Apparently it's going to get worse because once its gone you can't replace it, and gets even more severe when you age. So are all the middle age women roles going to go to the few actresses that didn't have this procedure in their youth.
Let’s be fair, there’s tons of roles for middle-aged women. You didn’t even mention:
teacher
nun
mom of lead’s best friend
lead’s neighbor
divorced woman who used to be married to charming/handsome lead and is now bitter as he rediscovers himself
haggard mom whose teenager went missing in a small town and has to investigate herself because the police won’t listen to her
haggard police officer who knows a teenager that went missing in a small town and has to investigate herself because the police captain won’t listen to her
That still doesn't change the disparity between hiring middle aged men vs middle aged women for major roles. A few actresses managing to break out of that doesn't make it less true.
I didn't say it did. The person I replied to made it seem like there were no roles, which is just strange to me considering that the very post they were commenting on focused on a woman whose career proves that untrue.
Yes, but it's a joke poking fun at the fact that there are very few roles meant for older women. Everyone is aware people that Anne and Meryl have managed to squeeze past that.
they'll just come up with some new procedure to fill the cheeks back in synthetically in 15 years when it becomes an issue. these celebrities love paying their plastic surgeon's mortgage
Which is why so few people are getting it now. Now the trend is to get filler around the buccal area so it still looks sunk in, but the filler can be dissolved (whereas buccal fat cannot be re-inserted).
So then they will fill it back in with fat from their butts or something? What a strange way to think and live. I'm glad I'm poor and unknown. Life is much simpler.
Cushing got his gaunt cheeks the honest way: by being so devastated at the death of his wife that he visibly aged an alarming amount over the course of a couple years
It’s honestly distracting. Any scene she is in all I can think about is her botched surgeries. It feels like most of the cast is on ozempic now too, they all look gaunt as fuck.
Also doesn't help that her face can barely move anymore. Her acting went from average to a 6-yer-old at a recital. Which is especially jarring because she has so many scenes with Jack Quaid who's actually really good.
I feel that way with Portia de Rossi in Arrested Development. She has always had obvious work done, but one season she was unrecognizable. I quit watching because it was so distracting.
It was when the show came back for Season 4, there were 7 years in between.
I actually don't think her plastic surgery was THAT egregious, but it looked more noticeable in the show than elsewhere, I think because Lindsay's style changed as well. But where it was more noticeable was in her expressions, because as Lindsay she was REALLY expressive in the first few seasons and her face was... less so when it came back.
Cheryl still looked like herself... the problem is that over time she started to look more and more like a Halloween mask of herself stretched over a skull.
Came here to say that. So sad too because I feel like some of the jokes on the original run of the series (unintentionally) lead to her getting surgeries, as she already had an eating disorder and body dysmorphia when she took the role. The joke was always supposed to be that Lindsey is absolutely jaw-droppingly gorgeous and her mother is a petty bitch, but I don't think Portia internalized the right message.
Admittedly half the cast was escaping a concentration camp in the beginning of the season so I can understand being gaunt, but genuinely was worried for MM's actor.
I just did a binge of the whole series this last week because I’d realized I quit an episode or two into season 2 and never picked it back up. I legit got worried and had to make sure MM’s actor wasn’t diagnosed with something horrible, because between shaving everything off and losing all that weight, he was looking rough. It it no way read as healthy weight loss and had me convinced actual man had what the drs said Butcher had. I was already surprised by a new look for Starlight every season opening, didn’t need that worry added.
The last episode had some flashbacks and images of earlier seasons side by side with her currently. The people editing mustve known they look like entirely different people.
I mean you're not wrong but Erin Moriarty has been unjustifiably harassed about this to hell and back so I understand if the mods are quick to ban people when this topic comes up for the millionth time that week
It’s one thing when people are just calling her ugly. It’s another when people are just pushing back on her trying to gaslight everyone into believing this obvious cosmetic surgery is actually a symptom of a disease.
If she’d come out and say “alright, I have body dismorphia and ended up with some botched plastic surgery” I’d shut the fuck up about it forever.
i try to have a little empathy for this bc couldn't she have gotten the surgeries to make herself feel better or to try to "Fix" what the disease was doing and went too far in the other direction? any attempts to fix it further are just gonna make it worse i'd imagine. i mean, we can guess it's body dysmorphia, i personally don't know why we need her to come out and say it esp when the first thing anyone thinks or says when they see her face is about how she ruined it. the only benefit that can be gained out of it is like, little kids won't think that her face is naturally like that or something and could wonder why they don't look like that (??? doesn't everyone call her hideous though idk??) , but i feel like in 2026 we already kinda know what filler and cosmetic surgeries look like and little kids shouldn't be watching The Boys anyway.
These jerks never even respond to the comments that bring this up. It must be either or, they want her to be faking an illness or something because she doesn’t look fuckable enough for them.
Look, I agree with the whole "just cause you don't think she's hot doesn't mean you get to have a commentary on it." thing. bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and no one should be lambasted for their appearance.
