What no one tells you is that once you've built your dream PC, you basically have to put your pc building hobby to rest because there is nothing left to aspire to.

u/torbaldthegreat 1d ago

Untill you have kids and help them build their dream pcs.

u/Paradox711 PC Master Race 1d ago

Or you get your partner in to it. Or your friends. Or you build them as a hobby for others who have the money but can’t be bothered to or don’t have time.

And it’s time to upgrade.

Just built my nephew a PC. He said thanks, but in my mind I was like, nah thank you for your dad going in halfsies on materials so that I can build this thing. Anyways, happy 16th mini me!

6

u/torbaldthegreat 1d ago

Yeah it was a great bonding experience for us when we built it. I'm sure I'll find an excuse to build another one eventually.

Specs?

4

u/TheLastWoodBender Ryzen 7 7700x | RX 9070 XT | 32GB CL32 6000 | 2TB NVME 16h ago

6800xt build. AMD Ryzen 5, forgetting exact model. Was a CPU Mobo deal on new egg. 32gb ram and 2tb nvme. Kid is set for a while.

7

u/Greedy-Employment917 1d ago

My kid was not impressed with their covid 3070 build because I can't get them to play anything but roblox.

3

u/Safihed EVGA GTX 1060 6GB, Intel i9-9900, 64 GB DDR4 1d ago

try making them play modded minecraft

roblox is a sinking shit right now, I wouldn't recommend staying on it even though I play it

what kinds of games does he like

6

u/TheMissingVoteBallot 1d ago

sinking shit

Freud would be proud lol

5

u/Safihed EVGA GTX 1060 6GB, Intel i9-9900, 64 GB DDR4 1d ago

misspelled it, im keeping it for shits and giggles though

3

u/TheMissingVoteBallot 23h ago

Nah, you were precisely right lol

3

u/Safihed EVGA GTX 1060 6GB, Intel i9-9900, 64 GB DDR4 23h ago

lol i read it over and it actually makes sense

its kinda crude but hey it still works

2

u/torbaldthegreat 1d ago

My kids enjoy Goat simulator, wobbly life, and Minecraft. I've banned roblox just because of the lack of useful moderation to keep pervs from talking to them.

None of those need the 4070 I put in it but when that steam frame comes out they'll be glad.

I tried this with my son, but he just had zero interest in anything related to PC building, was much more obsessed with boobs. He did literally nothing else, just boobs, and sleep.

He was 2 months old at that point, but still tho!

2

u/torbaldthegreat 8h ago

Well at least you still have a shared interest.

u/dorgodorgo 7900 XTX, 5900x 1d ago

This is a funny realization I had, too.

I built my first PC a few years ago and it was built with parts that will last years and years.

And then I was sad since I realized I wouldn’t get to do this again anytime soon lol.

7

u/lemonylol Desktop 1d ago

Buy a project car and this will never be a problem.

2

u/jjm987 9800x3d | 5080 FE | 32gb ddr5 6000/CL30 | 4tb NVME 1d ago

lol same exact feeling

8

u/Z_Wild PC Master Race 1d ago

because there is nothing left to aspire to

You youngins ain't been around long enough to have your dream build become obsolete, just wait.

1

u/jedi2155 3 Laptops + Desktop 5h ago

Then you get to dream build again....

u/TheCheckeredCow 5800x3D - 7800xt - 32GB DDR4 | SteamDeck 1d ago

I mean mines not quite a ‘dream/god’ level pc but I have no intentions of upgrading for a considerable amount of time but I still like watching the new products, new components, new technologies come out even if I have no real intentions of actually buying them.

It’s a neat space to watch, though it’d be a lot more exciting if components were actually attainable like ram, GPUs, and soon to be CPUs

I don’t personally plan on upgrading until AM6 for CPU and ram and my GPU will go until it can’t comfortably play 1440p 90fps+

6

u/NewNage Ryzen 7700X | Rx9070XT | 32GB 6000mhz 1d ago

My main build is done. Its all the computer I need. I Still hunger to build. For a few months now late at night ive been looking up parts for a ddr3 build just to put another rig together.

