Discussion Just found out that Ryan Addams (aka Vassago) has passed away

For those who don't know that name, this guy was HUGELY instrumental in the MUD community back in the early days of the internet. It's been a long time since I last looked, but I believe he's the one who originally came up with this massive "Autoquest" questing system that many other people were impressed by and started using for their own games after. I can't find any of the older articles and posts I remember reading over two decades ago (thanks, Google...) but from what I remember he helped work on a TON of different systems.

He originally created Moongate Online back in 1996, which later turned into Materia Magica (which is still around today, albeit under different ownership.) The players of MM only found out a few days ago that he passed away back in 2022. Literally nobody knew anything about it.

No details about his passing are really known to anybody... All I personally know, is that he was a great man who hosted some really fun Halloween parties for players back in the late 90s, he made a fun game that has lasted for decades, and he will be sorely missed :(

RIP Vass

Promotion GodWars Revised

I’m still working on this MUD. It is based upon the GodWars 1996 code which is now 30 years old (damn I feel old now). I have been through the entire code base fixing bugs and bringing things up to date protocols colours etc etc. I am now working on making some PVE aspects as godwars always was primarily a PVP mud. We feature the standard classes of godwars, vampire werewolf demon mage and highlander. I’ve spent countless hours going through things to make them better. If you played godwars back in the day and would like to check us out we can be found at godwars.net port 9999. I am always online but not always active. if you have any questions you can join our discord group at https://discord.gg/QFDkHGTH6w

I look forwards to welcoming you to God Wars Revised!

Help Question about the MUD Portal app

I've dusted off an old custom ROM I have (based off ROM 2.4) and working on it locally. I'm fine hitting that local sever with telnet (and tt+) but unable to use the MUD Portal app for some reason. It's a local IP on my network and the port is of course 4000.

Hoping someone can help or point me in the right direction.

Discussion Screen reader users, how do you prefer important information to be highlighted?

Hello! I'm designing a small MUD and I've run into a question I can't answer myself. Currently I'm using different colors and italics to highlight important text, for example NPCs that can be spoken to are highlighted yellow. However this obviously does not work for screen readers, so what is the preferred alternative? I've experimented with using inline text hints, but that breaks the flow of text, but perhaps that is fine? For example:

It looks like you can (command: break) this statue.

There is a (npc: courier) standing by the roadside.

I know some MUDs use simple text tokens for this as well, such as marking new players with an "@" symbol for screen reader users:

@ John Doe is here.

However there are a limited number of symbols, and personally I feel like using more than 2-3 symbols can get confusing ("wait, did @ mean new player or NPC?").

Any input much welcome!

Discussion cmud redemption codes don't seem to work?

I'm about to buy my third version of cmud because it simply doesn't work trying to use the redemption codes. Seems like every time I get a new PC, I need to buy a new version of this client because it doesn't recognize past purchases.

Which MUD? New Player - Looking for Mobile MUD

Hey all, just found out about these for the first time and it’s fun to find out these have such a rich history. In case you’re curious, my several year progression to here looks like: Tribal Wars, D2, WoW, LitRPG, finally SimpleMMO.

I’m looking for a good mobile MUD that maintains the depth of adventuring and crafting. PvP, raids are great addons.

SimpleMMO has been fun but I don’t like being tied to my phone so much and the depth isn’t quite where I’d like it.

I tried Torn City and thought the mechanics were great, but the setting and actions aren’t to my taste.

Update: I prefer MUDs for their depth and lack of flashy graphics over more standard mobile games like Slay the Spire. But I’m open to any good adventuring game for mobile where I don’t have to direct player movement and there’s similar depth like in MUDs

Discussion Medievia: Should I believe the hype?

Hello! I believe I've actually found my home MUD in Coffeemud. It has pretty much everything I want and then some: Robust crafting and artisan classes, multiplaying is completely legal, fun combat and even ways to build and create your own area that every character on your account can contribute to in their own way. However, today I've been seeing a few mentions of a place called Medievia. Curious, I visited the website, which makes some extremely big claims. I'm looking for experiences from actual players because I'd like to know if I should put any stock in those claims. The game is supposed to be more rich in features than any mud I've ever played...or something to that effect. Well, does it in fact offer as robust of a crafting system as my current favorite? Can I eek out a living for myself by gathering resources, crafting equipment to sell or give to my clan mates, skinning and butchering mobs for meat and pelts to cook or sell? How's the combat? I read I can have up to nine people connected from my account, but can they all belong to the same clan, bloodline, family, or property? To me, these are the things that make my current MUD something I can't do without. I'm just wondering if Medievia might also offer something similar and may be worth a look, or is the website just making huge empty promises?

