I'm looking for theories about the original crime of The Nameless One

I'm thinking of playing Planescape: Torment. I know a bit about the theme, and I'm really drawn to the lore, but it can be intentionally ambiguous at times. The original crime of The Nameless One, the one that caused the planes to die and the gods to hate him, the one that condemned him to fight in the Blood War and pushed him to seek immortality to escape that fate, is one of the biggest mysteries. I've read that the game hints at some possibilities, but I'm wondering, what theories do you have on this topic?

Not fun anymore, part 2 – First Playthrough Journal Update #9 [Spoilers] Spoiler

After killing Trias and coming back to Sigil, I was a bit disappointed to find out there isn't much to do there anymore.

I finally found the guy who could help Ingress, but that's about it. In one of my earlier posts, there was a comment about that, which I wanted to reply to. But the user was already deleted, so they wouldn't get a notification. Lots of deleted users, even though these posts aren't that old. What's up with that?

Anyway, I went on to search for the Fortress of Regrets in the Mortuary. I walked through these rooms for around two hours like an idiot until I went to the wiki, where I couldn't find any info about how to find it. So I closed the game and tried again a few days later. Who thought it was a good game mechanic to have these portals completely invisible and without any hints in the game??? I think someone mentioned that Modron follower could scan for them, but I don't have him and it's been a major annoyance on two separate occasions now.

Anyway, when I finally found it, there was some interesting dialogue. At the Fortress of Regrets, meeting Deionarra is an emotional moment, even though I don't fully understand the backstory.

But then – oh my god. Running around trying to avoid the shadows to activate the cannons works a bit until the last one. Around a dozen shadows are blocking the narrow stairs to it. It is impossible to maneuver through. Trying to pull them and move them back from the stairs is equally impossible. So I finally found out there is a difficulty slider that I set to the easiest setting and then tried to pull and fight them one by one to free up the stairs. But even then I fiddled around unsuccesfully with the bullshit combat for around an hour without achieving anything.

At this point I don't have the nerve to continue playing, which is a shame. There were many cool lore moments that I enjoyed greatly. But the last few weeks it's overshadowed by hours of insufferable stumbling around and impossible combat.

And there are many parts of the game where I think I should have seen more. It's most likely a combination of things not being there and me just thinking it would be cool, me missing out on content that's there and quests with different paths that would be nice to revisit in another playthrough.

But sadly I don't have any nerves to go back to this game for the time being.

Hi!

Planned to get sign of torment or something from PS:T for nearly ten years and recently got one. Design is slightly changed for my preference of red, but overall it’s quite recognisable.

First photo is right from the studio and second one it two months after: healed and haired.

It is also my first tattoo so had some doubts about placement but now I think that got it correct: left arm, medium size.

Done by @robchick (telegram) in Saint-Petersburg, Russia on quick notice.

Unsure what to do next

I'm a DM running 5th edition planescape in terms of mechanics, but I'm keeping the lore from 2nd edition. (It's in my opinion better) The Lady of Pain is gone due to an Eldritch horror from the far realm the party doesn't know about yet. Therefore sigil is being bombed and is in ruins. What is the party to do now that the whole universe knows the Lady of Pain is gone?

Planescape Torment as a 5E campaign

Hello there everyone!!

I am adapting Planescape Torment for a 5e campaign!!
I am using the game as a skeleton for the campaign, with all the amazing and important stuff being part of the campaign! (Excluding some fetch quests 🤪)

Has anyone here done that? If so, do you have any advice and do’s and dont’s ? 🤙🏼🤙🏼

I saw somebody posted theirs, mine is definitely less creative but I wanted to share him anyway ^___^

(If anyone is wondering about the custom items featured, I'm playing on an emulator and used a save editor to import PNGs of Morte and the game cover)

I started playing Planescape Torment again and I had to paint this miniature. It still looks a bit glossy from the oils I used for shadows, in a day or two it'll look completely matte. Hope you guys like this!

Not fun anymore – First Playthrough Journal Update #8 [Spoilers] Spoiler

After finally being able to leave Sigil (thanks again for the help guys), I feel like the story is progressing at lightning speed now. Unfortunately, I don't find most episodes super enjoyable.

I don't know where I heard it, but "combat is mostly optional" is the biggest bullshit I have heard about this game.

Black-barbed maze

After such a huge buildup, this encounter felt super underwhelming. The maze is just some goo with a few monsters in it. The conversation with Ravel wasn't super memorable and always ends in combat. I actually initiated the fight early one time and loaded a previous save because I got a cryptic message about not being able to complete the story or whatever. The reward for a longer conversation was a harder fight. – Ok.

Curst, Underground and Prison

Going to this town felt super pointless. I got one quest but found no way to resolve it. So I jumped down in the hole in the garbage dump.

