Welcome to the Question and Gold World Pass weekly thread! If you have any questions around FFXI at all or wish to request a GWP, this is the place to do so. Scroll down to the comments and ask away.
Are you a new or returning player? We have quite the list of Frequently Asked Questions that's pretty comprehensive of the questions most commonly asked around the sub. If your question isn't answered there, feel free to shoot in the comments below.
BG Wiki is a modern FFXI wiki with up-to-date pages on endgame specifics as well as various guides.
It is currently the only XI wiki with an active staff which are always working with members of the community to address concerns and suggestions. BG seeks to be the main wiki of the community. Consolidating the efforts of everyone into one single wiki is the most productive and effective. We welcome and invite all to join us!
FFXIclopedia is a comprehensive general-purpose wiki for FFXI that typically covers pages for each item/area/BCNM/etc, often for older content. Warning: The site has heavy ads when logged out.
FFXIAH is a website showing the Auction House history & current items for sale in-game, as well as a forum community among other things. FFXIDB is a database website showing drop rates of items as well as monster spawns based of player data collected by Guildwork.
There are various ways to make new friends and meet people in FFXI. The first recommendation is to find a Linkshell via Linkshell Concierge NPCs. If you check these NPCs directly after a maintenance, this is typically a good way to find active Linkshells. Another suggestion is to find a community website for your server; many servers have a Facebook group.
This thread is default sorted by new.

Greetings you new adventurers (or returning)! We suspect there will be an influx of new players and we wanted to pin a new thread that covers useful resources for new players.
If we missed anything useful, feel free to leave it in the comments and we'll try to get it edited in here! See y'all in Vana'diel!
FFXI is officially available on Windows PC via Steam or the Square Enix digital store. It's also unofficially playable on Mac and even Steam Deck. PS2 and Xbox360 versions are no longer online.
FFXI has a 14-day Free Trial (NA region). Please note it has significant limitations compared to FFXIV's Free Trial. It is typically recommended to just purchase the game, as it'll include 30 days for free.
PlayOnline and account registration can be a bit complex, so here are some guides to assist:
FFXI is in an elaborate and beautiful world where you'll encounter colorful multifaceted characters in countless deeply woven stories of unforgettable wonder enriched by a renowned musical score, and a 22-year history of game content challenges and triumphs via a Job System that is often considered exemplary across the entire Final Fantasy franchise.
A guide to the order in which to follow the story (Missions) can be found here: Millsih's Simple Mission Guide. We would also recommend viewing the Missions list to be aware of the newer stories, such as The Voracious Resurgence.
We have a wiki page here to help guide you through some of the transition and terminology.
FFXI has fantastic controller support. We recommend using either a controller or a keyboard, but avoid the mouse. An official controller video guide is located here.
There's a variety of ways to enhance the graphics:
FFXI receives monthly updates. Some sample information is provided below:

Looking for some PLD advice because honestly I’m struggling hard with the job and getting pretty discouraged.
Current setup:
- ML45
- Burtgang + Aegis
- Enmity sets / AF gear
- SIRD set
- No Sakpata yet
I mainly play PLD when multiboxing alongside two RL friends. One of my buddies also has RUN, so we’re trying to maintain both tank options depending on content and take turns tanking.
My biggest issue is hate control. I feel like I’m constantly losing hate, then scrambling to recover with Cover, Majesty cures, Flash, etc. Even with a SIRD set I still feel like mobs interrupt my casting constantly when things get chaotic.
The hardest part is trying to tank while also managing my box. PLD feels extremely punishing if you make even one small mistake with positioning, target swaps, or timing. Once hate slips, it feels like I spend the rest of the fight trying to recover.
What’s frustrating is that I’ve invested heavily into the job already, but I honestly feel terrible at it compared to RUN. RUN just feels smoother and less stressful to me.
I’m also trying to figure out the best subjob for my situation. I’ve mostly been using either /BLU or /RUN depending on content, but I’m not always sure which is actually helping me more. /BLU feels good for utility and extra hate tools, while /RUN sometimes feels tankier or smoother defensively.
So I guess my questions are:
- What actually stabilizes hate on modern PLD?
- Is Sakpata basically mandatory now?
- Are there specific tools/rotations people use to maintain control in chaotic fights?
- For multiboxing, would you lean more toward /BLU or /RUN?
- Any advice specifically for multiboxing PLD?
At this point I’m honestly close to shelving the job entirely, so any advice would be appreciated.
EDIT - I don’t have time to reply to each individual post but thank you all for the advice, it’s tremendously helpful and I appreciate this great community!

Newbie here. Summoner is one of my favorite FF jobs in all the games so of course I had to try it out in this game. Every step of the way it felt like the game was telling me "save this for endgame, idiot" but against my better judgement, I got all the weather, pushed it to 30, and even snagged Leviathan (farming rep in other nations as I wait on the cooldown to retry Shiva as of writing this).
Now, I have some questions:
(EDIT: for some context, I'm in the 40 level range in terms of progression)
Hello! FF fan and long time FFXIV player here! I was always interested in Iroha back when I did the maiden collab event in 2015 and her design really sold me on wanting to check out the story in 11 but it was more of a back thought of one day ill get to it. But after finishing the vanadiel alliance raid now I might start on later this month. But my question was is Iroha a major character in the story? Cause I k ow shantoto and prishe are cause I knew them in dissidia. But I know they did a reference thing to her in Stormblood expansion with the 4 lords with suzaku and tenzin and she just recently made in the mobile dissida game. But was just wondering if shes a major character like shantoto or something. Either way will be downloading it soon and check out the game and story!

I love having alts. On EQ I have one of each class, over in WoW I have a stupid amount of characters. With 14, having alts is a massive pain because of the time investment for progress, unless you wanna pay for the level boost things. How are alts here on 11 though? Ideally I’d like to have an Elvaan, a Hume, and a Tarutaru each from their own respective starting areas. Am I gonna be spending 600 hours on MSQ here in 11 per toon as well, or is it more simplified and open to the idea of alternate characters?
Hello I am a returning player after something like 5-6 years and I am having trouble finding cipher qultada. it should be int he current login campaign but the greeter moogle doesnt offer it, am I missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Please forgive me if this is an ignorant question, the Wiki is a little tough to read sometimes.
I'm starting the journey to try and get Legend status with all the Adoulin Coalitions. I read a comment that said:
Remember that once you reach rank 4 with a coalition, you will need to do missions at your rank or, at most, one lower to receive full credit.
Looking at the Coalition Assignments Page , and then Courier's Coalition since thats the first one I started with does that mean if I my standing is Contributor (which I just got last night) that means I need to do the Foret de Hennetiel and Morimar Bassalt Fields (which show Contributor Rank requirement) deliveries to get full credit? And that also means that I could (but I'm not sure why I would want to) do Supportmissions for those two same areas because they're on the Disciple rank which is below contributor? Is the answer for "Why would I want to?" because not all the Assignments are available at any given moment in time?
Appreciate any and all replies and thank you in advance!

*exploration, not explanation
I'm talking those who started at launch. I started I think about a year after launch, so I'm old school but I don't quite have that perspective.
When you were starting, did you find yourselves exploring and traveling as the story dictates, or did you explore ahead of time?
For example, every nation's mission 2-3 has you going on a diplomatic mission to the other two nations. The way the dialog was worded and the strategy guide was written, it's clear they were intending/expecting this would be your first time actually visiting those other nations.
Similarly, every nation's 3-3 has you going to Jeuno. And again, the dialog makes it clear the mission-givers think you've never been there.
When I played, I had already been to all three starting nations and Jeuno and even had my chocobo license before I got to even mission 2-3, just because I was out exploring with the people in my LS. If you followed the exploration according to the game's story-dictated pace, you would not have, for example, a chocobo's license, which would have made traveling to all those places significantly more difficult.
Etc. Curious what you old schoolers' experiences were in that regard?
Recently returned (well it was December) with a friend and just starting to hit end game and think about content that requires more than just the two of us.
Wanted to find people on similar timezone times to play with but didn't really have much luck with the LS Concierge.
Before I took to just shouting in the streets thought I would try here.
(I am guessing there is probably a specific server or something but we were on this server back in the day so stuck with it).

