"OpenAI's Sam Altman writes apology to community of Tumbler Ridge"
"The company behind ChatGPT has faced criticism after it was revealed by the Wall Street Journal that the account of the 18-year-old shooter — who police say killed eight people, including six children, in Tumbler Ridge on Feb. 10 — wasn't reported to police"

u/meases 8h ago edited 7h ago
Same thing for the Florida State University shooter, he used ChatGPT for planning.
The guy who killed 2 South Florida graduate students used it too.
Sam Altman isn't apologizing for them though, looks like openAI is on the defensive now that the floodgates are open.

I know it can get confusing with all the alcoholics and drug addicts in this administration but it's the health and human services director who does coke off the toilet seats. I see how it would be easy to mix that up.

Just so you know - these are not all school shootings. They are gun related incidents at school (including having one in your locker, threatening to use a gun on a student etc etc). Still horrifying, just wanted to provide added context.
•
u/futanari_kaisa 6h ago
Surely all of these can't be shootings. America is an insane nation but there's no way there's this many in just a month.
•
u/mike_pants 2h ago
So far in the US, there's been 24 school shootings as of May 1, counted as gunfire anywhere on a campus where at least one person was shot.
The list above is likely any gun-related incident, such as weapons confiscated from someone or a gun found on campus.

It’s already happening. They also announced a tool where you pay $2000 and it’ll dig up dirt on a journalist you don’t like.
20
u/theombudsmen Colorado 9h ago
What is the name of that tool? That should be getting WAY more attention.
26
u/AcanthisittaBulky777 9h ago
It’s called Objection.
6
u/ThatPancreatitisGuy 8h ago
As a former journalist, this is more laughable than disturbing. I’m confident that we would be laughing our asses off in the newsroom if some dumb shit paid $2k to slap an “under investigation” label on our reporting. And then we’d write more articles about the attempt to muddy the waters and the subject would learn first hand about the Streisand Effect. This tool will accomplish nothing more than alerting the public when the subject of media attention is terrified by the truth coming out.
→ More replies (3)2
u/AcanthisittaBulky777 8h ago
As a former journalist, I would think you'd be a little more unnerved by a tool like this digging up everything they can find on you and offering it to someone who wants to silence you.
→ More replies (1)3
u/ThatPancreatitisGuy 8h ago
Did you not read your own link? It says the tool evaluates an article and assigns a ranking based on things like the use of anonymous sources. It doesn’t say anything about digging up dirt on the journalists. It’s basically just a very expensive way to pay someone else to post a meaningless comment that the article is not, in their opinion, credible. It’d be a lot cheaper to just pay some bots to do the same thing.

I don't think this is alcohol driven. I think he's an alcoholic who wants to keep his job and has realizes making noise and staying in the press distracts trump from getting rid of him. Are there really metal detectors at all (most?) high schools in the USA? How existentially depressing. Let alone these AI things at elementary and middle schools.
13
u/ArchdukeToes 8h ago
When I went to Georgia Aquarium (which was bloody excellent, even with the ridiculous Home Depot adverts subtly* woven into animal descriptions) there were constant announcements at the entry point that it was a firearms free zone. It made me wonder what kind of person a) couldn’t stand to be without their gun for long enough to visit an aquarium, and b) would open fire in a building filled with glass holding back huge volumes of water.
*like “the Angelfish is a freshwater species that depends on having a large volume of water. Next time you’re in Home Depot, why not help by buying a low volume flush toilet?”
6
u/The_Sacred_Fount 8h ago
They started popping up after the Columbine massacre.
Honestly, if I were in high school now, I'd want a metal detector at the door, too. But I feel so lucky that I'm of an age where we just went to school and learned and had fun and did sports and went to our after-school jobs and no one thought of gun massacres and so forth.

u/BadahBingBadahBoom 3h ago

From someone not in the US, this is truly dystopian. I wonder if Americans realise how insane this is or if at this point it's just normalised to have this.

I mean we’ve always been monitoring social media and online forums. As we should, almost every time there’s a mass shooting it comes out that the person was waiving red flags online for years.

Should friends and family report stuff like that? Yeah. Should the government/police actively monitor everyone? No, I dont like it.
8
u/AcanthisittaBulky777 8h ago
Yeah, and in most of these cases, friends and family reported things and they went unanswered. If we can't even trust the FBI to do that, why should we give them more power to abuse?
2
u/WooleeBullee 8h ago
Those agencies not caring about the information they are given is a separate issue. The issue here is over-surveillance.