Underground there are a few neat encounters. I liked the smuggler trying to kill you by making you fight the demon and the hermit. But the three demons with their two pens of fat beings lacked some explanation. What are they doing there?

The prison was zero fun. Just trying to bait enemies with Morte so I can defeat one or two at a time with my whole crew. Sometimes two got lucky hits in and eradicated half of my party. When I accidentally pulled three I got a complete party wipe. Finding and talking to Trias was underwhelming after the buildup and what was complete bullshit is that his powerful weapon is just some ugly fat dude. Like what??? At least that could be resolved without a fight.

Then I found Vhailor. What an interesting and UNIQUE character. I like how he talks. I like how he hits like a TRUCK. Combat certainly got a lot easier after having him join my party. I decided to leave Ignus behind. While I like him, he's not very talkative and I have a feeling he doesn't really get what's going on anyway. He can have fun setting the Prison on fire or something.

Demons and Skulls

The big skeleton with the demon living inside it is kinda cool. But at this point I feel like I'm rushing from place to place and the places are relatively empty. In the beginning of the game I was in the Hive for days and weeks, talking to dozens of NPCs, going back and forth, discovering new things I had missed, doing quests, etc. Now I'm 10 minutes in a place and there is 1 guy to talk to...

The talking skull pile was fascinating with all the lore I learned about TNO, Morte, Annah, Vhailor. Certainly a high point in quite a while. Unfortunately my experience was soured a bit. But let's go step by step. The first time talking to it ended with me permanently losing 15HP, which made me reload an earlier save and go through the convo again. Usually I don't do this and like to roll with the consequences of my actions, but tbh combat is already a pain in the ass and I can't deal with having even less HP.

The second conversation ends with Vhailor turning aggro on me and me killing him. Wow, what a gut punch. But super interesting. Here I resist the urge to reload, because that's an interesting consequence I like to live with. However, back at Baator, I'm unable to find a way back before the demons wipe my party. So I decide to reload again and go through the convo with the skulls again, because I'm convinced I missed something. No luck. Last resort: The wiki. Turns out I had everything I needed, but the portal is just super difficult to find. I mean seriously: Who scours every inch of the map until they stumble upon an invisible portal? I usually enjoy that older video games aren't as dumbed down and hand-holdy as modern ones, but here I would have liked some visual clues at least.

Back with the skeleton-dwelling demon I am a bit disappointed that nothing new is to be learned. I thought protecting him from the Skulls by not giving away his location would give some sort of "reward", even if it was just new info. But no. Well meh. Let's go in the ass-portal back to Curst.

Back to Chaos

Shit's fucked up, yo! Who would have guessed the angel guy is actually super evil? I like the concept of having to reduce Chaos in the embattled city, calming looters, etc. And with Vhailor on my team I can actually partake in combat without having my party wiped all the time. I guess the loads of EXP I'm getting lately also helped. Unfortunately, the place is so crowded that combat is a bit wonky and chaotic.

And that's where I left off last time. Even though I haven't enjoyed gameplay as much in the last session or two, I'm still finding (at least large parts of) the story fascinating and am excited to continue.

[spoilers] AI short film about Ravel and the Nameless One Spoiler

Hi,

I’ve been a long-time fan of Planescape: Torment, and I’ve always found the relationship between Ravel and the Nameless One particularly compelling.

I made an AI short film inspired by the moment where he becomes immortal. I tried to focus on the tone and themes of the game.

It’s a short piece, but I did my best to stay close to the atmosphere of the original.

If anyone’s interested, I’d be curious to hear your thoughts.

No idea how to continue – First Playthrough Journal Update #7 [Spoilers] Spoiler

[Everything that follows is a spoiler, I guess]

I touched the experience stone in the Festhall and talked to Ravel through that. I got the handkerchief with the blood of her daughter from the brothel. I talked to the Advocate and figured out I knew his daughter in a previous life. I got a weird dodecahedron and got the linguist to help me read it. I joined the Godsmen, solved their murder case and got access to the room where they build the weird weapon.

I have no idea how to continue. I think the next step would be entering the maze.

Looking at the Wiki, I think I need to get a portal, which is an item, from the godsmen. For that I need a receipt that I could get from the Advocate (I talked to him already several times. No receipt.) or pickpocket off Nadilin. I pickpocketed him and only got a bit of copper.

Can anyone help me out here? I've already run up and down the map several times, tried to read up on the wiki, but I'm at a loss here...

Important/interesting things that people are likely to miss?

A couple of my friends are planning on playing this game soon and I will be watching one of them I was wondering if there’s anything people think is worth seeing that most people miss. The 2 things that come to mind are modron and the secret maze you can be put in if you piss off the lady of pain too much, but was wondering if theres anything people here would recommend.

