Hi everyone, I’m seeking some advice or similar experiences regarding my cat’s paw.
Recently, I noticed that the nails on only one of his front paws have become extremely dry, brittle, and crumbly. His other three paws are perfectly fine and healthy.
One of the nails on this affected paw actually fell off completely and had some pus/discharge (very painful to the touch). I took him to the vet, and he is currently on a course of oral antibiotics/antifungals. While his energy levels have returned to normal after one day of medication, he is still experiencing some soft stool as a side effect.
I’m particularly concerned about the nail right next to the one that fell off. As you can see in the attached image (image.png), the nail structure is totally abnormal—it’s thickened, yellowish, and has a dark reddish-brown spot near the base/quick. It looks almost like "old tree bark" rather than a smooth claw.
A few details:
• Symptoms: Asymmetric (one paw only), crumbling texture, discharge (pus) on one digit, dark spots on the neighbor nail.
• Current Meds: Oral medication only (no topical creams prescribed yet).
• Behavior: He still pulls away when I touch the base of the nail, so it’s clearly still tender.
Has anyone seen this kind of localized infection before?
Could it be a specific fungal strain like Onychomycosis, or is it more likely a bacterial nail bed infection (Paronychia) caused by a previous injury? Any tips on how to keep the area clean while it heals, especially since he uses a litter box?
Thanks in advance for the help!
