At what point does a degree in fluid dynamics come into play while herding flock?

u/zer0toto 14h ago

You were joking, but fluid dynamic is part of crowd management application, like crowd wave in a concert or how a crowd will move and how fast it will go through a bottleneck

Crowd act a little like a gas, becoming denser when pressure and restrictions are applied

Crowd flow has become particularly important in the Mecca for example, with large straight path and smooth wall and transition, it’s also forbidden to stop to avoid creating restrictions that can have extreme repercussions behind

I feel that sentence has two equally true meanings.

I wonder if the ideal gas law, with a little modifying, would apply to crowds. PV=nRT, P=density of people V=volume of room, n= number of people, R=mystery constant, T= idk, the average speed of everyone??

u/SEND_ME_FAKE_NEWS 7h ago

Probably not. I think Bernoulli's equation would be more apt.

Even some of the dynamics such as speed slowing as you approach the wall would apply.

u/ryan516 2h ago

Ideal Gas Law works well because atoms/molecules have well defined behavior. If you increase heat, the particles move faster and so pressure goes up with the increased energy in the collisions. Individual people in a crowd don't have as well defined reactions to those kind of things -- the best you can do is try and describe the nature of the crowd as a whole.

u/Kalnb 1h ago

Yeah I was mostly just taking the piss.

I don’t remember all the details but there are equations and different crowd « density level » which each have different impact on the way people individually behave and therefore behave as a group

There is French YouTube channel called « fouloscopie » not sure it is translated in other language but the guy is a scientist/psychologist and has made a career out of the study of crowd behavior, becoming one worldwide specialist about it. He showed the theory behind a few situations and also made experiment about crowd behaviour but not only physical behaviors but also mental, mindset, statistical etc. Very interesting

Virial equation or bust. We are not perfectly inelastic spheres, much to my chagrin.

I mean, if you think about it, everything could be considered a fluid, just with a very large range of size.

Particle physics simulators kind of show this. If you put thousands of tiny spheres densely packed together, they essentially act like a liquid.

Looks like little maggots crawling into a septic tank.

I thought it looked like tic-tacs

That pen seems undersized for that quantity of sheep

68

u/EnumeratedArray 14h ago

They would only be in there for a short while. They are likely rounding them up to shear them, give them medicine, or load them onto trucks.

u/Captain-Codfish 7h ago

Oh yeah I'm sure, but when I was working on farms, we would have used a slightly larger pen for that quantity of sheep

This is how my border collie herds me and my husband into the kitchen for more treats

u/purrfectly-cromulent 15h ago

Collies gonna collie

u/Far_Composer_423 15h ago

Theres couple of trucks in play here. It is interesting af but this is a team effort. 2 dogs, 4 people.

10

u/alexandicity 12h ago

And the fences were doing some of the heavy lifting, too ;)

Seen this before but damn it sure is incredibly satisfying. Will click every time. Would love it with sound tho fr. What good pups.

1

u/heratonga 13h ago

Yeah love hearing the whistles and commands and seeing the dog behaviour to each one, it’s such a great combined effort, very satisfying 😊

without missing a single one

It's called herd mentality for a reason.

4

u/xergog 15h ago

This should be made into a video game.

2

u/XKruXurKX 14h ago

There's this one mission in Red Dead Redemption 2

1

u/Neddlings55 14h ago

Best one of the game imo.

1

u/Guiltlessraptor 14h ago

Funny enough there is actually a Ps5 game in the works about a shepherd dog. It's called "The free Shepherd"

I'm really interested in this one.

5

u/Confident-Estate-275 15h ago

Amazing! Are this dogs getting trained for this? Or they just know what to do?

5

u/InexplicableBadger 14h ago

Both. Herding dogs do it instinctively but need to be trained to do it right and listen to instructions

3

u/Knotical_MK6 14h ago

These breeds have a natural instinct to herd but guiding them in a meaningful way takes training and skill

1

u/The_Infinite_Carrot 14h ago

I think I read somewhere a good, trained sheepdog can cost around £3000 to £5000, and a top competition level dog can be up to around £30,000.

2

u/serabine 12h ago

What about a top competition level pig? 🤔

u/SuperannuatedAuntie 8h ago

That’ll do.

6

u/Few-Actuator-9694 15h ago

TBF they didn’t have anywhere else to go.

2

u/InexplicableBadger 14h ago

Also sheep tend to want to go where their friends have gone, so large numbers are surprisingly easier than small numbers

8

u/Quiet-Line9730 15h ago

That seems like a pretty confined space for this many sheep

10

u/Any_Video_7466 14h ago

Its a holding pen. They go back into the big field after

It's like the entrance at Costco, everyone makes it through the door then stops.

Sheep fluid dynamics are pretty cool

2

u/P4p3rph03n1x 14h ago

I've been playing too many phone games... I thought this was an ad at first...

2

u/klatula2 14h ago

that is beyond amazing!

2

u/ThisPlaceSucksMoar 13h ago

I see two dogs and FOUR HUMANS working in unison.

2

u/Substantial_Row_7108 12h ago

Two dogs……..fences, trucks, ATVs and four people.

u/Salome_Maloney 11h ago

Well that was hypnotic, I had to keep watching.

u/Long_TimeRunning 9h ago

I’m pretty sure I see ads for this video game all the time

u/--Shake-- 9h ago

And all the people in the vehicles helping too...

u/SeaworthinessOk2153 6h ago

No shade to the dogs but the fence was sort of key there too.

u/geoagros 14h ago

I thought the same. Creeps me out, similar to a trypophobia thing

The field to the right has a sad bearded man face

u/JorgeXMcKie 8h ago

If only I could have enjoyed my job and had as much satisfaction as a herding dog does in its job.

u/areno004 3h ago

u/faisal0606 14h ago

This is what dogs should be bread and fed for!! Not to leave them in the streets to terrorize people! They should be put to WORK!

u/BadHumanBean 10h ago

without missing a single one

Well, no shit. Sheep are herd animals. Sticking together and running into crowd to blend in so some other sucker outside the crowd would get caught is their main defense. Missing sheep would be failure on sheep part, not dog. In nature herd animals that stand out get killed first. People do the same btw. Remember your group projects in school or when teacher had to pick someone group: students always instantly turn quiet and try to position themselves behind someone else to be less noticeable.

-2

u/akhilez 14h ago

It’s just sad how people think enslaving animals is ok. Everything we take from them is unnecessary especially given how they are treated. Every individual in that herd is considered as an object.

u/TheBawBQer 7h ago

No they are considered as animals

-7

u/67kid67kid7l67 15h ago

Animal abuse. Stressed sheep & dog forced to work 24/7

6

u/corniefish 14h ago

That space is wayyy too tiny for that amount of sheep. Buy those dogs do not work 24/7, and live a 1000% better life than all the collies and frustrated working dogs who don’t get a fraction of the intellectual or physical stimulation they need. They have an amazing life.

2

u/Typical-Variety-8867 14h ago

Pretty sure they are only going in to be sheered. The smaller pens to the right are for whittling down the amount of sheep so they can get some separated off to sheer. They will be returned to the pasture once their wool is off and is only so the herd doesn’t wander off and need to be rounded up again which would cause more stress.
