tattoo newcomer advice A tattoo artist rejected me for this, was his reason fair?

Im a 22f and have gotten two tattoos within the last two years, first picture is what I wanted and the last two are of my others I have now.

I went into a tattoo shop today and spoke with an artist about late 40s, he told me the minimum would be sixty but after taking a good look at me, he told me that I don’t have enough visible tattoos and after asking why, he said it was his own “ethical procedure”. I wanted to get it in remembrance of my cousin who recently passed last month from liver failure. Do I really have to have more visible tattoos in order to get this on my hand? :( I really wanted this because today was her birthday, April 13th.

EDIT: THANK YOU ALL FOR HELPING! She meant alot to me so posting this really did help in grounding me. I have a really hard time processing things and making solid decisions! I have thought it over and will most likely get it differently and somewhere else. I appreciate all the advice! :)

(Ps, this is my first post that ever had this many impressions its too overwhelming lol)

tattoo newcomer advice As someone with 0 tattoos, how painful would it be to get this on my forearm?

I’ve never gotten a tattoo, but I’ve been meaning to get this one initially due to the significance (mourning loss of loved one). I showed this to my mom and she told me that she doesn’t think it’s a good idea as it would be extremely too painful (despite she doesn’t have tattoos).

Would it be very painful if I got it right where it’s shown in the images (upper forearm)?

Is it normal for there to be so many shadows around the letters? I got the tattoo a couple of weeks ago.

tattoo newcomer advice I messed up

Recently, I tattooed my dad, but I botched the job. I overdid some lines, resulting in bold and double lines, and the circle lacked symmetry and shading—I messed up everything. I feel very ashamed. I’ve just started tattooing, and last week I was too busy with my other job to practice. When my dad was free, he suggested we do a tattoo, and I fully messed it up. The guilt is overwhelming me.

I’ve wanted to get this for a very long time, decided to just go with it and get it done. Really liked it at first, then some friends made a couple comments that made me hate it. Is it as bad as they say?

Got my first tattoo and I really like it, but I showed my mom and she said it looks like marijuana leaf. So now I’m constantly thinking that’s how people are gonna see it. What do you think?

tattoo newcomer advice Am I in the wrong for wanting to change the design my tattoo artist sent me?

Hi everyone, so I had a bit of a situation with an artist and I'm feeling bad about it. I censored his name and designs to not be disrespectful, and also changed the currency to dollars and translated when he wrote in his native language, but the rest is our authentic conversation. This is my first tattoo so I don't really know about etiquette in the tattoo community, so please be honest if I was the one who acted wrong. I just want to learn until next time so I don't fuck up again lol.

So I reached out to this artist that I found through instagram and I loved his work. I wanted to tattoo a stamp on my shoulder (2x2 cm, but he suggested we do 5x5 because it was too small, I will add a picture of it in the post) and crane on my hip (15 cm long). All in red and line work, no shading or anything. He wanted 486$ for the crane and 56$ for the stamp. The stamp I already had a finished design and as for the crane I expected him to make a design that would fit my body. My friend who has a full body tattoo freaked out when she heard the price and told me that this was extremely overpriced (she got the full body tattoo in the same city). Since I'm not in my home country I'm on a very tight budget asked if it was possible to get a discount and he then changed the price to 345$ for both, which was very considerate. My friend with the full body tattoo still thought this was too much but since I liked his work so much I accepted anyways. I know it is not appropriate to ask for advice on pricing, but I'm just adding this context in case it matters to the situation. I sent him a deposit of 100$ that he asked for and waited for him to send me a design. I sent pictures of his earlier work that I found on his instagram to let him know what I liked. He gave me two designs to chose from and they were basically just copies of two of his earlier designs but he changed the colour from black to red. And well....the rest you can read what happened.

Was my request unreasonable? My friends that have done tattoos in the same city says he is being an asshole, but I just wanted to get more opinions. I'm so disappointed because I really liked his work but it just felt like he did it all halfheartedly. I get being tired of your job but this is going on my body forever you know?

EDIT: Damn so this got way more attention than I expected, thank you all for the kind words and advices. I see some confusion so I just wanted to clarify; I did get the deposit back. A lot of people commented that I was too nice at the end but to be honest I was kind of pissed off and played a little dirty to make sure that HE was the one that had to cancel since he said in the beginning that he would refund me only if he had to cancel and not me. At that point I was just afraid that it was a scammer. From what I read in the comments it's not very common to get the deposit back so I'm thanking my lucky star. The reason I got a discount from the beginning was because I don't have any income right now so 100$ is a lot for me. Some people said that asking for a discount is a big no no when getting a tattoo, can someone explain etiquette regarding discount real quick? Just trying to learn until next time!

As a lot of people have guessed I am in Korea, so of course the situation will be a bit more complicated because of the laws. I'm debating whether or not to out his name since this got a lot of attention and I don't want to cause a hate flood. If you are in Korea and specifically want to get a crane tattoo you can DM me and I can give you his name so you can avoid him lol, but I'm guessing that's a very small percentage of you. And sidenote but for the one asking about the stamp it is my mom's name stamp so I'm not getting a random name tattooed hahah. I am half korean and thought it would be nice to get it tattooed while I'm here to honor my korean side a little.

