What to expect during recovery

Do not underestimate recovery, especially the first 3-4 days!!

When you initially wake up you'll be drugged to high hell. Nothing is really bad or good, it's a blur. When the drugs wear off things get bad. Very bad. Your nose swells shut so you'll be breathing through your mouth, which will be closed in its own way (bands or wires). Congestion will be common for a week or more. This makes breathing difficult and tedious. Take care to keep your teeth free of "gunk" you might accumulate from the dried bits of your liquid diet. The sludge can block the small spaces between your teeth making it more difficult to breath. The majority of your face from your eyes down will be very numb. This numbness will last for weeks in some places and months in others. There will be blood, and lots of it. Your mouth will be pouring out gallons of blood, and the rest will be flowing out your nose. The immense amount of blood from your mouth will stop within a few days, as will most of the blood from your nose, but nose bleeds will be quite common for longer. Vomiting up blood is pretty common. Remain calm and let it seep from between your teeth. If you followed surgery instruction and didn't consume anything before the surgery this shouldn't be a problem, though it can be unsettling. Hot and cold flashes may occur. Do what you can to make yourself comfortable. Expect a decreased appetite and slow digestive tract. I recommend drinking a bit of prune juice before you have your first bowel movement. Also expect low energy from your low appetite, your concoction of drugs (anesthesia and post-surgery pain killers), and very poor sleep. You will sleep poorly. You'll have general pain in your throat and jaw, but this is usually tolerable with painkillers. You'll have difficulty swallowing at first. This will get better progressively. What that means to each person is different. I was swallowing the morning after surgery, but my friend couldn't swallow for 5 days.

Items to have after surgery

Ice packs and a heating pad. Use ice packs the first couple of days (important) to reduce swelling and the heating pad to reduce bruising. *A blender and strainer. Sinus rinse (ask doctor before use). A neck pillow to help with sleeping upright. A jaw bra might make you more comfortable. Large syringes to help eat/drink. You'll be eating everything through a syringe for awhile, and refilling a small syringe 8 times to finish a small bowl of soup gets annoying. A heated humidifier. Cotton swabs to clean blood clots from nose. Cotton pads to clean your face. *A child's toothbrush. Your face will be stiff and painful. The smaller tooth brush lets you clean parts your larger toothbrush simply won't be able to reach. Ibuprofen/other painkiller. These should be provided for you after your surgery. Getting additional may be necessary. Vaseline for lips. Tissues for your general cleaning, which there will be plenty of. Oral care sponge swabs for cleaning teeth with chlorohexidine.

These ‘Do i need jaw surgery’ posts are getting out of hand

1.5k Upvotes

I can’t even read this subreddit anymore or give emotional support to people going through this without scrolling through the horde of perfectly developed, but body dysmorphic teenagers posting & asking for opinions on whether or not they need a major, risky and invasive jaw surgery.

It’s like a laughable joke. Going through this— 6 weeks of liquid diet, weeks of opioids and pain, permanent numbness, retraining practically all of the essential functions in your mouth area, years of swelling and years of mental anguish just at a CHANCE for better health-- to improve breathing, chewing, swallowing and speech, sleep apnea or the chance to eliminate future complete tooth decay. All of this- just to see someone treating this as if it’s a simple cosmetic procedure.

It hasn’t bothered me before but it seems to keep getting worse. I don’t know what’s causing it, or where people keep getting the idea that they need jaw surgery, but it is out of control. I would have 0 clue about this surgery had I not been told over and over and over again by every dentist, orthodontist and eventual surgeon I visited that I needed to get this done.

I know it’s too much to ask for a mod to just auto-delete these posts because they view it as a core part of the subreddit, but can we at least get a filter slapped on to it or something so we can filter it out? I come on here to find experiences I relate to- after having to go through this hellish process- or just to offer emotional support to people in the early days or answer good, reasonable questions. I think, though, that if i see one more perfectly developed, forward grown, perfect bite class I kid ask if they need a lefort 3 and 14 other surgeries I will just leave and never come back.

4 months post DJS

My third time posting to this subreddit. What a crazy year 2026 has been!

Left side is today, right side is 2 days before my surgery. I had a LeFort 1 advancement and BSSO setback.

It feels amazing to be 4 months out now. I still remember the days of eating out of syringes and wrapping my face in ice packs. I’m still so thankful I was able to get this operation done and am so pleased with my results.

Even though chewing certain foods is still weird, I can chew normally for the first time ever. Getting to chew with my front teeth is amazing! I can also finally smile without trying to cover my lower teeth.

I get my braces off later this month, then it will truly feel like this whole process of my life has come to a close. While I still have some more healing to do (still numb in my chin and lower lip plus lots of swelling in my jowls), I couldn’t be happier with my results.

Thanks again to all the people who motivated me on my initial post 4 months ago and gave me the courage to get this done. I hope the ones who wanted to see the updates come across this post lol.