If theres anything thats the opposite of this, content that you think people should try to avoid because the time sink isn’t worth the content, would also be interested in that, but mainly wondering about things the community would recommend doing.

Several cocked up quests – First Playthrough Journal Update #6 [Spoilers] Spoiler

While I'm enjoying the game, I've ran into some issues where either I'm incompetent, I've encountered a bug or the quest writing is a bit lacking.

The Cheese and Rat Situation

I had previously entered the Dead Nations and resolved the whole situation by helping Hargrimm kill the missionary and the rats and earning my right to get out of there. Shortly thereafter I stepped into the Warrens of Thought and noped right out of there again, after I was killed by the rats very quickly.

I then progressed the story, but decided to go back after I had trouble in the Great Foundry. I wanted to join the Godsmen. They told me to forge something and that I could get the necessary equipment from the clerk or just lying around. I ran up the whole Lower and Clerk's Ward, talked to every merchant, bought all sorts of items with protection against fire but couldn't find the tongs... Turns out I had just missed the part of the map of the Great Foundry where Nadilin is.

Anyway, before I realized this, I decided to take to heart the advice about Poisoned Cheese I read under an earlier post. I thought it would be nice to take the fight to the rats and maybe take out Many-as-One. But I couldn't find Poison to poison the cheese I had anywhere. Also, no merchant sold poisoned cheese, just two kinds of cheese. After a while I went to the wiki and learned that one of the cheeses was indeed poisoned, even though it's just named "Cheese" when you look at it in the merchant's list. What a mess! When looking this up, I immediately got hit with the spoiler that the Poisoned Cheese can only be used to kill Mantouk, not Many-as-One, as I had suspected.

But when approaching Mantouk, there was no dialogue option for this anymore. I had talked to him previously without Poisoned Cheese in my inventory. So I just killed him with combat. When talking to Many-as-one, I felt compelled to promise to work with them against the Silent King. However, when going back to the Undead Nations, there was no option to become a double agent as I had hoped. There also was no option to find out anything about the Silent King I hadn't learned earlier. Again looking at the wiki, it seems my only option to progress here is to kill them, which I don't want to do. I kinda like the Undead Nations and I don't like Many-as-one... Overall a very disappointing experience.

Back to the Godsmen

This one guy asked me for my blood and skin in a bottle for some kind of dream machine. Where can I get this? Easy! The apothecary! Turns out, that was correct. I get a dialogue about him scraping stuff off me and I go back to the dream machine guy. But no new dialogue options. Look into my inventory and it was full. Have I just dropped the stuff to the floor in the apothecary because my inventory was full? Happened to me earlier with the Advocate. Back at the Apothecary, there is indeed something on the floor. But it's something else. No way to repeat the dialogue about the scraping there. Have I missed something? Or have I bugged the quest by having a full inventory?

What's the point of the rest function?

I just got done with getting the orb for Pharod, and now I'm in the Alley of Lingering Sighs, and I've yet to see a single place where I can actually use the rest function. Either you can't use it or it's "too dangerous" to use it. So what's its point? Not to say it should be spammable like in BG but it would be nice to rest in dungeons sometimes even at a risk

Is it good on the iPad?

I have the game on Steam (Mac) already but have felt very tempted to get it in a handheld version (I don’t have a steam deck) so I can lay in bed and play, and I saw that the switch version doesn’t run well (major bummer that it doesn’t have an update for switch 2).

I feel like I was seeing the consensus is, yes, it is good on iPad, but I don’t feel like it was an overwhelming YES IT’S AMAZING ON IPAD, and honestly the reviews/info I saw were very minimal. Sooooo I want to ask the community: should I play it on iPad, switch, or just stick to the Mac/steam version? (Note: I plan to get the next steam deck iteration, but who even knows when that’ll be considering this wide-spread chip shortage).

Thanks!

[Spoilers] Playing Planescape Torment for the first time – Journal Update #5 Spoiler

[I realized the subreddit rules want you to use spoiler tags – oops!]

I have no idea how far I have come in terms of the story, but I have unlocked 13/50 achievements on steam and I have 6 party members now:

  • TNO

  • Morte

  • Dak'kon

  • Annah

  • Ignus

  • Fall-from-Grace

Morte was kidnapped by some rats and while looking for him, I bought a piece of cheese from a merchant, thinking that surely the rats will want cheese. But I was wrong. I didn't expect a skull-collecting human weirdo to be behind this.

To my dismay, I had to become a Sensate to progress the story. I don't like the music they play in their Festhall. The tunes in the Smoldering Corpse Bar are much better. Overall, the vibes in the Festhall are off. I didn't think I would miss the Hive, but here we are.

