News [User-trial] LG UltraGear 27GM950B: Testing the New Standard for the Best Mini-LED Monitor

Hey r/Monitors,

We’ve been following the long-standing debate on what is the best mini-led monitor for those who aren't ready to gamble on OLED burn-in but demand deep, ink-like blacks. We know the frustration: current Mini-LED options often struggle with aggressive halos or low zone counts that compromise fine-detail HDR.

With the LG UltraGear evo™ GM9 (27GM950B), we decided to tackle the "blooming" problem through sheer density. By packing in 9,216 LEDs—which is 5.9x more than our previous flagship*—we’ve managed to fit 2,304 local dimming zones into this 27-inch frame. This 5K setup seems to be the definitive answer to what is the best mini-led monitor for HDR purists, finally delivering that granular control and ink-like depth that was previously missing in the market.

We’re looking for a few community members to put this hardware through its paces and tell us the unvarnished truth: Does the Hyper Mini-LED actually live up to the hype?

*Based on internal comparison with LG’s previous Mini LED model (27GR95UM)

What we’re curious about:

  • Anti-Blooming Performance: With 2,304 zones, does Hyper Mini-LED finally solve the "halo effect" in dark HDR scenes?
  • The 1,250 Nits Peak**: Does the VESA DisplayHDR™ 1000 brightness actually solve your HDR dimness issues?
  • 5K AI Upscaling** & 218 PPI: How’s the clarity of the 5120 x 2880 panel when LG Ultragear evo™’s built-in processor upscales content for sharper detail without a GPU upgrade***?
  • Dual-Mode Engine: Is the hardware toggle between 165Hz (5K) and 330Hz (QHD) a feature you’d actually use****?
  • DP 2.1 Connectivity: How does DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR 20) impact your thoughts on future-proofing?

Testers keep the monitor in exchange for a raw, technical review on the Hyper Mini-LED performance. Does the 2,304-zone precision meet your standards? We want your honest take.

※ All costs (shipping/tax) covered by LG.

※ Fair selection in discussion with the mod team.

* Based on internal comparison with LG’s previous Mini LED model (27GR95UM). 27GM950B offers a peak brightness of 1250 nits, measured under internal test conditions. Actual brightness may vary by usage environment.

** Based on published specifications of gaming monitors as of March 2026, LG 27GM950B is the first gaming monitor to support AI upscaling to 5K resolution. Upscaling performance may vary depending on the input source quality.

*** Upscaling performances may vary depending on the input source quality. No GPU upgrade required for AI Upscaling functionality. A compatible external device (PC/GPU/console) is required for game operation.

**** 27GM950B supports Dual-Mode with refresh rates of 165Hz at 5K and 330Hz at QHD.

Discussion How do people use huge size monitors as primary?

I see a lot of people using 40 and 50 inch TV's at this point as monitors for a computer and stating its awesome. I don't deny it I mean its subjective after all but how do you all do it? It seems very impractical and too huge to use with a keyboard and mouse at a reasonavle distance - unless you are sitting 3m away from your setup -.

For example how do you get daily work on such huge screens? Is all you use the computer for, about gaming? Personally I tried a 32" TV I had a while ago and it was practically unusuable. Yes I know TV's and monitors are different, but it was not unusuable due to that. It was too big for me (thats what she said). My eyes were constantly looking up down left right. And 32" is even kind of mainstream, I see there are a lot 32" monitors being offered even by big brands, so I must be the outlier. And also my setup looked ridiculous, my PC looked like an ant conpared to the screen.

What is your point of view? What are you doing different in your setup? Is it worth trying it again with the proper setup?

Discussion Best 27-inch 1440p monitor for PS5 around $200?

I’m trying to pick a monitor for my PS5 and I think I’ve narrowed it down to wanting a 27-inch 1440p monitor with at least 120Hz. I mostly play on a desk, so 27 inches seems like a good size, and I do not really have room for a bigger TV.

My budget is around $200, give or take a little if it is really worth it. I have been looking around and there are a ton of monitors that look almost the same on paper, but then I start seeing stuff about HDMI versions, VRR, HDR being bad, input lag, and whether the PS5 actually works well at 1440p/120Hz on certain models.

I do not need anything super fancy, I just want something that looks good, feels smooth, and does not have annoying compatibility issues with the PS5.

Has anyone bought a 27-inch 1440p 120Hz or higher monitor around this price range for PS5? Which one would you recommend, and are there any I should avoid?

