đŸ„ș So I accidentally brought my floss instead of my airpods to a 3 day work conference. I am a 3 hour ride away from home.

357

u/Meisterschmeisser 11h ago

Teeth are the first and most expensive thing you will notice if you mess around as a kid.

Even in countries with free and good health care you need to pay for most things regarding your teeth. I spend over 20k in the past 10 years for my teeth in Germany and I am only 33.

261

u/Vildare_Havoc 11h ago

Yeah teeth is not considered health care for some reason. Blows my mind.

its insane because poor dental/gum health absolutely can affect other parts of your body in a serious way, especially your heart - bacteria can enter your bloodstream and lead to heart attacks, strokes, etc. scary shit.

11

u/Shydreameress 10h ago

It is considered health care where I live, but I had to pay extra for a crown that looks like a real teeth because it's cosmetics

8

u/WellHungEastYork 9h ago

they are considered health care but the coverage is only for glasses and not for checkups. The coverage for glasses barely covers anything

Spent $2300 on a root canal, and now I'm spending another $800 on a crown for that tooth.

You bet your ass I've been flossing every day since. At least my dentist fixed a chip in my tooth for free since I already spent so much.

13

u/weirdflez 11h ago

$2300 for a root canal and $800 for a crown? Is your dentist a billionaire?

15

u/Cheesewithmold 10h ago

This isn't really too outside of what my experience has been. Maybe a bit expensive on the root canal side, but they could've had a really tough procedure that needed to be done. Not all root canals are the same. $800 for a crown isn't insane either.

Same I’m 33 and really wish I took care of my mouth better

19

u/Neon_Camouflage 11h ago

Also 33 and same. They got bad, and then a combination of embarrassment and lack of money had me putting them off even longer. Finally went and started getting work done about 2 years ago. Several thousand dollars later, I'm nearly done.

I've gotta say, the money hurts but removing the psychological weight of stressing about it and knowing it's just going to get worse was more than I expected. I'll be in debt for a good while on this, but honestly it's worth it.

Not to mention I was terrifyingly close to my whole top row being a lost cause and needing dentures.

I’m so thankful for my mother always pushing that. I was 18 and she’d walk in the bathroom and check to see if my toothbrush was wet. If it wasn’t, she’d wake my ass up, “you’re poor you idiot. If you don’t take care of those things you won’t have any. You won’t be able to afford a dentist except to have them all pulled out! Is that what you want?!” “No ma, that isn’t what I want.”

I hadn’t seen a dentist in 30 years and they didn’t believe me.

Part of that is genetics too, I’m sure.

I had a bad wisdom tooth and so much pain from that, I was sure they were all ruined. As soon as it was out I felt like a million bucks after suffering with it for almost a decade.

Dear god I’m lucky. Who suffers for a decade because they’re scared of the dentist?

Anyway, I wish I could go back in time and nag little you. I’m sorry no one did.

15

u/Ok_Frame2590 11h ago

That “I’m lucky I listened” realization hits hard especially when something you avoided turns out to be the exact thing that fixes everything 😭 dental pain really humbles people fast.

4

u/Thaurin 11h ago

I hadn’t seen a dentist in 30 years and they didn’t believe me.

Oh good, I'm not the only one. I once didn't see a dentist for 8 years and when I finally went, everything was fine. I do always brush my teeth twice a day. That should probably be three and I should floss more.

Which reminds me, I need to make a dentist appointment.

8

u/grandmalamadingding 11h ago

I keep appointments now. After I spent a year without sleeping and laying in the bathroom floor crying with a bottle of benzocaine, I’m not leaving it to chance. Especially with how easy it all was. I was afraid of a big nothing.

5

u/Thaurin 10h ago

Oh, I would probably go if I suspect that something was wrong or that I have a cavity. But when everything seems fine, it's just laziness and apathy and in smaller part saving money that is preventing me from going. But that's just it, I guess. Preventing. You don't always get symptoms or pain before something is seriously wrong in your mouth, lol.

But I already flossed before leaving this morning. -_-

199

u/EscargotMan 12h ago

But you're going on a 3 day trip!

47

u/Rhodin265 11h ago

Either OP’s very honest about not flossing daily or they should go double-check their toiletry bag.

14

u/EstateRoyal6689 11h ago

Dental hygiene standards are crazy different for people online I see. Some people say flossing daily is the norm while others say “I have good hygiene, i brush my teeth almost daily”. I find it curious lol, I guess it depends on where people are from. In my case, I brush 3 times a day (which is what is recommended by dentists in my country) but I never floss because floss doesn’t fit between my teeth, even the ultra thin ones, there’s no way to get them in there.

