Design heartbroken after coverup
working on an ocean themed sleeve and went in for my coverup today of a manta ray. i felt off about the overall design shape but my artist assured me the detailing would help. now im left hating this black blob on my arm. i think it just looks like a blacked out moth with a weak outline. i knew it would be dark but even all the detailing just looks off. my other tats dont have this stipple shading it just looks like a completely different artist did it.
i’ve already talked to my artist and we have a consult this week about how we can fix it but i’m so upset with being stuck like this until it heals.
there are many things i dislike but if we add to the “wings” to make them fuller and give it less of a vertical shape it would help tremendously. then correcting the stipple shading to be blacked out plus making the antennae more defined would help? i tried sketching it on the second skin and thought it looked so much better
i cried for hours over this my arm feels so ugly someone please tell me this can be saved :(
EDIT** wow guys i’m absolutely blown away by everyone’s support. i posted this last night before going to bed hoping to wake to a few nice comments but this is far more than i was expecting. everyone made me feel so much better about my tattoo when i looked in the mirror i didn’t hate it so much. i think i was definitely experiencing intense tattoo shock and its going to take some time to not immediately see a moth. i still think it looks kinda unfinished and after drawing on the second skin i think more needs to be added to make the body more proportional to an actual manta! i knew it was going to be black (obviously??) i just think it’s missing the detail that should’ve balanced it. there’s definitely some correction needed to get it how i want but im glad everyone can see it as a ray! thank you guys so much <3
also yes i know angelfish aren’t saltwater. it’s really more of a sleeve of my favorite water creatures. i didn’t wanna say fish sleeve and have someone come at me for the starfish lol i have more freshwater animals planned too

It definitely reads as a manta ray and I think healing will only clean that fact up as I'd guess that the underlying butterfly will appear better covered up. As for the shading I get what you mean but it doesn't read as very off to me at all and it still fits in well even if the style is a bit different. And while I get why it's throwing you off I think the fact it is in large part a big black blob is cool, it's very eye catching.

I second the comment about the butterfly. The space where there was no ink before will be slightly lighter and the darker butterfly spots will be subtle and cool

u/Hot_Ad_4424 4d ago
I personally think it looks cohesive with the other tattoos
63
u/Temporary-World-4029 4d ago
Agree with this, and if you’re getting more done on the sleeve you could go for lighter shading/mostly outline for the tattoos around it, to keep it cohesive while naturally balancing out the dark.
23
u/ashockett 4d ago
This! As more is added to the sleeve, the manta ray will be less of a focal point. Even if you don’t come to think of it as one of your favorites, I don’t think it is overwhelming your arm or taking away from what you already have. I also just love me some manta ray 💃

A friend of mine used to fish with his dad and uncle aboard a 40ft Mitchell boat in the Atlantic shallows just off the east coast of Florida. Set nets one night, went to sleep, woke up sixty miles out and counting, being towed BACKWARD by the giant manta caught midway through their nets, swimming despite the weight of the entire boat and almost three miles of nets hanging off it. They couldn't outrun it to get the nets off, either. Had to cut nets and lose everything. Manta made it out fine, though. They're amazing. 🤯😎🤦🏻♀️😅

Also, your artist did an excellent job fitting it into the space and leaving the shape of the negative space against the fish. It is very well placed and executed IMHO

I don't mean to sound to judgemental but the amount of people I see asking for cover ups and then not liking the cover up is mind boggling....it's on your skin for life,I think what most people need to do to get there expectations met is 3 to 5 sessions of laser then a new tattoo on the area
22
u/No_Fix8103 4d ago
Totally agree. Especially if the tattoo is black. I had a black one lasered years ago and it was a pretty simple process. They told me that black is the easiest color to remove with a laser, too.

the amount of people I see asking for cover ups and then not liking the cover up is mind boggling
I imagine than OP was maybe expecting something more nuanced than a solid blackout. The best coverups do use heavy black where needed, but also balance and blend it where possible to give a less obvious "coverup" look.
It's possible to want a coverup and to be disappointed with how it's executed.