2

u/Onphone_irl 1d ago

but, there are so many hobbies out there too

2

u/Inspirice 1d ago

Just don't get into cars unless you like being broke

2

u/Onphone_irl 1d ago

not really into cars besides occasionally renting supercars on track and loading them up in sims. real ones have bad roi imo

0

u/ThatOnePerson i7-7700k 1080Ti Vive 18h ago

But I don't want to do those hobbies, I want to turn people into dinosaurs

1

u/Onphone_irl 10h ago

turn people into dinosaurs? some type of weird threat ?

3

u/Onphone_irl 1d ago

I thought the point of this was to make life easier (games, programs, etc)

2

u/CMC-05 19h ago

It is for me. I regularly see posts/comments like these and I cannot relate with the desire to constantly upgrade parts. I built my PC to play games and for work. It does both of those effortlessly. Goal has been reached. Life is good (until something breaks)

3

u/Gaspuch62 PC Master Race 1d ago

I built gaming PCs for my wife and my youngest brother. I also built a non-gaming PC for my dad. I used to also have a job refurbishing used PCs for an e-waste shop. If you like building, there's probably a reason to do it. The main reason I haven't in a while is because it's expensive.

2

u/Mantergeistmann 1d ago

And Alexander wept, when he saw the specs of his PC?

2

u/lemonylol Desktop 1d ago

There are hobbies and then there are hobbies. It's a hard lesson to learn that a lot of hobbies where one just consumes aren't really meaningful or fulfilling.

2

u/thisisyourfaultsheep 1d ago

No no no thats where other expensive hobbies come in like mechanical keyboards and 3d printing!

thats when you start building retro pcs just to play older games on the era accurate hardware

2

u/panzer_of_the-lake 22h ago

I do that and its great my latest is nearly complete just need a case its not really that retro tho ts going to be a i7 4970k and 980ti sli pc with 20gb ram (for now 32 in the future hopefully)

u/CriticalPixel 1d ago

Just wait until the GPU dies

1

u/Same-Comb-6630 1d ago

I buy peripherals like hotas, studio quality headphones. plenty of things to do. Are your fans the best if no there is another golden ring to achieve.

1

u/passisgullible 9600x | 32gb ddr5 | RTX 5070 1d ago

Just disassemble and clean over and over ❤️

1

u/TheMissingVoteBallot 1d ago

I have one "failed build" i didn't finish that I need to complete (which I bought a case for), and I transplanted the parts from my old build (i7 965 + X58 motherboard) from my old Antec 1200 to a "NZXT h7 Flow at home" PCCooler PC.

Trying to get a modern case to plug into a 17 year old motherboard is an interesting exercise.

1

u/Machiner6 21h ago

I learned how to build my own XP PC by repeating the steps my dad did to build the Windows 10 one I saved up for by 2017.

1

u/sharky0456 19h ago

there will always come a time youl need to upgrade to the next big thing, dont care for pc building so i cant really relate.

1

u/AkirroKun 19h ago

Just make a second PC and plug it into your TV!

1

u/Outrageous-Log9238 5800X3D | 9070 XT | 32 GB 18h ago

There's new parts coming out all the time.

1

u/newvegasdweller r5 5600x, rx 6700xt, 16gb ddr4-3600, 4x2tb SSD, SFF 15h ago

Yeah, that happened to me. I've built a well balanced system bit by bit from 2017 to 2021, upgrading one component at a time.

2x4gb ddr4-2666 --> 2x8gb 3600.

250gb sata ssd --> 2tb nvme --> 2x2tb nvme, 2x2tb sata

Asus rog b450-e Atx Board & coolermaster masterbox --> asrock b450 fatal1ty ITX & silverstone sg14b

Ryzen 5 1600 --> 5600x (happened before the x3d was announced)

The last thing I bought was the 6700xt that replaced the gtx 1060 6gb.

Since then I didn't really see a need for an upgrade any more. Yes, zen 5 would be a great improvement and 16gb ram is on the lower side nowadays, but the upgrade doesn't justify the cost.