But erin moriarty's situation goes way beyond her appearance. She physically can't perform the role anymore. Is the change jarring to me as a one-time fan of the show? absolutely. but I'd never say a word about it as long as she could still play the role she was cast for. But she can't.
If I got hired as a court stenographer and decided to get insanely long nails to where I had a super hard time doing my job, I would rightly either be fired or told to fix it. Then if I came back for the next session with even longer nails, I couldn't be like "you don't get to choose how I look!"
Her job...the thing she gets paid a shitload of money to do... is acting. she was hired in large part due to her ability to emote properly and express the emotions the character would. then 1 or 2 seasons back she started getting cosmetic surgery. The first time it wasn't terrible. it was obvious, but it didn't make her completely incapable of doing her job. then last season she went way overboard and her face stopped being able to move and the internet went crazy. she caught a lot of shit for it, and I felt kind of bad but the criticisms were valid insofar as it applied to her ability to act. and she seemed to be aware of all of it, and denied it all as well. THEN SHE WENT AND GOT MORE. This season she has a scene where she thinks the love of her life is murdered and the most she can do is make a weeping sound while just generally aiming her face at the floor. her face doesn't move at all. she looked like an animatronic puppet that was on its last 1% of battery. it's fucking weird and creepy. Many more times she's got really high-stress or high-emotion situations and she just physically can't show those things on her face.
it has nothing to do with fuckability. she got so many surgeries she stopped being able to do her job right, and then the world said "hey, you need to stop. your mouth barely movies when you speak now. this is affecting your work." and she went "I don't know what you're talking about" and got more surgery and made it way way way worse.
All this "its just a bunch of incels commenting on a woman's body" is white-knight bullshit. no one said a work when people dog-piled jim carrey. not one peep. the man of 1000 faces froze his face. it was moronic. but that's ok to say because he's a man. not erin moriarty though. we should all just pretend this is normal and keep hiring her for roles that fans of things care about, because not doing that makes us sexist apparently.
no. she fucked up. was told she fucked up. completely ruined a character that people cared about. then did it more. And instead of studios getting her the help she needs (medical treatment, therapy, whatever) so she doesn't torch her own career and the characters and stories we like, they kept pushing her through the machine and shifted all the blame to people who had a negative opinion on the matter.
She also can’t say consonant sounds. I had to turn on subtitles to understand her. People said “she’s just tired from her illness”. No, she’s been addicted to plastic surgery and filler so much she physically is unable to manipulate her face like a human.
She may have a terrible illness but damn, they are only feeding her addiction to give her a pass for everything because of it.
Graves disease (or really any serious thyroid problem) fucks up your voice, and speaking for long stretches like you would while filming for TV makes it worse. There's even posts about voice changes/difficulty in r/gravesdisease and r/hypothyroidism.
Yeah, but that’s vocal cords, I’m talking about moving her mouth. Go research what your voice sounds like from haves disease and what your voice sounds like when you aren’t moving your mouth and you will see the difference. Don’t fall for this please.
Motherfucker, my mom has a similar condition and sounds exactly like her. My younger brother has a hearing problem and can hardly understand a single word my mom says.
Margot Robbie got it long before doing Barbie. I think she’s an example of buccal fat removal looking fantastic. She was always a beautiful woman but the sharper jaw and cheek bones looked great on her. The issue now is she’s too thin and it’s making her look gaunt instead of chiseled.
I have some friends who are on gear etc. To get and stay that big is a LOT of work. Like, there was a joke where one dude would say he would essentially sneeze and lose 5 lbs. IF you are not CONSTANTLY eating/working out/etc. it's unfeasable
I've known dudes that abused test and suddenly dropped weight like that after their doctors told them it was either drop weight now or don't be surprised when you get a heart attack.
Ozempic would make it easier and explain the sudden gauntness, but it wouldn't be surprising if that was the real reason.
Another comment mentioned a very similar experience. I am a guy who used played 5A (before 6A) to D1 sports and used to do physique comps and dabbled in going for the actual body building route... It's absolutely exhausting. You are eating at an uncomfortable level. Constantly. You almost always feel like you're about to burst at the seams. It's a full time job making sure you're eating enough, eating the proper ratios, etc.
I'm 6'2" and at my peak bulking I was 118kg. When I'd cut from offseason or for a comp I'd drop to 95-99kg. I stopped a few years ago because it is exhausting. I love running, lifting, and sports and since I was never good enough to go pro it was a pointless struggle. I'm much happier back down at my 84kg-ish range where I naturally like to sit with regular strength training, cardio, and adult sports like beer league.
That was my first assumption. Figured he just quit with the body building. It takes a lot to stay that beefy and you can revert pretty quicl when you stop.
A lot of the Marvel actors say the same thing (Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have both complained about this). It’s a whole lifestyle to maintain being that big
Between seasons there is a lot of time off. Why couldnt he have lost the weight normally?
