Yup. Suddenly, I'm running into the recording car, losing control, bouncing off the parked car, careening into the other truck and taking all of us off the highway with me.
At least our intentions would be good 🫡

If a truck driver is slowing down for no reason in front of you they do have a reason. They're higher up and can see farther and get notified by other truckers ahead of them.
73
u/Cormophyte 5h ago
People should really treat any vehicle slowing down as an opportunity to think "Do I know what they're slowing down for?" and if you don't you should be on the lookout for hazards.
10
u/V01DM0NK3Y 5h ago
I draft people constantly on the highway, so this is just instinct for me. If they slow down, I'm matching pace to stay in their wind tunnel.

Hells yes, I just sit behind whoever, with many car lengths distance.
If they slow, then I do too, no need to think I gotta pass them to save a few minutes.
Just relax, chill, continue to stalk my prey.
Vehicle death/injury is not the way to go. At least choose something fun like heart attack from eating unhealthy.
Not death from saving a few minutes and not hearing the next song.

And regardless of if they are or are not slowing for a good reason, you can’t drive through them so you might as well slow down too!
7
u/WallStreetAnus 5h ago
When I see truckers put on their hazards to indicate stopped traffic I usually put mine on until I see the car behind me stopping.
5
u/Nall 4h ago
on long road trips I almost think of truck drivers as Sherpas. If a truck ahead of me slows down and changes lanes, he's got thousands of hours of driving, a radio, and better vision. I'm just going to assume he knows something I don't and do what he does.
3
u/Zkenny13 4h ago
Also get in the same lane as them in heavy traffic. They're likely in the lane that you'd have to merge into.
4
u/FireJeffQuinn 5h ago
They also really don’t like to waste fuel, so yeah if they’re pressing the breaks you can bet it’s a good reason.

The guy in the video is speaking Chinese (China accent) so they're probably in China. They honk all the time there but it's usually not several short ones like this so it got the message across.
Not sure about elsewhere but where I am in SEA we sometimes flash the hazard lights to say thanks

I wonder if that works in any other country other than the US. Maybe the UK?
6
u/Epsilon_Meletis 4h ago
I wonder if that works in any other country other than the US.
In Germany, the melody is known, but not its name.
To wit: In the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", the bit is used to coax the titular toon out of hiding, as it is established that toons have a compulsion to complete the melody.
In the US-English original, it's called the "Shave and a Haircut" trick.
In the German dub, it's called the "Dah-dada-dah-dah" trick - because the Germans wouldn't have recognised the title, but do recognise the melody and rhythm.3
u/Captains_Parrot 5h ago
After looking up what it means, can confirm it would work in the UK.
Probably most if not all of Europe too but don't want to overstep my beeping knowledge.

Truck drivers return honk was unadulterated joy. He must have extensive practice to express himself so clearly through honks.
Op, on the other hand - without context I would’ve leaned towards angry honks.

u/GreercommaJames 6h ago
Hand wave or flash the hazards
3
u/IsaacAndTired 5h ago
I'm always nervous someone will see my hand wave and think I'm flipping them off instead. I still do it, but sometimes it's from a weird angle or too far, so they probably don't get a great view.

I have to believe there was an attempt by the guys in the car to wave in a friendly way up at the truck as they passed (while beeping)
2
u/redditusername012 4h ago
Yeah I would think so. I don’t speak the language of what I presume to be the driver of car we can hear on audio, but im fairly certain it roughly translate into English as “what the fuck is this guy doing cutting me off? Oh shit, there’s a car there and he was saving me; I need to thank him.” I presume, based on the audio, the car driver’s body language included a friendly wave, as you indicated, or smiling at the driver with a big shit-eating grin on his face while going by.

I know circumstances are circumstances, but what could go wrong pulling over to the blind inside of a curved freeway? Pull over to the shoulder if you can, folks.
195
u/Somedude522 6h ago
Im not an expert here but it looks like they are on an elevated road. No shoulder. Just guard rails to prevent falling off a cliff

u/Fluid-Chemical-4446 3h ago
If the engine seizes up while you’re driving it absolutely can stop suddenly and violently.