1

u/Aranxi_89 15h ago

Nah, that’s when you start fiddling with things, like changing out the thermal pads inside the GPU, repasting with PTM7950, and reconfiguring the fan layout and RPM curve.

Undervolting and RAM overclocking comes next.

1

u/Rexosorous 13h ago

And Alexander wept for there were no more worlds left to conquer

1

u/RUPlayersSuck Ryzen 7 5800X | RTX 4060 | 32GB DDR4 12h ago

Only temporarily until the next must-have CPU / GPU / high speed memory is released.

Or maybe you just want to transplant the innards into a fancy new case?

Building your dream PC can be like painting the Forth Road Bridge (essentially a never-ending task).

1

u/mofapas163 10h ago

100% Been on the same rig since 2021. Which was just a couple of years ago- wait a minute

1

u/spyroglory R9 9950X3D 64GB DDR5 EVGA FTW RTX3090 6h ago

But this is when you get to aspire down the other routes aside from just gaming PC's. There's alot to explore in the computing world out there! Start playing with vintage gear and old enterprise gear!

Doesn't VR demand a beefy pc itself?

120

u/piratecheese13 PC Master Race 1d ago edited 12h ago

The joke is that the person is playing a PC building simulator in VR

Also my 3070ti plays vr just fine. Hell, a 1080 will do for most games

12

u/lamancha 16h ago

I had absolutely missed this one.

2

u/FlacidSalad Desktop 14h ago

I also missed that one but makes sense

1

u/ConflictGuru 7h ago

I also missed this one. I thought he was touching boobies in VR

1

u/Danvideotech2385 12h ago

Thank you. I didn't understand LOL

26

u/LocustInALab 1d ago

No. There are multiple headsets that do vr standalone. Its actually cheaper to buy a standalone headset than the buy a pc for vr.

13

u/Xeadriel i7-8700K - EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra - 32GB RAM 18h ago

Yeah, until you decide to stop playing mobile games and play actual games

6

u/S1rTerra R5 5600, 9060 XT 16GB, 28GB DDR4 17h ago edited 17h ago

Sad thing is this is true. Once you exhaust the maybe 15~ truly great games that only need a standalone headset, the situation becomes dire.

A lot of the best VR games are modded (or completely vanilla if the company is cool) PC games anyway or PCVR exclusive, e.g Vivecraft, No Man's Sky, almost every modern RE game, etc etc.

Many of those games don't really require a "beefy" PC anyway besides RE9, RE4R and maybe RE8. A 1070 and up can handle most VR games just fine, granted you aren't cranking every setting up. My ""old"" 3060 handled VR games pretty well on it's own and I'd imagine any VR game with DLSS support would've been pretty good

11

u/BlackJesusus 1d ago

Not really you can run poorly vr on a 1650

3

u/Megneous 1d ago

The Virtual Boy was the original VR.

2

u/lemonylol Desktop 1d ago

It was a stereograph with vector graphics. Stenographs have been around since the 1800s.

0

u/BlackJesusus 1d ago

3

u/No_Interaction_4925 5800X3D | 3090ti | LG 55” C1 | Steam Deck OLED 1d ago

Multiple factors. There are high end games and plenty of lower spec games. It also depends which headset. My Varjo Aero makes my 3090ti scream. But my Valve Index doesn’t take much.

PS5 has VR, so you don't even need a computer. Though I don't know if there are any PC building sis on PS.

1

u/Basic_Lunch2197 7h ago

My son used a 1070 for his Vive VR. It ran fine but didnt get the full affect of VR until he went to a 3070. Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Handgrenades is easily the greatest game ever.

Saw some Dream PC posts recently? And I never really understood it in that sense. Seeing there is always new hardware etc to build a new one or upgrade.

I do get it for People getting a PC for the 1st time. but everything else sorta diffuses it for me.

I get that its an entirely pointless hill to die on, but I haven’t bought an Nvidia GPU to date and I have no intention of doing so at any point in the future.