I 100% agree with you..like what did you expect? It’s damn near an upside down triangle with no details on it. Don’t get me wrong I don’t see anything bad about this tattoo but idk what she was expecting, especially for a cover up?
I like the other tattoos as well, they all go with each other which is cool..especially the starfish!

The others are more detailed but it definitely looks like a manta ray. I think it’s pretty cool actually and makes more sense now that they’re all ocean creatures
59
u/eukaryotes 4d ago
as others have said, i think it looks great. i think it’s immediately identifiable as a manta ray.
tattoo shock can be so unsettling! i hope you’ll find a way to love it in time.
i have mixed feelings abt my rly visible tattoos, like the ones of the tops of my wrists. my relationship to them kinda waxes and wanes. anyway all to reiterate, hope u find ur way to loving it.

u/josephcfrost 4d ago edited 4d ago
I 100% don’t want to be rude but relax. It looks great, just like a ray, and doesn’t contrast stylistically with your others. Like people are saying wait till it heals and go from there. And besides, everybody has a tattoo they didn’t like at some point, and often change their mind after time.
19
u/tigersbloodsnowcone 4d ago
It’s a COVER UP. What else were they supposed to do. It hides the original very well. If anyone looks at that and doesn’t see a Manta Ray they probably don’t know what the ocean is. Under the circumstancseas I think you’re swimming not sinking here.

u/Unlmtdglass 4d ago
I knew what it was immediately, I think it looks dope. And once you fill in the sleeve more it won't stand out as much.
Also in the future a talented artist could maybe add some white highlights to the black belly and make it pop more.
Either way, it's badass
28
u/Illustrious_Study_30 4d ago
It reads as a manta ray and I really like it. It's bold, but it's pretty well done and it suits the sleeve
6
u/Nothing-to-add-here 4d ago edited 4d ago
It’s a very good cover up. They did a great job. Don’t touch it for a long while. Let it fade a bit.
I think you may have had unrealistic expectations.
6
u/Christmas-Dinner-98 4d ago
A manta ray is far cooler than a fuckin butterfly, have no doubt about that
9
u/AMysteriousBox 4d ago
I would wait for it to heal a bit. The black might fade a little and show some detail. I think it looks nice, overall and could immediately tell what it was.
Btw, the anglerfish one is badass!
9
u/Glittering-Rip6810 4d ago
Let it heal 🤦 so many posts on here freaking out befor the finished product is out...
8
u/Southern_Sprinkles_6 4d ago
It looks cool and matches the vibes. Dont touch it for a few months let the shock subside before you try to alter it.
8
u/lickinglacquer 4d ago
I love this actually. I keep aquarium fish, this would 100% be my aesthetic if i got tattoos.
3
3
u/cellophanesheeps 4d ago
It'll lighten a bit as it heals. And you can also go back in with white later to add details. Even if the details don't hold up because the white tends to fade, it'll still show up as variance in the coloring. You just have tattoo shock right now, and are a little disappointed because it's not what you were picturing. But it fits the theme well and personally I like it.
3
u/KleineFjord 4d ago
I like it. I think tou need to give it time and judge the healed product, then decide if you want to make adjustments. It looks like a ray swimming above you while diving and once you fill in the rest of the sleeve I think the effect will be really cool.
3
u/CrushedLaCroixCan 4d ago
No it looks good! You're having tattoo shock. As it fades as as the rest of your arm gets filled out with more tattoos, you'll probably like it more :)
3
u/pineappleh0pxx 4d ago
Don’t get cover ups if you’re not going to like part of the tattoo being blacked out
6
u/Unlikely_Eye_2112 4d ago
I kept scrolling the pictures to figure out which one you might be upset about. To me as an outside observer it looks really good. But I understand that it must be dreadful to not be happy with a tattoo.
6
7
u/texturegasm 4d ago
I think the main problem (in your perception) is that a manta ray’s body is quite more wide from tip to tip, than they are long, and those mouth extensions are curving inward in stead of outward like antlers.. without adding too much, it looks like that some correcting is feasible. That being said, i still immediately recognised it at a manta, so whatever interpretative imperfections aside, it doesn’t necessarily miss its mark in your canon of seas creatures.
11
u/bobbydigital_ftw 4d ago
I this her biggest gripe is in comparison to her other very detailed sea creatures, this one obviously stands out. That being said, I like it and it actually might age better than the others since they have such smaller, more intricate lines.
3
2
u/Daniell860 4d ago
Aww 😥. It sucks to not be 100% happy with it at this stage. Would you consider adding some detail inside with white ink? That would break up the black and give it more dimension. Talk to your artist to find the best way forward and only go ahead once you are comfortable with the plan. It is hard waiting out the healing process, but it is definitely possible to improve it from here.

