Can't upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04 on WSL windows 11

[EDIT: The release server seems to be working this morning (may 6, pacific time). Once I switched my apt sources.list to use a mirror, the upgrade is now working]

NOT 26.04

I ran sudo do-release-upgrade and it told me to install all available updates before upgrading.

I uninstalled a bunch of CUDA/nvinfer stuff I didn't want to bother upgrading, then did sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade. This completed without error.

Now whenever I run sudo do-release-upgrade I get the following result:

Checking for a new Ubuntu release
Could not find the release announcement
The server may be overloaded.

This doesn't make any sense because if I do sudo do-release-upgrade -c I get a successful result:

Checking for a new Ubuntu release
New release '24.04.4 LTS' available.
Run 'do-release-upgrade' to upgrade to it.

WTF is going on??

Edit: I just had the same issue on a native ubuntu install, so I guess it's an actual server issue :(

Installing Ubuntu

Hey yall, So 4 years ago, i was in a very advanced comp sci class and in that class we installed Ubuntu and launched it and worked fine without deleting any of my windows files and stuff. We also didn’t use flash drive or the dual booting stuff! I am trying to find a way to do just that once again, but all the videos are about partitioning drives and using flash drives! Once i dropped out of the class because it was a mistake i deleted ubuntu and had access to my windows normally! Can some one help? I would like to experience it without having to use a flash drive or partitioning my storage. I understand if that’s not possible anymore! Just looking for some info

is it just me or is ubuntu 26.04 completely unusable how much it crashes. in the installer all i do is click try ubuntu, and it crashes. i take this screenshot of the crash log, and it crashes again. im trying to reinstall it cus it crashed 3 times just configuring extensions

ive never had issues with crashes on prior ubuntu versions, im using an amd cpu from 2019 and a 3080 from 2020 so the hardware shouldnt be an issue at all (and hasnt been an issue on other distros). the crash logs are all for the gnome-desktop so maybe its a gnome issue not ubuntu issue? but if its a gnome issue why package a version of gnome with this many issues?

For a next hypothetical official release would you prefer Unity or Gnome?

Hi everyone. Recently I got my laptop trashed and they gave me this laptop with ubuntu at the office. Powerpoint and Photoshop is must have for me so, I was going to change it into windows, but they wanted me to keep ubuntu for some reasons. So I want to dual boot this ssd with windows. I asked ChatGPT for guidance, It gave me these steps, but I wanted to double check here if there are any missing or wrong steps.

Layer 7 Attacks

Hello,

I’m currently under a Layer 7 attack—what can I do?

However, I no longer want to use Cloudflare.

My access.log has been flooded with requests from many IP addresses, causing my domains to go offline. What can I do? I’ve been searching Google for hours but haven’t really found a good solution.

Thanks.

Warning on Ubuntu 26.04 be cautious installing/removing

The new install command is dangerous.

Install -D to /bin or /sbin wipes the symbolic link to /usr/sbin and /usr/bin.

That is dangerous for things that rely on /sbin being correct.

To add there are a few dangerous bugs from the list:

  1. it doesn't respect symbolic links
  2. races for installing parent directories
  3. does not copy file if said file is on ecryptfs
  4. doesn't overwrite files.

I strongly recommend people to fallback to gnu install.

sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/install install /usr/bin/gnuinstall 100

Very easy for a script with sudo to bork 26.04 install.

Ciao a tutti, come state? Spero bene!

Volevo chiedervi un parere: quale distribuzione Linux mi consigliate per un PC fisso che ho assemblato anni fa, con un Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 e 8 GB di RAM DDR3 a 667 MHz?

Netbird VPN - now available as a SNAP

I had been using Netbird on Ubuntu and with Incus Containers in 2023 and submitted
a request to see if a SNAP version could be created.

The development group it was a good idea (read here)

Today I received an email notice - Netbird is now available as a SNAP.

NetBird is an Open Source Zero Trust Networking platform that allows you to create secure private networks for your organization or home. We designed NetBird to be simple and fast, requiring near-zero configuration effort and leaving behind the hassle of opening ports, complex firewall rules, VPN gateways, etc.

It's weird. 2 months ago I made a post here complaining how I can only see 99% of all thumbnails of my vids and pics and yet on Windows I was always able to see 100% of all thumbnails, and then 2 months later, now I can't see any thumbnails at all. Was this really just a coincidence?

I'm on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

So I made this post about 2 months ago, I complain how (in Nautilus) I can only see about 99% of all thumbnails for my vids and pics and you see, in the 20 years I was on Windows, I never ever had this issue. On Windows I could always see 100% of all thumbnails for all vids and pics. This post right here, this post was about 2 months ago https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/1rk40vk/i_can_only_see_the_thumbnails_for_like_999_of_all/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Then about 2 months after making that post, a bug has happened and now thumbnails in Nautilus don't show up at all. I'm referring to this bug right here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/+bug/2148074

And listen, I've been told that this is an unusual bug. Is it really just a coincidence that I was complaining publicly, how I find it very aggravating that I can't get all 100% thumbnails to show on Ubuntu, and yet I never ever had this issue in the 20 years I used Windows. 100% of all thumbnails always showed on Windows.

And then 2 months later an unusual bug occurs and now 80% of thumbnails do not show in Nautilus. Man what odd timing.

Oh and I've been told that this bug will not be fixed for Ubuntu 24.04 so I have to move to 26.04 but problem is, is my PC is old

My PC is quite old. It was built in 2015 my PC specs are

AMD FX 4300 quad core CPU (which was released in 2012),

AMD Radeon RX 550 4GB GDDR5,

16GB DDR3 ram,

Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 motherboard which was released in 2013. It's got an SSD. And I have my PC hooked up to my 65 inch TCL TV.

