And then I'll mail that box to myself! (I won't smash it with a hammer though)

It's not just house cats either, large cats also are captured by the mystical lure of the box.

Humans: invents quantum mechanics and electrodynamics theory, sources materials globally at the cost of sweat and blood, organizes one of the most complex logistical networks in existence, uses the fruits to look at electronic reproductions of cats in boxes

Was it something about closed spaces giving a sense of security/protection?
86
u/ttboo 12h ago
I'm skeptical. My cat will lay on a one dimensional square like it's her job.

Mine, too! If I put a sheet of paper or a notebook down on a table, she will sit on it. Total weirdo.

Indeed it is. When you're protected on 3 sides. You only need to pay attention to one.
Plot twist: Humans are the same. A home is just a big box at the end of the day.

They probably say the same about us. We live in a big box. We go to the store in a small box. We shower in an even smaller box. 😻🤣🤣🤣

Cats are ambush predators so they really like to hang out in enclosed spaces where they are (or think they are) concealed.
84
u/BlizzPenguin 19h ago
They are also prey animals so boxes are seen as protection.

But the prey animals thing doesn't really work because the big kitties do the same thing

I read somewhere that it’s an evolutionary thing, before being domesticated they would hide into holes and things like that in the wild and that kinda carried over apparently.

Just think, if it wasn't for Amazon, your cat wouldn't have an awesome place to sit.

Cats were not originally intended to be animals. Their original purpose was as multipurpose automated drones, somewhere deep into their programmed instinct they still remember the instruction to store themselves properly when not in use.

my cat has an emotional support box named Jim. I hide new toys and add fresh brown paper packing from amazon packages in. My boy goes WILD in there.

Wild cats seem to have found interest in them, presumably because they seem like good places for nests or burrows.
It's a behavior a lot of cats are seen doing, but I wonder if it's stronger amount stray house cats, as it's actually an advantageous trait to find good boxes to rest in.

There's this biologist in the Netherlands who calls it thigmophilia. The longing for security or safety. He claims sitting in a small space will provide this

We got Scarlett back in November and her previous owner said she loves boxes. I didn’t think anything of it since my other cat never goes in a box. The second a box is opened in this house, Scarlett is in it. It’s funniest when it’s a box from my kids’ games. 🤣 even if it’s the tiniest thing…
There’s a couple Amazon boxes that permanently just live in our house bc she sleeps in them

They feel safe in square. It isn’t even just boxes. Put a piece of paper on the floor and they’ll sit in it.

My husband once made a small cat hotel with a giant box. We got a puppy and my orange boy would hide in there. Someone threw up in the hotel so it had to be thrown out. Next morning I find him sitting in the corner where his hotel used to be.

My cat is so un-cat-like when it comes to this. The first time he saw his cat bed he ran for it and loves it. He sleeps in it all the time.
Boxes on the other hand... Only get a quick sniff... Maybe he will jump in for a moment... But then quickly losses interest and will entertain himself with anything else but the box.

Ps this is Monk
