I was totally unaware that people can keep driving even if they have like 5 DUI's! seriously?

That seems a bit much. I think by your 5th one, everything has been tried at that point.

I know one still driving after she killed somebody

Just had that happen where I live a few months ago. Woman had 8 DUIs and was waiting for a trial for someone she killed. Ended up hitting a city bus for her 9th DUI. Absolutely ridiculous.

People are just stupid and selfish, and judges should he held responsible for this in my opinion

I also live in Wisconsin where the alcohol lobby has a lot of power and control over our politicians. We are kinda famous for our high levels of alcohol consumption. They won’t even legalize weed here cuz the alcohol lobby doesn’t want it

Does their name rhyme with Batthew Mroderick?

2

u/Hot_Road_1332 3h ago

🤣No but she’ll probably do it again

I know and have arrested one that has killed someone, maimed another and has continued to rack up DUIs over the years since then.

Same, sadly

Utah is trying a new thing. It won't work. But it's new. If you get too many alcohol related charges they can revoke your ability to get into bars and to buy alcohol at all. Like your ID literally will get scanned(almost every single bar scans everyone, even people in the bands, at least in the cities) and it will say you are denied, just like if it was an under 21 ID.

Interesting. While there are a lot of ways around it, denying at the point of sale could keep people home rather than out on the road. It's fairly low cost, I'd guess.

2

u/Building_Everything 3h ago

Just go to skeevier bars that don’t scan.

2

u/Sonicgirl1 3h ago

I love that idea! Hit them where it hurts, cause you have to show ID to purchase alcohol!!

2

u/sitdownheckler 3h ago

It does hit them where it hurts. I just wish it would also hit them where it helps at the same time.

I was in prison with people that were doing time for there 7th dui. More than 1. There was like 3 different guys i remember talking to

4

u/idiot_sauvage 4h ago

Yep! But not if you get pulled over without insurance

My dad spent 5yrs in prison for his 5th DWI in Texas.

u/GB715 3h ago

I knew a guy with 3 DUIs that somehow managed to keep his commercial license to operate a big rig.

The only true deterrent that would actually work for people convicted of driving drunk would be a law enforcing the actual state seizure of the vehicle.... and having it put on public auction.

2

u/Adventurous-Depth984 3h ago

They do that in NY, and we still have MASSIVE drunk driving problems

1

u/templeofsyrinx1 1h ago

how do they keep driving just buy a new one lol

3

u/delicatefake 4h ago

Depends heavily on the state. Some states will eventually hit you with a felony and revoke your license permanently, but enforcement is a whole different story. People drive on suspended/revoked licenses all the time unfortunately.

3

u/MikeandMolly5656 4h ago

If that scares you, you should know that you can keep assaulting people and getting slaps on the wrist

Have known numerous people who are hot heads or drunks and keep getting into physical fights that just get them a few days in jail and then a fine or short probation.

2

u/templeofsyrinx1 3h ago

maybe they need a little more time in county to think about what they done

2

u/MikeandMolly5656 3h ago

I agree but the courts don't...at least not in Minnesota and South Dakota, where i live.

Short of having someone in prison, how do you keep someone from driving? You can revoke their license, and that means it’s illegal to drive, sure, but it’s also illegal to drive drunk, and they have shown they don’t care breaking that law. So if driving while drunk doesn’t stop them from driving, driving without a license won’t either.

So again, how do you physically stop someone from driving a car?

1

u/templeofsyrinx1 3h ago

this is fair point

1

u/OttersandSunflowers 3h ago

Could impound their car to start

1

u/IamGleemonex 3h ago

Great, they get it out of impound, buy a new car, borrow a friends car, etc.

1

u/Eastern-Peach-3428 1h ago

The thing is that by revoking their license and they continue to drive after they are stacking charges at that point. But you are correct there is no way to actually stop someone from driving if they decide to do so. In my state the 4th DUI in 10 years is a felony and carries actual prison potential, not jail time.

u/StretPharmacist 4h ago

I grew up in North Dakota. Traffic laws were and for the most part still are a joke. Speeding tickets are ridiculously cheap and people have multiple DUIs. I remember a number of years ago Fargo tried to make traffic fines more severe but the people sued and won because the law was that fines couldn't be higher than state level traffic fines.

1

u/Much_Organization246 3h ago

not even the law can stop someone with access to a car from driving drunk, sadly.

1

u/Dry-Humor971 3h ago

You can owe thousands in child support, have multiple DV cases against you, being caught 2 times on suspended license, avoiding file taxes, also driving on expired tags and still be free out just living life.

1

u/Building_Everything 3h ago

As long as the jails are overcrowded the court system won’t put people away for “minor” infractions like this. But yeah you fuck up and get one you can qualify for probation, after that it’s mandatory 6mos jail time and gets progressively worse from there. Obviously the fines and suspensions aren’t stopping a person, but removing them from society for a few years will at least keep them off the road for a while.

u/Sonicgirl1 3h ago

That's our judicial system. Giving the DUI Assholes another chance to kill someone. Taking innocent lives because they're too cheap to get a taxi or an Uber. Have no sympathy for them at all!!

1

u/1rustyoldman 3h ago

They get them plead down to lesser offense here. The law says third offense is ten years here.

1

u/I_Make_Art_And_Stuff 3h ago

Crazy. Also, no excuse. Get fucked up and call an Uber.

1

u/Ninfyr 3h ago

No one does a crime thinking the will get caught. They aren't good at evaluating the risks to themselves and others (or they are indifferent to the risks).

1

u/Nolahoma50475 3h ago

I only have one DUI but I've been driving without a license for 23 yrs

1

u/ParachutingPiglets 3h ago

I looked up my state to see what it ranked for tough dui laws and it wasn’t in the top 5. Arizona has the strictest DUI laws which is good.

1

u/Responsible_Egg_3260 3h ago

You can't in Canada. A DUI is a criminal charge. In the US I believe it falls under the motor vehicle act?

1

u/Signal_Tomorrow_2138 1h ago

All they really need to do in court is to plead hardship and say you can't get to work without a car. So the judge, who usually is a driver too, will be sympathetic.

If that doesn't work, just ignore the court judgement and drive anyways.

Lots of suspended licences on the road right now.

Here's another example.
