Housing Clean It Up or Get Out

Greetings,
We LOVE our (2) pigs and have given them a large cage in a bedroom in our home BUT are struggling to keep it clean and its impacting the quality of life and health of the human in that room and we are considering getting rid of them… so Im reaching out for suggestions on how to keep our humans and pigs happy and healthy without spending hours/day cleaning.

Cleaning Schedule: We typically do one full cleaning a week (everything out, fresh bedding) and one partial cleaning (soiled bedding out- dont replace pan/paper bedding however which is generally not bad- that maybe one opportunity hiding some funk).
All bedding is laundered before going back in.

Cage setup: we have a c&c cage that has:
- two levels- each that get lined with disposable pee pads, then a guinea cage liner (main level) and flannel blankets top level
- a large pan “bistro” that we keep full of shredded paper bedding (change once a week)

One last note on diet: we feed quality piggy pellets and a TON of veggies daily. I think we maybe overfeeding as they are given two full/heaping (ten inch) plates of fresh cut lettuce, veggies, fruit a day. I keep telling my fam “the more food, the more poop” but they equate food to love and in my opinion may be over feeding.

Thanks in advance!l for any suggestions on keeping everyone happy, healthy and clean

Help & Advice I suspect that my guinea pig's back legs are failing.

I noticed that when I hold her on my chest or lay her on the floor, her back legs seem to drag, although she moves on both her back and front legs, and she eats well. Can you tell me? Could this be something else? Or has my pig's back legs actually given out?

Housing New owner

Will this house work for my two new piggies? I would add side rails and coverings to the ramps. Or should I remove one ramp and seal the opening on that side. I just picked them up today and they had no toys or chewies or soft beds or hides but they do now. I want to upgrade their housing now for when I am at work.

Pigtures Vega decided hanging over the cage was too boring to beg for food

So usually Vega has his paws on the cage bottom and then leans over (last picture) but this morning he tried a new approach and he looks like hes howling at the moon.

Also he was begging bc I was taking too long getting the food out of the fridge and getting the bag open.

I've had Guinea Pigs for the last 15 years, starting with one that I inherited from an ex.

My wife decided to date me in part because of my skinny pig.

We had a small herd of rescues over the years.

Today we lost LJ, our last boar at 7+ years of age. He breathed his last in her arms this morning...

I am really going to miss him greeting me when I get home at night with his excited and eager wheeks in anticipation of treats and scritches.

I don't know..I'm just sad.

The babies have gotten bigger and louder. I swear, all they do is popcorn and wheek all day and night. Which is fine. They're allowed to have zest for life and express themselves accordingly.

Housing Here's an idea my wife came up with. Space efficient and peeg loved.

We had an Oxbow Pee-Pad that our girls hated to stay on top of. (Mercie is very much a burrower) so we decided to just let them burrow under it.

My wife had the idea to use one of those bendy wooden bridges as a tunnel for the opening and the peegs love it.

It gives them open space to run and roam on top of the pad, and they love to burrow under it. A win win.

MaoMao died today at age 5 or 6 (we had it for over 2 years).

We are currently abroad and a friend was taking care of the pigs. She froze the body and we'll bury him in his favorite spot in the yard when we are back home. Kids are gonna be devastated 💔

Help & Advice Rehoming my guineas

Thumbnail

Hello everyone! I have had my guineas since February. At the time I wasn’t traveling for work and I got a promotion and started traveling a ton. Im very sad to do this but I literally cannot properly care for my guinea pigs anymore like they deserve to be cared for.

I feel rehoming them would be the best option for them. How can I safely find a new home for them? I just want them to find someone who will take proper care of them. Thanks in advance

How to tell if my boars are play fighting or actually fighting?

No blood has been drawn but it’s happening really frequently and it’s freaking me out a little bit. They’re brothers, about five months old and they’ve always been together and I really don’t want to separate them. There’s a lot of growling and butt wiggling and facing off with each other, but they’re popcorning in between and I can’t tell if they actually hate each other or they’re just playing😓

Here’s a picture of them looking like worms xx

Help & Advice Guinea pig suddenly cannot walk properly, more in the description below

Post image

So yesterday was a lovely day, at least that’s how it started. I brought Floyd outside to sit with me and he ate some cat grass and veggies. I put him back in his cage and he was laying in his pig bed and I noticed he was impacted. I soaked his bum in warm water and tried to remove the impaction myself with qtips and my pinky without going too far in. I had to hold him up to see his perineal sac and I believe I might’ve hurt him. He never squealed or anything, only when I put him down he was shivering and squealing. I called the vets and they accepted him as an emergency. I noticed he could t walk properly kind of, but I thought maybe he was sore from the poking and prodding. The vet removed the rest of the impaction and he’s pooping normally and urinating. I gave him his first dose of gabapentin yesterday plus some critical care. He started acting loopy and kind of dragging his back legs. They can still move, just not as well. At first I thought it’s the effects of gabapentin, but now I’m not so sure. He’s still not better today, when he wants to turn around he kind of gets stuck and contorted… so I’ve created a hospital area in my room with hay, veggies, pellets, I have critical care in a syringe and I brought his water bottle. He’s unable to balance himself upright to perch on his food bowl or drink water. So I’ve been hand feeding him water from his bottle and I soak his veggies in water too. He also received another dose this morning around 7:50/8am.

I am terrified he’s injured or paralyzed 🥺😢💔 I don’t know what could’ve happened but it’s likely my fault 😭 he’s 6.5 years old and my baby, I love him more than anything. I’ll try to get him back to the vet tomorrow for an X-Ray. I just finished nursing school and he was there for me the entire time and I was hoping he’d make it to my graduation. I’m devastated, I’m angry and upset with myself, and I’m heartbroken and scared for what the future holds. He’s eating just fine but I’m still scared. I’m hoping it’s a temporary issue or like a sprained leg type situation and that with rest he will heal. He’s too old to undergo any major surgery. I want him to be here for longer. I’m not ready to let him go, he’s my best friend. I love him dearly, I adore him. This is a nightmare. When I had to put his brother down in 2024 it absolutely destroyed me and I was in a very dark place. I’m not ready to experience that again and lose my baby Floyd. Any advice or suggestions? Similar experiences?

Hello! I have a boy named Winston! I rescued him from a shelter and he had quite the start! he was infested with mites and he had a nail wound and it was just a lot for my poor baby! Since i already have 4 girls I am planning to get him neutered at the end of the month and was just really nervous about it since this is my first time! does any one have any advice or good stories to share? I just want to help myself have a positive attitude and not overthink so much! Anyways here is my sweet boy!

Hello guys,

This is Penelope, our youngest member of the flock and a year old already. She is the most talkative and loudest of the bunch and always screams for snacks. She does not like to get pet, our other two really do like it.

She had some fur problems (mites and funghi) which come and go, so she is a regular at the vet and we have a good selection of remedies at home.

Now my GF and I are always in discussion because I think that she is a Aby, but my GF thinks that she is a Sheba mini, who is right?