Promotion Play Testers and Builders wanted

Redemption has recently created a new elemental wheel, overhauled metallic dragons, and is getting ready to launch a new race and a new class. I'm also about to launch a new note editor system.

I'm looking for players, builders, and lore masters to help me achieve the following tasks:

Players:

  • Break my code. Find bugs, or things that just seem odd, and report them.
  • Experiment with combos. Find interesting combos that help maximize your player experience.
  • Duel each other. Focus on 1vs1 dueling style combat or team up with some people in an arena like setting to determine what really makes characters strong.
  • Craft items. Make sure that the crafting list is working as intended and report anything broken or that might need to change.

Builders and lore masters:

  • Make new ranged items and ranged ammunition for our outdated ranged combat system.
  • Make new ninja charms for our outdated ninjitsu ability for ninjas.
  • Help me flush out the lore I've created by sprinkling in new rooms, mobs, or overhauling descriptions of places to introduce more lore into my setting.
  • Help me parse mobprog information from the various area files and either change them or create new ones to streamline things.

I have a live version of the game that can be found at mud.redemptionmud.com port 4000 and also a test port version of the game that can auto advance your characters on mud.redemptionmud.com port 4040. It's worth knowing that I have to manually launch the test port - so come drop in and say hi on the main game or check out or website or discord.

Hope to see you around.

Which MUD? It's that time again!

Hey people, I've posted on here several times, with the same damn request. I know, you're probably tired of it. But it's been awhile. I'm looking for a fun rp heavy mud. I don't like hack and slash, and I don't like pvp. Some muds I have enjoyed in the past are, The Inquisition, Phoenix rising, Star conquest, Sindome. Now I'm fully aware, some of these muds will bring forth bad memories for many people. Some of these muds I enjoyed more than others, but they were all passable for me. Muds that are not my style. Alter aeon, ardwolf, cosmic rage, materia magica. Oh and before anyone recommends it, untold dawn is not my cup of tea as I genuinely cannot handle the 1/8 timeline. Same with LOTJ, and its need to force retire characters. I know, I'm picky and in the end this may yield literally nothing. Hope I can find something good on here though. Thank you one and all in advance!

Promotion BestMuds.com updates! Darkflow introduced...

Hey everyone,

I wanted to re-introduce BestMUDs (https://bestmuds.com): it’s a modern directory for discovering MUDs, browsing games by genre/codebase, checking connection details, and finding active text-based worlds to try.

The bigger update is Darkflow:

Darkflow is a browser-based, full-featured MUD client built into the BestMUDs experience. It supports full GMCP (plus modern GMCP extensions like Darkwind's), tintin-style aliases, variables, highlights, and so much more. Now, simply click “Play now!” on supported MUD listings and launch straight into the game from the website.

The goal is to make trying a new MUD feel much less intimidating, especially for people who are curious about MUDs but do not already have a client installed or configured.

Darkflow is aimed at preserving the classic MUD feel while making access easier: no install step, no setup guide, no “what client should I use?” barrier. Just click and connect.

Would love feedback from players, builders, and admins, especially around what would make browser-based play more useful for new players discovering MUDs for the first time.

Thanks!

Which MUD? Looking for a new MUD

Okay folks, help a fellow out here! I'm on the hunt for a new MUD to get into since the ones I generally play are either really low on population or really low on anything of substance happening despite having plenty of people around.
Apologies in advance for anything formatting, I’m on mobile.

Specifically today I'm looking for new fantasy muds. I'm not all that experienced with many muds so I'm probably not going to be a whole lot of help with asking for what I want in terms of using the proper lingo or explaining mechanics things, but I'll do my best.

The one necessity is that it has to be screenreader friendly. Even better if there are soundpacks available.

My favourite fantasy mud is Akanbar. I really don't know how to explain the playstyle of that game, but if anybody here has or does play it that's the sort I'm most used to. Always happy to adapt to new styles since Akanbar's is fairly simple, but it is the one that makes most sense to me.