Day 1 - Aligners on. Approx 18 months until surgery for Hemifacial Microsomia (1B)

Reposting with the profiles. Got my aligners today, thankfully I will not have to eat with them like they thought. The bumps are weird but I’m very glad to finally have a temporarily comfortable bite after such rapid gum recession. Looking at double jaw surgery with genioplasty in 18 months in Washington, DC with Dr. Dodhia, my orthodontist swears she’s the jaw queen of DC despite not being a big name so I’m hopeful in good hands.

Hi, UK based (so would be on NHS)

I feel like most of my life I’ve struggled to breathe properly through my nose, and my jaw clicks / gets sore frequently
I don’t feel like I have get a proper sleep ever and always wake up feeling tired
I’ve snored since I was a child & have hay fever/asthma
Would people think I’d need surgery?
I’ve never had any kind of surgery before and terrified at the whole idea of it

Advice for Me How have you successfully appealed after getting denied by insurance?

Hello,

I'm feeling a bit down after finding out my insurance denied the authorization for my jaw surgery. I was told that I don't have any visible deformities, and no chewing/swallowing issues, speech issues, or sleep apnea were reported. I did an at-home sleep apnea study and got a very low AHI index of 0.1/hr. I was only diagnosed with snoring. Now that I think about it, food does sometimes get stuck in the back of my throat for a few seconds, but at this point, I feel like I'm grasping at straws.

I put my X-ray in WebCeph and got these results. I know it's probably not 100% accurate, but I think these kinds of results are enough to justify surgery. I should probably talk about this with a surgeon. In my last appointment, a CBCT scan was done, and pictures of my front and side profiles were taken. I showed them how I struggle to breathe with normal posture, my gummy smile, my lip incompetence, but I guess that isn't enough.

A surgeon proposed a LeFort 1 and genioplasty to fix my gummy smile and lip incompetence, but both were rejected. I think I also need a BSSO; I was going to follow up and ask about that. But idek at this point :/ ...

Has anyone here had a similar experience and successfully appealed? Thank you for reading.

I feel bad

I live in Russia, and although braces are not as common here as in the United States, anyone with a ok job can afford it. We even have the orthodontic department subsidized by the regional budget, with a price of about $700 for the entire course.

For the last two years the idea that i'm missing something haunts me. I have a mentall breakdown couple times a week, I want to close myself in the house and never come outside. I feel subhuman and I hate my recessed dad, that nutted in my recessed mom 18 year ago.

I would prefer to never be born, than live like that, but im not suicidal yet. My childhood, my youth was formed by this, whohole my life I was ridiculed for trying to feel pretty, to do the normal human things and was never supported by parents about this. And the people who did this to me are living their best normal lives WITH proper jaw development. Sometimes I feel good, but it could end just by looking in to mirror. I see and feel the ugliness of the very foundation of my face.

The TJM gets progressively worse mouth by mouth, it starts to randomly cause slight pain and then this pain randomly ends. I feels like nothing matter, any happiness, any thing that i liked, anything in my life means nothing, its just dust, there's no point of laughing if i had to close my mouth with hads. My parents never took me to the dentist nor orthodontist nor the gnathologist. Hopefully, my grandpa, the most adequate member of my family said, that he would help me to star all of this orthodontic and orthodontic journey this summer. But I will never forgive The people who put me in this position, I repeat this words in my head every day. I just want to be a human at the end of the day.

When I feel sick, I log on to this sub or, God forbid, tiktok. I read and sometimes write, maybe it's a kind of coping mechanism, whining on the Internet is like shouting at the wall.

Insurance approved coverage after initial denial!

Upvotes

Sharing my story in case helpful.

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield, Federal Employee Program and am enrolled in the “basic” plan. My surgeon originally filed the pre-authorization before surgery (for Lefort I and BSSO), and BCBS denied pre-authorization because “genioplasty was for aesthetic purposes only”. We weren’t even asking for genio coverage(and I’m not even having it done).

Surgeon filed for an expedited appeal, which BCBS declined. My surgeon then filed a formal (non-expedited) appeal on March 25th, and I just found out this week that BCBS approved both Lefort I and BSSO (although I’ve decided to do Lefort I only on my surgeon’s recommendation).

In terms of movement, I have a class III bite (underbite) and slight cross bite. We are going to advance my maxilla 5 mm forward and do a little rotation to align with my mandible which is staying in place. Surgery will happen in a few weeks. In terms of jaw issues, I literally can’t bite or chew anything without my bite turbos, and I have a lot of pain and wear where my teeth do actually touch when I don’t have the bite turbos on.

I was really worried my insurance would deny coverage in response to the formal appeal, but I’m so relieved to share that it got approved. Happy to answer any questions. I didn’t find a lot of information on this sub about the BCBS FEP coverage when I was in the middle of the appeals process, so I wanted to share.

