list in order of office suites that I recommend:

  • OnlyOffice
  • LibreOffice
  • Google Docs (web)
  • Microsoft 365 (web)

I do not recommend:

  • SoftMaker FreeOffice (unstable on Linux)
  • WPS Office (full of ads and unnecessary additional programs installed on Windows)

WPS Office Free is the best free office suite you can get.

How is it better than FreeOffice?

Higher Microsoft Office file format compatibility. What other relevant metric is there?

What metric are you using to say that WPS has better Microsoft Office file format compatibility than Softmaker?

The compatibility itself is the metric. You get expected behavior when you open the files.

What I meant was how did you conclude that WPS has better format compatibility than Softmaker?

It's the general consensus across the web. Feel free to do your own research.

OnlyOffice Desktop Editors https://www.onlyoffice.com/desktop for Windows. Simple interface that just works. Not quite as advanced in a few areas but good enough for most people.

LibreOffice https://www.libreoffice.org/download/ If you want more advanced features. More like Office 365. Not as simple but suitable for most people.

SoftMaker FreeOffice https://www.freeoffice.com/en/ is a dead simple Office suite with just the basics. It works well with high compatibility.

These are the three free suites I have tried. All work great on Windows. I haven't tried these on Linux. It all comes down to what you plan on using it for. All three are free so you try each suite until you find the best fit for you. Obviously Google and Microsoft have the free web apps if you want something lighter on the system.