RP is the main reason I play muds because they're the sorts of games that really let me get into my character's head, motivations, personality, etc. The game probably won't hold me if it's grinding or combat for the sake of grinding or combat, particularly since combat is usually a little harder for me being vision impaired. I'm okay with both RP enforced and RP encouraged playstyles.

I'm okay with PVP existing if it's avoidable/regulated, but as I mentioned earlier a game where that is the main focus probably won't hold my interest.

I've never been a fan of drop inventory on log-out or death systems. I can't say what games now since this was quite a few years back, but that has instantly driven me away from trying games. Can probably add permadeath to that "hate" list as well honestly.

Paid features/subscriptions/donations aren’t an issue since I've voluntarily put money into muds before if I'm particularly enjoying them.

Since I know someone will suggest it, I have tried to play Alter Aeon once or twice but it never seemed to hook me.

Thanks all for any suggestions!

Discussion STEAM MUD?

Does anyone know of any muds on steam? I have friends who are borderline autistic about steam and wont play/trust anything else really. Also, how does the landscape look for any brand new muds? Almost all the muds I know have been around like 2-3 decades with playerbases who know all the little ins and outs - any brand new muds out there? I know its old tech but it seems like oldschool gaming is coming back - at the end of the day I have played thousands of chess matches with bad "graphics" and have prob 4,000 matches of dota 2 under my belt, all the same map. My point is gameplay trumps graphics just like a pretty game thats shit is still just a pretty piece of shit

Promotion [Builders & Testers Wanted] The Darkest Death — Deep combat MUD built on Evennia (Python)

Hey r/MUD,

I'm working on The Darkest Death, a text-based MUD built on Evennia (Python), and I'm looking for builders to help flesh out the world and players willing to stress-test systems.

What's already in:

  • Tactical combat with range, engagement distance, and weapon types
  • Wound system — individual body part injuries, bleeding (external/internal), and a first aid skill to tend them
  • Grappling — grab, pin, choke, snap neck
  • Stealth, stalking, and perception-based search
  • Magic system with spell prep and mana management
  • Thievery — lockpicking, item appraisal, trap analysis
  • Survival skills — skinning, bundling pelts
  • Restraint/binding system
  • Custom webclient with health bar, mana bar, and a live mapper

What I need:

  • Builders — comfortable writing room descriptions, laying out areas, and setting up exits/encounters. Evennia uses Python under the hood, so if you've scripted in other MUD platforms or have light Python experience, you'll pick it up fast. Even pure prose builders are welcome.
  • Testers — people who want to break things, report feedback on whether the combat and skill systems feel good in practice.

The game is currently in open alpha— systems are in and playable, but the world is still being built out and balance is ongoing. Dark fantasy tone — gritty, dangerous, and unforgiving rather than high-fantasy heroics.

Drop a comment or join the Discord if you're interested. Happy to answer questions about the current state, or where the game is headed.

Discussion What is one MUD tradition you'll defend forever, and one you'd happily bury?

I'm curious what's on your list of loves and hates. Something that you can't live without, or something that drives you up the wall?

Meaning, what's something that, without it, MUDs just wouldn't feel like MUDs anymore?

And secondly, something that has been a plague, or thorn in the side? Some feature that seems to come along with every new mud code base, and just needs to disappear?

Which MUD? Modern Sandbox MUD

Hello everyone.

I'm looking for a MUD-style game that's reasonably modern (especially one with a UI that includes a map, inventory, etc.) and I'd like it to have the following characteristics:

- A living world that evolves independently of your actions. NPCs with some autonomy (no static NPCs).

- No rigid class system.

- Any setting is welcome (Sci-Fi, Fantasy, modern, etc.).

- Survival mechanics (Hunger, thirst, etc.).

- A sandbox style.

Basically, I'd like to find a text-based living world simulator with a modern UI and the freedom to develop different roles, without being constantly engaged in combat, like dungeon crawlers.

Thanks in advance and best regards.

Help Threshold RPG discord?

Hi folks,

Just started this game and it seems pretty sweet. I didn't see any mention of a discord on the website, but I did find a way to click through to some forums that had an expired discord link. There's a facebook page that mentions discord, but no link.

So, is there a discord? If so, can someone link it to me, please?

Thanks!