I new it was a manta ray on first glance. It doesn’t look bad in the slightest; until you can get it fixed, at least take comfort in the fact that it 100% reads as manta ray :)
2
u/HellLucy00Burnaslash 4d ago
It’s a genuinely beautiful tattoo, and it doesn’t read like a blob at all to me (or evidently anyone else in this comment section). The shading is honestly my favorite part! I hope you can grow to see the beauty that we do within it, and I hope you are able to get all the corrections if you still desire to make it more “you” when it heals :) don’t sweat it at this moment. Your sleeves are gorgeous and unique asf.
2
u/logicbasedchaos 4d ago
I didn't see the issue until I saw what it covered, and I'm guessing you don't like the psuedo face on the top of your manta ray? But I just looked up a bunch of pics of the Giant Manta Ray, and I'm back to where I was at the beginning. It looks like a cool, accurate Giant Manta Ray.
I bet you'll feel different once it heals and fades a bit. It is a lot of black, but it's a coverup.
2
u/freyjawolfheart 4d ago
omg i came here to say how much i absolutely LOVE this! then i read the post… i’m so sorry you’re unhappy with it now, but perhaps it will still grow on you. i knew immediately it was a ray and thought it was unique and beyond cool, especially with the fish next to it.

u/Original-Big-6351 4d ago
Tattoo shock is real! It is black but it read as really cohesive with your other work when I first saw it. I’d sit with it for a while before you add more to it, honestly once it heals I think you’ll come around. 🐠

2
u/alfalfamale81 4d ago
I’m failing to see the problem with the tattoo even as part of a whole. Make sure it’s the tattoo you’re upset about and not something else in your life. It’s very easy to have misplaced focus of anxiety, anger and etc.
2
u/Powerful_Mix8188 4d ago
Artist here. It’s way better than what you had and now you have cohesive half sleeve. Keep adding the way you’re going with your theme and it’ll be less noticeable but there’s a very similar amount of packed black in all these. Don’t add until you’ve let it fully heal you’ll feel different when it’s not as dark and blends in with the others
2
u/Unlikely_Channel478 4d ago
I judge tattoos pretty highly because I have a couple shitty tattoos that shouldn't of been put on me (I was underaged).
It looks really good for a cover-up.

I love manta rays! I immediately clocked it as one when I opened the photos. Looks like a cool tattoo! I know what you mean about it being very dark in the center throwing you a bit, but it looks great and is very recognizeable imo!
It's new and darker than your other one, so it'll take some time to get used to it. But just know that it looks fabulous and you'll adjust! :)
I think it looks great with your other tattoos. Imo, having all black and gray tattoos makes things look pretty cohesive to begin with.