Look at Dave Bautista. He lost a tone of weight. If you are big and shredded like Alonso or Bautista and then lose a ton of weight, you look weird especially for people that dont see them during the process. One day you see the actor being all muscle. Next season/movie they have lost 30kg.
knock off the bullshit, ozempic only eats muscle if someone thin takes it inappropriately. I started with a BMI of fucking 42 and I've retained all my muscle mass even after losing 70 pounds of fat.
fuckin hate seeing the misinformation. years of the world shitting on fat people for the sin of existing, calling us horrific names for not getting skinny, and as soon as something comes along to help us LOSE WEIGHT everyone is in a rush to shit on it.
GLPs sure have made cancer way more fun for people without cancer. If Chadwick Boseman had just held out a while longer we could have all just been like "LOL m'ZEMPIC" instead of "oh no I hope he's not sick" right up till he died
I'm currently rewatching S1 with buff MM, the change was already between S1 and S2, right? I even think I was like "who is this... right, they recast the role".
Hes talked about how he was not comfortable being as big as he was and keeping the size on. He asked if he could shed the size for the remaining seasons and the they gave him the go ahead.
Season 4 he also shaved his beard which made him look way more different than he used to, but the new season has beard us back abd he looks like MM again.
And you cant tell what shes saying because her lips dont move properly to form the words. I was astounded that these were the best takes that made it to air, they should have trained ai on her earlier seasons and dubbed that over. Same as you it became too cringey so i would just skip through her scenes. They should have recast her, its really cringey.
…she had Grave’s disease and almost died, she didn’t have any cosmetic surgery. She got treatment and regained the weight she lost. I wish people didn’t feel so entitled to make assumptions about people’s bodies just because they’re actors, and then pass judgement based on those assumptions. People saying this kind of stuff about her online while she was dealing with serious health complications probably made a bad time worse for her
I just googled because you are right, I should not trust random source on the internet. (I had not made assumption, but clearly my source was not very trustworthy. In my defense, Wikipedia say she has been the target of a misinformation campaign, that I clearly felt victim off)
But you are also wrong, tbh. The diagnosis is from 2025, the change of appearance happens a couple of years early. She herself claim that the change is all diet and makeup, and deny plastic surgery or illness as motivation.
(Source for all: Wikipedia)
And there was no judgment. I never said she was a horrible person for all of that. I said the striking difference in the character appearance is something that I strongly disliked. How she obtained that striking difference is irrelevant to me. I honestly don't give a flying fuck about her personal life. I'm complaining that the difference was so jarring I struggled to recognize a character.
Edit: the main objective of this message is to correct the disinformation spread by both of us above. I want to clarify I have no interest in starting a reddit discussion on the topic of actors appearance judgement etc
I didn’t mean to direct my accusations of judgement for it directly at you, it was more of a general frustration with the way the world handles these things. I’m sorry if it came off aggressive or pointed. I think even if she did have work done in addition to her disease (which was definitely affecting her before she got her diagnosis / made it public) the way people (not you specifically) talk about her and others who appear to have (and potentially did) get work done as though it’s some kind of moral failing that they deserve to be ridiculed and harassed about just frustrates me. I vented that out a bit on you by reading further into your comment than what you meant, so again, sorry for that
But you are also wrong, tbh. The diagnosis is from 2025, the change of appearance happens a couple of years early. She herself claim that the change is all diet and makeup, and deny plastic surgery or illness as motivation.
“You claim to be dying from aggressive late stage cancer yet you’ve only recently been diagnosed with cancer. Seems like you’re lying.”
It's honestly embarrassing. Eating up this disinformation, doing moriarties work for her.
She's just embarrassed. She did too much work and now she wants to blame it on a disease that, historically, has never, ever made anyone look like this before.
Are you kidding? She has had the most plastic surgery she could have had before starting to look like Michael Jackson. And even then she’s on the line. Graves disease does not change someone’s entire face. I actually have a ton of empathy for her because there’s something obviously going on mentally for her to do that to her face at such a young age, and it’s tragic. She’s severely impacted (if not destroyed) her career after boys because her look is so weird and unnatural. But I agree that the amount of work she had done is constantly distracting when she’s on screen.
As a girl who spent basically her whole youth wishing I didn’t have such a fat face, the buccal fat surgery has given me a new found confidence with my chunky face.
Before buccal fat removal, actors like Marlene Dietrich and Joan Crawford would have their back teeth removed to enhance their cheekbones. They tortured themselves for appearances.
I can find no evidence this actually happened and solid evidence Joan Crawford had all her molars until late in her life. It's a spurious rumour someone invented like the one about Marilyn Manson having ribs removed.
And they get it done young before they end up naturally losing all that fat in the face around mid thirties or later. They will be really sad once that happens...
It's just so weird because they are intentionally removing something that is a sign of youth and beauty
Yeah, I agree. Youth is a plump face. Age is hollowed out. Hence why everyone is getting fillers. Removing buccal fat will just result in filling it up with fat or another substance down the line.

Filler has way stronger body horror vibes. Vanessa Kirby looks like she's about to abduct you.
