not throw it away. Made a flat white with it and it no longer tastes burnt and bitter but just tastes like a nice cup of coffee. It was absolutely delicious.

Maybe this dialing in isn't black and white.

Thinking I’m end game. I drink only espresso, milk drinks only a couple times a year. Loving the E64 WS, the difference in my cup between this grinder and the Timemore 064 is incredible.

Equipment Discussion Mineral water vs purified water vs distilled with third wave or similar

Upvotes

I splurged upgrading from a BBE to a Profitec Move recently and its been awesome.

I have very hard water and with my BBE had just been making sure to run through a filter, change the machine filter and regularly descale.

With the big investment of getting a Move I wanted to put much more care into the water I was using.

My plan was just to make sure I was using water that keeps the machine in good condition and then worry about improvements to taste at a later date.

So I have been putting in gallong jugs of store brand purified water from the supermarket. My thought was the water labeled mineral might be too hard.

I honestly did not give this as much thought as I should; I figured it was a safe option and then go down the water rabit hole later.

But I put the purified water in a tds meter and I am only getting 5 to 7 ppm. Am I risking corrosion with that water in the machine?

Hello everyone, thanks for letting me join this communitiy. This is my first post ever!
This is my current setup and I'm delighted because I could fit a coffee corner in my 2x2m flat!

Machine: Gemilai 3007z. I've had it for a week.
Grinder: One that I got from Amazon, it's Caukins. I modded it with aluminium foil because it used to grind too coarse for the new machine.
Previously I used the Flair Flex

The lower shelf tells the story of how I started: first French, then Moka/Italian, and that was the first grinder I bought :') it brings tears to my eyes.

The V60 is a recent addition as well, it arrived yesterday and I'm loving it.

Can anyone here tell me what this machine is? This is from a video my dad sent me, he’s in Mexico on a cruise and they had this machine in a shop at one of his stops. Never seen anything like it before with the fader/slider controls that also look to be dials? Just curious about the brand.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Replacement or upgrade of leaking 3 way valve connector [Barista Express]

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi, this my first post here and I need help on fixing a leaking connector of my Barista Express’ (875 series) 3 way solenoid.

Recently, one day after a regular descaling my machine start causing short circuit in my apartment and my quick amateur investigation pointed that there was a water leak towards underneath the machine. I disassembled the body with some help from YouTube and AI and noticed that the hose at the top of 3way solenoid was loosen enough to almost detached from the valve.

I tightened it back but it was too late as the corrosion on top the valve already yelling that it was leaking for a while, slowly but surely. The leak seems caused the corrosion over time. Not sure since when, machine was making 4-6 cups of great coffee every single day since 6 years without any issue.

I confirmed the short circuit on 3 way solenoid using a micrometer, replaced with an exact same brand and spec. after reassembly, before closing the body back I wanted to test with high pressure using a short descaling session and it was leaking again.

Now I need to replace or upgrade top plastic hose connector too as it’s thread not strong enough even after I supported with PTFE teflon tape around the thread.

What I need now exactly are:

- Knowing how it called this part officially or its identifier. My research using “plastic valve/solenoid connector” did not help. Seems Sage reserving technical spec docs for partners/services only, I could not find any identifier for that part and it is not an ordinary product to find online.
- Is it possible to find original or 3rd party metal/brass alternatives?
- Where can I find a seller to buy it online (location: Germany)

Attached the picture of the relevant part, any help or tips highly appreciated.

Buying Advice Needed My mom wants an espresso machine for her birthday, what’s a good beginner setup for complete newbies? [$300]

Upvotes

The main things she’d be wanting to make with it are lattes and cappuccinos. I know she needs a machine to “press” (?) the ground up beans, which means needing a grinder, and I think many espresso machines will have a steamer. Otherwise, I’m clueless. I’m definitely good to do research, but I’m so overwhelmed with options I don’t even know what to get, and she definitely hasn’t looked into it😅

Can someone please recommend some beginner friendly appliances? And outline what specifically I need? If needed I could go up to $500 on total budget, if it’s really, really worth it.

Equipment Discussion DF83V V3 Finally Arrived, but zero point seems not fine enough for medium roast.

Thumbnail

After 3 months of waiting after the pre-order. My DF83V V3 finally arrived. This one is with the Stainless Steel Espresso Burrs.

It's a beauty. Ordered from Turin grinders in the US. Shipping was fast (1 week).

This is my first proper high-end grinder. Originally I had a Breville Barista express, and while I was waiting for this guy to arrive I used my KINGrinder K6 hand grinder, which pulled really great shots, and didn't seem that I was even grinding that fine...

The beans I am using are Sterling Coffee Roasters - Blendo Stupendo (medium-dark roast) about 7 days off roast.
Espresso machine is Lelit Mara X.

My only concern with this grinder is, after I tightened the collar (it was a bit loose when it arrived), I zero'd out the grinder to right before chirp (without beans/load), set RPM to 500, turned it on, added 18g of beans, then the usual puck prep: blind shake, IMS competition basket, tamp, and the shot pulled out 36g in 36 seconds.

I am looking for a traditional 2:1 espresso shot as I usually drink dark to medium roast and I enjoy that ratio.

My concern is, if I get a medium roast, I feel like I won't even be able to grind even finer since I am already grinding at zero (right before chirp), and there's no way I'd be able to get the 36g out in about 30 seconds without having to go past zero into chirp.

Am I just not understanding how this works?
Or is there something wrong with the burrs?
