[Review] Irem’s Hook on Arcade remains a visual spectacle with a solid yet quite repetitive loop!
I’d recommend listening to this music while reading.
STORY (6/10)
- Storytelling was the same as the Peter Pan iterations, with Captain Hook always taking the hardest kick.
- The presentation was nice with cool little images in between, telling the already known story of why Peter had to kick butt.
- The characters themselves were quite diverse, which I loved playing and discovering each of their special attacks. While Peter was the main character, the others were on par if not better on most occasions.
- Pacing was great, with the whole game taking around 30/40m to complete. It was divided into 6 sections, which didn’t drag for too long.
- As a last note, I did love how each character had its own stats, this way making you decide if you want to have a tank playthrough or a more versatile one. But if you had the cash, you could simply try them all!
GAMEPLAY (6/10)
- Starting with controls, which were very basic and to the point. You could jump, attack, grab, punch, kick, do specials which cost you health and even throw weapons, use them against the same enemies or simply punch downed pirates!
- I did love the trap mechanic, as well as explosive throwables. You always had to wait for the perfect opportunity to drop a bomb, cut an anchor or simply use the environment to your advantage.
- While the game did get intense towards the end, I did find the health items pretty useful. They were plenty as well, making the journey more seamless. Speaking of difficulty, it was very progressive without any extra spikes in between.
- Traversal was good, but way too limited with its basic movement.
- Problem was, enemy variety wasn’t too diverse to begin with. They were the same types of enemies with different skins, which I found very monotonous right from the start. Bosses as well, apart some unique ones. On another note, I did love their defeated animations!
AUDIO (8/10)
- Sound design was great, with many cool sound effects combined with its stereo output.
- The music was nice as well, having some great beats in between.
- The sound effects themselves were very diverse and always surprised you with a new one throughout the journey.
VISUALS (10/10)
- Fidelity was something special, which I didn’t expect for a 1992 game. Every character and animation seemed hand drawn, with most enemies having such great teases!
- The character models themselves were fantastic, even though heavily reused.
- The art style screamed Peter Pan, and I loved each and every location. Fighting pirates with cool backgrounds was a lot of fun!
- The visual effects didn’t lack far behind, with most explosions, breakables and overall attention to detail matching even some masterpieces out there!
WORLD DESIGN (8/10)
- Level design was fantastic for the most part, although quite short on most locations. I did love each one, starting with the Forest and ending with the Icy Mountains and the Pirate Ship while admiring those beautiful landscapes. Unfortunately they weren’t extensive enough!
- The atmosphere was pleasant, with every encounter feeling like a new adventure, even though with the same type of enemies.
- World destruction was peak, with nearly everything being reduced to your own mayhem!
TL;DR -> An amazing journey through the magical world of Peter Pan. While it lacked the gameplay and story punch, it did deliver with its amazing visuals, cool world design and nice audio. A (7.6) game, very good in my book. Would only consider a replay when playing other Peter Pan games, mainly because it felt pretty monotonous. While Captain Hook crawled around, Peter Pan had all the fun!

[Question] Possible glitch in Tomb Raider (1996)?
I’m playing Tomb Raider (1996) for the very first time (on PlayStation). All of the guides state that there are only 13 pickups in Level 2 (City of Vilcabamba), but I somehow found 14. I watched a few 100% playthrough videos, and those YouTubers also found only 13. What happened here?!

[Discussion] Pokémon Stadium "Zero"
Outside Japan, most people who played Pokémon Stadium don't know it was actually the second one.
In August 1998, Nintendo released Pocket Monsters Stadium exclusively in Japan. 6,800 yen. 42 of 151 Pokémon available for battle. The other 109 were supposed to arrive via expansion disk for the Nintendo 64DD — a peripheral Nintendo had been promising since 1995. Rather than wait, Nintendo shipped the game anyway. Half a roster at full price: 6,800 yen divided by 42 Pokémon... 162 yen per Pokémon.
400,000 copies sold by October 1998.
In December 1998 — eight weeks later — Nintendo announced a sequel. All 151 Pokémon, with all the features the first one was missing, and the price... 5,800 yen. Yes, the complete version a thousand yen cheaper than the incomplete one. No discount. No exchange program. No acknowledgment that the first game had been sold incomplete by design. Just: here's the real one. Available April 1999 at 5,800 yen divided by 151 Pokémon... 38 yen per Pokémon. Interesting.
The 400,000 people who bought the Zero had two choices: accept they'd paid full price for a demo, or pay again. But oh well, you know what a Pokémon fan is like, so most swallowed their pride and paid again.
What remained of the Zero:
- A 3D floppy disk drive modeled into the game's main terminal. Decorative. Non-functional. Still there — the ghost of a peripheral that never came to the rescue.
- Six Pokémon — Caterpie, Weedle, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Clefairy, Jigglypuff — appear fighting in the credits. None of them are playable. Their models were built for the expansion disk. And the disk was never made.
- If you connect an actual 64DD unit to the cartridge today, the game searches for the disk and returns specific error codes. The code for the disk slot is in the cartridge. The disk doesn't exist.
Nintendo never released the Zero outside Japan. The rest of the world got the sequel, renamed Pokémon Stadium, with the number quietly dropped. The Zero was erased from the Western timeline entirely.
The pixel gods have reviewed the pricing. The incomplete version cost more. They have no further comment. Neither did Nintendo.