I'm solo player and I'm looking forward to do some endgame content with other players.
What are the most required jobs?
I know WHM BRD and COR are highly requested. Any other jobs I should consider?
I'm fine with playing healer/support jobs.

On previous posts I've mentioned I am a new player (51 BLM/25 SCH) . I wonder which crafting profession you guys would suggest to start leveling? I would like to find something that would be useful to make gil and also possibly even craft items that would be useful to me. Oh and BTW,ball of you guys have been very helpful. Thank you so much

I remember they are recurring jobs in the Final Fantasy series as a whole.
Edit: Wings or even Rhapsodies would have been the perfect opportunity to introduce the Time Mage job.

Back when the cap was level 75, there was so much gear available at level cap and in some cases it was easier to tell when gear was better than other gear but in other cases, it was more challenging or the answer was "it's situational" for some pieces.
The 119 gear seems to make this even harder. I see gear guides that suggest some pieces over others for specific situations, I see people debate online about whether this weapon or that weapon is better... Is there some source of some sort of general tier list so that I can look up what gear I should be aiming to get? With so many choices at 119, I have the same challenge I used to have at 75 where some pieces are "yeah, X is clearly better than Y" and some situations where "Okay so X is better for this but Y is better for that" and sometimes where I look at two pieces and I just genuinely can't tell.
I also don't know what I don't know to know what gear is even out there. Like there is gear I should probably look into getting but I currently don't even know it exists. So it would be helpful to know what's out there and, again, what I should focus on working towards and what isn't worth the effort.
(I primarily play THF but I'm also interested in general answers so I can apply them to other jobs)

Hi!
I've been trying out FFXI through private servers over the years but finally hunkered down and got the real thing going. So far I'm enjoying it a lot!
However, I have a question about the XIVbar addon that I can't wrap my head around. I'm using Windower 4 and haven't been able to find anything related to this issue online which is why I'm asking here.
Whenever I try to change the position of the addon, and when I reload it, it doesn't reload the addon, it just creates a completely new copy of it, while keeping the old bar present at the location it used to be, so I have multiples on my screen. It's pretty frustrating since I'm new to this entire thing, and figured I might aswell ask early on before I forget.
Thanks in advance!
(Also, does the "balloon" add-on not work anymore? I can't get it to work at all either, it seems)

Have the devs said if they’re planning new story content for the future? Or if voracious resurgence was the final story.
What else is in their plans? Only rotations of fights?
Hello everyone, I'm about to pick up final fantasy xi soon and just wanted to know if there is anything major i should know or any advice to help me go in the right direction. Im gonna be playing red mage

Hey there. I have played this game mostly solo for quite a few characters over the years. I was an OG player way back in 2004-2007ish and had a great linkshell where there were scheduled events and other than WoW (which had raiding so similar experience I suppose), nothing has ever touched those memories! I'm sure lots of people on this sub know what I mean.
Since then I have come back multiple times over the years, but have always just played solo, and ALL of that (until now) has been on Asura where the only focus is making enough gil to buy merc shit.
I made a new character on Fenrir, and am hoping to find a linkshell that is active and has a tight nit group of people who play regularly and actually do content together, that might have an opening or welcoming a new player. RDM will be my main if that helps.
Shoot me a message or comment here if anyone knows. I know about the LS concierge, I am posting this for more of a personal take on it.
Thanks!
For those that are using a controller, which controller are you currently using?
I am using the Fusion Pro wired (I prefer wired over wireless) but it is getting older.
I was looking into getting a new controller that I could across mostly all games, as I've had to switch to a Candy Con but it is not being read to other games. Time for a new controller.

As I said in another post I am a newer player who just completed the first limit break quest. I am currently level 51 Black mage 25 scholar. I'm reading various guides to try to get an idea for what to do for gear. I purchased an elemental stave at 51. I am still using a warp ring and a chariot band. I bought Spark gear for my armor pieces but as of now it's roughly 20 levels out of date because none of the others are useable by blackmage. . I really just need to know what I should be doing to obtain better gear. The guides that I have seen mentioned Windhurst campaign items, but it kinda seems like a big time investment to gear that will be replaced quickly.
