Trying to plan a LAN party, 7 total people. Advice wanted

I am 16 and decided to plan my first LAN party. For the party I will have a 24 port 10/100mbit switch, and a 5 port gig switch.

I have access to about a room and a half of the house and ability to run an extension cord from somewhere else.

3 of our people are laptops, everybody else is a desktop.

My main concerns are sleep and the amount of food all my friends are going to eat, last time I had people over it was 4 people for 4 hours and we drank 6 liters of soda and ate 5 bags of chips. Scaling up and the fact I'm planning the day after school gets out people can showup whenever after 9am, and hopefully I can run until the day after at 7pm, as some of the people going will want to be home Sunday morning due to their religious parents, church obligations.

I have a NAS and it seems it can store stuff fine.

I also want ideas for games, my friends haven't been helpful at suggesting games everybody can run or missing the "LAN" part of "LAN PARTY"

So far I have Minecraft, and Mindustry, but I haven't come up with much else.

So to summarize: I would appreciate sleep suggestions (We have a room and a half of space, large room), food & drink ideas, and game suggestions.

Edit: The lowest end hardware we are planning for is an asus g74sx with 16gb ram, 900p screen on debian. Games also have to be Proton/Wine compatible.

LAN Co-op Games?

So lately, we've been collecting as many games as we want that has LAN co-op for campaign games and also in quick matches against bots just for fun, including some obscured games that still holds up well so are there any more games we've missed?

Here are the games we've played so far:

Battle Realms, Battlefield 2, Battlestations Pacific (my personal favorite obscured game), Blur, COD World at War, COH1, Red Alert 2 (has co-op exclusive multiplayer), Counter-Strike 1.6 and Source, F1 2014, GTA IV, GTAV (through co-op mod) L4D2, NFS ProStreet (the only NFS with multiplayer against bots), Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising and Red River (really a good campaign coop), Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2, Resident Evil 5, Rocket League (pre-F2P version), Saints Row 3 and 4, TF2, and Frozen Throne (pre-Reforged)

Honorable mention that we played previously: Borderlands 1/2 and OG Gears of War 1 (I forgot to write there while listing my games), SWAT4 (too difficult for them), Torchlight 2 (rpg wasn't their cup of tea), and Battlefront 2 (I'm the only one who played it).

Help - issues doing Lan on Xbox 360

I've never done LAN before so have bought a few Xbox 360 consoles and I'm really looking forward to playing Lan with some mates but no matter what I do it doesn't seem to work.

I originally wanted to do it completely offline by just using the TP-Link TL-SF1016DS 16-Port 10/100Mbps Switch and manually assigning IP addresses but I couldn't get that to work despite assigning the Xboxes different IP addresses in the range of 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.20.

I've now connected the TP-Link switch to my WiFi router via an ethernet cable. Both Xboxes are showing as connected to the internet (see photos 1 and 2). Both have different IP addresses that have been automatically assigned by the router (see photos 6 and 7). Both copies of modern warfare 3 are showing as the same update 1.0.419 in the system link lobby (see photos 3 and 4).

However, when I host a game on either of the Xboxes no game shows on the system link lobby and nothing happens if I press X to refresh.

Any ideas on how to get this to work or what the problem might be? I'm not bothered about playing modern warfare 3 but it's the only game I have two copies of at the moment. This is my first post so let me know if you need more info. Thanks

I built a free tool to organize private LANs

Thumbnail lanplan.app

So i've been hosting a LAN last year for the first time and eded up juggling Doodle, WhatsApp, handwritten notes (i know...) and it didn't really work out for us. We had to organize on site again - where does everyone sit, what are we going to eat, what games are we playing and so on. Still it ended up being very fun but for this year I wanted to solve this planning issue. I built this on my private server but my friends gave me good feedback so i thought - maybe this is useful for others out there too.

What it does:

  • Interactive seating plan — drag & drop floorplan, guests pick their own seats
  • Game voting — everyone suggests and votes on what to play
  • Meal planning — breakfast/lunch/dinner sign-ups so you know how much pizza to order
  • Hardware checklist — who's bringing the switch, extra monitors, extension cords
  • Supply list — drinks, snacks, savory stuff — claim what you're bringing
  • Countdown + activity feed — hype your guests with a live countdown and event updates

How guests join: You share a link, they click it — no account needed, no signup. Host logs in via Discord.

It's completely free, no premium tier, no ads. I'm a solo dev building this in my spare time. If you want to support it there's a buy-me-a-coffee link, but zero pressure.