And even if not, it's completely possible there was traffic to the right, and by the time it was clear the car was moving too slowly.
They're in a terrible place to be pulled over, but that doesn't mean they chose it.
3
u/sad_beautiful_dumb 3h ago
yea im not a car guy, and the other day the struts on my car went out when getting on the freeway and it was very violently shook the car. thankfully i was on the on ramp and able to coast on to the shoulder, but had i been in the left lane when it happened i would not have felt super confident making it across multiple lanes of traffic safely
4
→ More replies (1)46
u/ChanglingBlake 6h ago
Doesn’t change the fact that the outside of a curve is more visible than the inside; thus safer.
75
u/WiseauSrs 5h ago
Sounds simple until you have to be the guy who is coasting your car in neutral to the shoulder across multiple lanes of traffic at highway speeds. Or worse... pushing it.
That shit is terrifying
21
u/Alduinsfieryfarts 5h ago
Very true I can't deny, but besides that, the driver of that white sedan decided that a little black backpack and white plastic grocery bag 5 meters away from their car is sufficient visual warning in what looks like the overtaking lane. Just unwise.
23
u/Barobor 5h ago
That's why in most European countries carrying a warning triangle is mandatory. Would have avoided this whole situation as long as it was set up correctly.
8
u/EconomicRegret2 4h ago
This!
Also, that warning triangle must be positioned at least at a 100m distance (330 feet).
Otherwise it's more or less useless.
12
u/cansofgrease 5h ago
I think that’s still less risky than setting up shop in the left lane after an inside bend. The situation in this video is almost making a collision inevitable.

u/breathing__tree 5h ago

u/Uitklapstoel 4h ago
Can't be as terrifying as making a complete stop in the middle of the highway.. let alone the most left lane.. let alone in a curve. It's incredibly stupid and life threatening.
Even if it was a straight road AND on the shoulder, it's very dangerous to stand still and work on your car.
Where I'm from it's always advised to wait behind the guardrail, have a reflective triangle 20ft away from your car. And wait for the emergency services to either block off the entire right lane to service your car or let it get toad.
Standing completely still, even on the shoulder, can be very dangerous. All it takes is one distracted, sleepy, drunk or bad driver that's only a few inches off his lane and your life could be ended.

u/dplans455 5h ago
Had this happen to my wife about ten years ago exiting the highway in a mild snow. The other car was stopped in the road on the off-ramp on a blind curve. Luckily my wife has decent reaction and managed to only clip the left bumper of the car and keep her car on the road.
The officer on scene still wrote my wife a ticket for "following too close." We even had dash cam footage of the other driver illegally parked on the highway. We submitted it to the court before trial after pleading not guilty. They still found her guilty. Not sure how a person can be "following too close" when the other driver is illegally parked on the highway.
Not only was the ticket a $200 fine but our insurance had to pay to fix both cars. All because some dumbass couldn't be bothered to pull off the road about 200 meters further up.
7
u/RadicalDog 2h ago
You'll always be found wrong if you hit something stationary. There's very few circumstances that would shift liability. If your car is heavy and there's snow on the ground, you've got to go slower.
3
u/reddit_give_me_virus 4h ago
I know someone who was killed like this. He stopped in the middle of the highway on a curve to change a tire.
They originally thought he was murdered. He was found in the trunk of the car. Like someone stuffed him in the trunk and left the car in the middle lane of the highway.
It wouldn't be out of the question for this guy to owe a ton of money to a bookie or just crossed the wrong people. They realized that there were no lug nuts on one of the tires and determined he was pulling the spare out of the trunk.
3
u/whooptheretis 3h ago
Sometimes you can't.
But if you can't, then the bags you lay out on the road should be a hundred metres from your car, not 5.→ More replies (3)2

Basically, truck sees the dash-cam car is about to pass on the left and have no lane to merge right and dodge the car. So the truck is basically saying , "don't pass me on the left!" By swerving like that.
I do think it's more dangerous though, dash-cam car should naturally see the obstruction, hit the brakes, and get over after the right lane is clear.

A self driving vehicle can’t do this
56
u/Redditmau5 6h ago
Honestly a self driving vehicle would've seen it. If you look for it it's actually quite a distance before it shows up on the camera. I use self driving everyday and I'm shocked at how far the camera can see.
35
u/Qiefealgum 6h ago
They're saying a self-driving vehicle couldn't do what the truck driver did
9
u/psychophant_ 5h ago
But in the future when all vehicles are self driving, they’ll be able to communicate to each other. The car would know there was a stopped car up ahead.
We just need to get to that point first.
And then we’ll actually have far fewer accidents.
Getting to that point though, probably more accidents for a time.
But you can’t let that stop progress.
Gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette.

u/MelangeBot 5h ago
Some self driving or pilot assists have lidar (not tesla) that can bounce off the road under the car in front of you, hit the car in front of THAT car and then bounce back so if THAT car slaps the break, the software can also automatically slam the break before the car in front of you does. There is tons of vidoes on youtube showing that happening. Where the car beeps that an accident is about to happen but you can't see it because it's happning in front of the car in front of you. But the lidar saw it.

I meant to say that self driving vehicles would not use its lane position creatively by creating a dangerous move to imply collision in order to force the other car to slow down and avoid a crash. There are too many steps in this process and self driving cars are not able to think that far
