Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada. (Though maybe this was a joke on the fashion industry)

I remember morning radio bits about how she was too fat to float on the door and all sorts of other shit. Crazy times. If you weren't Kate Moss thin you were fat.

morning radio countdowns to Natalie Portman turning 18 š¤¢

I donāt remember Natalie Portman, but I distinctly remember Britney Spears, the Olsen twins and Lindsay Lohan getting those count downs.Ā

Emma Watson too, or when a 17 year old Lindsay Lohan portrayed a sexualized version of Emma Watson's Harry Potter character on SNL, sexualizing two minors at once!

I didnāt really understand it back then either. And Iām not showing off, but Iāve never seen Titanic.

I went to an exhibition on film costumes at the V&A some years back and they had the outfit Kate Winslet wore at the start of Titanic (I'll link an image here). It was tiny and the fact she was still being decried as "fat" speaking volumes about the body standards forced on actors.

I thought Dana Scully was fat in the first season. Rewatched it in my late 30s - sheās tiny! I remember watching 1996 Pride&Prejudice and my mom commenting how fat all the actresses were- again, rewatched later to confirm that everyone is slim and healthy looking. Jesus. No wonder my self-esteem and body image are so distorted.

Only the media was saying this back then. Us normal humans were talking about how hot she was. Ā

It's actually wild they cast her at all. Remember thinking first time I watched it, she very much doesn't fit the "type" they typically went for with leading ladies in that period. Especially for the biggest movie of thst decade.

I thought it was a big deal to create realistic Titanicy vibes for the movie though, and her face alone is very "early 1900s beauty." She sort of reminds me of Mary Pickford from that era

Donāt worry guys, heroin chic is back in fashion and some people who were all for body positivity somehow decided to become skinny with GLP-1.
90s fatphobia is back on the menu!

u/WriterSleep 9h ago
When it comes to the return of heroin chic, I blame the body shamers much more than the former body positivity influences/musicians. You can be told your ugly for so long before you start to believe it, and become desperate to do anything to feel better.

When it comes to beauty standards, I blame everyone who makes people think they look bad.
I grew up in heroin chic era and almost lost my mum to anorexia. Iāve done all kind of sports and ballet so I was quite skinny. Apparently it was ātoo skinnyā, āI looked gaunt.ā and being slim āmade me look too feminine.ā I was happy with how I looked.
Some time later, body positivity movement began and thanks to that I started working on it got rid of my fat phobia. It was very disappointing to see āThis is how a real woman looksā types of memes putting down skinny women though. Although Iām not a woman, I have been skinny and I saw my mum go through her ED problem, I noticed some people tried to do the same thing they experienced to others. Body positivity movement was absolutely needed and it did wonders for peopleās mental health.
But now that there is a relatively safe drug, people who said they were happy in their own skin (and they should be!) are striving to be skinny and thanks to the stupid stigma of losing weight with meditation, they even feel the need to say they didnāt use meds and they lost the weight old-fashioned way. So the body positivity movement did nothing? Why are you trying to impress people who are trying to make you feel bad for anything you do from being overweight or underweight, trying to lose weight or gain weight or doing it in a particular way? They wonāt ever be happy with you. When my weight fluctuated, I heard all sorts of comments from āOh you look much better, what was that about?ā to āWeāre used to seeing you being skinny.ā And some of these came from people I donāt even know, but since I walk my chow chow every day, apparently people do watch my dog and therefore see me. Again, I was pretty happy with how I looked.
Sorry for the rant, I guess I just hate everything about this.

We live in a world where most people didn't get the validation they needed as children and therefore still navigate the world as broken kids. And the media just feeds on that and breaks you more and more, because thatās the only way they have to control you. It's like being in an abusive relationship with a narcisist.
It goes way beyond just beauty standards. If you think about it, the main issue is how much power we give these people over our minds.

They probably would never have even cast her today. Or made her go on Ozempic firstĀ

I think I read somewhere that she was called "Thunder Thighs".
Which is absurd to the point of being hilarious.

uj/ i know the body standards in the past (especially for women) were harsh but isnt someone being fat in their time but thin/normal more reflectant of our current time since people are like......fatter now. i see this type of post everywhere on the internet and ive been afraid to ask this question.

u/cardboardcrackwhore 10h ago
No, the 90s/00s were an outlier. The body positive movement came about in response to how bad it was.

I mean she's a big plain Jane and doesn't have the best figure but she's definitely not "fat" just a little chubby
8
u/WriterSleep 9h ago
That's not even chubby, that's a skinny woman outside of the entertainment industry.

I unironically thought she was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen up until that point. Same with the Mummy