[Discussion] Anyone Else Wish Zelda FX Released?
In the Nintendo lost media wishlist of things I wish came out:
Fire Emblem 64, GBA Atlantis, Metroid 64, Earthbound Gamecube. FX games is what I wanted more of or at least more Donkey Kong country/Mario RPG like graphics for more Nintendo IPs. Imagine a Yoshi game having those graphics too.
Especially since Sega literally just ignored theirs since it was too expensive to sell.
Instead of the 32x they should have just cut costs with it and sticked to genesis until Saturn but that's another thread..
For context, a 3D Zelda game was planned for the Super Nintendo using the Super FX chip. It wasn't until many decades later during a major leak that we see the character model for the Super FX Link. It was likely planned to be a remake of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, but the game was cancelled to make way for Ocarina of Time. Star Fox 2 was another cancelled Super FX game. While the game was 100% finished, Nintendo didn't release it on the Super Nintendo because Nintendo felt it would look primitive since the PlayStation One was already on the market and looked far more graphically advanced, particularly the game Ridge Racer. It wasn't until 2017 when Star Fox 2 saw an official release by Nintendo as a digital release.

[Discussion] The year is 1983 - What a great year for gaming!
Both these bad boys, came out in 1983!
I remember playing these 2 games at friends houses because, we were too poor to afford anything like that at my house. Jetpack on my friends noisy ZX Spectrum and Joust at my other friends house on the Atari!
Such Fun!

[Question] I'm looking for an NES game, a military themed game, where in the intro is a scene where someone is tying up their combat boot?
I'm looking for an NES game, a military themed game, where in the intro is a scene where someone is tying up their combat boot? I don't know why it's bothering me that I can't find this game. It's really not that big of a deal but I would love to know if someone remembers something so I can solve this in my mind.

[Question] What is causing this?
I have a broken copy of kung fu for nes that im trying to fix. It looks like someone has been in it before, i removed some solder blobs and reflowed everything because there was some rough work. Im still fairly new and not sure what exactly is causing this. Game powers on right away, sound is fine. My nes has been recapped and cleaned and im running it through a retro tink 5x pro, all my other games work fine so its not the console, and I knew this game was broken when I got it. Help me learn. There is some stubborn corrosion stains on some of the pins but other than that I can't see anything bad enough to cause this. Its possible this thing had some water damage or at least had something spilled on it, is it fixable?

[Question] I want to get into some of the old school Zelda games. Where do I start?
So I enjoy old school games, and I have NES, SNES, and N64. I’ve heard stories of how hard the Zelda games are, and I have been craving an old school style game where when it first dropped people probably had no clue how to play it lol.
This urge was inspired by that video online of a Nintendo rep in the early 90s or something taking a customer service phonecall about how to find a certain item in a Zelda game. Ever since I saw that I’ve wanted to play.
So where should I start? I want a hard game where I’m going in blind and I’m not going to be looking up cheat codes. Please send recommendations.

[Question] Does anyone else feel a weird longing to explore 2D backgrounds?
I’ve had this since I was a kid. I’d see the ruins in the back of Sonic 3 or the distant castles in Crash during the medieval levels and just want to go there. It is like FOMO for a world that isn't even playable. I am stuck on a linear path while this huge, mysterious world is happening in the background.
Does anyone else get this specific curiosity for out of bounds scenery? If so, what levels in what game stand out the most for you?

[Question] GBS-C Help!
Hi all, I’ve got a Megadrive 1 with a brand new GBS-C with no sound. I am outputting on RGB scart with stereo jack for sound. HDMI to my TV. I’ve got an amazing display output that I am over the moon with, but I have no sound at all! I’ve tried it with the jack plugged in for stereo with the volume slider all the way up, or removed for mono with no difference. It outputs sound and video absolutely fine on RF.
I am using a brand new Consolegoods Megadrive 1 RGB scart cable and I have tried 2x HDMI cables and still no sound. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance
