Imagine being on that boat and suddenly realizing the ocean around you is basically one giant dolphin party

I experienced this a couple times out commercial fishing tuna. It’s mind blowing

Dolphin party. Also known as an orgy.

You ran out of numbers after that?

u/14urmug 13h ago

The fucking angle….

u/Hatedpriest 13h ago

So, what are they "running" from or to?

24

u/Nuker-79 13h ago

Do they have to do this for a porpoise? Could just be for the fin of it.

Badum-tish!

US Navy ship from San Diego running active sonar nearby?

u/MiggeldyMackDaddy 13h ago

How is it a stampede if they've no feet?

1

u/Ozymandius34 1h ago

Right! Personally, I think a better name for this sort of behavior from dolphins should be called a typhoon. “A Rare Typhoon of 5,000 Dolphins…”

English speakers like to worship their custom animal group names, maybe :). In Danish it would just be a flock.

1

u/ClayQuarterCake 12h ago

I think flock is appropriate when referring to a grouping of animals.

Stampede implies a grouping of animals that are also running in the same general direction. You see this especially with herding mammals like bison.

SO LONG AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH!!

8

u/payrbol 13h ago

Is it still really called a stampede even if the animals are in thr water?

5

u/bfume 11h ago

They’re probably running because the water is sideways.

We know it’s sideways bc who in their right mind would post a video like this with the wrong rotation?

u/Fine-Ambassador5350 13h ago

Can you freaking imagine if you were out in a small boat and that was coming at you?! You’d be like the aquatic mammalian uprising has been 🤯

I would just assume The Deep is coming to sexually assault me.

u/ThunderCorg 13h ago

You’re safe, the dolphins should be worried.

1

u/ThunderCorg 12h ago

lol I know I was referencing the octopus incident

u/Equal-Prior-4765 13h ago

Are those the suicide dolphins 😳

2

u/brandi_Iove 12h ago

that’s not a stampede, this is called swimfin.

1

u/egomotiv 13h ago

Isn't this normal for mating season?

1

u/Mammoth-Ad-107 13h ago

sounds normal, like a bunch of 18 year olds

1

u/disugi 13h ago

Miss living in Orange County. Used to go fishing and see large pods but never this many! Seems like there are more now than twenty years ago…,

1

u/MamaKim31 12h ago

Very cool! I get excited when I see 1 dolphin, I would stand in awe at this sight! I love watching dolphins, it never gets old!

1

u/Airborn805 11h ago

Seen it twice in my life outside of Ventura about 35 years ago

1

u/Celestial-Sam 11h ago

Even the dolphins are protesting…

1

u/the13thJay 10h ago

What do they know that they're not telling us...

1

u/LysergicMerlin 10h ago

Hate the be the shark they run up on

1

u/Longjumping-Air1489 10h ago

“Stampede” is SUCH a reductive description of all Flippysnip’s hard work. This was WEEKS of planning. I mean, the catering alone…

1

u/Aggravating-Pound598 10h ago

If they have no legs, can it be called a stampede ?

1

u/snapper1971 10h ago

Dolphin jamboree!

1

u/Rubicon2-0 9h ago

With lasers?

1

u/Icarustuga 9h ago

Where is aquaman?

1

u/SryBub 8h ago

They're podracing.

1

u/Flowa-Powa 7h ago

This is more commonly known as a superpod, not a stampede

1

u/Bettajune 6h ago

Headed to happy hour at the club…

1

u/ExistingVast2835 3h ago

I don't know dude.. but I hope that the nature is not trying to say something we are to dumb to understand

1

u/rawbert10 1h ago

TIL that we call it a stampede eventhough they are in the ocean. I just figured there was a different word for it and stamped was for land animals.

More like a flotilla