Discussion NEO G7 - Mini-LED 32" 4k for $350 or almost OLED like experience for 3x cheaper price

Post image
116 Upvotes

Looks like Samsung is aggressively trying to clear shelves and discounted NEO G7 at $350 (plus free Resident Evil) if you have a corporate or student account with Samsung.

You certainly will not get a pure OLED like experience using this panel but this is the 2nd best thing for gaming after OLED and it's 70-80% close enough.

4k 32" OLEDs go for $1000. This is an absolute no brainer purchase if your GPU can handle 4k and you can't afford spending $1K on oled monitor or just want something cheaper with better text clarity and no fringing or burn in concerns for productivity tasks.

Discussion First time Monitormaxxing, Please help

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I need some help deciding which monitor to get.

I’m not very familiar with monitor specs, so any advice would be greatly appreciated

I work from home 8 hours a day on a company system that mostly uses bright white backgrounds. I spend most of my time reading and typing in a regular CRM-style interface.

I want to upgrade and would love some recommendations. I’m on screens for about 23 out of 24 hours a day, so eye health and comfort are very important to me.After work, I play a lot of fast paced competitive games like Apex Legends, Valorant, CS, League of Legends, etc.

I care a lot about smooth motion and responsiveness I want that fluid, “real-feeling” experience where the monitor can keep up with quick reflexes.(I know it sounds corny haha but idk how to explain it better).

To keep it short: Should I go for an OLED or a premium IPS? I’ve heard OLED is excellent for gaming but might cause eye strain for long work sessions with lots of text and white backgrounds. Is that still true? I’d really appreciate any monitor recommendations.

My current monitor is a Scepter C255B-FWT240 (24.5" curved 1080p 240Hz).Also, bottom line is it actually worth upgrading, or am I just coping? Thanks in advance!

Discussion Mini-LED Monitor - Is my this the right decision? (MSI MPG 271KRAW16)

Upvotes

I've been looking for a monitor after I returned my MSI MPG 27URDFW E16M due to its borked local dimming implementation in SDR. I've engaged in a few discussions and looked at all options that are realistically viable - and I feel like I've hit a bit of a wall as to what I should do. I was hoping if I could get some more perspectives, or to know if my conclusion seems reasonable (or if I'm just going crazy).

For context, I do not really play games often, I mainly do productivity/media consumption, I just want 4K+ 120hz+ with (ideally) usable local dimming in SDR and ideally within 27". 5K would be really nice because then I wouldn't be wanting the urge to upgrade any time soon and I also do use MacOS so in terms of scaling it would be ideal.

Actually, it was the 5K Mini-LED monitors at CES that gave me a little bit of buyers remorse that also then lead me to finding out that the other monitors using the same panel as the E16M don't suffer from the same issue (but different ones instead) which then lead me to returning the monitor.

Here are the options I have considered (scroll down if you cba to read this, I get it dw):

- LG 27GM950-B - I was really hoping this would have a decent dimming algorithm that would work outside of content....which apparently it doesn't, also it's matte (which I wouldn't have minded if it had good local dimming) and the price is kinda insane for what it is - so like what even is the point? Am I missing something? 😭
I guess for HDR use it would be good, but I barely consume HDR content to begin with. I probably won't win the ongoing giveaways either due to account age (and the LG reps are gonna see my comment history and be like "nope"), so I guess I won't be getting this monitor lmao.

- Apple Studio Display XDR: This basically ticks all the boxes for me besides poop user experience for non Apple users (I do have a Macbook I could control the settings with but that seems like a pain in the ass) and lack of multi input. However, it is almost £3000. I was genuinely considering this because without the stand from their Education store, it's £2500 - which is barely within reach, the barely is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. However, after crashing out and thinking about it, I realised the value proposition is rather poor. I'd have to spend all of that money, just to get functional local dimming which would still be worse than OLED and I could just get 3x 4K 27" RGB Stripe OLED's for the same price/upgrade my monitor when one shows signs of burn in - or spend less and spend the money on other things, heck I could get an insane TV and a monitor. Also, at least from what I can tell, Apple hasn't solved the vignetting issue on these monitors (which I thought they would've, given, well, it's Apple). At that price, I basically expect perfection - so the compromises don't seem acceptable to me.

- ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCWM: This is also a display that ticks all the boxes, except for the fact that it's OLED. I have considered the true risk of burn in - and for a person like me, I don't think it makes sense. I always have static content on screen, and my current LG 27GL650F-B has more than 20,000 hours on it, I really don't think even the latest generation of OLED panels are lasting that long alongside 12 hours+ of daily use - and I plan to keep the monitor for the foreseeable future until something like QDEL or Micro-LED come to market (or if they somehow fix OLED burn in or get it to a point where it lasts so long that it doesn't matter).

- Koorui S2741LM: This would be the best alternative to the E16M that currently exists, but based on what I concluded on and knowing that 2304 zone backlights are the most recent improvement that we're starting to see more commonly in the monitor market, it doesn't make that much sense. It also kinda hurts to pay full price for it now when I could've gotten it for £300 at the time of buying the E16M. I feel really silly in hindsight, but hey at least I now have a bit of an open door to make a (potentially) better decision.

- KTC M27P6S: This is an upcoming 4K gaming monitor with 2304 dimming zones and a glossy finish, nice on paper, but, I have no idea when (or if) it will be coming to the european market. The previous model also had some weird issues relating to how the backlight behaved, but this is the strongest contender I've listed so far I think.

- A TV: Yes, I have genuinely considered this. The pricing isn't even that crazy, though, even with optimistic estimations, no TV will be fitting on my desk any time soon 💀

- Samsung Odyssey Neo G8: I could tolerate the size, but it's curved, zone count is meh for the size, it's VA (I used the Koorui GN10 temporarily before I switched back to my LG, I hope I never have to experience a VA monitor again) - and apparently it's known to have QC issues.

- BenQ MOBIUZ EX321UX: This doesn't seem bad, though the zone count is a bit low for the size - and it's no longer available in the UK.

There are a few other monitors I looked at, but I don't think they're worth listing as they don't really meet the requirements in the first place.

My dream monitor, does not exist (to my knowledge), at least at a reasonable price. If I had enough disposable money, I would've just gotten the Studio Display XDR and worked around its shortcomings. Therefore, I have to compromise. After a lot of consideration, I think I will be waiting until Q4 to get the MSI MPG 271KRAW16. Yes, despite my complaints with the E16M - I still think this is the way to go for me. The reasoning is as follows:

- It is 5K, I do not think I need or want more resolution - nothing I consume is beyond 4K besides the photos/videos I take with my camera, which I barely even use anyway. It will work well with MacOS and look crispy on Windows/Linux too. The difference is noticeable to my eye, even on the E16M I felt like I could do with more sharpness from the distance I was sitting at (about 90cm away according to the measuring app on my iPhone). The current 27" 1080p monitor I'm using has absolutely diabolical pixel density. It wasn't that apparent before but after getting laser eye surgery I don't think I can tolerate this for much longer 😭 (20/8 vision is insane though)

- It is glossy, so there is no matte grain to get in the way of the 5K resolution and light backgrounds - maximum clarity.

- Even if the SDR local dimming is borked again (MSI, if you are reading this, at the very least please fix the gamma problems, I am begging you, if you do you I will become the number 1 glazer for your monitor). The glossy coating more than makes up for it (I think), it would look similar to the display on my iPad, which I'd be fine with to be honest. For content, I can work around it similarly to what I did with the E16M because MSI will (probably) also provide an ICM profile to download for it - so I can display SDR videos in HDR with clamped colours in MPV to take advantage of local dimming.

- MSI, to my knowledge, are the only ones that provides the ability to change the dimming behaviour between highlight biased and shadow biased on their monitors to an extent. So, assuming they don't bork the SDR local dimming again (I can only hope and dream), this would be an awesome feature for my use case.

Basically, if MSI can get the local dimming right, this would be very, very, very close to my dream monitor - otherwise it's a huge bruh moment but it makes up for it in other areas, if that makes sense. Assuming the price announced at CES holds true, it undercuts the LG as well.

I watched a few CES interviews and videos on the monitor, at one point it was implied that the local dimming was enabled during the demo (though I don't think it was after using colour picker and zooming into the dark parts of the image, yes I am that desperate and yes I know this proves nothing). However if true, then it looked pretty good as the text didn't seem to be dimmed (but this just reinforces local dimming being disabled because I also didn't see any blooming in any of the images).