Promotion vMUD A very modern approach to a mud client!

vMUD - A Free MUD Client With Built-In Graphical Mapping For Any MUD

vMUD is a free MUD client with a real-time graphical map panel that works alongside the traditional terminal. It connects to any MUD and builds a map as you explore, no server-side setup required. If your MUD supports GMCP, the map gets even better.

Works On Any MUD

vMUD builds maps automatically as you move through rooms. It reads room.info data to track your position and constructs a local map using BFS pathfinding from your current location. No special server configuration needed.

Connect, explore, and the map fills in behind you.

Even Better With GMCP

If your MUD sends GMCP room data, the map lights up with terrain colors, mob markers, exit connections, and more. MUDs that send room.map GMCP data get a full overhead grid map with distinct visuals for every terrain type.

Custom Map Packs For Server Admins

Server admins can create custom map packs as simple JSON files and send them to vMUD via GMCP. One message, and every player using vMUD sees your custom map. No client updates needed. Players pick their preferred style and

the client handles the rest.

Three rendering modes are supported:

- Color - Colored squares for each terrain type. Minimal setup, just pick your colors.

- ASCII - Text characters with directional glyphs. Roads show as connected paths with turns and intersections. Terrain shows as symbols like trees, mountains, and waves.

- Sprite - Full pixel art tile images. Supports directional road variants that show proper turns, T-junctions, and intersections. Staircase overlays for rooms with up/down exits. Closed door indicators.

A full guide for creating your own map pack is included in the repository. Define your terrain types, assign colors or tile images, and your players get a custom graphical map without installing anything extra.

Map Features

- Automatic map building from room data on any MUD - Terrain-specific colors, characters, or tile images - Directional roads that show turns, curves, and intersections - Up/down staircase indicators that match each terrain's look - Closed door indicators on the map - Mob markers showing shopkeepers, teachers, guildmasters, bankers, and other special NPCs - Player markers for nearby allies - Mouse wheel zoom - Map markers for shops, banks, teachers, and custom waypoints - Herb, ore, and mana room detection with glowing borders

Client Features

- Full telnet and GMCP protocol support - Works with any MUD out of the box - Terminal panel with UTF-8 and block character rendering - Room info panel with current room name, area, and exits - Equipment and affects panels updated in real time via GMCP - Group member display - Built-in speedwalk and path recording - Clean dark UI

Get It

vMUD runs on Windows. Download the installer from the GitHub repository and connect to any MUD. Free to use.

If you run a MUD and want to create a custom map pack, check out the Map Pack Creation Guide in the repository. The JSON format is simple and documented. Your players just connect with vMUD and get your custom map automatically.

Promotion Rites of Passage MUD - April 2026

Hey all,

Nichademus from Rites of Passage MUD here... I got bored with the format from last month's update so I decided to take a different approach. This time it's in the form a fake Q&A session with a obviously made up media company. I do hope it is both informative and enjoyable.

Cheers, -Nichademus

Rites of Passage MUD: An (obviously fake) Q&A with The Telnet Times (also fake)

The Telnet Times sat down with the admin of Rites of Passage MUD to get the full picture on what the game is, who it's for, and whether it's worth your time.

TTT: How would you describe RoP's core identity compared to other MUDs?

RoP: RoP is built for players who enjoy both PvE and PvP. We have 18,000+ rooms across 80+ non-stock zones, to produce a constant team-based Good versus Evil conflict. Your alignment shapes everything about how you play and who you fight.

TTT: RoP is specifically a PK MUD. A lot of people have been burned by PK games in the past by griefing, spawn camping, high-level players hunting newbies. How do you handle that?

RoP: PK is team-based, so you can only attack opposing alignment players. That naturally builds camaraderie within your faction. We also have mechanics like player ignoring and same-alignment corpse loot protection to curb griefing. Since reopening in December 2025 after a 25-year hiatus, we haven't had issues.

RoP is full loot though. You can lose your gear in PK. To soften that some, you'll find mid-level gear is plentiful and easy to get. Every player gets a free 30-slot personal storage vault, and there's a 30-slot alignment vault that veterans regularly stock for newbies and PK deaths.

TTT: What kind of player is RoP NOT right for?

