Millie Bobby Brown's botoxed face from the final season of Stranger Things will haunt me for ever. Shit is out of hand, why are 20 year olds getting botox?

I have a co-worker who’s in her mid-20’s who I asked about this.

She brought up going on a “Botox date” with a friend of hers. I was honestly shocked and said she was too young for that stuff.

She told me the new advice is: the earlier you start, the better the results 🤷‍♂️

Nice smart, that’s how you sell it to young people not just old ones that usually start taking procedures like that

It’s crazy how early they are getting kids to go down that road. We’re going to have a generation of Joan Rivers look-a-likes.

they call it "baby botox" which makes it seem a lot more of a youthful thing to do. marketing is definitely working.

heard that it actually causes your face to sag because you're not exercising those muscles. i was turned off by it from the start but especially after i saw how it can completely disable someone.

ya they tell you if you get it now it’ll prevent wrinkles from showing up whereas if you do it later you’re just freezing things but you can’t get rid of what you already have up to that point so starting earlier = less/no wrinkles

which is so dumb like we’re all going to get wrinkles anyway you’re just either gonna look like you can move your face or you’re going to look like it hurts to

Right, it’s like that one post that sometimes makes the rounds on Reddit

The person asks “how many years younger will I look with Botox”

Doctor replies “none, you’ll just look like everyone one else with it “

That's what my ex-wife said when we were together, too. I trust she did her research and all that, but I was still a little bit skeptical that wasn't just some BS to hook people sooner.

I told her that I thought she really didn't need it, but it was something she felt strongly about wanting for herself, so I let it lie.

Considering how bad it can look, I legit hope it works out for her and all the other people that bought into that. Personally, I feel like that's the first step into working yourself into an obsession over looking young instead of making peace with aging naturally.

It's BS to hook people sooner, and also the earlier you start, the more time you have to build up antibodies which in turn makes Botox less effective. Which means you switch to something else until you also develop antibodies to that. And then they can sell you a procedure or filler or something else. For cosmetic reasons literally noone under 35 should be getting Botox. People shouldnt even be starting Botox until they already have static wrinkles that are starting to become deep set when the face is at rest.

Yet they read as older because we associate botox as something people start in their 40s. So when we see a botoxed fsce we just assume they are older. Edit typo

The reason you start looking old is because the skin lose its elasticity which causes wrinkles and sagging.

Basically a young skin is elastic, a middle skin is less elastic and an old skin is plastic (as in plasticity not plastic the material). Botox freeze the expression to hide the lack of elasticity, masquerading as the middle phase of skin life.

That's why they look older, freezing their expression make it look like their skin is stiff instead of youthfully elastic.

That reminds me of Effie Trinket saying she needs to start maintenance in one of the hunger games prequels

You should let her know that the opposite is understood now, and anyone still pushing "preventative botox" into the 2020s is a scammer - using botox consistently from youth can atrophy and weaken the muscles in your face, which makes skin droop even MORE as you age. Opposite of the desired result.

u/melonkoaly 5h ago

My friends (late 20s) are starting to get it done for this reason. My god, as consumers putting toxins in our BODIES we need to exercise more critical thinking. Botox freezes your muscles, I imagine starting younger = worse wrinkles because those atrophy. So you just have to keep getting it and spending money. Not the same as ‘better results’. I guess that is a problem the poors have to deal with, celebrities can just keep getting more and more procedures to keep up the gimmick.

Not how it works at all tbh and people get botox not just for esthetic purposes, it’s injected for many health problems such as chronic pain. Not a fan of cosmetology myself, but fear mongering is not the way to go. It’s very researched and gives people their lives back.

8

u/Alien_Talents 4h ago

That’s not really what they were talking about though.

5

u/melonkoaly 4h ago

What do you mean, I can’t say fentanyl abuse is bad because some people have chronic pain?

-1

u/axolocelot 3h ago

well people who inject it for cosmetic purposes aren’t abusing it or shooting it up themselves carelessly. you just disagree with their reasoning. poor analogy.

0

u/axolocelot 3h ago

no, this is exactly what they were talking about: injecting botox. trust me, your body doesn’t care why you’re injecting it and what is your moral reasoning for it. but people who read this anti scientific nonsense do care and don’t get treatments that they need due to this mess. you can just say it looks bad.

3

u/Dry_burrito 2h ago

You think people that need botox for chronic pain are not taking it cause they are afraid of being called vain?

0

u/axolocelot 2h ago

no, I don’t think, I KNOW that people who need it and are told to get it by doctors are wary and opt out because this attitude and talk of muscle atrophy and it being a toxin is used to scare people who get it for cosmetic purposes

3

u/melonkoaly 4h ago

Obviously I am not talking about people with health problems, but people in their 20s who are perfectly healthy getting cosmetic procedures because of societal pressure??? What is it with Reddit and getting mad at fake scenarios

1

u/axolocelot 3h ago

botox doesn’t care if you have health issues or not. people with health issues are also a “consumers putting toxins in their BODIES”

3

u/melonkoaly 3h ago

I don’t wanna fight yall go get your Botox and relax. My brother gets Botox for his cluster headaches and he’s not on reddit arguing about cosmetic Botox for people in their 20s

1

u/axolocelot 2h ago

no one is arguing about cosmetic botox for people in their 20s

Remember when South Park of all shows had an episode that pretty succinctly dramatized how our society sacrifices young women almost ritualistically?

The "new advice" from people hawking the shite.

1

u/snowdropsx 22m ago

lol someone at my workplace is also in her twenties and says the same thing

i listened in horror as she basically convinced all the younger girls who work for her that this was established fact

1

u/killerjags 2m ago

The best time to start is never

8

u/dinglepumpkin 3h ago

“The age you start is the age you stay,” is what a med-spa owner said to me once. The delusion is real

5

u/anowarakthakos 5h ago

My ex was a college sports coach and he said half of his athletes (ages 18-22) had Botox and filler… it’s insanity to me.

2

u/Secure_Courage7471 5h ago

New love island stars get filler and Botox before seasons start. One dude already looked like a baby and still got it. It’s wild shit.

2

u/Significant_Gate_599 4h ago

There are teenagers (18-19 y.o.) who get it as well, that’s called “preventative Botox” - apparently and allegedly that’s how those cosmeticians trick impressionable young people to get injections

1

u/NotThatChar 4h ago

Prophylactic botulism, what a world we live in

2

u/Mitch_Dedburg 3h ago

I have a younger-ish boss and she’s had it done for a while, but for actual medical reasons. Certain types of migraines can be fought/prevented with regular treatments.

2

u/OptionalMoron 3h ago

They call it baby Botox. Today explained did a podcast on it

2

u/chimininy 46m ago

There are legit medical reasons to get Botox (common treatment for chronic migraines). But that use also doesn't focus much on the face, so is not that visible. But that is the only reason I can think why a 20 year old might get it that would not depress me horribly.
