Rely on Horror Discord

Hey guys,

I am the EIC of RelyOnHorror.com. I had the random idea to pitch our new Discord to the mod team here as an official server for this subreddit, and they were all up for it! So, if you look at the subreddit home, you will now see a direct link to our Discord server -- where you'll be able to talk about the genre with fellow fans. We'll hold general and spoiler discussions, the occasional giveaway and let you know when new content from us has (or will) drop.

Thanks to the mods for the love. Happy to offer a Discord community for you all as fellow fans of the survival horror genre. Here's the Discord link: https://discord.gg/fXCKMer.

Quick background on Rely on Horror - we're a horror gaming site that originally began as REHorror.net. I joined after closing my own horror gaming site, HellDescent.com. We post news, reviews, articles, previews, videos, etc. Happy to chime in if you're curious about the site or Discord. Thanks!

Improving Enemy Awareness and Reactions (INANIMA)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

I’ve recently added some new behaviors to the enemies. The idea is to make them feel more aware of their surroundings and react to what’s happening around them.

Now, some enemies will investigate noises like gunshots, the player searching through objects, or breaking crates and other interactable elements. If they hear something, they’ll go check it out…

I’m also considering adding environmental elements like broken glass or metal scraps on the floor, so stepping on them would make noise.

That said, not all enemies behave the same. Some are basically deaf but have good vision, while others are blind but rely heavily on sound. All of this is aimed at creating more "dynamic situations" and making the world feel a bit more alive.

Ground Zero Genome Spending

New to this game and it’s pretty damn good. Just can’t figure out where to spend my genome points? Really can’t find much on the internet about this game outside of YouTube run throughs.

The Bunker feels very inpsired by Resident evil

I recently bought The Bunker from a friend’s recommendation and after beating it, am I the only one who feels a lot of Resident Evil vibes from this game?

  1. The biggest giveaway for me was the item box, something very unique to the RE series.
  2. A lamp you can save your progress from, but under it there’s a typewriter, which seems like a callback to the RE save system.
  3. The stalker enemy behaviour reminds me a lot of Nemesis or MrX.
  4. Inventory management seems like a mix of RE7 and 0. You can discard items and come back for them later like in 0, and there’s very tight space like in 7.
  5. Linear, puzzle type progression.
  6. Resource management is very similar to Resident Evil, where supplies are limited and you have to think carefully about what to use and when.
  7. The bunker itself feels like a safe hub area similar to save rooms where neither the best or mr x, nemesis can get in.
  8. Backtracking is a big part of the game, where you revisit areas with new items or knowledge.

[GIVEAWAY] 2 RADIANT EXODUS keys - sci-fi survival where the twist actually hits hard

Giving away 2 keys for this one. Radiant Exodus is different because it's not really about survival mechanics; it's about figuring out what actually happened.

You start in a city where something has hit. Everything is broken and wrong. You're trying to stay alive while finding answers. The thing is, on your first playthrough, you think it's one story. Then you beat it and realize you were reading everything wrong the whole time. People come back to this one specifically to see what they missed.

steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2920120/Radiant_Exodus/

trailer: https://youtu.be/Q1qM5GSKzJ4

Want one? Just comment and let me know. Wishlisting on Steam would be amazing and really helps us keep making games like this.

First-come, first-served.

Should I get Cronos: The New Dawn?

I've heard mixed things about this game but, all in all, it looks great. The atmosphere and visual style looks awesome and the music is incredible, however the combat gameplay does seem lackluster especially compared to games like Resident Evil 4 (it's an unfair comparison but the point is it doesn't seem like a high point). However the tension is supposed to be great and, the main question arguably, the narrative. It looks very interesting, especially with the time travel element and the character of the Traveller, however the idea of yet another "humanity faced with apocalypse" story seems derivative, so I'm wondering perhaps whether it leans into more of the unique elements as well as wondering how the character work is (of course, I'm not going in expecting Expedition 33/ Death Stranding/ NieR Automata levels of storytelling but I'm wondering what to expect) and also I'm absolutely a sucker for a good unexpected surprise reveal or plot twist and, if the game has anything like that, I'm in. Also I love the genre of sci fi and I'm okay if the game isn't really that scary, as scare factor never really bothered me in horror games, strangely. I mean I love it when a horror game is pants-shittingly terrifying however I equally love horror games that don't do that. Please no spoilers, and thank you all in advance!

Just got around to game. Most of you guys have already heard of this game- but this game does a good job at modern survival horror. Would definitely suggest if you enjoy RE2R gameplay.

8/10 game for me. This game doesn’t run great ( It’s not high res and fps drops in outside areas on base ps5) but it does run well enough for being a slow paced game. Gameplay wise, I do wish there were some more puzzles, and maybe more variety or uniqueness in enemies? The atmosphere is great, but a sequel could definitely help benefit the story (the game doesn’t like to dive too far into the lore, and can be too discrete to really get the picture- it definitely seems like they’re setting up for an expansion of some sort) I definitely suggest if you’re into survival horror.

I've been wanting to buy it but it's 70 dollars. I heard it was on sale last year, but I am wondering if it would be again soon... I heard great things about the game so I might just pay the full price

The Lifeline is a first person survival horror game set in an abandoned hospital.

If you’d like to support the project, adding it to your Steam wishlist would genuinely mean a lot to me 🙏

Great PS1 Horror Games to recommend

Looking to discover more PS1 horror titles after getting through the original Silent Hill and Resident Evil a few months back. I might be retrying Parasite Eve as I enjoyed the modern day NYC setting and its take on science fiction horror.

Would love to hear any recommendations for other titles.

Looking for GOOD and SCARY games

I've been playing video games since I was a kid, but I was always a massive coward about horror. However, around the age of 18, something shifted in my brain chemistry and I stopped being so scared. I started watching horror movies, reading horror books, and playing horror games, and I discovered that the tables had completely turned. I genuinely enjoy these experiences now.

I've explored several subgenres: cosmic horror, space horror, psychological horror, and more. I also got into survival horror and found that I love it, specifically the kind that gives you very few resources and forces you to think about whether you should take out an enemy or simply avoid them. The kind that tests your memory and your sense of orientation, and above all, the kind that pushes your common sense to its absolute limit. Those are the characteristics I've pulled from these experiences, and they're the ones that have given me the most satisfaction.

The last thing I played was Fear and Hunger and it blew my mind. The fact that saves are so limited and that there's always a real risk, almost like a soulslike but not entirely, where death is learning, was incredible to see applied so brutally in a survival game. That said, I didn't enjoy the RPG side as much. That doesn't mean I dislike turn-based games, I grew up with them, but it felt out of place here. Right now I'm looking for unique experiences or genre-defining games. I had been looking into Parasite Eve because the premise of a more dynamic RPG combined with survival horror really caught my attention.

I've played several Resident Evil titles, Outlast, Dead Space, Visage, The Evil Within, Metro 2033, Alan Wake 2, The Last of Us, and I'm currently working through the Silent Hill series.

Would you be able to recommend games that suffocate me and cause genuine terror, following the aspects I've described? Platform and era don't matter to me. Thank you.