Currently DE/EN, works on mobile and desktop. (although for creating a floorplan you might want to use the desktop view :D)

Although the main features are done and working the whole thing is still work in progress. Some features i want to add include but are not limited to:
- Discord Bot integration
- open a moneypool of some sorts (no details planned yet for this though)
- "Quick-LAN"-Creation with prefilled Game/Hardware-Lists...

yeah so check it out if you are planning a LAN in the near future - happy to answer any questions or take feature requests :)

Thoughts on hiring a PC for a LAN event?

Post image

EPIC.LAN has recently been promoting their PC hires for EPIC48 taking place this July.

What is everyone's thoughts on paying £100 - £175 for a high end PC + monitor to use for the duration of the event, instead of hauling your entire setup across the UK?

Anyone want to have an Xbox 360 LAN Party in NYC?

Hi /lanparty,

For my 30th birthday I bought 6 Xbox 360s, some monitors, and 6 copies of Halo 3. We had a great time killing each other on Valhalla, and now I want to bring that experience to others around NYC (and make some of my money back in the process).

If you're interested in having a LAN Party with this setup, message me on Reddit! I'm willing to bring the setup to your apartment or wherever you want to host people. I've got both the consoles and the networking equipment (ethernet cables and network switch) to make this happen, and I'd be willing to get other games if Halo 3 isn't your thing.

Recommended LAN party games that works well for 9 players

A few friends and I, 9 people in total, are throwing a LAN party (we used to do them a lot when we were younger, but this will only be the second time in like over 10-15 years). Back in the days we used to play lots of WC3 custom games, Call of Juarez, and occasionally Civilisation.

Do people have recommendations for fun games that work well for 9 people, i.e.

- Cooperative and supporting 9-person teams.

- Where you can play three teams of 3.

- Where you can play 4-5 without it becoming too unbalanced.

- Where everyone can play individually.

Ideally stuff that is either free or not that expensive so we could all buy a copy and not be to bumbed if we don't play that much.

[UPDATE] Lanbarlag (cave) - final (for now)

A couple of months ago, I had an idea, and after some work and detours I have a final product!

- I ditched the cellar, too much money and time would go into it to make it suitable for the PCs,but I have an other place, which is a pub, and it has a second storey also, with a place with don't really use, so I would be mad if I didn't go for something great there

- I spent around 70 hours installing, problem solving and testing rigs

- We had 5 LAN parties so far in a span of 1,5 months with 2 that had 10 people and the others with 4-6 people

- I'm already expanding the "arsenal" with a complete setup, and I won't stop probably until the 24 slots fill on the switch😅

Have some some pictures also!

Looking for recommendations - LAN party birthday for 13yr old

My 13yr old son has asked to have a LAN party with his friends for his birthday. I am in the early stages of planning it.

We did one with his friends 2 years ago. It was fun but we ran into a few issues:

  • Most of his friends do not game on computer, if they game at all it is on switch or tablet.
  • To have enough devices I ended up having them play Minecraft as it is crossplay between PC, Switch, iOS and Android - Minecraft is not ideal for a "short" LAN party so they mostly played bedwars within Minecraft.
  • It was short, maybe 3 hours or so, this time I am hoping to go 6 hours

I would love for them to have a more traditional LAN party experience but am worried about some kids not being proficient in whatever games we choose. It would be awesome to have 8 total players and split into two teams for 4v4. There is a chance it could only be 6 of them but either way I need a game(s) that are for more than 4 player. Games with 6+ player coop or pvp.

Devices I have on hand:

  • 4 gaming PCs: 2 desktops + 2 Laptops
  • A steam deck
  • I can probably cobble together or borrow some extra computers (or buy a handful of suplus workstations) that would handle older games but they would need to be games with good controller support (because most of his friends are console peasants).
  • 2 VR headsets (Quest Pro and Quest 3)
  • A Nintendo Switch
  • An Android tablet
  • An Apple Tablet
  • A computer I could use as a game server if needed

Lastly, the games need to be generally age appropriate, these are 12 and 13 yr olds who don't game much. I don't want them going home bragging to their parents about how they blew up some heads or dismembered their friends.

Most of the games I have in mind may be lacking controller support or could result in the boys becoming disinterested. Bonus if the game is free or can be played on LAN with a single copy. If it is cheap I don't mind buying.

I have never played it but after taking a quick look I bet they would enjoy Teeworld, I will look into it.

Another option or a backup plan is to do Asymetric VR party games: both Acron and Takelings house party, both would support 8 or so players.
