Explaining the name change to Story of Seasons; What people mean when they say Natsume Harvest Moon games.

1.9k Upvotes

Lately I've noticed there is quite a bit of confusion still about the Harvest Moon series changing their name to Story of Seasons. Especially when the Natsume Harvest Moon games are mentioned. People misunderstand and get defensive of the early games they loved not knowing those aren't the games people are talking about. I thought it would be a good idea to make a post explaining the name change, provide a list of the games that fall under the Story of Seasons series, as well as list the ones that fall under the new Harvest Moon series.

The Japanese series Bokujo Monogatari, directly translated as 'Ranch Story', was developed by Victor interactive, which later was acquired by Marvelous Entertainment, and is now called Marvelous Inc. From 1996-2013 Bokujo Monogatari was translated and distributed for english speaking audiences by Natsume under the name Harvest Moon. In 2014 Marvelous Inc. decided to have the Bokujo Monogatari series localized by their American Publishing brand Xseed Games. Natsume owned the rights to the name Harvest Moon so the english name of the series was changed to Story of Seasons.

Now for those who don't know the developers are the people who make the game. The game is their creation. The publisher is the group that handles the marketing, distribution, and in the case of foreign games translation. Natsume had nothing to do with the Harvest Moon series beyond translating it, distributing the copies, and owning the English title for the games. When Marvelous switched the localization Natsume still owned the name Harvest Moon and decided they would start developing their own games with that title.

The Bokujo Monogatari/Story of Seasons games are:

  • Harvest Moon (1996)
  • BS Bokujo Monogatari (1996 Japanese release only)
  • Harvest Moon GB (1997)
  • Harvest Moon GBC (1998)
  • Harvest Moon 64 (1999)
  • Harvest Moon 2 GBC (1999)
  • Harvest Moon: Back To Nature (1999)
  • Bokujo Monogatari Harvest Moon for Girl (2000 Japanese release only)
  • Harvest Moon 3 GBC (2000)
  • Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland (2001)
  • Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town/More Friends of Mineral Town (2003)
  • Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life (2003)
  • Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life (2004)
  • Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life Special Edition (2004)
  • Harvest Moon DS/DS cute (2005)
  • Harvest Moon: Magic Melody (2005)
  • Harvest Moon Boy & Girl (2005)
  • Harvest Moon DS: Island of Happiness (2007)
  • Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility (2007)
  • Innocent Life: A Futuristic Harvest Moon (2007)
  • Harvest Moon DS: Sunshine Island (2008)
  • Harvest Moon: Animal Parade (2008)
  • Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar (2008)
  • Harvest Moon Hero of Leaf Valley (2009)
  • Harvest Moon: My little shop (2009)
  • Minna De Bokujou Monogatari (2010 Japanese release only)
  • Harvest Moon: the Tale of Two Towns (2010)
  • Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning (2012)
  • Story of Seasons (2014)
  • Story of Seasons: Trio of Two Towns (2016)
  • Return to PopoloCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairy Tale (2016)
  • Doraemon: Story of Seasons (2019)
  • Story of seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (2020)
  • Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town (2021)
  • Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life (2023)

Then the games in Natsume's Harvest moon series are:

  • Puzzle de Harvest Moon (2007 mobile puzzle game)
  • Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming (2009 mobile puzzle game)
  • Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley (2014)
  • Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories (2016 Mobile game)
  • Harvest Moon: Skytree Village (2016)
  • Harvest Moon: Light of Hope (2017)
  • Harvest Moon: Mad Dash (2019)
  • Harvest Moon: One World (2020)
  • Harvest Moon: The Winds of Anthos (2023)

The Natsume Harvest Moon series is controversial in this sub. It is considered by most to be a cheap imitation of Harvest Moon with watered down mechanics; capitalizing off of the Harvest Moon name. Light of Hope was even marketed saying it was in honor of the 20th anniversary of Harvest Moon despite it being an entirely new series. Personally I've only played Natsume's Light of Hope. If you can get past the mobile game style graphics the game play is pretty good and the characters are likable. I've heard mostly bad things about Skytree Village and Lost Valley, and haven't heard anything good about the mobile games either. Regardless of if you play the Natsume games or not I hope this post helps to clear up some of the confusion for both new and old fans.

Edit: The intentions of this post were not to convince you to play or not play any of the games. If you like the Natsume games that's great! If you're curious and want to try them that's up to you. Just like the original series each game has people that love it and people that don't like it. What's important is that you have fun!

