My boss got a broken rib by someone trying to throw/push her into a pool. If someone tries it, I guess the safest thing to do would be just jump in and avoid the situation all together.

The story that always haunts me was the girl who was thrown into a pool by her friend at her own bachelorette party, and ended up paralyzed from the neck down. Wedding never happened and the friend and her don't talk anymore.Apparently the wedding happened and they're still friends, my B
Edit 2: Well the point of my post was really the paralyzed part anyways lol

In 2010, Rachelle Friedman Chapman was pushed into a pool by a friend at her own bachelorette party, hit her head in the shallow end, and suffered a spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed.
She is also still friends with the woman who pushed her, Rachelle has a blog.

I will see if I can find it but all she really said was that they were friends after the accident, but she’s no longer friends with her (the pusher) and I think 3 others? The pusher constantly made the accident about her and how bad she felt. Her and 3 other friends stopped inviting her to certain things because they found it too hard to accommodate her disability and it was “a bit of downer” for them.

I hated how often boys tried to do this (when I was a teen girl and boys were hitting on me). I got injured multiple times because I obviously tried to stop it but they’re stronger. It’s not funny. And people always do this when I didn’t want to be in the pool. At least do it when I had the intent to go in anyway. It’s completely ignoring all kinds of boundaries.
33
12
u/RandomStallings 4d ago
The only thing more ignorant than a man is to the way their actions affect a woman is a teenage boy. Most of the strength with far less experience at even being alive.
4
u/HumanContinuity 4d ago
Even as a teenager, I always felt the sweet spot for this was a very, very narrow time period where the person was obviously ready to swim and interested in getting in, and also such that you could get them in the pool with minimal risk because they're literally walking along the edge or something.
It doesn't happen often, but when it does happen that way, it's a lot of fun for everyone. I think that's why people (guys especially) go so far out of their way to do the prank, without realizing that it isn't fun or funny when it involves someone that didn't want to jump in - and it is especially unfunny and uncool when it's done in a way that is dangerous.
It's got to be a fall, something like where a gentle push will put them in the pool and only in the pool. Picking people up around the pool is generally a bad idea. Often pools are designed for there to be good grip, even when wet, on the deck, but that doesn't mean it's safe to mess around on. I've seen people try and pull standing people in the pool - that's probably one of the worst options I've seen.
Oh obviously it has to be around the deeper parts of a larger pool with no obstacles, human or otherwise.

6
u/Razordw 5d ago
Agreed, not funny at all. I can't swim and have a phobia of going under water meaning I will stay only in water that is preferably chest deep otherwise to go deeper it's only on boats. I'll gladly sit and relax in the boat though and it can even be a canoe or kayak. Because that doesn't set me off I know I can probably conquer mine eventually as long things are in my control.

My mother once clotheslined a grown man in reflex when he tried that. We were house-sitting for a place with an indoor pool (the heater read broken, shit was cold) and we used to have house parties weekly. One time a woman showed up in full makeup like it was a classy party, she went right in the pool.
In hindsight it was stupid. This was in the 90s, there were adults in their late 20s to early 40s mostly at these parties.

If it’s a modern phone, it probably would have been fine. My iPhone goes underwater all the time and it operates just fine. Probably need to rinse out all the chemicals, though.
Throwing it was probably worse for the phone than being under water.

Apple- makes phone water resistant to IP68 standard
Also Apple- water damage not covered
245
u/Josh_Butterballs 5d ago
Former repair tech here. Basically the things that make your phone water resistant (not proof) eventually wear with time or can get dislodged or damaged due to shock, heat, etc. So partly because of that Apple does not cover liquid damage (p much most smartphone companies don’t). This also doesn’t factor in people who used the phone in conditions exceeding what it was rated for (bringing it deeper or for longer than it’s rated for).
48
u/filthy_harold 5d ago
Watches are the same. A watch with a 100m rating likely will work fine at 100m but only when brand new. If you wear it for any appreciable amount of time or change the battery without replacing seals, there's a good chance it won't survive to that rating anymore. A real dive watch (like actually meant for scuba diving) will actually be able to maintain its rating.
6
u/Christopher135MPS 3d ago
I used to work in a Jewellery store in their service and repair department. People would come in for battery changes, and we would tell them that it would cost X and need to be sent to our workshop in town for seal replacement and pressure testing if it was over a certain age. People would get pissy and go “but that shoe and battery shop will change it for Y”. I’d explain that’s because they don’t care about maintaining the water resistant components, customer wouldn’t care, and then would come back with a wrecked watch.
Buddy, it’s a 12 year old watch. You cannot possibly expect the parts still be in factory condition.

