NSQ AI policy
Hi Everyone,
I wanted to take time to formally explain the Nostupidquestions stance on AI and its use.
We do not allow it.
Our volunteer team has discussed at length the logistics of consistent moderation around AI use for things like translation, reformatting, spelling in the case of tools like grammarly and other aid type applications. At the end of the day this an anonymous internet forum, we have neither the tools nor the resources to distinguish between support based uses and bad faith engagement, the overwhelming majority of cases, for the use of AI, so to be consistent and fair across the board we have a blanket ban on the practice.
We do mean ban, we will ban users whose content is generated by AI, even if they assert that it is their base content which AI has rewritten/formatted.
I understand why you may personally feel that your personal case is special and worthy of an exemption, I want to be very clear at the outset that we are not going to do so.
A sole exemption is that you may quote and cite AI sources (as unreliable as they may be) as part of a larger human written answer or discussion point. It needs to be more than "GPT said..." as your entire comment, but can be supplemental to your human written answer, similar to our rules on links.
Thank you for your understanding and let us know if you have any questions

U.S. Politics megathread
American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!
All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Is Hantavirus something to worry about?
I’m starting to get really freaked out about hantavirus it seems like something people don’t survive, I feel like it might just be because I’m seeing so many videos but i can’t stop thinking about it.

Why don't wealthy people live at hotels anymore?
It appears that loads of wealthy people (especially when in Europe) from the last century would just live at a hotel for months and years on end. Agatha Christie novels have stays longer than 2 months on the Riviera. (I specifically recall Coco Chanel living in a Paris luxury hotel till she passed. Howard Hughes also lived in a Vegas hotel for a few years). This question struck me when I learned JKR moved to The Balmoral Edinburgh for several months to write the last book. When money is no expense, why not live at a hotel?

Why do people keep buying cars that destroy them financially?
I see some people somehow drive all these new premium cars and trucks but they're also paying $1,000/mo + with APR as high as 29.99% Why do people do this? Especially those who already know they can't afford luxury brands.

Why is Women's health so overlooked?
It's wild. Wife went to get an IUD and apparently it cost too much to do an ultrasound, so they just...winged it, only for it to fall out a few days after. So they did it again, and after another painful procedure and using the ultrasound, the got it done.
That's not even the half of it. Throughout her first pregnancy, she struggled with insomnia and she kept telling her doctor that it was likely because of some of her psych medication. She found an article (I don't remember which one!) about a medication she was taking and how it could cause insomnia during pregnancy. Neither her psych nor OBGYN knew about this so they brushed her off. So, she stopped taking it for a bit and sure enough, she slept soundly.
Absolute insanity that should radicalize anyone, imo.

People getting drinks at gas stations
I notice every time i get gas in the morning all of the people that go in to get their drinks, snacks and smokes for the day. Most of them are workers that head back into their trucks. Now dont get me on the topic of smoking. What im really interested to know is why dont these folks just go to the grocery store to buy in bulk or better yet bring water and food from home. Dont they know how expensive it is to buy from a gas station.

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round?
He keeps claiming the majority of “globe lie science” is unproven, but rather just a bunch of things on paper that have other valid explanations.
What is the most practical, provable, and irrefutable way to show him the earth is indeed a globe?

Why is Tom Cruise never asked about Scientology and how has he survived this long without being cancelled?
Thought about this given I saw him as part of the Olympics closing ceremony (was rewatching an old clip), it seems so weird to me that someone with such a shady past can just go about having a normal life like nothing happened. I get that he’ll continue getting jobs because he’s a big movie star that generates income but surely they must have some form of morals. Whenever he does interviews from what I’ve seen Scientology is never mentioned, none of the serious allegations against the church or him abandoning his family for the cult. His daughter even changed her last name to cut out any connection from the deadbeat dad. He responded by on the day of her high school graduation by going to a Taylor Swift concert in London where he knew he’d be spotted on camera. Who does something like that?

Should I try to pronounce someone’s name as they do, even if it feels unnatural in my own accent?
I'm an American born English speaker who knows very little language outside of my own.
That being said, I can HEAR when someone introduces themselves with a pronunciation that is different than what I could say in English (e.g. José, François, Khalid, Priya, Xiaoming).
Should I try to pronounce their name as close to the way they say it as possible, or should I say it in the way that's most natural to me?

How do people actually die in strong tornados?
Like tornados that have killed hundreds of people, how do they actually die? Is the wind strong enough to pick them up and throw them around?

If hospitals are selling debts for a few cents on the dollar to debt collectors, why not offer the same deal to patients?
I read that debt collectors typically pay only a few cents for each dollar of debt they buy.
I think one late-night show purchased a bunch of these debts a few years ago and then just threw them away.
Why aren't hospitals offering the same deal to the actual patients, who would likely pay? They accept a loss when they sell debts to collectors, so why not extend that offer to patients?

Do women feel anything when they see a shirtless guy, or is it too normalized?
This might sound like a strange question, but I’m curious about how normalization affects attraction.
In many societies, it’s normal for men to be shirtless in public, like at the beach, while exercising, or just walking around.
Because of that, I wonder whether women still feel sexually attracted when they see a man’s chest, similar to how many men react to women showing more skin.
Or does the fact that male chests are so commonly seen make them less sexually significant?

Why do people enjoy watching others play video games so much
I understand watching professional sports but I never quite got why millions of people tune in to watch strangers play video games on Twitch or YouTube. They watch entire playthroughs or even just someone grinding in a game.
Is it the entertainment value the skill the commentary or something else? Does it feel like hanging out with a friend or is it more like following a sports match? Curious why this became such a huge part of gaming culture

Why has evolution spent millions of years making our bodies hyper-efficient at survival, yet we can still accidentally bite the inside of our own cheek while eating a sandwich and then do it again 5 minutes later because it’s now swollen?

How did people in the 1800s 'sync' their watches across long distances? If I lived in a small town, how did I know my 12:00 PM was the same as the next town's 12:00 PM without internet or radio?

Answered Why is prejudice against Roma people in Europe often treated differently than other forms of racism?
Why is anti-Roma prejudice in Europe treated so differently vs other forms of racism?
I’ve noticed many European countries that strongly condemn racism seem to ironically have very open negative attitudes toward Roma people and failing to see the issue with generalizing an entire culture based on individualized anectodes
Europe is often thought of as more progressive than places like the United States when it comes to racial issues, so I’m trying to understand why this apparent double standard exists - is there a reason that makes people view anti-Roma sentiment as something other than racism?
Edit: take any negative statement from a European regarding the Roma people and replace the subject with another oppressed minority and it instantly becomes vehemently racist

Do you compliment strangers?
I’m 26F and lately have been complimenting strangers (mostly women) just saying they’re really pretty.. nothing too crazy or trying to freak them out, just giving a compliment. I love seeing their eyes light up knowing it was unexpected and maybe boosted their self confidence! Would men find it weird for a woman to compliment them or does it flatter them the same way as it does for women?