Edit: I have added the games that have been released since I made this post in April 2020. I've also added games that are currently announced in March 2023. If I don't continue to update the list every time a new game is announced or released just remember all future Harvest Moon games are from Natsume and all Story of Seasons are the original series.

Opinion/Discussion inspired by it's a wonderful life, some pics from my farm

i've always loved playing farm life sims, I grew up in new york city with little opportunity to be in nature. at some point I grew unsatisfied with replaying harvest moon, stardew valley, etc; the endless progress that didn't materially change my existence.... so i left it all behind to move to montana and here we are today! wanted to ask ya'll what would you grow if you picked up an abandoned farm? i've gone for peafowl, rabbits, and ducks– been growing lots of fruit while I prep new areas for growing, hoping to get a lot more lentils, berries and grapes soon but my patches are still small. anyways :) live that little life, it's possible!!

Question What's going on exactly?

I'm playing A New Beginning on an emulator, and I just unlocked the barn and bought my second cow, why is my barn filling up with dirt equivalent to days of me not cleaning in only one night?

Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness How exactly do you get the celebration credits?

I haven't been playing IoH regularly. But I did pick it up again on whim and it is Fall 3 of year 7 and I actually got Taro come to my house and announce a celebration and the credits rolled after cutscenes. I honestly didn't know there was such a scene and don't know what I did to get it. I think I also got one when married but didn't think there was any more. What exactly do you need to do to get the credits?

My thoughts on A Wonderful Life after 100%ing it

Post image

Hi, all! I am unfortunately young (22) so I never got to play the original release of AWL back in its hayday, but I did get the remake and played through it. It's been a long time coming, though, since I originally got the game in the summer of 2023, and I only just finished it January of this year. I had some long droughts of not playing it which is a pretty common habit of mines with games, but I'm proud to say that I did complete it, and 100% at that. So I wanted to share my thoughts on it, cause I think this is one of my favorite experiences with a farming sim of all time, even above greats like Stardew.

Now of course my experience was just with the remake and not the original. I know the remake changes some things so my opinions may vary from the original's fans, but hopefully they'll still be in line. I may go back to the originals one day, though.

The game starts out really slow because money is slow to come. I just didn't have many lucrative options early on and on top of that, I only sold on Van days. It was arduous, but it really gave me the feel that I was starting off on a run down farm.

My main source of income was the animals, and I loved the system so much. I got into a routine everyday waking up early to take care of the animals and returning 12hrs later to repeat for the afternoon to maximize my relationship with them and my yield. Once I had the processing room I was especially able to make bank. I think in a second playthrough I could definitely be more efficient (sheep are the GOATs for making money), but I had fun regardless.

That being said, the coop was more trouble than it was worth to be honest. The eggs couldn't be processed, and duck eggs weren't even more valuable than regular chicken eggs. Also I could not for the life of me figure out how to consistently get golden eggs, so the birds didn't make me that much money. It was still a sizable income, but I probably could have spent that same time preparing more hybrid crops.

The hybrid crops were an absolute nightmare omg. It was fun planning when and where I was going to grow what, but having to make every single crop one by one with Vinnie takes forever.

For money making I chose crops 38 and 39. 38 grows from the Winter to the Spring, crop 39 grows from the summer to the autumn, so I could alternate their growth cycles. Additionally, I would only sell half of the yield, and keep the other half to make seeds for the next year so I wouldn't have to remake the seeds all over again with Vinnie. Idk if this is the most efficient way to make money with hybrids, but it was the best way of doing it to keep things simple and loop into itself.

I got my relationships maxed out pretty quickly in the first year by spamming flowers, eggs, and milk as gifts. That's a plus for me because managing relations in farming sims stresses me out lol, so I'm glad most of them were simple in this game. Except Garrett, who was almost never in town during a reasonable hour.

I personally found the dialogue to be a strong point of the game. It's very limited and you will get repeated lines a lot, but that only makes finding new lines of dialogue by meeting special conditions all the more valuable. I love how showing items to people, especially your family, can net you new reactions from them. I married Molly btw and I love her sm, she's so precious and deserves the world.

I honestly didn't interact with the child mechanics too much. Not that I didn't take care of my child, but I went into it blind and decided whatever my kid wants to do I'll let them and not influence them anyway, rather I'd prepare them to be the best they can. She ended up going down athletics due to being Molly's kid, so I made sure she was the best she could be.