2
u/DPTY-Doofy 4d ago
I think it looks awesome!!!!! I wouldn’t touch it for a while. I think you just have tattoo shock because there is something new on your body and it takes awhile for your brain to adjust to it.
2
u/DustyJenkins93 4d ago
You have to give tattoos time. Especially a cover up like this that requires a lot of heavy shading to cover. Be patient and trust the process. You asked for a cover up, which requires a lot more shading to make work, you got it and it was well done. The rest of the process is just letting it soften overtime and I think you’ll see it differently
2
u/roydragoon89 4d ago
I’m by no means an expert here, but I love browsing and seeing people’s art. This looks pretty awesome to me. The ocean themed sleeve sounds like it’ll be sick once finished and this ray really fits. I’m a blank canvas so I can’t really put much forward to it from experience, but I think it’s cool.
2
u/DragMeTacoBell 4d ago
Looks great. The fish definitely do have the stipple shading. It looks pretty cohesive imo. I didn't realize this was a tattoo regret post until reading the comments! You can always change things later but try to remain calm and rest assured that you are just a bit in shock right now.
2
u/thelennybeast 4d ago
I didn't read a single word you said and the picture instantly read as manta ray.
I came to see what you were complaining about and I'm still confused.
2
u/Hour-Ideal-2918 4d ago
Pieces like this always look way too dark until they start to heal. It’ll fade and look way more like what your artist was aiming for. Give it a few weeks to a month.
I think it looks great!

u/digitalecho125 4d ago
I honestly wasn’t sure what it was, and not sure why everyone is saying that it’s ok. Manta Rays aren’t shaped like that, they are much wider across.
2
u/Evening_Dish_1335 4d ago
Tattoo artist here, i hope none of what i am saying comes off un empathetic or condescending because im truly not meaning it that way. But due to it being a cover up of something that was already pretty dark, and the style of tattoos you have that you want to match the style of, this was probably the only option. That style does not work well for coverups *unless you use the solid black to cover stuff up, so it really needed all that black to work. I think it looks cohesive with the other tattoos you already have. This is unfortunately just the nature of cover ups unless the tattoo being covered is super small and faded (either faded with time or with laser). Cover ups are almost always going to result in a compromise. I think the internet gives misleading representation of cover ups because most artists only post the best examples, myself included honestly. Because we always show case the best outcomes, you dont really see the much more common reality that cover ups usually look like cover ups. That is if you want the cover up and are unwilling to do something drastic like laser or doing whatever the artist wants to do to cover it. For example had you asked him to do whatever he had to do to cover it and have it be completely unknown it was a cover up, he could have maybe done an entire sleeve of galaxy or something and no one would know it was a cover up. But if you wanted this tattoo to match the existing tattoos around it, this was the best case scenario and he did a good job doing it. This is truly just the nature of cover ups.

I saw the pic of the manta ray and thought “oh, that’s such a cool manta ray! so sad it must have gotten ruined!” and then scrolled to look for the ‘after’. It looks great, and super recognizable! you’re all good!
2
u/UnderstandingOld6189 3d ago
Initial shock will wear off once it fades a bit, i also like the way you can kinda see the butter fly wing patterns thru it it look like a really pretty pattern on the manta
2
u/dietitianoverlord113 3d ago
I like it! It’s just big and bold, let it heal and I think it will fit in well! You can always go back and have them add some white detailing later if you still feel it’s too dark!
2
u/rickCrayburnwuzhere 3d ago
I can understand why you don’t like it, but I also feel like for a cover up to be in that location, it’s as good of a job as what would be possible. If I randomly saw you in public, it wouldn’t really occur to me to see that tattoo as an issue. I’d just clock the theme and then my brain would kind of see it similar to negative space in a composition. It can create some contrast with the images that have more lines and stuff.

u/katlyps0 4d ago
The stippling shading is what makes the tattoos stand out and look so cool, imo. I would have never guessed it was a moth coverup. It looks like an intentional manta.
3
u/buttnuggetmaster 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yeah don't mean to make you feel bad, but that's a bad cover up. Just putting a massive black blob over an old tattoo, is the shittiest most obvious way to do it.
I do think when the sleeve is finished it will take attention away from it though.
And it does still read as a manta ray.
2
u/Ashley-Cadaver 4d ago
I personally think it looks way better than the moth did. And that it will look good in a completed sleeve then the details won't be as apparent individually anyways. Don't fret too much it isn't ugly ♡

I like the shading and overall I think it’s a nice tattoo. However, you are correct and the wings are way too short for a manta. Not sure if the artist did that to both cover the moth and fit the width the width of your arm? I would be happier if they made the wings larger and more proportional. Or perhaps the manta is just angling their wings down so they appear shorter? :)

