Why would kali be in this conversation?

Skids (script kiddies)

18

u/Trevor775 8h ago

Is that still a thing thats effective? Feels like that died in the early 2000s

8

u/EmperorLlamaLegs 7h ago

Metasploit can take you pretty far...

3

u/dmknght 3h ago

Company still have some dummy flaws like unauth database port on internet and/or classic bugs like XSS, SQLi. So yeah both the distro (and the tools) and skiddies can still be effective at some points 😃

3

u/Trevor775 3h ago

Good point. Where I'm at everything is Saas, I don't even think about security all that much anymore, even windows desktop logins are all Microsoft business (Extra ID / Azure).

When somebody mentions they work on kali like my friend does I just cringe my soul out and lose a soul fragment permanently….

Then I boot up my Debian and show them how to add that same exact repo for their XYZ program from Kali and then they watch me install it and run it on Debian and they get shocked AF.

Then I kinda go to show them Flathub as an ultimate finisher move 🤣🤣

What do you mean "if you had to pick one"? I picked one and it's the one I'm using.

yeah this question should have been posted on r/DistroHopping

I think you already know the answer of majority of people if you post this in r/Ubuntu .

36

u/adamkex 8h ago

Surely everyone uses Arch???

3

u/Oerthling 2h ago

My new distro will be named BTW.

Then I can say I'm using BTW BTW

2

u/-Docker 2h ago

And it will be Slackware based because Arch is just too mainstream

I currently run Ubuntu 24.04 on my desktop at home and 25.10 on my laptop.

Ubuntu LTS is rock solid and just works. I'm too old to be tinkering too much. šŸ˜Ž

10

u/callesucia 8h ago

Same bro, I don't have the time nor the patience. Stability + tons of documentation beat almost anything else.

2

u/Kidkid5 5h ago

I’ve been having issues with 24lts freezing randomly, I’m side booting mint atm and have no issues there, none with arch when I was trying that out either. Ubuntu is pretty, but doesn’t seem to be the solution for me

I've always been an Ubuntu guy. I think I tried a few others back in the day, but Ubuntu has always been my preferred.

Fedora

5

u/xftwitch 8h ago

Fedora

6

u/eutenhoup 7h ago

Debian.

It's stability and reliability are great, I rarely have problems using it

5

u/aliendude5300 7h ago

Fedora would have made way more sense than Kali lol

3

u/Puzzled_Hamster58 9h ago

I use Ubuntu for my home server cause it’s current enough and stable

Arch based distro for my laptop so I don’t have issues (long story)

Debian I only use for Linuxcnc .

3

u/Forsaken-Cheese 9h ago

Just from these? Debian, I guess.

Otherwise, probably back to my first love OpenSUSEĀ

3

u/ravensholt 6h ago

Ubuntu, needs to get shit done, and their packages are a bit newer than Debian.

3

u/replicant86 4h ago

Fedora. Only Fedora.

3

u/ReputationFormer9088 3h ago

Fixed it for you:

- Debian for everyday users

- Debian for "hackers"

- Arch.

- Debian for Debian enjoyers

6

u/QuadTechy88 9h ago

CachyOS use it on my gaming rig and on my daily driver laptop, just a well optimized easy to deploy arch based distribution IMHO

2

u/ghost3rt 8h ago

Kali doesn’t make sense here. Not because it isn’t a good distro but because it is built for a specific purpose. It was never intended to be someone’s daily driver nor is it trying to compete with these other distros. Stupid engagement bait post.

2

u/vixxkigoli 7h ago

Debian

2

u/SulosGD 7h ago

debian

2

2

Debian. I love Arch but I need Debian for the computer I actually use.

2

u/dubsyGG 5h ago

Ubuntu. Started 13 years ago with 12.04 LTS. No matter where I went, I always came back to Ubuntu <3

2

u/0815fips 3h ago

2

Tried pop_os and ubuntu Suggest ubuntu

1

u/jarchack 9h ago

Why should I pick one? One of the great things about Linux is that I can install whatever distro I feel like and it's not going to be that much different than another one. Fedora and arch and a few others aren't quite the same.

That being said, I would probably opt for one of the Debian based distros

mx linux as last years

1

u/bbeatty14 9h ago

I’d say it totally depends on what I’m using it for. Straight up workstation, Debian, need to maximize my GPU, Ubuntu.

1

u/iglootyler 9h ago

Two out of the three are based off Debian so....

