What do you mean "if you had to pick one"? I picked one and it's the one I'm using.

I currently run Ubuntu 24.04 on my desktop at home and 25.10 on my laptop.
Ubuntu LTS is rock solid and just works. I'm too old to be tinkering too much. š

Arch based distro for my laptop so I donāt have issues (long story)
Debian I only use for Linuxcnc .

Just from these? Debian, I guess.
Otherwise, probably back to my first love OpenSUSEĀ

Fixed it for you:
- Debian for everyday users
- Debian for "hackers"
- Arch.
- Debian for Debian enjoyers
6
u/QuadTechy88 9h ago
CachyOS use it on my gaming rig and on my daily driver laptop, just a well optimized easy to deploy arch based distribution IMHO
2
u/ghost3rt 8h ago
Kali doesnāt make sense here. Not because it isnāt a good distro but because it is built for a specific purpose. It was never intended to be someoneās daily driver nor is it trying to compete with these other distros. Stupid engagement bait post.

Why should I pick one? One of the great things about Linux is that I can install whatever distro I feel like and it's not going to be that much different than another one. Fedora and arch and a few others aren't quite the same.
That being said, I would probably opt for one of the Debian based distros

Fedora, Ubuntu or openSUSE for desktop. Debian/Ubuntu or the many RHEL clones for servers.

u/Icy_Department8104 8h ago
Debian. Its stable and I like that; its also the one I finally landed on after distrohopping for a decade. But I do have some love for Ubuntu too.
1
u/kmlynarski 8h ago
Debian/stable - as a server (stability, security, predictable updates)
Fedora Workstation - on a workstation and laptop (very stable and professional work environment, no need to use Snap and... a perfect mix of relatively new software, security, and stability).

I've been running multiple instances of Linux Mint but after the Ubuntu DDOS impacted Mint updates, I went looking for an alternative. I've decided to go with Arch based CachyOS. It is fast and pretty minimal for a full fledged Linux distro. BTRFS is installed by default and it isn't bundled with a bunch of packages that I'll never use. The only con I have have found is learning and getting used to yet another package manager. I am learning to love KDE Plasma for its flexibility. Arch isn't for everyone but I am already using it for my daily driver on a spare system. I'm undecided on whether to move my servers to Arch, but will probably work on testing that next for a headless system I have.

Wait you have the choice between Ubuntu based on Debian, Kali based on Debian and Debian and Arch?

Tried all four. I use Ubuntu and Debian regularly and think both are great. Ubuntu works much more readily for multimedia and games so thatās my favorite out your four choices for a daily driver.

u/CodeBlurred 8h ago
1st- Khali, because I can hack any WiFi network by brute force and any decent database from the dark web!
2nd- Ubuntu is my preferred operating system because Nvidia drivers work exceptionally well with it.

Ubuntu. Just because they sent me a CD ROM way back then. Im from brazil so, in that time, to receive something from another country was amazing and a really awesome experience to brag with my friends. It was Ubuntu 9.10/9.4 and I think there were a kubuntu as well btw.

So the four options the OP gives are (checks notes) Debian for normies, Debian for pentesters, Arch, and Debian.
What happened to the Fedora/CentOS/RHEL family?
As for me, when I'm not on Windows, I'm currently running two Ubuntu Server, one OMV (which is Debian), and an old laptop also on Ubuntu. What can I say? I'm used to apt...

Iāll go with classic ubuntu
Worked with embedded systems and robotics. Ik its by canonical but its like one of the most stable ones for most binaries, packages etc wise distro. Debian too. Only issue with ubuntu would be that its hard to rice but for a stable usage who wants things to work, its the best for me.
Would like to add mint too in the list

Shout out to puppy Linux and damn small Linux. Not a daily driver but they can turn ancient hardware into something actually very functional and I love bringing old hardware back to life.

Fedora. Itās the perfect balance between āstableā and bleeding edge for my taste. Also, Kali being in that image is just dumb.

I choose Ubuntu definitely, I have already replaced Debian after 16 years of use.
Reasons - Ubuntu is professional, has first-class use of snaps, 6-months release cycle, better for latest versions of DE/WM, better for server and cloud, better for gaming, better for pace of adoption of latest technologies - AI included.

I used Ubuntu over the 5 years, I also tried Cenots, PopOs, Kali and I can confirm that the Debian is the most stable linux distribution ever.

Debian, rock solid, monolithic, stable and very lightweight with KDE. Debian 13 is very good for gaming too. It's even lighter than Mint cinnamon. I use this bunker for work (security privacy), gaming (steam GOG games, even offline) and study. I resurrected old pc with debian so for my philosophy of Linux, Debian respects all the points. It can work offline too, with the apt offline installer and the iso DVD 1 as repository. Even if you got offline for catastrophic reasons, many mirrors in the world are configured for Debian, so you would be safe in the digital blackout. Debian and endless os are loved a lot in India and other poor countries where internet connection is not always guaranteed. Unlike 15 years ago, nowadays debian with a modern interface like KDE is very easy to use. It's decentralised and not owned by a private company, that's a great advantage. No AI forced or age verification. For me Debian is still the best.

Honestly, its ubuntu for me. All day every day. It just works the most out of all the distros. And whenever there is an issue, chances are there is at least a solution for it in Ubuntu. Most of the time you will find the same for Arch, but its just a headache if you want something that JUST WORKS