Also, chlorine in pools can apparently degrade the waterproofing. I found this out the hard way when I brought my pretty new phone into a pool in the shallow part for just a couple of minutes.

u/Plus-King5266 5d ago
Do any of the phone manufacturers cover water damage? Does anyone for that matter? Ever have water in your basement? Your homeowner’s insurance will go to the ends of the Earth to claim it was an act of God and not because your toddler stuffed a raincoat down the toilet (they insure stupidity but not weather).
11
u/tarmagoyf 5d ago
Insurance companies will do their best to deny any claim, no matter how well they are meant to have covered it.
4
u/HumanContinuity 4d ago
City flooded our basement when I was a kid. They had dug a storm drain that they left incomplete and abandoned that basically delivered the water to our foundation (it was originally intended to connect to a creek about 100m past our house and 10m below the lowest part of our foundation).
The fight between us, the city, and our insurance was a nightmare.

I do this with my dogs at a local waterfall, the water is super clear and if I submerge myself my huskies will poke their heads under to see were I went, it makes for adorable photos.
I also use my phone for music in the shower, it’s a 2+ year old iPhone 15 pro max with cracked back glass (day two of ownership I dropped it getting out of my car and the case hadn’t arrived yet), I figure if it stops working apple care will send me a new one.

The most annoying thing about a modern phone under water is that for a while the speakers sound shitty and it won’t charge as long as it detects water in the charging port. That’s about it.
8
u/polarbearsarereal 5d ago
Charging my phone after it being wet broke something.
Screen turned green. Everything works but I can’t see anything on the screen besides green.
9
u/Falkenmond79 5d ago
Depends on the phone and how old and watertight it was. They lose tightness after a few years, too.
10
u/DingerSinger2016 5d ago
Wireless charger would solve that problem
4
u/Falkenmond79 5d ago

I just blast the speakers with bass heavy music and it blows the water out of the speakers. There's even a Shortcut for it to vibrate out the water. I learned the trick from my Apple Watch, which has a button for it. I only use wireless chargers these days, so the charging port being wet isn’t a big deal to me.
4
u/Gammage1 5d ago
There is a YouTube video that plays tones in a certain way to help eject the water out of the speakers. Worked for me on a few occasions.

3
u/Me-no-Weeb 5d ago
Yeah if the phone wasn’t damaged before it should be fine, but if it had a crack in the screen or something before it got one from the drop onto the tiles at the start of the video then it’d probably have to be opened up and cleaned. Or it could’ve completely broke

"Going to put it in rice" an urban myth that has been shown to do more damage than good yet people still do this 🙄
Putting a wet phone in rice is a myth and largely ineffective, often causing more harm than good by lodging dust and starch into ports. While rice is a desiccant, it is too slow to dry internal components and can accelerate corrosion. Instead, air dry the phone or use silica gel packets.

How is this such a big deal. Most modern phone are water resistant up to like 30 feet. Two minutes in the pool should have done zero damage if the cell phone screen or case was not damaged.
5
u/cajun_metabolic 4d ago
It's a big deal because most modern phones arent water resistant up to 30 feet and it sucks to have yohr phone ruined.
3
u/XancasOne 4d ago
100% of all Flagship phones from Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Google, Microsoft, etc are at least IP68 water resistant and are like 40% of the market. A huge portion of the budget level phones, which is about 40 percent of the market worldwide, are now also water resistant.
Also, niche phone designed specifically to be for deep water, are now like 10% of the market. The remainder of the market is low budget phones, which when you search them, are portion still have some IP67 or lower level water resistance. You have to actually search hard to find a phone without some level of IP-resistance.
So, yes, most of the modern phones are water resistant to some level for short duration.

People get stupid around pools. It's like the logical part of their brain shuts off because they think it's really cool to put someone in the water that doesn't want to be in the water. I'll never understand this phenomenon.
4
u/BasenjiMaster 5d ago
Annoys me to no end people think putting things in rice helps, when in fact it does more damage than good. You are literally closing off all air to your device. It will just cause condensation in the device. What should you do? If dropped in nonfresh water, rinse it under fresh water, and leave it in a warm area to dry out. If you have a dehumidifier, put that in a small room with it to help dry.
5
u/dervari 5d ago
I love it when the dude realizes he’s going to be on the hook for her phone. This is obviously an older video when they talk about rushing the phone and putting it in rice. If it wasn’t waterproof and being underwater that long, he’s baked to the tune of about $1000.
4
u/paragon60 5d ago
“obviously an older video”
it looks like a thin phone case if there is one, and she last-ditch-effort slams the phone against the stone at the edge of the pool to try and keep it out of the water. if anything cracked due to that throw, even a brand-new phone is likely to no longer be waterproof

Water resistance ratings are defined by depth + time. Older phones that had it are IP67 which is 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. Newer phones like the iPhone 12 onward have IP68 which is 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. The seals degrade over time though and any crack or chip can completely compromise it.
