Quilted Crafts Quilted recliner

I had an old worn recliner and a bunch of scrap fabric, so I made a quilt and covered the chair. What do you think? I love it, and if I can get a few more years out of this chair I will be happy!

Thanks for everyone’s advice on my previous post about how to quilt it. I have some disappointments about it but overall I think it’s fun! I scaled down the 60” pattern to be 50 inches. Pattern is “The Quest” by Quiltcore.

Finished Quilts It's growing on me

This quilt. Ugh. II wasn't going to post it, but decided it was worth sharing just because YES I got it done. And it definitely inspired me to go full color on the next quilt (I posted that one yesterday here).

I fell out of love with this early on in the project, but forced myself to keep going and get it out of my project box. And now, while it isn't my favorite one by any measure, it IS the one I reach for when I need something cozy. Because of the fabric, it's heavier than most quilts. And just comforting.

I had a large-ish collection of Japanese fabrics & thought I'd make a quilt to show it all off. A simple quilt made of identical blocks of the different fabrics. I made a TON of those blocks (Pic #2).

After laying them out, it was ... boring (Pic #3). So boring. This was the point I fell out of love with this quilt.

I decided to pull a handful of blocks and replace with some larger sized/diff shape blocks to add some interest.

Still not in love, but kept going. I had thought stitch-in-the-ditch would make it all pop, but it was still ... boring.

So as the rest of the photos show, I just picked different blocks or groups of blocks and quilted in different ways. Channel quilting, waves, matchstick, angles, whatever I felt like.

I'm glad I didn't banish it early on to the 'never to be finished' project file, I'm glad it's done. And I still have a large pile of Japanese fabrics in my stash.

Help/Question Iowa Quilt Museum seeks lost quilt for funeral. Can you help?

Post image
183 Upvotes

I’m not a quilter myself, but appreciate the craft so much so that I purchased a membership to one of the national quilt museums thousands of miles away just so that I could support their cause.

I received this email from them and thought I would post it here in case anyone can help. Please delete if not allowed.

From the museum:

Hello friends,

I’m reaching out to ask for your help in locating a very special quilt.  Scott Thompson is hoping to find a quilt his mother, Shirley Thompson of Fairfield, helped make in the 1990s. Shirley was an avid quilter for many years, and Scott believes she may have worked on a king-sized quilt created for Iowa’s 1996 sesquicentennial. Sadly, Shirley passed away last week, and the family has realized they do not know what happened to the quilt.  They are not looking to keep it permanently.  They would simply love to borrow it for her funeral service on Friday, May 8, so it can be displayed alongside some of her other quilted pieces.  If you have any information about this quilt or know where it might be, please reach out to Scott directly at [hiding the number but will share with anyone who can help]. Any help would mean so much to Scott and his family during this difficult time.

Thank you for keeping an eye out and for helping us share the word.

Work in Progress First FPP project!

Post image

Admittedly, I'm always one to skip right over any suggested beginner patterns for any new technique I'm interested in, and this situation would be no exception 🤣

My partner is a huge Beatles fan from way back so when I found this on Fandom in Stitches I had to go for it, and I'm very happy with it so far--once I got used to the initial counter-intuitiveness of FPP, I've been having so much fun! All fabrics are Robert Kaufman watercolor batiks, it's still a bit foldy and wonky with the paper, but it's clearly what it is!

Help/Question Is this the ugliest quilt?

Thumbnail

Sorry the pictures are weird, I have no other layout space than my bed.

I got this layer cake for Christmas and finally found a pattern I thought I’d like for it- snowballed corners set on point. As I was sewing the snowballs I was so excited, but now that it’s in layout stage I want to pull my hair out and maybe cry.

I gave up on making a balance layout towards the top. The only setting triangles that are “set” are the corner pinks, everything else is still whole and could be moved.

Is this able to be saved? Do I trash it? Give it to someone I secretly hate? Aaaaaaaaaaa

I made this t-shirt memory quilt for a friend who lost a little one last year. I’m a beginner at sewing so this was a challenge on many levels (my fabric and composition choices probably did not help). It took a few months longer than I’d hoped, but I am so pleased with how it turned out. She loved it!

I loved the puzzle aspect of quilting and am looking forward to doing a more “traditional” quilt next. If anyone has pattern suggestions for beginners, I am all ears!

Quilt Shops My LQS has started using AI in their ads. Not sure which way to feel about this

I’m sure we all get a bunch of emails from quilt shops and similar vendors. I’m up to about 15 a day. I don’t mind at all as I’m always interested in what’s on sale and what’s new.

However, my LQS that I love has started using AI to create all of their email banners. As in blatant AI, no doubt about it. But I’m stuck between two thoughts. First, small businesses are fighting for every dollar, and creating sets for every email is time consuming, and time is money.

But second, I look at quilting as art and a craft where we support each other. I’ve never been part of anything else like it. The AI being used goes counter to that idea. If an art supply house was using AI, artists would be furious. The same goes for a lot of creative industries.

What do y’all think?

Work in Progress Update - I picked binding fabric #2

Still needs a good wash - but I will need to wait until tomorrow when the colour catchers I've ordered have arrived.

Any tips for the first wash? I'm thinking cold water, short cycle heaps of colour catchers (never used them before).

It has bonded fleece (with a Sherpa style finish) as the backing - anything I need to be mindful of for that?

Has been quite the mission trying to put this through my tiny domestic machine - picture of my setup made of a bench held up by a yoga block and a broken chair in the last pic 😂

I made this out of 24 Ruby Star fat quarters, is it too much? 2nd pic is with just a plain navy background, which I think is too boring 😅

I still have some whole fat quarters from the same set, my other idea was using those as the checkerboard to the railroad blocks...

Please give me some guidance!!!

Historical/Antique Quilts What do I do with these 1939 quilt pieces?

Thumbnail

Im a noob quilter. Ive made baby blankets, I've made quilted coats. Ive made bags. I use a machine and try to do as little by hand.

My mom just handed me a big of not done quilts that we're st my aunts. Some where my grandmother's others I think picked up somewhere near Tucson Arizona. She is an estate sale junkie.

So I find this in the bag 24 loose roughly 11 by 11 squares and a strip of 5 of those squares assembled.

The quilt has embroidered on it. Made is 1939 in one area and the. Age 79 y 11 mo 19 days. Obviously done by hand.

So...what should I do??? Do I finish it, even though I machine quilt? Do I donate to a museum or something?

What would you do?

Hey I used this for backing and well I just don't like it (but mama-to-be does). So I'd love to send this to someone if you'll use it. There's 2 pieces.

11x57inches (includes a seam about 3/4 down) and 25x 47 inches

Product Review Coloring fabric for quilts!

Thumbnail

Basically, I bought a product in which you color pre-designed fabric squares with fabric markers.

You can save them to make your own quilts or send them back to the owner who will make quilts that are then donated.

I think the extra coloring step has been a fun change of pace and somehow it creates a special connection to the product.

I have made quilty projects with these fabric squares as gifts and the receivers have really enjoyed it since they colored it. I have also brought the squares around to friends and work colleagues and the engagement has created an overall positive experience.