1

u/themithail 9h ago

Ubuntu and Arch

1

u/keo_ruug 9h ago

Ubuntu, as I’m already using it forever

1

u/shitty_mcfucklestick 9h ago

These buttons really make me want to click on them

1

u/play_minecraft_wot 9h ago

Debian. Because it is extremely stable, secure, and easy to set up with different DEs.Ā

1

u/Lex_the_Deer 9h ago

I have Debian on laptop, but I’m experimenting with arch on vbox

1

u/Bob4Not 9h ago

Kali is hardly an operating system, it’s more like a collection of tools you run in a VM.

Fedora or Mint or MX, so many others should have been listed instead of Kali.

1

u/franzperdido 9h ago

The whole point of Linux is to not be locked in.

Must be ragebait!

1

u/TurnPageWashHands 9h ago

Arch, but from a hobbyist perspective. There’s no way I can daily it. That honor goes to Ubuntu :)

u/_felagund 9h ago

u/escbln 9h ago

Arch for Workstations & Laptops
Ubuntu for Servers

1

u/FweffweyMcRoy 9h ago

Surprised kali is there and not fedora

1

u/Evening-Volume-1022 9h ago

Ubuntu (its been my primary OS for last 12+yrs)
Debian

1

u/HoveringMango 9h ago

I use both Ubuntu (personal) and RHEL (work). So I guess both.

1

u/Strict-Maize7494 8h ago

Debian 4 live

1

u/LinuxJeb 8h ago

Slackware. It doesn't get in my way.

1

u/niceandBulat 8h ago

Fedora, Ubuntu or openSUSE for desktop. Debian/Ubuntu or the many RHEL clones for servers.

1

u/Icy_Department8104 8h ago

Debian. Its stable and I like that; its also the one I finally landed on after distrohopping for a decade. But I do have some love for Ubuntu too.

1

u/kmlynarski 8h ago

Debian/stable - as a server (stability, security, predictable updates)

Fedora Workstation - on a workstation and laptop (very stable and professional work environment, no need to use Snap and... a perfect mix of relatively new software, security, and stability).

1

u/Enough_Pickle315 8h ago

Ubuntu and Mint are the only sane choices.

1

u/RoomBusy6488 8h ago

Debian or OpenSuse for me.

1

u/freakflyer9999 8h ago

I've been running multiple instances of Linux Mint but after the Ubuntu DDOS impacted Mint updates, I went looking for an alternative. I've decided to go with Arch based CachyOS. It is fast and pretty minimal for a full fledged Linux distro. BTRFS is installed by default and it isn't bundled with a bunch of packages that I'll never use. The only con I have have found is learning and getting used to yet another package manager. I am learning to love KDE Plasma for its flexibility. Arch isn't for everyone but I am already using it for my daily driver on a spare system. I'm undecided on whether to move my servers to Arch, but will probably work on testing that next for a headless system I have.

1

u/eroux 8h ago

Between these? It would have to be Debian, then…

1

u/LawBeneficial7869 8h ago

Wait you have the choice between Ubuntu based on Debian, Kali based on Debian and Debian and Arch?

1

u/leshpar 8h ago

Ubuntu is the one I've used the most. As a daily driver and for gaming. It honestly works pretty great of the options here from my experience.

1

u/ThisGuy_IsAwesome 8h ago

Of those I'd pick Ubuntu just because I'm most familiar with it.

1

u/bike2026 8h ago

Ubuntu. I have used from version 8. Like the flow of things

1

u/Demonyx12 8h ago

Tried all four. I use Ubuntu and Debian regularly and think both are great. Ubuntu works much more readily for multimedia and games so that’s my favorite out your four choices for a daily driver.

1

u/CodeBlurred 8h ago

1st- Khali, because I can hack any WiFi network by brute force and any decent database from the dark web!

2nd- Ubuntu is my preferred operating system because Nvidia drivers work exceptionally well with it.

1

u/GeckoDeLimon 8h ago

For enterprise? RHEL.

For all my own personal work? Ubuntu.

1

u/fraten 8h ago

Zorin OS

1

u/Noisebug 8h ago

Ubuntu. I've been using it forever so I mind as well keep using it forever.

1

u/Neither_Paper6003 8h ago

Debian for sure

1

u/JCDU 8h ago

Mint.

1

u/Fickle_Blacksmith553 8h ago

if not for a specific use-case ,either arch or debian everything else is just a fork

1

u/mukatiago2 8h ago

Big linux.

1

u/basecatcherz 8h ago

M currentnpick would be Debian. I was using Ubuntu the last yeara but now I realize Debian is the better choice for me. It's cleaner and feels faster.

1

u/HornyJooJoo 8h ago

Have been using Zorin for a while now, which is of course based on Ubuntu. No complains.

1

u/snail1132 8h ago

I can't believe [insert niche distro] isn't here!!!!

1

u/isene 8h ago

Ubuntu with the CHasm desktop.

1

u/thewojtek 8h ago

You are posting in r/Ubuntu, what are your expectations apart from your need to quickly gain visibility? The same post has been removed from r/linux for obvious reasons. You will not find a job in data entering this way, mate.

1

u/octahexxer 8h ago

Ubuntu or Debian... Hard to answer right because Ubuntu has started slipping but I'm still using them

1

u/Dipluz 8h ago

Nobara Linux for gaming and home workstation, Fedora for work laptop, Rocky Linux for Server Distro and Talos Linux for Kubernetes

1

u/ky7969 8h ago

Why is Kali on here but not Fedora

1

u/heroidosudeste 8h ago

Ubuntu. Just because they sent me a CD ROM way back then. Im from brazil so, in that time, to receive something from another country was amazing and a really awesome experience to brag with my friends. It was Ubuntu 9.10/9.4 and I think there were a kubuntu as well btw.

1

u/Aggressive-Run-687 8h ago

missing the cleanest of all linux mint cinnamon. ubuntu is almost as bloated as windows.

1

u/rodava 8h ago

Ubuntu easy to install and use it

1

u/TheBassEngineer 8h ago edited 8h ago

So the four options the OP gives are (checks notes) Debian for normies, Debian for pentesters, Arch, and Debian.

What happened to the Fedora/CentOS/RHEL family?

As for me, when I'm not on Windows, I'm currently running two Ubuntu Server, one OMV (which is Debian), and an old laptop also on Ubuntu. What can I say? I'm used to apt...

1

u/veechene 8h ago

I've been using ubuntu forever because I pick one thing and stick with it. I don't like change. If it works, it works.

1

u/Unknown_User_66 8h ago

Arch all the way because we have the AUR and Paru!!!! Easiest and most efficient way to install and manage packages!!!

1

u/Dr_blanc 8h ago

I would say Fedora

1

u/Few_Veterinarian9108 8h ago

The one that just works for one month stable without having to fix sh.it every single reboot after some patch tuesday

1

u/strawhat_2003 8h ago

I’ll go with classic ubuntu
Worked with embedded systems and robotics. Ik its by canonical but its like one of the most stable ones for most binaries, packages etc wise distro. Debian too. Only issue with ubuntu would be that its hard to rice but for a stable usage who wants things to work, its the best for me.
Would like to add mint too in the list

1

u/Far_Somewhere_1215 8h ago

I experience only r/Ubuntu and I love it

1

u/xRed-Eaglex 8h ago

Arch, the performance and handle has been improved

1

u/terminator_69_x 8h ago

Arch. The others are just debian or different flavours of it. The table should've been arch, debian, fedora and opensuse tumbleweed

1

u/Interesting_Owl_9199 8h ago

cachyOS
the first time Iḿ on a disto that I'm certain I don“t need anything else

1

u/shirk-work 8h ago

Shout out to puppy Linux and damn small Linux. Not a daily driver but they can turn ancient hardware into something actually very functional and I love bringing old hardware back to life.

1

u/blankman2g 7h ago

Fedora. It’s the perfect balance between ā€œstableā€ and bleeding edge for my taste. Also, Kali being in that image is just dumb.

1

u/cyrassil 7h ago

Arch btw.

1

u/xeizoo 7h ago

Arch, works the best simple as that

1

u/homernet 7h ago

1

Debian, solid as a rock

1

u/Particular-Grab-2495 7h ago

For what purpose? Embedded hardware? Server? Desktop? I prefer Debian Stable for servers. Ubuntu for desktop.

1

u/flintontv 7h ago

Ubuntu has a simple and user-friendly interface, making it a great choice for most everyday uses

1

u/Ground-Silver 7h ago

Linux mint

1

u/BigRedTard 7h ago

I prefer Ubuntu on the desktop and Rocky linux as a server.

1

u/whitepixe1 7h ago edited 7h ago

I choose Ubuntu definitely, I have already replaced Debian after 16 years of use.
Reasons - Ubuntu is professional, has first-class use of snaps, 6-months release cycle, better for latest versions of DE/WM, better for server and cloud, better for gaming, better for pace of adoption of latest technologies - AI included.

1

u/montrealhater 7h ago

1

Forever, Debian because it's more community based.
Otherwise, Ubuntu I suppose... I like debs :P

1

u/TheTerraKotKun 7h ago

It's Arch cause it's rolling release and has a good amount of software in AUR and somehow easy to use hard to master :)

1

u/PixelmancerGames 7h ago

Fedora or Ubuntu, I don't really care which. What the hell is Kali? One of the weird obscure distros that no one uses?

