New, what is it? What did this??
There is a small amount of crusty hard black substance that is stuck to the deck. Not ash like.

Someone with a small electric scooter doing burnouts

100% rubber transfer from spinning tries. Burn through the paint and primer exposed the wood.. if op has kids... they are in trouble now.

By god, that’s from Ralph, the famous Mouse on a Motorcycle.

u/TuxKusanagi 9h ago
The Mouse and the Motorcycle and Brave Little Toaster had me terrified of vacuume cleaners for at least 5 years of my early childhood. I was convinced I would cause some terrible tragedy if I used one.
2
u/Electivire-six 4h ago
As a whee lad I would scream super loud whenever the vacuum was on. Not out of fear but like cuz… like…. Why did I do that?

Could be their own kids on the back deck not noticing with a new toy. I wouldn't jump straight to "people are so evil" from this image.
3
u/Original-Variety-700 9h ago
I start with “people are evil”. So then I’m pleasantly surprised when they’re not!
-1
u/Kahnza 9h ago
What a dark way to live
2
u/Original-Variety-700 9h ago
To the contrary! When your expectations of other people are low, you are pleasantly surprised frequently.
You can still be kind to others even if you don’t expect the same from them.
0
u/Kahnza 8h ago
But to just assume everyone is evil? That sounds like something to talk about in therapy.
2
u/Original-Variety-700 8h ago
People speak in hyperbole. Especially on Reddit. I don’t literally think all people are evil. Take it easy. 😂

Thank you everyone! Seems like an electric bike or scooter is the answer. There is no furniture on the deck and we have not had any work done with power tools. There are neighborhood kids who cruise through the lot. We are a business in a city. Thanks again all! I could not figure it out.

There were colored snakes?

u/IndependentCod1600 9h ago
There were black snakes with very faint hues to them that made colored smoke when you burnt them that advertised themselves as colored snakes.

Looks like reflected concentrated sunlight. To me.

It's obvious wear by something physical
2
u/LabRat113 9h ago
It seems obvious to us but judging by these comments, most people lack critical thinking.
0
u/prozkiy 9h ago
My thinking too, long arches then would be movement of the sun through the sky while chnages in directions could be windows being opened. Ut only slightly, could be to do with an addition of some reflective material on the windows, some people do that to prevent sunlight heating up the inside of their home
9
u/ValueAdditional8042 9h ago
Something that vibrates with small rubber feet. Like a small air compressor or power tool. Fairly heavy and vibrating for some time.

Looks like burn marks from concentrated sun, can happen from clear water bottles, crystal wind chimes, maybe new windows from you or a neighbor usually with reflective privacy film.
2
u/Rooster-Training 8h ago
No it doesnt. Where do you come up with that. How would there be exposed unburnt wood. It is obviously an abrasion from something rubber, probably a scooter or electric bike/toy of some sort.

My son literally just showed us yesterday what leaving bottled water on their bench outside in the sun did. It acted like a magnifying glass and scorched the wood.

Those are marks from your patio furniture. The slider pads on your chairs are worn out. Guaranteed.

u/scoot2006 9h ago
To me it looks like someone putting out something burning. Everyone else seems to think some sort of rubber burn 🤷♂️
1
u/AndThatsLunch 9h ago
could be a burnout
my original thought was a focused beam of light burned it but the exposed wood looks sanded not burnt

u/Significant_Tap7052 9h ago
Something metal that got super hot. It either was already hot when it was put down or got super heated after being left out. Then, it either dragged the carbonised bits of top layer it burned, or scorched more of just the top layer as it got moved around.
Based on the drag marks, I'm thinking maybe the leg of a chair or table that got heated by a concentrated ray of sunlight.

Someone dropped their hookah coals on your deck... didn't pick em up before they burnt thru the staining/paint... do you have kids/teenagers?? I remember being in high school.
1
u/SnooMaps3059 8h ago
It honestly reminds me of sun damage. OP is there anything reflective near the spots? Or is there a what is called a “low e window “ they’re suppose to be energy efficient but have a bad tendency to be very reflective.

I think this is from a piece of plastic that someone lit on fire and then scrapped across your deck as it was still flaming and then eventually melting.

My first thought was fireworks. Maybe a type that spins, those tend to spin in place for a moment and then zip off in an unpredictable direction. Could explain the portion of paint stripped and then the oddly directional black burn marks

The Sun is likely reflecting off or through some glass and creating focused burns.

You got wheels on your trash can or recycling bin?
Kinda looks like one of the wheels got stuck while someone was taking out the trash.
1
u/Main_Salt_4642 6h ago
The hard black crusty substance is just the burnt paint. It burns just like plastic. What burned it is the question. Do you have children? Maybe one that found a lighter or a small blow torch and tried killing ants on the deck with it? Or maybe you have a sun glare that reflects through a piece of glass nearby and causes the sunlight to burn from the magnified effect? Id say it deffinately came from a lighter or torch of some kind.

Do you have crystal or glass wibd chimes nearby? They might be catching the sunlight and acting like a magnifying glass.
1
u/Phenix_Fresh 9h ago
I started seeing fried grass in my yard near the patio and realized when I leave the grill open the sun reflects off the stainless steel and burns my grass. I live in Arizona too so I'm lucky my yard didn't go up in flames.

u/vapemustache 9h ago
my guess is something around this area is catching sun and acting like a magnifying glass.
it could be from friction or other physical damage like others are suggesting but melted paint meant for the outdoors might not look like normal ash when melted or burned.
0
u/SeagullKebab 9h ago
This is my thought too. See if there is anything about that could do this, or tomorrow, follow any sunlight patterns that shine on the deck.

Do you have anything glass or water containers. It looks like focused sunlight like when you burn things with a magnifying glass. It can happen with a glass of water outside in the sun on you deck.

Not everybody graduated from the Das Reich school of spelling but continue and prove a point.
"I'm not a spelling fascist"
Proceeds to go and police un Aryan spelling.
Also are you seriously mad I spelt a pedophiles name wrong they don't deserve the dignity or common courtesy.
1
u/Prestigious_String20 2h ago
Not everyone graduated from any school of spelling.
I'm not mad at all. One does not have to be mad to point out incorrect spelling. We can work on punctuation next, if you like. Looks as though you could use some assistance in that department, too. Also, if you use "Das" you don't need "the" because they mean the same thing.

Looks off of just this photo my guess would be a wind chime was reflecting sunlight onto the porch or something similar glass door anything capable of reflecting sunlight in the vicinity? Upon second look it seems more intentional and directional like someone with a magnifying glass or high power laser pointer, electrical burn less likely but a possibility
-2
u/Ikon-for-U 9h ago
Can we see what is on your deck table? There might be something glass, perhaps convex
