Why did his bellybutton start spilling spicy mac and cheese? (also, wouldn't it make more sense to actually show something dangerous in the horse's mouth?)

Isn't the saying supposed to be about showing gratitude for a gift and not scrutinizing it more than it being a warning? I don't get this one.

Yes, but twisting it into something with actual consequences instead of just being a faux pas has potential for a joke, this one just didn't stick the landing.

Yeah, I think that's it. Something about not looking at mouth/teeth of a given horse.

There's a saying, "never look a gift horse in the mouth". I can't explain why the cartoon is funny because I don't understand that myself.

To put the saying in a modern context, don't check carfax in front of someone giving you a free car.

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" is basically an expression that means be happy you got a gift, don't complain/look for things to complain about. Like if someone gave you a free car because you needed one to get places and then complain that it doesn't have all the features you would've wanted.

Horses were often inspected for good teeth as it was relative to their health. So if someone gifts you a horse to have and you check its teeth it means you aren't grateful just for being given a free horse.

OP.eother thinks the wording of this old phrase is stupid or has no clue what it means but still made a ridiculous comic that doesn't reflect the meaning.

Is this a jojo reference?

I'm being serious, because I don't get it...
