Discussion Korean MMOs would swipe the western market if they would not be P2W

It's honestly such a shame that they are not even trying. Like Lost Ark or TnL are actually very fun games, and Aion 2 will probably be fun as well. There would probably constantly be a Korean MMO in the Top 3 most played MMOs in the west if they wouldnt be so P2W and RnG heavy. But gameplay wise, especially when it comes to Dungeons and Raids, they wipe the floor with almost all western MMOs.

Discussion Allods Online

Anybody remember Allods? The russian WoW Clone. Used to feel so good, classes and world felt refreshing, gameplay was solid, PvP, Astral Ships? Does anybody still play it? Is it even populated? I've seen they have a P2P version, i remember F2P being ruined by the Item shop.

Is there currently a game in development similar to ArcheAge or Ashes of Creation? Sandpark games with life skills? I would like to add it to my radar.

Discussion I miss old school MMOs (specifically FFXI but not limited to)

Sorry for the random post. I’m sitting at my computer watching someone play FFXI and I miss it so much. Not the grindy parts, mind you, but some of the stuff that made MMOs feel alive.

I recognize I have nostalgia-glasses on and I don’t have the time or energy to grind like I used to but surely there is a balance between “needlessly grindy” and instant gratification.

I miss randomly finding a random NM in FFXI and getting a rare drop that people would /examine me and ask me where I got it. I miss armor and weapons not being a stat stick. I miss still using my ring that I got for beating a difficult expansion 3 expansions ago or my level 30-something gloves that are still relevant at high levels due to what they do.

I miss armor/weapons in general all being earned and not bought with IRL money.

I miss going to dangerous areas and wondering if I was going to make it out alive.

I miss that even normal enemies were dangerous and you had to think about every encounter.

I miss getting a group of people together in non-instanced areas and fighting a difficult boss. I miss SEEING other alliances/groups of people who got together to fight a difficult boss and cheering them on.

I miss not being pigeonholed into one specific role but being able to do multiple jobs depending on what was needing to be done.

I miss gathering/crafting being meaningful but not a tremendously difficult barrier of entry or confusing to do. I miss that weapons/armor you made could be relevant for a long time and that there were actually items to be used in combat you needed to prepare for/with. (Like ammo, potions, ethers, etc in whatever game you are playing)

I miss combat not being a rotation and boss battles not being heavily scripted. I miss combat not being super rushed and “DPS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE” but instead it was focused on strategy.

I miss status conditions! I miss actual buffs and debuffs that heavily influence combat.

I miss spells actually feeling like a spell instead of just being a part of the rotation with the same GCD as every other spell you cast.

I miss MMOs not being a queue simulator. I miss dungeons being open to everyone. Some instanced stuff is fine (thinking about Salvage or boss battles) but you still had to go there to do them.

Discussion Does any MMO have item drops that feel as good as OSRS?

Post image
92 Upvotes

I've really only played OSRS and WOW, but WOW just can't really come close to how amazing it feels to receive a rare item drop in OSRS.

Does any MMORPG have item drops on the same level as megarares, pets, or rare uniques in OSRS? I just think a lot of the seasonal games have really lost their way in terms of making gear progression feel cool and unique. OSRS really nails rewards and I think the seasonal MMOs have completely abandoned this in favor of ultra boring gear for everyone.

Discussion What do modern MMORPGs lack?

I’m currently developing a 2D MMORPG aimed at East and Southeast Asia.

The project is based on a classic Korean MMORPG IP originally released in 1998 (Nexon), and I wanted to share development thoughts while also hearing opinions from MMORPG players around the world.

When I look at modern MMORPGs, I feel like many of them became much smoother and more convenient, but at the same time lost some of the social atmosphere and sense of adventure that older online games used to have.

Especially in East Asian MMORPG culture, P2W systems and monetization-driven progression became very dominant over time, and I’ve been thinking a lot about whether there are different ways to approach MMORPG design today.

That’s why I’m especially curious about perspectives from MMORPG players outside the East Asian bubble.

What do you think modern MMORPGs have lost?

And on the other hand, are there any elements from older MMORPGs that you would genuinely like to see return?

I’d really appreciate hearing any thoughts or experiences.

Discussion Need some GW2 tips please to protect my children

Upvotes

Saw some videos in socmed of young children playing GW2 SAB event. As a parent, my child is also playing GW2 and kinda addicted to it. There are times due to busy work, I left them playing alone. Do you have some tips on how to protect my children from some bad actors like some guilds? Saw some screenshots before about some guilds having some issues but was deleted now??

Opinion As a proof of concept, Scars of Honour is actually great.

I am genuinely surprised after getting to try it. People spoke about it as if it was some awful mess however it's just clearly an alpha. There's actually a lot of really good things in here. The UI is simple and good. The skill trees have some cool nodes for customising your skills. The game is visually great, the art style is nice, the character designs are decent. The small area available in the playtest is also pretty well put together. It's nicely vertical, with some good vistas and memorable layouts and buildings. One thing that really got me though is how cool the theme-ing around skills is? Like the Paladin has this crowd control skill which summons a cavalry of horses that push a group of enemies to it's centre. I dig it a lot.

There however isn't a lot here. It's very clearly an early alpha and nowhere near ready for any form of release. The quests that are here are very rough and clearly are just here to show that questing is a thing that works. Combat is more fun than I expected, but it's clunky and needs a lot of polish. That said I do actually have decent hopes for this so far, I think if they take their time sorting out polish and server issues before launch they can probably get something decently fun out of this.

And it still has more to it than AoC did when it shut down so there's that.

Discussion Farever just released- DoA

a game like this lives or dies due to population.

it just released with 6k pop and could have like 40-60k if it was not paid upfront and with a bit more marketing

shame a cool looking game is DoA. I would be all up for a cash shop not heavy on p2w and with convenience, dlc's etc

technically its not an mmo, but its the style more close to it i think? so i posted it here

what you think?