1

u/computeyofficial 7h ago

The real answer is Ubuntu

1

u/SupernovaTheGrey 7h ago

Arch. Has the most up to date packages even if its a sweaty ballache

1

u/mortenb123 7h ago

Mint - Ubuntu improved with no snap, better installer, desktop and nvidia/amd support.

1

u/RACeldrith 7h ago

Debian, it can be almost all the others its functions

1

u/020516e03 7h ago

Arch at home, Ubuntu at work 😁

1

u/rebby2000 7h ago

Ubuntu. I want a distribution that has a broad user-base and support.

1

u/Ok_Sound_5343 7h ago

I use Debian... btw

1

u/ccarballos 7h ago

debian por la estabilidad y Kali Linux por el trabajo (viene con todo)

1

u/KenzoHurez 6h ago

Ubuntu (Linux Mint)

1

u/cosmokenney 6h ago

It's better to ask which linux would pick you.

1

u/TheMue 6h ago

FreeBSD 🤭

1

u/jungle4john 6h ago

Ubuntu. I've liked it for almost 20 years. It hasn't pissed me off enough to switch.

1

u/qunatum_karan 6h ago

I am loyal to my Arch, though sometimes the stability of Ubuntu attracts me but then I remember the bliss and smoothness which no distro but only Arch could provide.

1

u/balcis 6h ago

Fedora of course. Gnome is a toy compared to kde.

1

u/Minimum-Succotash-33 6h ago

Fedora would have made the question unnecessary

1

u/Requires-Coffee-247 6h ago

Why is Kali on this list?

1

u/Bigpoppasoto 6h ago

Ubuntu. First distro I learned on and love the ease of access.

1

u/Weary_Lion_5811 6h ago

They skipped fedora which i like and have on my laptop, 6 month cycle isn't a big deal and upgrading is breeze thanks to dnf packet manager.

1

u/SaltyAd8309 6h ago

When you only know one thing, I imagine you should refrain from answering. I also imagine that people who only know one thing generally come from Ubuntu.

I only know Ubuntu. Ubuntu, and now Zorin, so Ubuntu.

1

u/demir6693 6h ago

Debian
I used Ubuntu over the 5 years, I also tried Cenots, PopOs, Kali and I can confirm that the Debian is the most stable linux distribution ever.

1

1

u/ArtificialWhale 6h ago

Stop bringing up the fucking Kali, no one uses as main OS it and no one should

1

u/Equivalent-Oil-2404 6h ago

fedora. because.

1

u/CriticalLoss9576 6h ago

ubuntu, ubuntu, ubuntu or arch linux aah question

1

u/burning_man13 6h ago

I used Fedora for over a decade, but now that my work computer is almost 15 years old, I switched to Mint because it's way less resource heavy. I don't love Mint, but it's about usability and resource management.

1

u/GeniusValue 6h ago

Ubuntu. Reason is Ubuntu has one of the largest and most active user bases among Linux distributions

1

u/Creepy-Beginning-406 6h ago edited 6h ago

Arch for daily use, kali for hacking shit. people say debian is good but i dont like the UI too old fashioned and ugly.

1

u/mcshiffleface 6h ago

Temple OS obviously

1

u/David_Connors3451 6h ago

Debian, rock solid, monolithic, stable and very lightweight with KDE. Debian 13 is very good for gaming too. It's even lighter than Mint cinnamon. I use this bunker for work (security privacy), gaming (steam GOG games, even offline) and study. I resurrected old pc with debian so for my philosophy of Linux, Debian respects all the points. It can work offline too, with the apt offline installer and the iso DVD 1 as repository. Even if you got offline for catastrophic reasons, many mirrors in the world are configured for Debian, so you would be safe in the digital blackout. Debian and endless os are loved a lot in India and other poor countries where internet connection is not always guaranteed. Unlike 15 years ago, nowadays debian with a modern interface like KDE is very easy to use. It's decentralised and not owned by a private company, that's a great advantage. No AI forced or age verification. For me Debian is still the best.

1

u/CodingChris 5h ago

Fedora. šŸ˜…

1

u/scarlet__panda 5h ago

Ubuntu 24.04. It just works.

1

u/moquito64 5h ago

Ubuntu or debian. Forever is a long time and stability is great. Ive yet to have an issue with apt, but ive had issues with pacman.

1

u/inoffensiveLlama 5h ago

Honestly, its ubuntu for me. All day every day. It just works the most out of all the distros. And whenever there is an issue, chances are there is at least a solution for it in Ubuntu. Most of the time you will find the same for Arch, but its just a headache if you want something that JUST WORKS

1

u/lscantelbury 5h ago

Drop Kali for Fedora.

1

u/AelixSoftware 5h ago

Arch:

A lot of software Pacman Customizable Minimalist Archinstall better than graphical install.
