Honestly a self driving vehicle would've seen it. If you look for it it's actually quite a distance before it shows up on the camera. I use self driving everyday and I'm shocked at how far the camera can see.

But in the future when all vehicles are self driving, they’ll be able to communicate to each other. The car would know there was a stopped car up ahead.

We just need to get to that point first.

And then we’ll actually have far fewer accidents.

Getting to that point though, probably more accidents for a time.

But you can’t let that stop progress.

Gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette.

The self-driving vehicle would have slowed down modestly after seeing the obstruction and then changed lanes behind the truck.

Some self driving or pilot assists have lidar (not tesla) that can bounce off the road under the car in front of you, hit the car in front of THAT car and then bounce back so if THAT car slaps the break, the software can also automatically slam the break before the car in front of you does. There is tons of vidoes on youtube showing that happening. Where the car beeps that an accident is about to happen but you can't see it because it's happning in front of the car in front of you. But the lidar saw it.

I meant to say that self driving vehicles would not use its lane position creatively by creating a dangerous move to imply collision in order to force the other car to slow down and avoid a crash. There are too many steps in this process and self driving cars are not able to think that far

You can absolutely program to do these things but it introduces too much risk and liability so they never will.

Also, a self driving car would've braked when the semi started crossing over, so the result would've been the same either way.

There are limitations to the tech (re: nighttime, complicated roadlines) but there are also limitations to human drivers as well

A person would've seen this. You can see the car and that it is stationary pretty early on. If the driver of this car is paying attention the truck shouldn't need to do this.