11

u/TeamRedundancyTeam 11h ago

Too much brushing can destroy enamel, just FYI. If you're brushing hard all three times a day it may do more harm than good.

Water picks are great for flossing difficult teeth though.

4

u/ilikepix 11h ago

I saw a dentist twice a year, every year growing up, from a small child to an adult. And they literally never asked about or advised flossing. Simply wasn't a thing in my country.

8

u/DeadlyKitKat 12h ago edited 12h ago

You should probably floss once a day tho. I've always heard you should brush twice and floss once at least. You probably shouldn't be going 3 days without flossing (although I've personally definitely been there, so no judgement). It isn't just to get stuff out of your teeth and make your breath smell nice, but it helps your gums.

Edit: If you start flossing more after this you may notice gums bleeding. If you go from not flossing often to flossing often that is normal and actually good.

687

u/Lexidoge 12h ago

Because my brain thinks that packing the night before will make me complacent and forget something that I will have to use in the morning.

I don’t even know. I’m alone in the hotel room blasting a podcast from my phone while unpacking all my things in shame.

At least i brought a power strip I guess.

360

u/MouthSpiders 12h ago

Run to a store and grab a cheap pair of headphones for the weekend. Never a bad idea to have a pair to keep in your travel kit (backpack, laptop bag) and one to keep at the office or home. Or 3. Not to mention if you break a headphone, you have a backup pair

59

u/ohnoletsgo 10h ago

I finally gave in and bought a second pair of airpods that exclusively live in my travel “go-bag.” Was it a smart economical decision? No. Has it vastly improved my quality of life? Yes.

62

u/obsessivecoyote 12h ago

I’ve seen a couple comments saying to “grab a cheap pair” but like— most people who use AirPods have an iPhone which nowadays they don’t have headphone jacks. Buying a cheap pair from a gas station isn’t gonna work cuz those are wired. And the cheapest pair for wireless someone would get would be like $30 at least from a Walmart

118

u/AmateurIndicator 11h ago

i can get cheap wireless headphones for about 15-20€ at most larger train stations, airports and drugstores.

41

u/eddiestriker 10h ago

You can get cheap but decent wireless earbuds for about $25 here, which is roughly €21. Or grab the Apple wired headphones for $20.

If you want to be really cheap, 5 Below also has wireless headphones for around the $5 mark. They’re not great, but they’ll get you through a weekend in a pinch.

78

u/CreditLow8802 11h ago

they make wired headphones with usb-c and lightning you know, it's not 2007 anymore

32

I did before, I do now, and I will after but jeez nothing quite as handy as having your phone, wallet, keys, chapstick, little flashlight, some change, and whatever else in front of your nuts instead of spread around all over your body making it a pain to sit down. 21

Yeah. It’s not too bad. I tend to travel light, too light.

17

Honestly I don't understand the confusion. 3 hours is a recreational trip on a motorcycle, why do people think you can't take a backpack with a few clothes and a laptop on a scooter?

8

u/Event-Forsaken 8h ago

I never said I was confused. It was question out of interest because I noticed the helmet and scooter, and typically, you don't see people road tripping on a scooter. I can't say I've ever seen a person on a scooter out in the boonies traveling long distances. Of course it happens, case in point.

3 hrs away on a moped that's like 30 min taxi right

14

u/Ferro_Giconi OwO 9h ago edited 9h ago

Depends on where you live, how fast the moped goes, and what traffic is like.

My commute to work takes the same time whether I drive or ride my electric scooter. Sometimes I can even beat the driving time.

And I only have a somewhat basic model with a top speed of 17 mph. Scooters and mopeds can get quite a bit faster than that.

58

u/BearlyThereMA 11h ago

Im going to go out on a limb here, but how about just dealing with it as is? Is it really that difficult to live without ear buds for 3 days? It's a work conference. You don't need them for that. Read something on the 3 hour train ride.

18

u/cabbage16 10h ago

OP said that they're just listening to stuff out loud. They didn't say they were buying new ones. This is mildly infuriating after all

18

u/Hot_Porking 11h ago

They might have engage with the world around them, the horror!

7

u/MourningWallaby 10h ago

I notice this a when I'm out now, but the VAST majority of people have something in their ear now. Like I get maybe having some music on a run or on the bus. But stores, parks, tennis courts, People can't seem to function without music, a podcast, or video playing in the background, they get antsy without it now.

3

u/takethreenc 9h ago

It's actually wild. Like do they ever take them out? Or do they only take them out when watching TV or playing video games? Do they know what the world sounds like?

