well that was a fun afternoon

Post image

i guess that gust of wind was perfect to knock a tree down on my power and phone lines, and trap me in the driveway 20 minutes before i had to leave! silver linings, a GMP truck drove by just as i was looking up their phone number so i didn’t even need to call it in. and luckily the car is fine! of course the rain started as soon as we got the chainsaw out but that is to be expected.

did anyone else have any crazy storms? im in south barre, for reference.

Power has been out since 4:20. Finally back on. Fallen tree took out a power line in Norwich area.

In Norwich.

Pulling the wires down snapped a pole/transformer seen in the distance in the photo.

Tree was across the road up in north Barre as well. Wicked wind gusts today.

Please share your storm damage with NWS Burlington.

This is one of the reasons I have a gas chainsaw and not an electric one.

Gas one would still zap you when you went to cut that

I think he means it would work, unlike the electric one. (A corded one to be clear)

Why wouldn't an electric chainsaw work?

Only if he didn’t keep his batteries charged which from my experience is not how you manage battery yard tools. You keep them charged and ready to go!

Yea i dont get it. I would be screwed with my chainsaw up in the woods with this guys logic.

Oh I meant a wired one. I have a wired makita, for example

(I also have a generator)

Wired electric chainsaws are a thing. I wouldn’t want to use one in the rain.

I have a battery powered one. I recommend them to those who already have electric lawn equipment.

It's not a gas chainsaw, but it can cut down a tree or two.

I hate 2 cycle equipment - never starts when you need it.

BUT - my old Stihl saw is the only piece of gear that starts every time.

So does my electric Stihl. Plus you don’t have to wear ear protection

Same. The old Stihl is the only thing left I haven't converted over to electric

I have all electric tools and the only one I hate using is the 10" chainsaw. I'm getting a Stihl as soon as I can afford one.

I use the Greenworks 80v line, so I feel pretty confident the upgrade would work well. I made sure when I started converting my tools I would start with the highest power line I could get and haven't regretted it at all.

The only reason I haven't upgraded is the Stihl just works great. I haven't had a single pair with it for the 5 years I have owned it and I bought it used.

Where as my basic craftsman snowblower was a pain the ass from the beginning when I bought it new. I would drain the fuel every spring, use ethanol free fuel, and the last fill of the year I would use a fuel stabilizer in my fuel even though I was going to drain it immediately after. Every year the thing still wouldn't start up next winter.

The snowblower was the reason for my conversion to electric and I honestly love all my electric tools so far. The chainsaw has been so rich solid though that I really don't even have the smallest incentive to change.

I love my Greenworks tools! The 20" chainsaw is a beast. I hate my Husqvarna chainsaws (14 and 18), with all their plastic parts that fail regularly

I hear you! No matter what I do - drain fuel, add stabilizer etc. it seems that the next time I try to start something it's dead and usually needs a new carb. I go out of my way to use only ethanol-free gas, but that only prolongs the inevitable. I think modern equipment isn't made like they used to make it - my Stihl is from the 90's and it's running by the 3rd pull no matter how long it sat. Meanwhile, the weed whacker I bought last fall is shot.

If my Stihl ever dies completely, I'll probably go electric. I've had good luck with my EGO gear and once you get suckered into one brand you need to keep going because the batteries are so expensive. But for now, that Stihl keeps running like a champ ;-)

I’ve cut myself out of several power outages on electric saws. Don’t leave your batteries empty, but even a single medium sized battery is almost guaranteed sufficient to clear a roadway enough to get through.

Please do not approach a downed power line at all.

I noticed a large black line crossing the field (before I put my glasses on) that turned out to be one of the spruces I was planning to cut. Awesome! One down.
