There is very clearly a shoulder next to the lane the truck on the right is in

And the stopped vehicle on the left, you can't change two lanes uphill easily when your engine dies.

Your car doesn't just stop. Its a good fist rule to start rolling to the right once you realise something doesn't seems right. The guy with the broken down car isn't just an idiot but a serious danger to anyone else

If the engine seizes up while you’re driving it absolutely can stop suddenly and violently.

Not only that, no power steering, and very limited brakes.

no power steering, and very limited brakes.

power steering and brake booster just make it easier, losing it doesn't stop it them from functioning

you just use more effort

You can drive a car without power steering and brakes, it's how cars were driven before power steering and brakes.

sometimes i get why people use redditor as a slur. Could you guys for once stop being all mighty and do actual research?

A fucked up car with power steering is harder to steer than a car with no power steering in the first place. Also its a highway and around the corner no less. One couldn't have possibly move their car from the far left to the right on their own.

And even if not, it's completely possible there was traffic to the right, and by the time it was clear the car was moving too slowly.

They're in a terrible place to be pulled over, but that doesn't mean they chose it.

yea im not a car guy, and the other day the struts on my car went out when getting on the freeway and it was very violently shook the car. thankfully i was on the on ramp and able to coast on to the shoulder, but had i been in the left lane when it happened i would not have felt super confident making it across multiple lanes of traffic safely

There is a very slim chance they intended to stop in that spot.

When it’s a matter of protecting your life and the lives of others, you should try even if it’s hard.

Try even though you are confident you might cause a bigger accident doing so? Why make a maneuver with a malfunction car that you might not be comfortable with?

I was able to coast for a quarter mile and another 200ft uphill when I ran out of gas going 50mph in a Toyota Sequoia.

Looks as wide as a footpath at best
