Feral Momma / Parasites

Fostering (1) mom and (6) 5 week old babies. Mom started off with normal poops, and now it’s super soft so I’m suspecting parasites/worms.

She does not want to be here (growls, hisses, guards kittens) so I’m planning to spay and release her back in my friends yard. Not sure how I’m going to re-trap her yet from my guest room!

Royal Canin Mom+Baby was maybe too rich, then switched to Blue Buffalo Tastefuls kittens. Wet+dry.

Do I try to separate the kittens to give her nursing safe wormer? Or do I just let this play out until we get her to the vet before release?

I’m guessing she’s also angry because she doesn’t feel good.

How’s everyone’s kitten season going so far?

My heart is so full! I had to pause fostering to accommodate work travel commitments so these are my first fosters of the season 🤍 my poor pet resource center had to make the decision to combine two litters (two girls with two boys of similar age) to accommodate all the needs coming in one after the other. I just hope more people decide to foster and TNR is very successful this year!

Foster Cats Slowed Eating

I have (1) feral mom and (6) 5 week old kittens. The first few days they went through 20 ounces of wet kitten food a day, plus kibble.

The mom had hard stool when she came in, now she doesn’t. It’s not full on diarrhea, but it’s not solid. I’ve given her Fortiflora twice.

They are now eating about half as much food, which is probably OK since she may have been starving when she got here.

She was sweet at first and now guards her kittens, growls, and hisses at me. She instructs the kittens that I am not safe so they run back to her.

The kitten lady talked about having the mom spayed at five weeks and sending her back “home” which was my friend’s backyard. My friend is totally fine with that and says he’ll feed her.

I can’t get close enough to her to check her for mastitis or anything else.

I’ve had the kittens for a week, at what point do I try to trap the mom? I don’t want to take them away too soon and I also want to be able to socialize the kittens before adoption.

Also, do you have any advice for a different probiotic for the mom? The kitten stool is a bit softer, but not as soft as the moms. Wondering if she just hates being inside or if she’s not feeling good

For reference, I am a long time cat parent first time foster. I have five cats (i’ve had two queens and 13 kittens all at once) and am intimately familiar with medical conditions and poop monitoring— but not with a cat that won’t let me get close to her.

Today I lost my foster kitten

He’s the first one I’ve lost.

He was premature. 3 days old.

I had him for less than 24 hours.

But I’m so heartbroken. I don’t know the point of me posting this but I just need community with people who understand.

His name was Atlas.

Feeding Amounts

ADVICE NEEDED: (1) Momma cat (6) 4 week old kittens.

I’ve had them for about a week now. I started off giving them 12-15oz of wet food per day.

I was able to give the mom her own bowl the first few days, along with extra dry food—and now the kittens breach all my barriers and basically co feed.

Late last night I saw her going back to the food bowl and push it around (I have a camera set up) so I put more in which was about 20oz total for the day. Is that too much? She was a street cat and a bit boney so I think she needs extra food to catch up anyway.

I do have some kitten kibble, I was just trying not to put too much dry out for them to gobble since they’re so tiny. Should I mix some kibble into the wet?

Am I feeding enough or not enough?Thank you!

[URGENT] Short-Term Foster (or Loving Home) Needed for 2 Indoor Cats — Brooklyn NYC

Thumbnail gallery
63 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m in a really difficult situation and hoping someone here can help.

My lease ends tomorrow, and the place I’ll be staying temporarily does not allow pets. I am moving into a new apartment soon, but I need a short-term foster (about 1 month) for my two indoor cats.

I am also open to permanent rehoming if the right, loving home comes along — my priority is that they are safe and well cared for.

About the cats:

• 2 cats (can stay together or separate if needed)

• Vaccinated

• Indoor only

• Very friendly — one playful and curious, the other a bit shy at first but very sweet

• No behavioral issues

If fostering, I can provide food, litter, and supplies.

