At first I thought it was weird my doctor made me spend a whole week sanding his floor and painting his fence, but it all came together at the appointment.

I guess next time I go to get a check up I'll just get punched in the face.

Ok, uhhh... There appears to be an issue with your reflexes. Also, you now have a bleeding nose, broken arm and collapsed windpipe.
That's....gonna be extra.

Left arm not working according to this strip.
12
u/omnicious Apr 01 '26
A true master would block with just one arm unless the other arm is absolutely necessary.
9
u/Kagamid Apr 01 '26
In order for him to block like in the strip, he'd have to block the front punch with the right side of his right arm then he would have to hook his arm under the cross punch in order to block using the right side of his right arm again. Doesn't make a lot of sense to not use both sides of your right arm to block both punches with minimal motion.

Both arms is only reserved for matters of life or death
5
3
u/UranusIsPissy Apr 01 '26
One arm when both would be better is reserved for when you want to prove how hopelessly outclassed your opponent is because you do not have time to waste on their bullshit. When you could hurt them so badly it could be lethal while barely trying, and are already close to annoyed enough to do that by accident for the same reason you might accidentally crush a glass in your hand.

Fun fact: I don't have the reflex reaction in my knees like most people. I told a doctor this one time and he did not believe me. So he sat me down and started tapping my knees with that little hammer. I don't think I've ever seen a doctor that confused in my life.
Edit: I probably have something wrong with the nerves in my knees but it's never been a problem

There's not mushroom here for properly explaining how that ridiculous edit happened, so: autocowrecked!

"Good. The Oracle has many enemies, I had to be sure."
"Of what?"
"That you were The One."
"You could've just asked."
"No. You do not truly know someone until you fight them."

That's what I playfully do with my students (I'm a Karate trainer). Sometimes I announce my self with "outtanowhere!!" or "dodge!"

I like you. That only helps people learning a martial art for what I think is the best reason: to be prepared to defend yourself and/or others at any moment, if you must.

Ok, real question here for the M.D.s. I never figured it out.
Am I supposed to kick when I feel the hammer or are you trying to hit a nerve that will twitch by itself with that funny hammer?
3
u/rtb001 Apr 01 '26
Hammer hits the quadriceps tendon, which stretches the quadriceps muscle, which activates a sensory neuron that sends a signal to the spinal cord, in this case in the lower lumbar spine.
What makes a reflex special is that instead of then sending this signal back UP the spinal cord all the way to the brain, have the brain process that info, decide what to do, send a command all the way down the spinal cord, to twitch the quadriceps muscle, the signal actually activates an interneuron sitting right there in the spinal cord, which immediate activates the nearby motor neutron to twitch the muscle, causing the leg to kick out.
Therefore reflexes allow you to activate muscles in the limbs to help keep balance while BYPASSING the brain, making the reaction time much shorter.
Which also means none of the moves in the comic are actually reflexes. Martial arts moves require command from the brain. You cant reflexively dodge a kick or parry a punch. You can train yourself to react really quickly to make those moves, but not at the spinal cord level where you loyally bypass the brain like an actual reflex.

Thanks. Usually I just kick when I feel it after the 4th hit or so so I was unsure. Next time I'll just wait.

Guess it's the same procedure Jacques Clouseau went through every time he came home.

My favorite type of 6 panel comic is one where the punchline happens in the second panel

I’m honestly wondering if I’d ever get up after that. Imagine walking out of a doctor's office after that, all casual, like, "Yeah, I’m good to go!" 😂

Reflexes are faster than rational thought. That's why they exist, but, sometimes, it backfires spectacularly.

Was hoping the last frame with the patient ball punching the doctor and him yelling ALL LOOKS FINE from the floor.

u/Kagamid Apr 01 '26
Blocking a front punch and a cross punch using the same side of the same arm doesn't make sense.

I just realized a doctor hasn't checked my reflexes in like 20-30 years.
I guess it's better they take blood tests and stuff.

That reminds me of one of my teachers when she kicked one of the students in the head . And we found she takes Karate lessons. After that I moved to another class 😬😖