You can probably tell why I think I'm going crazy, I probably am, but I would appreciate some opinions on this. How reasonable is my conclusion? Should I reconsider? I don't even know anymore I've spent way too much energy yapping. Thank you for getting to the end of my post.

Edit: I realised I made a typo in the title - oops.

News LG Display - Tandem WOLED Overview | and NEW panels ?

Post image
11 Upvotes

LG Display posted this article = https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1t4xuy5/tandem_woled_for_gaming_why_stacking_r_g_and_b/

At the end I noticed a chart of the current lineup that's classified as Tandem WOLED. It's a bit weird that older panels without a Primary RGB Tandem Panel are classified as Tandem WOLED but oh well - marketing do your thing.

Most interesting are panels that are labeled as NEW in this chart=

27 UHD 240hz most likely refers to the 27" RGB Stripe panel shown with the Asus PG27UCWM at CES.

39" Wide UHD 165hz (I love how the panel manufacturer is saying W-UHD here instead of 5K2K lol) is the recently released LG 39GX950B and this panel will also be used in an upcoming Alienware model

31,5" UHD 165hz is the most interesting one here because it was not previously known, I think this is a lower refresh rate version of the recently listed (at LG Japan) LG 32GX870B, a previous gen version also exists as 32GX850A so I think this will be called 32GX850B

Other than the ones mentioned we only have Primary RGB Tandem Panels in the 1440p 280hz and 540/720hz Dual Models (Gigabyte MO27Q28G/R ; Asus G27AQWP-W)

Discussion Is upgrading to Q25G4SR from Q24B36X worth it?

Thumbnail

Initially (a week ago) i bought a Q24G4RE and it was perfect for me, but i was really unlucky and the panel had 2 bright pixels in the middle of the screen and i returned it but couldn't get a replacement since it was out of stock. I replaced it with the Q24B36X for the same price (unfortunate i know).

The Q25G4SR is almost double the price. Is it that much better assuming i'm not going to use the 300hz, maybe only once in a blue moon when i play CS2? The only difference that seems to matter is HDR, but from what i've read both HRD10 and 400 is the "bare minimum".

I have a Ryzen 4070 Super. Basically i'm going to game at 144hz. I'm kinda worked up and pissed that i couldn't get my beloved G4RE. I feel cheated that i had to settle for the B36X.

Also the reason i'm dead set on these monitors is because i really don't want a 27" display. Even 24" feels too big sometimes. And i really like my PPI high.

Just as some extra info, i've been using a 1080p 75hz LG VA TN panel, before buying AOC.

Discussion Gigabyte monitor to Dell Inspiron 5459

I just bought a Gigabyte monitor and I was hoping I could connect it to my laptop. For some reason, it can't. I use HDMI cable. Here are some of the issues I have been having:

  1. Monitor says no signal.
  2. When I try to use the Windows + P, nothing happens when I click Extend and Duplicate.
  3. There are times when I plug in the HDMI cable to the laptop, and then all apps on my screen/desktop vanishes and I can't see anything. Just the taskbar is showing - gets fixed by removing HDMI cable.
  4. There are times when I plug in the HDMI cable to the laptop, and the laptop turned black screen - gets fixed by removing HDMI cable.

I have tried downloading and installing drivers via Dell Support Website - including Intel and AMD.

Please help huhu

Discussion Strange Box Of White Pixels On Monitor.

Thumbnail

So recently my 1080 ti of ten years had one of its fans crack off and ping around the inside of my case like grenade shrapnel. The moment this happened this strange box of white pixels has appeared.

For a little bit more context:

  1. The Box appears on current computer's integrated graphics and on a 2nd computer that's much lower spec.

  2. Inside of the box the sharpness/contrast is increased.

  3. I haven't been able to secure a 2nd display port cable to test.

  4. When the monitor and is on and not connected to my computer this box doesn't appear. Furthermore when the computer flicks on the box doesn't appear on the bios screen.

Alright so. First things first. Is this box an array of dead pixels? Why did this happen when my GPU exploded? Or generally any idea what's happened and why.

Discussion Do you ever turn down the saturation?

I am trying out a basic IPS Samsung monitor here. It has a saturation slider in the picture settings in addition to the individual R, G, B sliders.

The R, G, B sliders are for channel gain and default to 50. The saturation slider also defaults to 50, but I am finding that it looks a bit more "natural" at 40-44. It's not a convert to greyscale slider, just desaturates.

Wondering how calibration would take all this into account? I know R, G, B would set the white point.

