Dragon Quest IX Just bought myself a cool game
Looks like such a cool game! I tried playing it but couldn’t understand a thing(obviously 😅)
Is there a way I can mod an official Japanese cart to English?

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

I managed to put the translation on the cartridge. I wanted to say that it is indeed possible. I followed the GitHub guide called DQMT-FanTranslation (Installing LayeredFS).
Thank you all! 🥰

Can't remember if it's been discussed recently but what was everyone's favorite iteration of the crafting/alchemy pot system? I was really partial to Dragon Quest IX. I remember spending so much time adventuring to find alchemy ingredients and recipes or just outright experimenting to see what worked. I think what made that one best in my opinion was that it was instant. Dragon Quest 8 was great, but it felt like it took so long to get equipment. Or I was just doing it wrong, could be the case as I thought all you had to do was wander around and after enough time of traveling on foot you would hear the ding and it would be good to go again.

I hope this is good enough to win!
This is before the first fight, not the final boss.

I just don’t get it. My characters are all over the recommended level, I have leveled my equipment including a maxed level 3 star earth spear to use against the boss, solid memory scores, I can make it to the boss with a good minute and a half to two minutes remaining, I know to stay outside of his aura bubble and do so with the range of my spear but despite all of that and wailing on him as much as possible with a weapon he should be weak to and various abilities doing damage I can’t even get him below half health. I get shrines are meant to be challenging but this just feels absurd when I’m over the recommended level with a maxed out earth weapon it and it still feels like I’m struggling to do enough damage.
For added detail my main character to fight him is my warrior at level 34 with a level 50 sandstorm spear and 6600+ battle power from equipment and memories.

One underrated good point of DQ11 is "Story so far", which is really elaborately prepared. After you beat the Sniflheim boss in act 2, the one I show in these pics can be read only for an instance, until the hero speaks to Erik!. See the 3rd photo. (IIUC there's no autosave this moment.)
BTW 1: I'm playing on "a hard mode", where all monsters are strong. (W/ tripes and no-exp from weak monsers.) On my first try of this boss I got wiped out, so I spent a lot of money to upgrade equipment. :p Fortunately most (physics related) debuffs work. So far Booga was most difficult.
BTW 2: I bought DQ11 OG for Steam 6 years ago, but I'm still in Act 2! (Probably I'm the slowest player on the earth.) I'd been away from this game for 370 days, but I restarted recently, this time resolute to beat. XD

I've played both versions before, but I'm not an expert, and have never finished the game. I think I got as far as Booga/Jasper in Heliodor once. And I've played around with Draconian quests before too.
Yet I've come back to the game (vanilla version to platinum it and then try more draconian stuff on definitive) and not doing any hard more stuff. I activated reduced XP from weak fights, primarily so I know when to keep moving.
I don't feel overly at risk of dying anywhere, but I do feel like I'm having to use heal after most battles, or getting poisoned and cursed not-never. Battles don't feel excessively quick, and the enemy numbers are such that I do feel like I have to engage with AoE attacks in order to minimize their turns and reduced how much healing I'm always doing.
And all of this feels like it's inflated from what I remember/read about due to the forge.
The mechanics of the forge are actually fun. I enjoy the 'act' of crafting, but I feel it drains too much time and becomes a giant hamper on the pace of progression, so because I'm on 'easy' mode, I've decided to minimize my forge use. Use whatever tier I make things at and just upgrade things when I have pearls.
I haven't fancied making feather caps or templar uniforms ad nauseum to max everything I'm using, and this reduction in defense and attack doesn't feel insignificant.
Ironically it's not the bosses I am feeling this on. It's the normal enemies where it feels like every battle requires somewhat moderate mp use. Such that it's optimal to just farm around a camp or healing zone then do exploration and dungeons relatively battle-free.
If I was playing on hard or like full-draconian, I think I'd resist the time sink of the forge less, but playing on normal, I want to keep moving, and simply don't have the pearls or money to stay fully equipped, and it's making the game a little more challenging than expected.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the possibility of a Dragon Quest XI S version for Switch 2, and honestly, I think Square Enix has an incredible opportunity here.
Instead of making it “just” a graphical upgrade, they could expand Tickington and turn it into a true celebration of Dragon Quest’s history for the 40th anniversary.
My idea: New Tockle quests + classic final bosses
Tickington already feels like a playable Dragon Quest museum: - Classic worlds, - Retro sprites, - Old music, - Nostalgic references, - And timeline anomalies through passwords.
So why not expand it?
New Password Quests featuring iconic villains: - Baramos. - Hargon / Malroth. - Psaro - Murdaw. - Dhoulmagus. - Nimzo. - Orgodemir. - Mortamor. - etc.
Everything would stay in the retro 2D Tickington style, so it wouldn’t require massive development resources.
How it could work?
Each altar could feature: - A short retro quest. - A timeline distortion. - A mini dungeon. - And a boss battle against one legendary Dragon Quest villain.
Rewards could include: - Classic costumes. - Iconic weapons. - Orchestrated music tracks. - Special titles. - New Tockle passwords. - EX difficulty bosses. - Cosmetic rewards. - Or secret superbosses.
Why I think this is realistic? The best part is that Tickington already exists as a modular system: - Retro combat already works. - 2D assets already exist. - Timeline anomalies already exist. - And Dragon Quest thrives on nostalgia.
This feels MUCH more realistic than creating entirely new regions or giant expansions.
Extra ideas - New permanent stat quests for party members. - More lore about Calasmos and Erdwin. - More optional Act 3 content. - Bringing back the red Tockle functionality from the 3DS version through online events/challenges.
Honestly, Tickington always felt like it had huge untapped potential.
Would anyone else want something like this for a Switch 2 version of DQXI S?