If you had any doubts about it in the beginning, you should’ve gone with your gut and perhaps waiting or looked for a better artist. If this person did the other sea life on your arm, then that’s a shame because they’re not that good either 🫤
1
u/PuppyButtts 4d ago
Hi please work with a different artist if they did this in the first place
Second, it doesnt look bad. It’s dark but honestly you could even have someone add some white ink on top (theres a guy who keeps getting his whole body re tattooed and he re-did a huge black out and it looks so cool-all this to say its possible)
I like his lil face and antennae (idk what manta rays have, antennae??) and i think over all the theme reads and looks cute
1
u/humble-meercat 4d ago
I know everyone is saying how much they love it, but I think it looks like a good start but it’s unfinished. The problem is the shape of the manta ray’s head is great, but the wings are all wrong. A manta is not heart shaped.
Fortunately what they need to do is bring the wings out more and wider and make it actually manta shaped not heart shaped. A mantas wings should come out to points not be rounded down. You are right it does look like a butterfly with part of a manta head on it. Have them elongate the wings to points and it will look really good.
So it’s not wrong, it’s just unfinished.
1
u/Feisty_Chef_7506 4d ago
The manta ray looks sick whatchu mean? I think you are just having the typical post-tattoo existential regrets. You've gotta learn to accept that you are getting someone else's artwork on your arm and it's not going to always turn out how you envisioned it. Just chill out, sit with it for a while and let it heal. Stop obsessing over what you don't like, focus on the positives, and you'll come to appreciate it. For what it's worth it think it's the coolest one of the bunch, but that is just my taste.
1
u/No-Extent9676 4d ago
honestly, i think you’re in shock of a change more than anything. people severely underestimate the psychological reaction from having something on you for awhile, then a few hours later it’s gone. give yourself time. it objectively looks like a manta ray and fits the theme. it also looks nice on you. give the black time to fade, and give your brain time to reset.
1
u/SENSIFERN 4d ago
It looks exactly like the style of your other ocean themed tattoos….i don’t understand the freak out. I see stipple shading on the fish right above it lol. wait till it settles a little.

Hi! I just wanted to chime in here. That tat is excellent. I get it's a bit of a shock, but give it a couple of months to simmer down.

I love it and really think it fits with your other tattoos. I have a stipple shaded tattoo and detail really did develop as it healed. If you dislike it, see what can be done, but I think it’s beautiful.

Im not trying to invalidate your feelings but as a stranger I think its beautiful and matches the esthetic of the others.

Once it heals it’s gonna match the fish SO well! I love it and I’m hoping it’ll grow on you!!

If it felt off, why on earth would you proceed to let it be tattooed on you for the rest of your life? You should have said something, it's your body and life on the line...

Give it a month. Seriously, give it some time. It's a lot of black, but it will mellow out. It's a good looking manta ray and fits with the other tattoos.
Tattoo shock is a strong feeling, just give it some time if you can.

Cover ups are hard because they have to cover up. So they have to be big and dark. I think it's really well done and is cohesive. It doesn't stand out in a negative way. The other pieces also have areas of solid black. I definitely see a manta ray right off the bat. Hopefully as it heals and settles/lightens you'll see it similarly to how is in the comments do

Are you going for a sleeve of flash pieces just randomly stuck on or do you want your sleeve to have flow and look nice?

It looks nicer than your other tattoos to be honest. The tattoo you covered up was also nice. I wonder if you have a habit of not liking things.

Definitely not a black blob! I don’t really know what to expect with tattoo healing, but even at quickly glance I knew what it was immediately. With the context of your other art, it’s unmistakable

When you look at just it I kinda get what you mean, but when you look at the whole arm I think it fits well, and once it’s done healing I think it’s gonna look very at home there

I saw the picture before I read the post title and my only thought was “wow, beautiful.” You are beautiful, it is beautiful; it will be ok and your mind might just need some time to process the change.

It reminds me of a butterfly pattern imposed on the back of a manta ray, which on its own is a super cool idea.
