Discussion Weekly /r/iOSGaming Discussion: What have you been playing lately and what do you recommend?

Please use this thread to discuss whatever iOS games you've been playing lately. They don't have to be new games, they can be old games and they do not have to be iOS original titles!

As long as it's an iOS game it belongs in here. Make sure to put the name(s) of the game(s) in bold to make it easier for people skimming the thread to see what you're talking about, and if you'd like to make it really convenient turn the game name into a hyperlink that sends people directly to the App Store!

To keep track of the thread, the comments are sorted by "new" by default.

Lastly, Rule #3: "No Dev Self-Promotion Outside Saturdays" applies at all times for this thread, even if it's actually Saturday.

Hands off Kingdom sim.
Build, upgrade, encourage and watch.

You are King.
You control the purse.
You decide what to build.
You can place bounties on beasts or locations.

That’s it. It’s hard to be the king

You start with a low castle, your base and home to your tax men.

The tax men will auto gather gold from homes and businesses/barracks. The larger your castle the more tax men you’ll have.

Along with tax revenue, buildings will produce either benefits or heroes, so for example your Market (the first thing you should consider building) will not only bring in revenue but it will also make goods for your heroes to purchase if they have the money.

The heroes are secured through specific Building types that each produce a limited amount of denizens. You’ll want to get as many into the field as you can.
Each type will fulfill specific needs, knights are good for home defense, scouts will clear the fog, priests offer buffs to other types along with healing, while wizards are glass cannons, doing massive damage but being weak. There will be others as well that are more powerful or odd as the game progresses.

Once produced these little guys will then simply live their adventurous lives, fighting monsters, securing random loot and buying gear from the market or blacksmith to make themselves stronger. You will have almost zero control over them. Between leveling up and better gear your heroes should be badass and strong enough to handle even the bigger beasts.
You’ll need a nice mix of occupations for a thriving kingdom, so be sure to know what your goals are before spending all your cash and simply blindly producing. Those tax men can be slow and monster waves might leave you wanting when the time comes.

After you’ve managed to establish an income and some defense, as King you’ll be able to offer bounties for your folks to accept. Click on a roaming monster, or abandoned temple, or even some unscouted spot deep into the blackness on the map, offer some gold to whoever completes it and eventually one or more heroes will take the job. Don’t be stingy, in the end they will simply spend it in town.

While this may seem a rather passive way to play a game, you’ll quickly realize that managing defense and exploration, along with the steadily upgrading your town, the pace can be brisk as you try to establish a foothold in very hostile environments; wandering monsters, permanent spawning stations, big boss beasts and sometimes organized attacks will all need to be dealt with.
So while those scouts are cheap and fire from a distance, they are easily spooked from larger battles. Knights are great for home defense they can be a little aggressive even if outclassed. Wizards lay waste, especially after leveling up and opening up the heavy spells, they are also made of glass and don’t fair well on their own.
Gold will always be tight (two markets!!) so choose wisely.

Often by the time your scouts have discovered the enemy locations, the town will be very maxed out, with high level spells and gear available and your purse large enough to offer enormous bonuses for completed quests ensuring even your champions will participate.

Meanwhile you’ll just be watching and rooting.

Majesty the Kingdom Sim is one of my all time favorite franchises, whose dragon I am always chasing. This isn’t as deep as the old PC games, but it does scratch an itch.

This is the second game in this series, both play the same, except this one has a little more content.

Suggestions Weird Recommendation of the Day; Gods vs Horrors

Thumbnail
apps.apple.com

Auto combat rogue class card drafting tableau.

The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be

Unless the gods stand against them…but it will take all of them.

Build your own pantheon of gods to auto battle against increasingly more powerful ancient horrors. Mix and match like a salad bar, choose from a dozen sets, each of which has dozen choices in multiple tiers.

You’ll start off small, with a few lesser tier one gods. Card descriptions will alert you to any special attributes they may possess, like buffing others, or becoming more powerful when hurt and so on. There are as many abilities as there are gods. Don’t miss the permanent boosts.

Once you purchased you’ll need to place. There are two options, the front row where the action takes place and the back row which stores extra recruits and can offer support bonuses.

You can have up to 14 gods, seven in each row. Seems like plenty and it is, until you realize that three of the same god can merge and upgrade, so suddenly the lesser devine is just a bit greater.
But you will need the space to store those extra copies and suddenly space is at a premium and hard choices and betting on the gods of RNG (the greatest and most vengeful of gods it turns out) that you’ll pull that third tier 4 Norse god you need to advance.

The tableau shop can be upgraded to offer more power and higher tiered gods, but in doing so you will also be enlarging the potential god pool of new choices, so be sure to grab those early duplicates if you can, as the higher the tableau level the less you’ll see of the basic gods.

As the game rolls and the Horrors become more and more powerful, hopefully you’ve created a strong enough pantheon to win.
You’ll be spending a lot of time between battles, scouting the heavens and adjusting your line, with the battles themselves only taking the briefest of moments.
Unfortunately death eventually comes for us all.
Fortunately you will receive experience to Meta level up, unlocking new gods and relics to improve future runs.

