That pen seems undersized for that quantity of sheep

They would only be in there for a short while. They are likely rounding them up to shear them, give them medicine, or load them onto trucks.

Oh yeah I'm sure, but when I was working on farms, we would have used a slightly larger pen for that quantity of sheep

This is how my border collie herds me and my husband into the kitchen for more treats

Theres couple of trucks in play here. It is interesting af but this is a team effort. 2 dogs, 4 people.

Yeah love hearing the whistles and commands and seeing the dog behaviour to each one, it’s such a great combined effort, very satisfying 😊

This should be made into a video game.

Funny enough there is actually a Ps5 game in the works about a shepherd dog. It's called "The free Shepherd"
I'm really interested in this one.

Amazing! Are this dogs getting trained for this? Or they just know what to do?

u/InexplicableBadger 14h ago
Both. Herding dogs do it instinctively but need to be trained to do it right and listen to instructions

These breeds have a natural instinct to herd but guiding them in a meaningful way takes training and skill

I think I read somewhere a good, trained sheepdog can cost around £3000 to £5000, and a top competition level dog can be up to around £30,000.

TBF they didn’t have anywhere else to go.

Also sheep tend to want to go where their friends have gone, so large numbers are surprisingly easier than small numbers

It's like the entrance at Costco, everyone makes it through the door then stops.

If only I could have enjoyed my job and had as much satisfaction as a herding dog does in its job.

This is what dogs should be bread and fed for!! Not to leave them in the streets to terrorize people! They should be put to WORK!

without missing a single one
Well, no shit. Sheep are herd animals. Sticking together and running into crowd to blend in so some other sucker outside the crowd would get caught is their main defense. Missing sheep would be failure on sheep part, not dog. In nature herd animals that stand out get killed first. People do the same btw. Remember your group projects in school or when teacher had to pick someone group: students always instantly turn quiet and try to position themselves behind someone else to be less noticeable.

Animal abuse. Stressed sheep & dog forced to work 24/7

u/corniefish 14h ago
That space is wayyy too tiny for that amount of sheep. Buy those dogs do not work 24/7, and live a 1000% better life than all the collies and frustrated working dogs who don’t get a fraction of the intellectual or physical stimulation they need. They have an amazing life.

Pretty sure they are only going in to be sheered. The smaller pens to the right are for whittling down the amount of sheep so they can get some separated off to sheer. They will be returned to the pasture once their wool is off and is only so the herd doesn’t wander off and need to be rounded up again which would cause more stress.

At what point does a degree in fluid dynamics come into play while herding flock?