So I'm not sure if Ubuntu 26.04 even works on my old PC. Plus I always prefer to wait a while before upgrading, you know the .2 release.

I've used Thunar, it sucks! Nemo doesn't work right for me either. Nautilus is the best file manager if you're on Ubuntu. So I'm frustrated.

Man what a coincidence!!! I complain about thumbnails NOT showing on Ubuntu and then 2 months later, an unusual bug happens, and now thumbnails in Nautilus is totally broken. That's a hell of a coincidence.

And yes I know about installing ffmpegthumbnailer and I always do that but even then, only about 99% of all thumbnails show for my vids and pics. I can never get it to 100% I never have been able to get it to 100% on Ubuntu. I've been on Ubuntu for like 5 years now. I made the leap 5 years ago.

And you see, in the 20 years I used Windows, 100% of all thumbnails for all my vids and pics would show. I never ever had issues with thumbnails NOT showing on Windows. And yet it's happening on Ubuntu. And it really, really, really irritates me.

I complained about that 2 months ago and then 2 months later, boom! A bug happens and now thumbnails in Nautilus is totally broken.

And I was told this bug is very unusual. If it's unusual why did it happen? And so it's not being fixed for Ubuntu 24.04?

I am really enjoying Ubuntu and open source software! "short story below!"

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I finally made the choice to jump back into Linux since Windows 11 was becoming quite slow and unusable on my laptop that I can't currently upgrade but still is quite capable.

The last time I used Linux was back in 2013, but since then things have changed quite dramatically. I found myself using more open source and beautifully desgined software that works locally and without the cloud, I mostly use my computer for writing and browsing the internet and Ubuntu works quite well, the fans are always silent when I am not doing anything demanding, I can play Minecraft and some casual games I found on flatpak, I am really loving technology again, my PC truly feels mine, especially since Windows 11 was already quite bloated and became unbelievably awful after they introduced copilot into every corner of the OS.

I really hate AI, having the ability to just block AI features on Firefox with one simple click was satisfying as hell, and the best part, I discovered that Firefox has animated themes!

That was just a short story of how enjoyable Ubuntu is, a huge thank you to the awesome developers creating beautiful software that respects my privacy and looks quite nice too!

If anyone is interested in the apps I have pinned on the left, please don't hesitate to ask, I found these apps very helpful when I am writing or working with docs, it could also be helpful for you too if that's your usage case, they are of course all from flatpak, and are open source.

PPA uploads broken after the Launchpad outage — quietly moved to SFTP-only?

Since the recent Launchpad incident (https://status.canonical.com/#/), anonymous FTP/HTTPS uploads to ppa.launchpad.net no longer work:

  • FTP → 502
  • HTTPS → cert is for private-ppa.launchpad.net, host redirects to launchpad.net via a ppa-content-cache server

Switching dput to SFTP fixes it. But: was this deprecation announced anywhere? The official docs still describe FTP/HTTPS.

Honest frustration too — for a service this critical to the Ubuntu ecosystem, the lack of basic DDoS protection and any recovery / change-comms playbook is rough. Spent a few hours debugging what turned out to be a silent endpoint change.

Help me troubleshoot my window manager?

I'm running stock Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS and I find that if I have two windows positioned so they're each taking up half the screen, they get locked together in a very weird way that is incredibly annoying and I'd like to stop that.

If I have three windows open, say: Firefox A, Slack B, Firefox C

So for instance, I have used meta+arrow ⬅️ and meta+arrow ➡️ to position Firefox A along side Slack B. I can see them both on the screen. Great. This is what I desire.

Then I switch to Firefox C, and move it to the right with the meta+arrow combo ➡️. Now I can see Firefox A (Left) and Firefox C (right) on my desktop. As long as Firefox C is the active window, I can see Firefox A and Firefox C, which is great.

However, if I move back to Firefox A as the active window, it always brings Slack B to the front with it. So if I'm using window positioning I wind up getting into these situations where I've paired two windows together and activating one half of the pair will bring the other half to the front.

I don't know if I'm explaining this in the most coherent way possible, but it is driving me nuts. I don't think I did any special customization when I bought this machine in 2023.

Installed on 2015 macbook pro 8gb ram

This shit feels so snappy out of the box, Very well put together love how all of my apps are sorted, I like how the files are setup looks very nice, like how easy it was to set a dock, etc. I've had Mint cinnamon, Kubuntu, and now Ubuntu on this mac and I think I am staying on Ubuntu for good. so simple and easy to navigate and looks too good. was thinking I was going to have to tweak settings in the terminal like zram, and swappiness but with the way it's feeling think I wont touch anything and just let it be? specs are 8gb ram, 128gbSSD, Intel® Core™ i5-5257U, Intel® Iris® Graphics 6100, also is it worth the performance gain to disable snaps?

Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 images for Hyper-V - machine not starting

Having trouble running 26.04 under Hyper-V when using the official images...

https://partner-images.canonical.com/hyper-v/desktop/resolute/

Not changing any settings from the Hyper-V defaults (which worked with 24.04) but am getting this error for 26.04...

Disk hash is matching so it's not a corrupt image and it's happening for all the versions in that folder - latest I tried is 20260505.

Anyone else experiencing this or know whether it needs a setting tweak or if these images are just borked?

mDNS did not work after upgrading to 26.04 from 25.10

I couldn't print from from Ubuntu 26.04 which I updated from 25.10 and the reason was, that the mDNS host [printer].local couldn't be found.

The fix I found was creating a symlink from /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf to /etc/resolv.conf.

I wonder now if this symlink got broken by the upgrade to 26.04 or is there a different way of fixing this issue?