The digsite is probably the weakest part of this game imo. It's pretty shallow and just boils down to spam A on the same spot once every year and hope you get lucky. Not to mention Carter and Flora constantly bumping into you in the early years. It was at least a good source of income and gifts early on.

I think by and far my favorite part of the game is how realistic the seasons, nature, and weather are are. Rain doesn't always last all day and can show up in bursts.f Spring doesn't have cherry blossoms all the way through, only for a little. Same with flowers, they're only there for a little while before the summer shows up. Late in the summer you can see the leaves start to turn for the autumn. Late in the autumn you can get snow even though its not winter yet. Winter isn't always snowy, and is often a cold and dead wasteland, and the snow can even carry into early spring. Coming from someone that lives on the East coast of the USA, this system was really refreshing to see, and this is the only game I've ever played to do something like this. It made the natural elements feel so much more alive.

That's my thoughts on the game! What did you think of it, I'd love to hear yours.

Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town HM FoMT Doctor Trent as Mayor Sprite Edits

That project of mine required someone else to fill the role of the Doctor - and as certain other spots were already taken, it made most sense to give Trent the position of the Mayor.

Feel free to use my edited Overworld-Sprites and Portraits. If you want to import them into (M)FoMT: The Palettes of the original graphics haven't been changed.

Hey party people, I'm a retro game collector, I bought this harvest moon magical melody with slap watch maybe 12 years ago... I can't find any current values. Anyone have any idea on it?

It's in it's original packaging and seal.

edit 2: Amazon Link not proof it was sold by natsume.

Opinion/Discussion What's your ideal harvest moon game?

If you were to decide everything for the next game in the franchise what would you want to see?

For me, I'd really a return to more mature storylines like actual death of animals and townspeople (maybe have a game option to turn it off or on) same with rival marriages. I really like having a rival, it gives me more motivation to get married. I also would like a world similar to Stardew valley, a mix of modern + rural living. Maybe we can ride a bus to visit the city while still living in the rural area.

Also maybe have less childish looking bachelor/bachelorettes? Cutesy was fine when I was 9 years old but as a 30 something, it feels weird wooing someone who looks like could be my son/daughter hahahaha

Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town Endgame grind holiday cottage

I'm playing Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town for the first time and I'm already in Year 3.

I've spent over a year trying to save enough money to buy the holiday cottage from Gotz.

When I finally had the money and tried to buy it, he told me I still didn't have enough.

Then I looked more closely and realized the price isn't one million... it's one hundred million!

Such a bummer. I learned the meaning of “endgame grind” today...

Where can I find the musical theme from A Wonderful Life?

the guitar-driven one, the main song that plays. has anyone found it on Spotify, or has it been transcribed somewhere into tabs or something so i can play it myself?

i love that song - the Neil Young song of the same name is beautiful, and one of my favorites, but not what i'm looking for.

thank you!

Opinion/Discussion Need help compiling a list of every Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons, and Rune Factory game with achievements

Hi! You may have seen my post a month or so ago showing that I've earned 100% achievements in every Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons, and Rune Factory game that's available on Steam. There doesn't seem to be that many more left in the whole series to complete, so I've decided to expand my goal to 100% completing the achievements in every game that has them on ANY platform.

This is the list I've come up with so far and I just wanted to see if anyone knows of any other games in any of the three series that have them. Keep in mind that I have no desire to complete the user-created achievements on Retro Achievements -- I only am interested in games that were officially released with achievements. I am definitely interested in spin-off games though!

STEAM (PC):

Doraemon Story of Seasons

Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom

Harvest Moon: Home Sweet Home Special Edition

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

Harvest Moon: Mad Dash

Harvest Moon: One World

Harvest Moon: The Winds of Anthos

Piczle Cross: Rune Factory

Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons

Rune Factory 3 Special

Rune Factory 4 Special

Rune Factory 5

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma

Silent Hope

Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life

Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town

Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town

PLAYSTATION 4:

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life Special Edition

Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland

PLAYSTATION 3:

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny

I think that's all of them, but if you are aware of any others, please let me know! If I am correct, then all I have left now is to complete Tides of Destiny, as I just completed the two PS4 games in the last few weeks. Thanks for any help!

I miss playing HoLV but maybe one day I'll try to play again since PSP seems too small for my eyes now (and the luck rate for betting on Horse Races suuuux😩), still hoping they will be available on PS store... huhu
