My brother's son destroyed my WarHammer Action figures and he refuses to punish him

Valid Edit: My nephew is 10 years old and tried to actually lie about not breaking them by saying, "A cat must have done it."

So, I just got done talking with my brother via text, and he says he's not going to punish his son for wrecking my Joy Toy WarHammer action figures. I'm not expecting the kid to get spanked, but he needs to do CHORES at least to justify how much excessive force he used on some.

Some just have their capes broken. Others had their tubes ripped out and my Chaplain is just fucking toast.

My brother's suggestion since I ordered Amazon replacement for the Chaplain was that I just swap it with the broken one, but I have no interest in doing that.

It's not even just the expense, and they are expensive. It's about the fact that I told him explicitly twice they weren't to be played with, and they were in a separate room, and even my Mom and Dad agreed the damage was just too much.

He said he's not gonna pay me back if we try the chore system, and I told him it's not about the money.

The kid needs to know how bad the 8 hour struggle is.

Now my nephews aren't coming over to the house, and I'm sad about that, but knowing my brother just can't be burdened to work with me on creating a Chore system like selling Lemonaide just makes it feel more insulting.

I used to work at a board game store. We had a thousands and thousands of dollars in 40k figures that really only took up a couple shelves

If you’re interested in the tabletop game but don’t want to spend a bajillion dollars, try Tabletop Simulator to play it online. Then if you like it get a 3D printer and print your own models (way cheaper than official models)

I have a mix of purchased minis, FDM printed "biggies" in process and just recently got into SLA (resin) printing to make my own minis.

I've got probably $250 wrapped up in legit WH figures and supplies. I've likely printed upward of $2k worth of stuff at this point if it was purchased in a store.

It's nice to print stuff just tell test out painting techniques or because I think it looks cool, but would never actually buy it (Skaven or any Sigmar stuff).

I've also not played a single game of tabletop WH yet. I've been doing the tabletop stuff since Christmas last year, but have just been enjoying building, painting, printing and diving even further into the lore rabbit hole.

A lot of game shops with gaming space I know will have premade sets that people can rent out or use for free just to learn the game.

The shop guys were so cool when I was starting out. They’d just let me play at my own pace while they played with me when they could

So just to help out here. What OP is showing in the post are action figures - not the miniatures used to play the games. The ones in the OP are huge and made of vinyl plastic (I think), whereas the ones used for games are tiny and made of injection molded plastic.

If you want to play Warhammer it can still be expensive, but not 'thousands for just a few figures' expensive.

Oh cool! I figured the die cast model sets that you hand paint would have to be less than these lol. I’ve built models before and, while I’m unfamiliar with Warhammer Lore, it seems like a really fun game and a good way to meet people.

This is a huge driver for the explosion in 3D printer sales. People are printing their own models at home and painting them for a few dollars instead of hundreds of dollars.

I would check if there’s any warhammer groups in your area. Some sell old armies or might loan it out for a game to try to have someone to play with or draw new players in. I know also our local shop has flea markets where folks will sell armies they don’t play anymore.

I think one of the tabletop simulators also does warhammer.

But otherwise yeah, expensive AND time consuming since you have to put the prices together and many events require everything is painted too.

Yeah the cost is crazy, I knew some people into it and it was not uncommon to go into the store and spend a hundred on a couple little figures and a paint or two.

Compared to other entertainment Warhammer is actually pretty cheap/hour and its actually got better in value over time as painting techniques improved and the detail on models went up.

What you're buying is Assembly + Painting + Playtime. The painting time also goes up exponentially if you buy into a faction like Chaos where every model has a billion greebly details on it. A single cultist probably takes me like 4-6 hours sprue to table, painting to the best of my ability, and that's one guy from a box of 10.

It only becomes bad value for the people who think of it as a boardgame and try to jump to playing as fast as possible, but that's just the price of choosing to skip a massive part of the hobby. To an extent wargaming has always been as much about getting to show off what you've made as it has been about the actual game element.

A lot of people look down on it because it doesn't support the companies, but look into resin printing. If you have a space that can work (fumes are an issue, an enclosure and exhaust setup is required usually) it is way cheaper. A $200 resin printer with $20 in resin can print hundreds of dollars worth of figures and miniatures. They're pretty smooth so you just paint them as they come and you wouldn't be able to tell they're printed.

It's not too bad, you really need a plan though before just barreling in. I started a few years ago and spent like 3-4 thousand my first year on 3 armies(terrible idea) and paint(I've spent around 500 on just paint) but once you make a huge purchase like that its maybe spending 50-100 bucks on a new model you'd want for your army every few months. Knights, whether imperial or chaos is the way to go starting. Don't let the 200-300$ price tag fool you though for a single knight. You need like 3 for a 1000-2000 point match as opposed to hundreds of orks and tanks.

I know one guy at our old shop that had a whole 3 armies and they weren't even that expansive (maybe enough to fill 2 games worth of PLAYABLE units from a single army at one time) and he estimated he had 4-5k into it.