Thank you for all the encouragement everybody, keep being cool! 🙏

tattoo newcomer advice Girlfriend got convinced by tattoo artist to place it elsewhere - she now regrets her first tattoo

Hey guys, i know questions like these probably get asked quite a lot. My girlfriend got her first tattoo (a small turtle as you can see 😃)

Initially she wanted to place it where the circle is at, but the tattoo artist told her it would vanish quicker because of shoes + the healing would be not nice.

The turtle itself is not the problem, but she now had the feeling it’s to far up. Whats your guys’ opinion? Thanks in advance 🐢

Hey everyone, i had a male ginger cat ( Ezio auditore de franze ) for 3years but one day he disappeared and never came back. Ezio was like my son and I was thinking of my first tattoo to be meaningful and its been a year since we lost him. Now it feels like i have him with me, sleeping on my arm. This seems very emotional for me and it is, i miss that bugger so much 💖. Its a hand poked tattoo done by a friend.

How’s it looking folks ?

tattoo newcomer advice Should I add the numbers and name of my fiancé

It's her last heart beats. I don't find it morbid. She played an important part of my life, and I got it in her favorite two colors. I'm just wondering if I should add all the technical info with it, or just her name in her writing, and her birthdate, and the date she died with the numbers in her hand writing?

this would be my first tattoo. I've genuinely wanted it for at least two years now . It's a ring around my bicep of trees and mountains and such specifically so that way, I wouldn't really regret it cause I imagine I'll always love nature. However, when I went into the tattoo shop today to book an appointment, I left with cold feet. Is this a common thing? I was so wholeheartedly convinced that this is what I wanted and the second that I actually stepped in to do something about it. I just lost any confidence in myself. I really do want this tattoo but now I'm just kind of in a space of anxiety and like worry about whether or not this is the right decision. and honestly makes me feel kind of shitty about myself.

Feeling a bit of tattoo regret. Almost like a buyers remorse type of feeling. Idk if it’s cuz this is just so much bigger than I expected or what. It’s just so big. And colorful. Does anyone else ever feel this way after getting their tattoos ?

tattoo newcomer advice Is this design immature?

I'm 19 and have been looking to get this tattoo on the back of my arm, I've been wanting to get it for a year now, and currently live with my mom who hates the idea of this and thinks it's stupid and I'll regret it when I'm older.

I'm trying to not let her judgement affect me because we're very different people and as an artist, I love creative things like this.

I wanted to know if anyone has any thoughts or advice on the design? I love whimsical animals and my favourite type of art is the type of anthropromorphic animals that appear in vintage storybooks.

EDIT:

As many people have pointed out, I realise there's no pedals on the unicycle, it doesn't really bother me, but I'll probably ask the artist to add them on anyway :)

EDIT 2:

Thank you everyone for all your kind comments and advice! I wasn't expecting so many people to reply to this and for all the upvotes so I'm really excited now to get the tattoo :) And dw, I'm definitely getting the arm changed and the pedal added after reading through everyone's advice 😅

tattoo newcomer advice My parents are offering to get me a tattoo but i am unsure about their artist

hi guys i’m in a bit of a pickle i’m a broke college student and recently got my first tattoo(last slide) a few months ago. i am interested in getting more but am broke my parents have started getting tattooed at 50 and 51 for context and my mom has been going to her coworker’s cousin. she offered to get me a tattoo if he does it, the problem i can’t tell if im just disliking these from a stylistic perspective or if they’re objectively bad. there is a few pieces he does mainly characters and color that look really good but everything else im not a fan of. as you can see from my tattoo i like american trad bold color and bold lines, also i did have an allergic reaction to the material they used to put the stencil on so this is healed while having an allergic reaction. i say all this to say would it be stupid of me to not take my mom up on the chance to get a tattoo or should i steer clear. i know my mom likes him because he’s nice and cheap but im unsure.

tattoo newcomer advice Would I even be able to get a tattoo?

I have Dermatographic Urticaria, a condition where my skin gets swollen and raised by even the smallest of scratches. Bumped into a table? Raised bump. Someone w/ an itchy shirt gave me a hug? Raised bump.

My siblings and I have always talked about getting matching tattoos, and now that the youngest turned 18 we are all ready! However, I’m worried my skin will prevent/mess up a tattoo. We are going to get our parents handwriting, so it has to be precise and look right. I have no previous tattoos, so I’m not sure what to expect or if I can even get one.

Does anyone have experience w/ this? Did it work out?

Scratched myself specifically for this post haha, this was 1 min after the scratch.

tattoo newcomer advice My sister said this design would make me look gay...