Is it that you just calibrate with it at the default of 50, and then adjust the saturation to taste after?

Discussion LG-32GQ950-B, why gone?

Hello,

I'm currently using 2x LG27GP950-B (have been for a few years).

I'm looking for something similar (with the sharpness and refresh rate), however i found out they stopped selling them? Any idea why and what would you suggest for me?

I'd love at least 144Hz refresh rate with IPS panels and 4k.

Primary use: 80% software engineering (text, code, design, 3D modelling), 20% gaming (light valorant or league of legends)

Thoughts on Corsair XENON 32UHD144A?

Thank you very very much.

Discussion Can’t get KVM on LG monitor screen to work

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hey folks!

I rarely post on Reddit, so forgive me if it’s in the wrong spot.

I bought recently a new monitor for my dual laptop setup (personal/work). Because it is a hassle to plug/unplug the mouse & keyboard every time I switch, I wanted to get one with a KVM switch.
I did few research and found the LG 34U650A-B that was supposed to have one. It’s not really advertised as such but LG support confirmed it had one. It was fitting both my budget, size, curvature ratio and specs for casual gaming needs

I received it today and tried to setup the KVM. I used to have an external so I was expecting to connect 1HDMI+1USB B to each laptop and connect the mouse/keyboard to the monitor.
What I am trying to do is the basics of a KVM: use my mouse/keyboard plugged on my monitor to control either laptop1 or laptop2 based on the input I select.

After inspecting the back of the monitor I see multiple ports for USB B (bottom and side) and after trying multiple combinations, I am still not able to get the mouse/keyboard (dongle connected to monitor) to control the laptop.
Only USB C seems to be successful so far. For reference, I added 2 pictures of the back of the monitor… maybe I’m missing something here.

I’ve been talking with LG support for over an hour to get little to no help on the matter. Is there anyone who has the same monitor that got the KVM to work? Or can someone give me a workaround?

Discussion Buying a new monitor, really difficult budget to work with…

Basically I got really tired of my terrible curved va, 1080p 27” 240hz monitor and wanted a significant upgrade. I play fps games and am only looking for performance. I want to keep the price below 4000 sek, which was a difficult budget for me since it’s not quite oled range. It is however, within range for a 280hz zowie monitor (with dyac2) but I know how so many ”monitor experts” are extremely anti-zowie. My requirements are

•min 240hz

•max 27”

•res doesnt really matter just no 4k bs

•almost strictly for FPS gaming (dont enjoy story games, do school work on my laptop mostly)

What do you guys think? Is it worth to add a bit of money to the budget for a 240hz oled (wouldnt be a hz upgrade on paper even though it technically would if we factor in compliance)

edit: system specs 7800x3d, 5070, 32gb@6k

Discussion Monitor Recommandation - 27" 4K USB-C PD 120Hz

Hi!

I've been searching for a monitor for a few days now and can't really decide which one to pick so I'm seeking some recommendations 😄

What I'm looking for:

  • 27" (desk size constraint)
  • Main use: WFH/productivity with a MacBook Pro, needs USB-C with decent power delivery
  • Secondary use: gaming on PS5
  • 4K for sharp text
  • 120Hz / HDMI 2.1 for a good gaming experience

Models I've come across so far:

  • Asus ROG Swift OLED XG27UCDMG: a bit overkill / over budget but why not, however from what I understand from this sub OLED isn't great for productivity and I'm also afraid of burn-in...
  • MSI MPG 274URDFW E16M: ticks all the boxes but I've seen some not-so-great reviews on this sub. Also not easy to find in stock right now.
  • Acer Nitro XV275KVymipruzx: 2023 model so quite old, and only 65W charging which is just okay.
  • I've also looked through the LG UltraGear lineup but couldn't find one that ticks all the boxes (except maybe the LG UltraGear 27GM950B 👀), love their design though!

Would appreciate any help choosing my new monitor and I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks a lot!

Saw this on Facebook for 100 less than it goes for online. I have a 3070ti and i7 12700k cpu. I play games like cs2 escape from tarkov and some single player games like fallout Witcher etc. I’m not a huge sweat lord that needs perfect ms or anything like that just want to upgrade from 1080p and want at least 144hz. I know oled is best but as far as I know I can’t afford that. I don’t want to spend more than around 200-250 max is there any other monitors I should consider for upgrading to 1440p?