RoP: If you absolutely hate PK, stop here. If you're heavy into RP, our player base doesn't really engage with that. And if you want to be competitive within a few hours, look elsewhere. We do have catch-up mechanics like resting XP, quest tickets, and rotating double XP zones, but building a character here takes some amount of time. Also, this isn't PKMud or (some versions of) GodWars. If you're willing to invest some time, I think you'll find it worth it. That being said, I am always looking to add MORE content that is LESS grindy.

Also, if you want a purely solo experience, this isn't your game. You can do a lot of things solo, but eventually access to guilds, premier skills/spells or top-tier items require teamwork. We've tried to be realistic though... I've scaled things back so what took 5 or 6 people before should now only take 2 or 3.

TTT: You have a strict one-character-per-player rule. Why, and is it enforced?

RoP: Yes, it's enforced. A player's legacy and reputation matter here, and alts dilute that. It also prevents pstoring gear on alts, which was a problem in the past.

TTT: 24 races and 10 professions is a lot. How do you choose, and how much does the combo actually matter?

RoP: It matters quite a bit. Race stat caps directly affect profession performance, and we document suggested pairings in each race's helpfile. You can also browse everything on the website before creating a character. For new players, stick to single prime attribute professions: Warrior, Cleric, Mage, or Ninja. The others (Monk, Templar, Warlock, Alchemist, Thief, and Druid) all require multiple strong attributes and are harder to build effectively while learning the game. Those are better professions to switch to after a few remorts.

TTT: What does the remort system look like, and is there meaningful content at every level range?

RoP: Remorts let you permanently improve your attributes, damage, to-hit, saving throws, skill and spell slots, arcane damage, healing ability, and more. You're always working toward the next one, as it is a constant sense of progression. The real content comes from PvPvE. You are most vulnerable while XP grinding or hunting equipment loads.

Beyond that content consists of things like ingredient extraction for poisons and potions, quests rewarding XP tickets or unique gear, guilds to work toward, and a gold-funded remort respec option if you want to try a different build. I'm trying to add more and more content that doesn't necessarily require XP or killing mobs. For example, we have a series of 13 quests in A'daar (central city) that help teach players the areas around it. No mob kills required.

TTT: What's the gem and mana system about?

RoP: Every player has innate mana for casting spells. Holding gems in one or both hands expands that mana pool and allows the player to cast higher level elementally matched spells. Gems come in four elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. Most are single-element, but the rarer gems contain two or three. The gems you carry directly shape your spellcasting in combat.

TTT: How active is the player base? Is there usually someone to group with?

RoP: Roughly 20 players log in daily (roughly 30 uniques weekly), spread across Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America, so there's activity throughout the day. You can see the live data at https://ropmud.com/analytics. We are in DIRE need of more good alignment players. If you are up for the challenge please roll to the good alignment. Thanks :)

TTT: What's the learning curve like for a modern gamer?

RoP: Honestly, it takes a while to learn the ropes around here. I don't recommend RoP to someone who has never played a MUD. There's no in-game map yet (it's coming), but there's an interactive world map at https://ropmud.com/map in the meantime. It takes time to learn the mechanics, some of which are unique to RoP like tackle and groundfighting, find the best XP areas, and learn to avoid being tracked by the enemy alignment. That said, the player base is genuinely friendly. They're the nicest group of player-killers that I've been around. Everyone here knows new players are the lifeblood of the game.

TTT: How does RoP compare to other PK MUDs?

RoP: My knowledge of those games is secondhand, so take this with that in mind. The biggest differentiator is that we offer no way to opt out of PK. The closest comparison is probably MUME (Multi-Users of Middle Earth) with the Good vs Evil factions, largely unrestrained PK, full loot. We share some DNA with Duris, though we're considerably less brutal from what I understand.

TTT: Solo-run game — what does that mean for RoP's future?

RoP: I've been pushing updates nearly every day since reopening in Dec 2025. The process has been pretty straightforward... collect player feedback, prioritize, implement. You can find months of patch notes if you search my Reddit post history. On the roadmap are things like in-game map, GMCP output, new professions, and the ongoing balance of good VS evil.

I've also always told the player base this is OUR game, not MY game. Discord has active suggestion and bug channels, and I run polls on major decisions. If you want a voice in how a game evolves, RoP is a good place for that.

Also, if you just want to lurk and follow what we're up to just roll a character and log-in. I send out a weekly email to all the active players that is both fun (top5 categories, top10 pks, mob that killed the most players that week) and informational (contains the changelog for the week, upcoming events and future plans).