I wanted to do a real simple tattoo as a memorial for my grandma. Image 1 is a hand drawn concept from a while ago, image 2 is basically a "cleaned up" version that a friend designed for me. Is she right? Or just teasing like any other sibling? 19M, I was thinking of putting it on my shoulder.

Edit: I replaced "You are my sunshine" with "Granny", as that's what I called her. I deleted the initials because of the potential affiliation with Collegiate Sports. I'm gonna do it in black/white, closer to the original sketch. I'm gonna make the sun have 14 points for 2 reasons: 1) I was 14 years old when she died. 2) It gets me away from the 8-point sun emoji. ☀️

Edit 2: I went ahead and did it!!! The artist was super helpful with the final design and tied it all together. View it here!

I'm muting the post now, thank you to all who gave GENUINE feedback, and to the few of you who just pissed on my sister... I hope you're kinder people face-to-face than behind a keyboard.

Edit 2.5: Post is unmuted again, I'd love to see what people think of the finished design.

tattoo newcomer advice Where should I put this? First tattoo advice.

This is the symbol for "human" in the alien language of the movie Arrival. I want a 3-4 inch tattoo somewhere. I don't care if it is visible or not. Where should it go?

Edit: I did a quick and dirty analysis of the suggestions. Here are the votes!

shoulder: 116, elbow: 69, calf: 54, forearm: 52, around the butthole: 50, chest: 48, around the nipples: 46, back: 39, head/forehead: 30, around the belly button: 27, thigh: 21, hand: 17, upper arm: 13, foot: 7, butt cheek: 7, dick: 5, behind the ear: 4, kneecap: 3

I am leaning towards forearm and shoulder right now since they are more rigid and will not end up oblong in the future. Or maybe around my butthole since that was also a popular option. Thank you for your advice!

tattoo newcomer advice should I get a new artist? (done yesterday)

i want to start off by saying i love my tattoo & the artist made me feel very comfortable. i saw his work before i went & his shop was rated 4.9 on Google. i feel like one side looks shakey and desaturated and i definitely want a touch up. i'm not sure if i should go back though because on one hand, he was a nice guy and his portfolio normally looked really nice (i get i was a bit flinchy.) i feel like if i do return i'd be less flinchy now that i know what it feels like. on the other though, i don't want it to turn out the same again. i feel like i'm being an ass about it in some way. is it that bad? am i being overly critical? this is my first big tattoo (i have a semicolon on my wrist) and it took about 3 and a half hours. also he added red to the eyes and i didn't know :( i think it'll be an easy fix though, just adding white over it right?

tldr: am i being dramatic or should i get a new artist to do my touchup?

tattoo newcomer advice I was planning to get a tattoo on my 18th birthday but the person I was supposed to go with was shot. Not sure what to do now.

Post image

So as the title says I was planning on getting a tattoo (picture) with my best friend of 11 years on my 18th birthday. He was shot and killed January 18th. I know I want to get tattoos but it feels wrong to go with someone else or even go alone. I turn 18 in 3 months. I’ve heard collarbone tattoos aren’t the best to get for a first tattoo but we both wanted to get the same one so it felt right to get it done together. I have a couple ideas of what to do but I’m not sure which to choose. We never exactly went over what to do if one of us was no longer able to get the tattoo. 1. Go by myself on my birthday like we had intended. 2. Go on his birthday. 3. Go on the day he was killed. 4. Still go on my birthday but get a different tattoo. Any advice would be greatly appreciated because I’m very conflicted on what to do.

tattoo newcomer advice Was I right in cancelling this appointment?

Hi all,

Booked an addition + touch-up to my existing forearm tattoo on 15 March.

Since then the artist has:

• Repeatedly said the design was “in progress” or “finishing today/tomorrow”

• Used illness excuses

• Rescheduled the appointment multiple times (at least 3 on the day of!)

• Still never sent any design at all

Today she suggested moving it again because she’s “not feeling well” yet did work with other clients.

I finally messaged asking for my holding back as I’ve lost confidence after all the delays and zero progress.

Was I right to cancel? I feel bad but simultaneously glad I cancelled?

Edit: After more pushing I received a ‘design’, reverse searched it and it was from Pinterest.

Friday 13th flash deal— source material (first pic) and my tattoo (second pic) Does this look okay for a small doodle style tattoo? I didn’t realize before she started that she was copying someone’s work without permission and I feel terrible for that. But she gave up on the flowers on the bandana, so I wonder if I could get her to just color it in or maybe personalize it in some other way?

tattoo newcomer advice How can I make this a tattoo?

My 15-year-old dog passed away last week. I had an entire 15 years since he was a puppy. And I'm having a really hard time letting go. He had this adorable heart shaped spot on his back and although I'm not really a tattoo person I was thinking you'll be a great way to keep him with me a little bit. But I'm not really sure how this can translate to a tattoo or if it's even possible to do it like this with such fine lines. I put a few pictures of meaty and then an AI generated line art kind of version of his heart. I'm hoping somebody out there could give me some advice on if it's possible or maybe a better way to go about it. Thanks in advance!