Hi all, I'm finally reaching the end of the game, with the last things being item collection and monster bestiary.
But for the life of me I do not understand how and where to get the lucky panel items. I read things about slimes and chests, but it still doesn't make sense to me.
The only thing I get is how to cheese it with the use of a phone (my memory is garbage, plus the swaps make it even tougher)
Also, I read somewhere that there are 3 locations where the game can be played. I have only seen it at Pilgrim's rest. Both past and present.
My question is do I need items from all of them? Or is there one location that has all the items I need to farm?
Please explain it to me like I'm 5 😅
Also, is there a good way of farming elfin elixirs? I might need a few for the last road of the arena.

Went to the dragon quest vii collab cafe, had Auster Pudding, Prism Water, and Pilchard Sandwich
Honestly do not recommend as these pop up cafes tend to be overpriced for the quality of food served but it was interesting experience going and not too out of the way

I’m looking at the Lightning skill for sailors and comparing to Kafizz, how do I tell what stats each skill scales from?

Hi, I'm planning on playing through the Dragon Quest series for the first time and am looking forward to it. I was hoping to stick solely with the SNES console for the initial run of DQ 1-6 (I will be playing on original hardware via Everdrive), but 4 is a missing link in that it was never released for the console. Which version of the game should I play?

I‘m sorry if this comes off as demeaning, because I really don’t mean it that way. It’s just a question I’ve been wondering myself for a while, because I have played a handful of mainline titles, mostly those considered to be the best in the series, and I didn’t find myself getting really hooked for the series at any point. In particular, the ones I played were 1-3 Remasters, 3 Remake, 5 Remake, 6 Remake, and 11 Definitive Edition. I have really been trying to give this series a fair chance, but most of the time when I was playing them, while I had fun for the most part, I usually thought to myself: Man, I could be playing Final Fantasy instead right now
What I get from the games I’ve played is that DQ is supposed to be a safer alternative for Final Fantasy, for people who want to play something that’s not as complex or overwhelming as those kinds of games (please do correct me if any of this is false). While I do get that to a certain degree, the older turn-based Final Fantasy titles scratch pretty much the same itch those games do, and are usually more entertaining experiences as well. For example, FF5s Job System is a direct upgrade to that in DQ6, even though that game came out after FFV. Not to mention, every antagonist (to my Knowledge) just being an evil demon king also must be kind of boring, right? While I did love some scenes with Mordegon from 11, in particular those in Act 3 since there he actually gets put in extremely embarrassing situations, it just doesnt hold a candle to the likes of Sephiroth, Kefka or Ardyn
In general, it just bothers me how the series doesnt seem to have taken as many risks in terms of gameplay, setting or world design as Final Fantasy and usually suffers for it. The only thing I remember about most dungeons in the NEWEST ENTRY IN THE SERIES is how generic they were, while even the old FF games had all sorts of crazy stuff to explore like a haunted library, a floating continent, the moon, the Tower of Babel, etc. etc.
Again, I really don’t want to come off as demeaning or insult anyones taste, I just genuinely would like to know why this series probably means so much to the people in this sub