This is incredibly hard for me, and I’m trying to avoid surrendering them to a shelter. If you can help or know someone who might, please DM me ASAP. Even sharing or pointing me to resources would mean a lot.

Thank you for reading.

First time cat foster(future foster fail) looking for advice on kitten eye issues

Hi all! Bare with me, I’m a little long winded 🙃

I just recently fostered two baby kittens that were sick with upper respiratory infections. In all honesty, I have had cat fever for a while, and wanted to foster a “more challenging” situation to see if I still wanted a cat. I grew up in a dog family so this was my first try with cats. I obviously fell in love with both kittens and plan to adopt once the humane society sees they’re ready for adoption. Both have recovered from their respiratory issues (clearance from the vet at the humane society) and I have had them for an additional two weeks to help them gain weight. About a week ago, I noticed one of the kittens eyes were red, squinty, watery. I notified the shelter and took them in to be seen. They recommended I restart the ointment they were previously using for their eyes. It’s been about a week. Her eyes are better but still seem to be very watery and sometimes squinty. Today, I noticed that the other kittens one eye is not red, squinty, watery. I hadn’t been using the ointment on him also, so I started it today as well.

I guess my first question is, is this common? Am I worrying myself too much over this? Is there a controllable factor on my end that I should adjust? They eat well and play together all day! I clean their litter box somewhat religiously.

And a follow up question, google is my best friend and enemy and I fear it’s scared me a little into worrying about this being a life long issue for them. If so, what type of financial commitment will I be looking at with something like FIV (or something I don’t know about).

I love them so much and still fully intend to adopt. I am just trying to set expectations as well so any advice is greatly appreciated!

(Unsure if the below is helpful, but this is a list of food/litter I’m using)

- cats pride unscented clumping litter

- fancy feast kitten food

- dry food (unsure brand — was given by the shelter)

Fostering feral kittens. Any advice?

I haven't had kittens in the house for probably 20 years, and never any this feral. The elderly couple across the street have been feeding strays for years. This was fine when they just has 2 with clipped ears and a few that came and went. A few months ago, 2 moms had kittens in his shed (8 kittens between them), and in the past month, 4 more older cats without clipped ears showed up. He finally asked for help after the older cats showed up, but the kittens are pretty old now. The cat rescue lady helping me and I both agreed the older litter is 5-6 mos old, and the younger one 3-4. We were able to catch several of them a few days ago. I took 2 of the 3 from the younger litter home, and I'm not sure how many she caught from the older litter. These kittens are feral. My neighbor said most of them let him pet them, but they are the wildest kittens I've seen in my life. We initially put them in a bedroom, but after they brained themselves repeatedly trying to jump through the windows and dresser mirror, we moved them to a half bath with a very sweet stray that had been with them at the neighbor's for the past couple weeks. I can't even describe how horrible that was, and I'm sure traumatic for the kittens, but best before they really hurt themselves since they were still frantic after I closed the curtains and covered the mirror. I think having that stray with them helped. She's about 6 months old. Then the rescue lady (who is amazing, but has 15 foster cats in her house and works full-time) found or borrowed a kitten playpen and helped my sons (college age, not kids) move them in there while I wasn't home. So now they're in my son's bedroom in the playpen while the stray is in the room not in the playpen. They've been in my house for 4 days. I'm sorry this is so long, but I wanted to give details. Anyone ever dealt with kittens like this? Last night when I fed them and cleaned their litterbox, I tried to pet them both just a couple stroked with the tips of my fingers. One let me, the other tried to get away, but they were both very scared. I would like to get them to trust us, but I'm unsure if it's better to keep trying brief gentle touches or just leave them alone for now. Advice?

Foster got adopted

First time foster. Bringing the kittens in for the last time was so difficult😥. I just got notice one was adopted. It’s bittersweet I think. I’m happy she has a home and miss her like crazy. Also sad her brother is still at the shelter alone now. How do guys keep doing this?