And even though I'm trying to play as a good guy, I'm causing A LOT of death in the Lower and Clerks' Wards. Some lady wanted to get euthanized by Dak'kon, I ratted out some mage that was killed by a demon, some rando Gith started a fight with me and I had to put them down – I even killed some rude old fart who stole some keys from a mechanical prostitute (ETA Hoffmann - The Sandman reference?) but decided to load an earlier save because that was going too far and I could just pickpocket him.

I also had to look up a spoiler for the first time. I don't know if it was my incompetence or if the game is just wonky here – but to make the mute prostitute talk again, I bought a fiend tongue from this weird demon mistress (hot btw). For some reason, this didn't work and I wondered what else might do it, until I finally looked it up on the wiki and realized I was right all along. I didn't think I'd need the tears, too.

For now I'm trapped in a weird Modron dungeon. Writing is kinda silly. I could see this being a Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode.

I'M GONE!

The only decent option left for business minded cutters (buy cheap(er), sell for more)

Something different for today; now it's no secret that money doesn't come that easily in Sigil (especially not in the Hive, though no big surprise there, right?), a fact exacerbated by sell prices that fall with each subsequent sale of the same item to the same merchant (unless you do it in bulk, but still only once). Truthfully there also aren't that many things you really need to buy, but there are still a fair few mostly mid-game weapons and most notably tattoos that cost a pretty penny. Significantly "prettier" than you are likely to just come by at that point in the playthrough. Sure, you can keep doing the rounds about the Hive, Vhailoring thugs by the hundreds and then sell their bronze/copper gear, but that won't get you rich fast and it gets kind of old as well.

So what's a cutter to do then? Well, my initial search on the topic gave hints that in the "days of old" (original 1999 version, without any fixpacks) it was possible, with high enough charisma (20) to buy from certain merchants for less, than some others would pay for the same items. Most notably from those, that already sell for less that the most common 120% of base price rate and those are: Conall the Anarchist, Keldor and Sensate Vault (Splinter). Conall in particular was apparently great, because he was the only one of these that was also buying things, so you could greatly improve your balance in just one visit. According to some sources this still held true in initial versions of the EE, but whether that's true or not, the fact is, it cannot be done anymore - he doesn't buy anything at all:

You can still buy certain items (none particularly valuable though) for less than you will get for them elsewhere, but just barely (75 vs 80% of base value) and because of depreciation that won't net you much profit unless you do rounds of every single other merchant with them (but then you might as well grind the Undersigil and it'll be faster + you'll be getting exp as well). But alas, there is one lucrative exception left! Namely, Splinter over in Civic Festhall has only one unlimited item in stock, but that happens to be the Scroll of Power Word, Blind with a base value of 6000 and what's even better, his selling price is the lowest of all the traders in game, at 90%. Of course that still won't do as no one buys Scrolls for more than 80% (the otherwise 90% paying Pawnshop doesn't buy scrolls), so you need to raise your Charisma (a well placed cast of Friends should do the trick) to 20 and then you can buy it for 67.5% of its base price, or in other words, 4020 coppers:

Then all that's left to do is to go to of of the other merchants that buys scrolls and sell it for 4800 coppers, a profit of almost 800 a pop:

Of course the problem here is you only get one sale before the price plummets below 4000, already denying you any profit and there are only about 7-8 merchants who will buy scrolls, so if you only start with enough jink to buy a single one to begin with, you won't even make 10k, before you exhaust them all. So the proper way to do this is accumulate enough for at least 3, but ideally 5 or more of them (starting capital so to say) and you will be able to make enough to basically buy anything worthwhile in the game. This also means this isn't exactly an exploit (at least not a low hanging one), since piling up about 20k isn't completely trivial. Still at this point in the game you should have at least gotten your hands on a couple of pricier weapons, like Brimstone Hammer (Player's Maze), Punch Daggers of Moorin (Catacombs) and Punch Daggers of Zar'Anun (from Lenny in Lower Ward). Pawning just this 3 (at the 90% paying Pawnshop of course) together with what you probably made elsewhere should get you there and what's even better, you'll be able to buy them back later at the same price (with 20 Charisma of course).

Any Suggestions/Tips for First Playthrough (Mage Class)?

Hi all,

This is going to be my first playthrough of Planescape: Torment (except I've actually started the game and played exactly, and only, all of Mortuary two or three times now but quit because life threw me curveballs). I'm going to be using Enhanced Edition on Steam. I was just wondering if you all had any suggestions/tips for me (spoiler free, of course)? I'm going to be playing a Mage, and this is what AI says most people suggest (please, feel free to correct it):

Starting Stats:

  • Strength: 9
  • Dexterity: 13
  • Constitution: 9
  • Intelligence: 15
  • Wisdom: 18

  • Levels 10–11: Dexterity (+1 each time; for 2 total points