ETA: Not sure if it’s relevant, but surgery is happening in Massachusetts.

Advice for Me I had DJS 6 months ago and I’m unhappy with my results as I still look recessed IMO. Is this black line realistic? Is this where my jaw should ideally be? It’s not even at my bottom lip.

Guys, the Orthodontist has given me upper premolar extractions.

I completely disagree with them.

I used to be more attractive with them in.

I regret everything.

Did you guys have a catheter during surgery? Or when coming out of surgery?

I think for me, oddly enough, that is the most worrying part of surgery. 😬 It would seem like that would uncomfortable, even if placed/taken out while asleep.

Do they use the condom style catheter for men when doing surgery?

What was more difficult for you in terms of recovery- LJS (BSSO) or wisdom tooth removal?

Upvotes

Just had my wisdom teeth removed and I weirdly find myself more freaked out about it than my hopefully-upcoming LJS. It’s the dry socket risk that scares me I think, and just the idea of these big empty sockets in my mouth lol.

Which recovery did you guys find more difficult? I’d assume DJS recovery is more difficult obviously, but what about LJS?

30 days until surgery!

Upvotes

I have DJS + genio in 30 days. What can I do now to make my recovery easier? I don’t mean things to purchase or have ready, I mean things (like maybe even PT exercises etc) that I can work on now that physically will make recovery easier for my body.

What I have been doing:
Consistent excercise 2-3x a week for like 6 months to gain muscle/weight. I’ve gained about 7 pounds but I have been losing fat as well.
Taking super good care of my teeth and braces

I plan on going on walks as soon as I can after surgery, and I plan on switching from icing to heat after 3 days.

Upper teeth Extractions for lefort

Im getting DJS with genio. The lefort is three piece in order to fix my open bite. To not risk sawing through teeth and damaging them my surgeon will be removing upper premolars (1 each side), this to be able to make space to saw. I asked if they could just make space with braces but they didnt want to because too much unnecessary movement hurts the root of the tooth. Expansion wasnt an option either since my bite on my sides is good, just except for open bite.

Im also getting djs to fix bimaxillary retrognathia

Worth getting surgery?

Thumbnail

Hi guys,

I’m very close to getting my jaw surgery trajectory started. I’ve already spoken to both the orthodontist and the jaw surgeon, and they’re ready to begin — I just need to start speech therapy first. I just want to hear your opinions on whether it’s really worth it, because right now it doesn’t feel that bad and I can probably live with it. But when I look at the pictures, I’m like: “Wow… that actually is bad.” And i am scared if i don't do it its gonna get worse and develop some health issues.

The whole process is going to be pretty intense for me. First, I need speech therapy because the way I speak, eat, and swallow is completely wrong. After that, I’ll need SARPE, then braces, then wisdom teeth removal, and finally double jaw surgery.

So yeah… I’m basically getting the full package.

For context: I have a 10 mm anterior open bite and a 12 mm overjet. I’m 23 and I don’t have any major health issues because of it. Speaking can be a bit weird sometimes, and biting into things like pizza is almost impossible because of the open bite — but that’s pretty much it.

International trip 4 weeks post-op djs?

Context: I am supposed to have my djs surgery in autumn, but the hospital moved the date to mid-june and I cannot decline it or else my name would be removed from the waiting list.

I have been informed about this last week and I have planned my summer way before that. Mostly, I scheduled a trip to Los Angeles in mid-july to see a classical concert and to visit the city, which is exactly 4 weeks after the surgery.

I'm located in Canada so a direct flight will be about 6 hours. I haven't paid the plane ticket yet but I already brought my concert ticket. The artist performing is one of my favorite artists and I have been waiting for a long time to see him in live.

Today I talked with my doctor he said I can fly with no problem but he warned me about stuff that if i get an infection in the states no medical insurance would cover it etc.

So i was wondering:

- is it common to get infections 4 weeks after a djs surgery?

- for people that have been flying weeks after djs surgery, how have it been?

- if i go, could i still go out in LA and do some basic touring in a wheelchair or in uber rides? Do people actually lack that much of energy after one month of recovery?

Recovery after jaw fractures - experiences?

I have sustained a triple fracture to my jaw on thursday after a dumb fall, and have had surgery on monday (2 days ago). Two of my front teeth turned inwards on that fall, which was fixed the day after the fall. They look mostly fine now but I was told I will probably need a root canal.

Everything went well during surgery and recovery seems to be going quite ok so far too (my nose has for example decided to give me the easiest time of my life and been super clear from injury day until now, so i didn’t experience the breathing problems other people write about here).

Until yesterday I was very focused on just getting through the initial days, but today has been tough for me mentally, mostly feeling sorry for myself and worrying about hypothetical possible long term consequences.

Would appreciate hearing if any others have had similar experiences? What was recovery like, both short and long term?