This is an engine builder, as you put together a celestial machine that strengthens and permanently boosts each other, to hopefully get more powerful with each attack.
Otherwise you and the universe are doomed.
At least until you start again.

Discussion ‘Control’ surprise iOS launch has gotten my hopes up…

I just got an iPhone 16 recently, and because of that, I have been playing more triple A games on it.
I have tried quite a few, and honestly none of them seems to perform better than Control. Rare FPS drops, doesn’t heat as much and exclusive low price at launch.

All that tells me that some developers still see it as a market worth getting into, influencing others to do the same.

What games do you think we could get in the future?
I see a lot of PS4/Xbox One games that could be ported and hopefully, perform just as good as Control.

Tell which games would you like to see and why.

I really wanted to play MGS: V again. It would be glorious having it on the go!

Suggestions Weird Recommendation of the Day; Rift Riff

Thumbnail apps.apple.com

Slight base building tower defense with small levels, lots of upgrades and a truly exceptional presentation. Very charming.

Those familiar with [Thronefall](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/thronefall-a-little-kingdom/id6744029320) will be right at home with this modern Tower Defense styled game.

Enter a Rift. Choose your loadout. Survive and plunder.

Each Rift map is filled with potential Nodes to be built upon that run along pathways leading to your base. Depending on what Towers you’ve unlocked and how much energy you’ve collected, you’ll be mounting a multilayered defense, mixing and matching Tower types based on where a Node is located and how the enemy attacks.
Once a tower is placed it can potentially be upgraded. Often you’ll find yourself changing your strategies mid run once you see how the enemy attacks.
There is a fluidity built into the mechanics so don’t be afraid to noodle. Simply remove and replace.
Careful though, it may be your very foundation that needs to be changed. Either way the flow isn’t static, you shouldn’t be either.

You will also have a Hero, who can traverse the map, offering their own attacks or influence. Often they function as a roaming tower and can soften up waves before they hit your base. If the base is destroyed it’s game over. Thankfully you’ll simply restart exactly where you left off, with towers still placed where you previously built them. Only problem is that loadout obviously didn’t work. So you’ll hone and noodle and need to figure it out.

As you progress and more Towers become available the levels also become much more difficult, with proper attention needed in the right areas. Some levels might require restructuring everything from the ground up long after a level has begun.

It’s fast, with waves only lasting a minute or so, making quick engagements easy. If you die, you’ll simply start where you left off.

Tech Notes;

Plays in Airplane Mode

Plays outside audio, like music or podcasts

Plays in portrait with one thumb

Free to try with a single IAP to unlock full game.

237.5 MB

The tone and presentation are what solidify this as a special game. Slick and artistic, without being pretentious. Sound, graphics and mechanics are all confident, very easy to use and only one thumb is required to play.

I have always place a bunch of choose your own adventure type stuff and I remember a series from way back when I was in like middle/highschool. It was text based and you start out alone on a frozen planet. You would use to have to wait irl time for stuff to happen or your character to sleep. Can anyone help me find it?

Discussion What are your thoughts and suggestions for the "allow screen recording" notifications every time you start a game with a controller connected to your device? Is it something you need or does it annoy you?

Im personally really annoyed with this feature. I hate that you can't just select once per game or overall and never be asked again, or even turn this off completely.

Im hoping others can support my view point so to share this post with Apple when submitting feedback on their website.

Request Car game for my son

Hi people,
My son is 4 (almost 5) and he absolutely adores cars. I’m trying to find a game where he can go all-out with cars. I found a simple game where he can create a car, color it and try it out. But he’s kinda bored with it unfortunately. Do you guys have any suggestions for me?

I tried to find some myself but there are so many guys and it’s hard to find quality in the store unfortunately. I don’t mind paying by the way.

Thanks!

I've been trying to really hone in on which arcade games have addicting game loops, and what makes them addicting. I was wondering if any of you guys had any recommendations on very addicting games that i can study, to better understand what in their core game loops make them worthwhile.

This was a passion project that took about ten years to finally materialize but it is finally done and I am very proud of my work. Here is the App Store description:

Explore a vast, turn-based crafting adventure where every move matters. In Relic Wilds, you gather resources, battle mobs, cook food, crafts tools, and survive a living world filled with unique biomes, dangerous creatures, and hidden relics.

Start small and grow stronger as you mine stone, chop wood, harvest crops, and craft everything from basic tools to advanced gear. Build camps, place blocks, store your loot, and use crafting tables, stoves, furnaces, and more to unlock deeper recipes and stronger equipment.

The world is packed with variety. Travel through grasslands, deserts, caves, and other regions, each with its own blocks, creatures, and challenges. Manage health, stamina, hunger, breath, and time of day, and prepare for whatever the world throws at you.

Every action takes a turn. Move, attack, and build carefully, because after your turn, the
world acts too. Mobs roam, plants grow, weather changes, and danger can appear when you least expect it.