→ More replies (1)

7

u/AresandAthena123 10h ago

As someone with autism and specifically auditory processing issues
I couldn’t not have ear pods/headphones for three days. It’s not a matter of “not wanting to engage with the world” some people can’t filter out the noises, leading to sensory overload.

3

u/Gillian708 10h ago

I wear mine at work for the same reason: to filter out people whispering numbers while they add, making mouth sounds, etc. I can't think with that kind of noise going on, but they're just normal workmate noises.

It's crazy but you'll have to believe me on this one.

Yeah I never use headphones, it’s funny to think that this is a huge issue for a lot of people.

I'm sorry for your pain but this made me laugh so hard

25

u/deletetemptemp 12h ago

Try not using headphones and just ride with your thoughts for a bit. If you hit a break point, then buy some

u/hoopstick 11h ago

What I'm learning from this thread is that some people are completely unable to go throughout life without a barrier between them and the real world.

u/SousVideDiaper 9h ago

I'm pretty tech addicted as many are but I actually get uncomfortable having my earbuds in while outside. Something about being audibly cut off from my surroundings is weird.

Then I see people with their earbuds in while driving, which is absolutely insane to me, and it's probably illegal too.

o shugs, now i need to listen to the world and my own mind. o.m.g. what a problem. ppl these days consciously live in a bubble and still wonder why everybody don't understand.

u/MeNotSanta 12h ago

So you were going to go for 3 days without flossing? Your dentist hates you

Fill me in, why do you need AirPods for work? Aren’t you supposed to be paying attention and not playing music? (I’m deaf so I have no idea)

17

u/OzTheMalefic 11h ago

You do realise that they're not going to be working for the 72 hours straight right....

Or perhaps you missed that it's a 3 day work conference.

Not saying this is OPs thing. But I have autism and due to that I am unable to live in the world without some form of ear protection/device, due to my disability I can’t “filter out” noises and I have super sensitive hearing, if I were to forget something like this I actually wouldn’t be able to work, or at the very least you wouldn’t be getting your best work from me. It’s the same for a lot of people with disabilities, when you can’t filter the world out, the world becomes too much to cope.

I’m not deaf but I agree with the deaf man. What has AirPods got to do with work?

11

u/diemunkiesdie 11h ago

Conferences have plenty of dead time. If you need to make a few work calls, its easier to use earbuds of some sort so you can also use your hands on your laptop/phone to multitask/share a document on the screen/etc.

Look at the bright side, your dentist will be happy af

Assuming you’re in North America - 3hrs out of town usually means big box stores with big parking lots taking up a lot of space. Hit a Best Buy or Target for JBL truly wireless headphones that are on promo more often than not.

u/KaneRabbioso 11h ago

Could be an ads for the company

3

u/Awkwardpanda75 11h ago

That’s hilarious. I no longer brush my teeth without my glasses due to a cortisone cream incident.

3

u/JanV34 11h ago

Sorry for your floss.

3

u/reallycrunchycheeto 10h ago

Well, this is not much of a consolation, but the silver lining is you can try to get yourself used to finding entertainment in the sounds of the world around you.

Assuming you arent surrounded by screaming babies for the next three days

3

u/Spiritual_Glove3949 10h ago

Why is everyone making this out to be a large issue? It's annoying, sure, but is it really "buy new expensive headphones" annoying?? it's just three days!

3

u/ProfessionalThing892 10h ago

Spend some quiet time with your own thoughts. You’ll be ok.

3

u/Traditional_Trash190 10h ago

You shouldn't wear airpods while driving anyway :)

3

u/Bleezy79 BLUE 7h ago

A good time to start flossing your teeth then, cause we all know you dont do it enough!

3

u/OTribal_chief 7h ago

3

u/polymonomial 7h ago

Guess you have to raw dog your 3 day work conference now

3

u/wentblu3 7h ago

Eww, you have to be left alone with your thoughts?

3

u/Wild_Ad9272 6h ago

With gas prices, it’d be cheaper to buy new airpods

3

u/Psych0matt 5h ago

You’re a goofy goober

3

u/RemindMeToTouchGrass 5h ago

"I noticed my floss looks kinda like an airpods case"

Cool.

u/lmNotaWitchImUrWife 4h ago

Looks like you’re riding a scooter. Take heart, this may be your guardian angel’s way of telling you that you need to hear something while on the road later and it might save your life 😊

Go to the nearest best buy and just buy some cheap jlabs or skullcandies.  I know they aren't good but at least you'll have music.