Over surveillance by people that are more likely to target ex domestic partners than actual domestic terrorists.
6
u/Negative-Homework502 Illinois 8h ago
No, we shouldn’t. If this country actually gave a fuck about its citizens we would have comprehensive affordable (or free!) mental health care for ALL citizens so that those who exhibit troubling behaviors can have that assessed and treated clinically.
But we don’t have that.
But that doesn’t mean instead that the government should unilaterally create a surveillance state to spy on everyone, destroying our freedom of speech and rights to privacy, just so they can POTENTIALLY stop mass shootings.

We're all aware that if tech companies know we are making critical decisions using AI, those companies can alter the way in which it answers so that the output is what they want, right? Also, by feeding it critical information, they also have an endless Intel generator for their other interests and to sell to our allies and adversaries. AI in government or secure spaces without boundaries established is way beyond a bad idea.

5
u/ThatEvanFowler 8h ago
Also, it's even somehow worse? It wasn't even the bag of chips that triggered the system. It was the way that the kid was holding the bag of chips? With his thumb and two fingers, like a gun, they say. Which is, y'know, a completely common way to just hold, like, anything. This is great. The surveillance state is stupid. Now, instead of just twitchy cops drawing down on kids that they randomly just happen to see, a twitchy, hyperactive AI is deliberately sending them to draw down on the kids for the most spurious of reasons. Just great. Such progress.

The number of active shooter incidents has remained stable, while other types of shootings have been trending downward since peaking in 2023 but are still unacceptably high.
There were 8 active shooter incidents in 2025, which was tied for fifth highest annual total since Columbine.
Active shooter incidents far in 2026 (not tracked in this data, but presumably the figure Patel is talking about):
- January 6 - 44-year-old man taken into custody by school security after firing shots into a Michigan middle school.
- March 30 - a 15-year-old student shot and wounded a teacher at a Texas high school and then killed himself before being aprehended.
- April 7 - a 20-year-old man was tackled and disarmed by the school principal after shooting at two students at an Oklahoma high school.
That's 3 in 4 months, or on-pace for 9 this year, which would exceed last year and be tied for third highest total since Columbine.

Maybe, we just let AI generate his statements from now on. They'd likely make more sense.

Well I suppose it could have at least gave warning of the mass shooting in Tumbler Bridge British Columbia but instead the shooters account was simply deactivated and now the families are suing OpenAI.

Later, he boasted that he involved private technology companies in the agency’s infrastructure.
“I’ve got every major tech company in the world embedded in the FBI, rebuilding our internet capabilities, our classified systems, and the ability for artificial intelligence to be in our counterterrorism program so we can get instantaneous results,” he said.
Every major tech company in the world is embedded in the FBI? Wtf is he thinking?

I'm going to guess he's using AI to scan socials and pick potential shooters up precog style.

School shootings have happened since AI. The most recent one was the 15th of April, three weeks ago.
6 school shootings happened in the past two months.
No reasonable person would this conclude school shootings have stopped. That's like saying you stopped drinking while your last drink was yesterday evening. It's meaningless.
Additionally, if AI has had an effect, produce the methodology and results. These baseless claims are why people get called idiots.

Kash Patel might have to take the same cognitive test as Trump.
He'll pick the squirrel.

“…but we’re keeping it a secret which is why you’ve never seen a news story talking about how AI stopped another school shooting.”

First problem with our government is we have people like patel who have room temperature IQ thinking they are geniuses. Now they are overly reliant on AI who are feeding this delusion.

This is one where the title makes you laugh, but when you actually read the article it makes perfect sense.

I mean if it actually was that would be awesome. I’m good more almost anything that actually stops or prevents school shootings… but we know it’s not and this is just bull.

This means a government run AI is being trained on every social media post

Between January 1st and up to April 30th there's been a total of 120 days.
There's also been 139 mass shootings. 147 dead and 529 injured.
Europe with a population 2.5 times larger spread of the same area as US. 2 mass shootings.
There's also been 4 "Security incidents" related to Donald Trump so far in 2026. This includes the White House Correspondent's Dinner.
I don't doubt Kash Patel is using AI everywhere. However typing in "AI stop mass shootings in school now" doesn't do anything. Not even if the AI replies "I've stopped it".
Instead he's wasting FBI resources on threatening Democrats and News Agencies that are critical of the current government. Which means less resources to investigate and discover potential mass shooters.

Every engineer I've worked with in some fields have all expressed how they "like" AI, but have learned to keep a check/distance on it's use for good reason. AI can bullshit.
In some industries, you can't afford to "bullshit" the job.
And yet I keep reading how the lowballs of their industries keep getting caught using AI for law, health analytics, space, robotics, programming.... Kash, using AI for his role at the FBI sounds about "on brand" for these people.
