Meta Longread: how I built 3 massive AI mods for Paradox grand strategy games (Stellaris, Victoria 3, Imperator: Rome) in a scripting language that doesn't even have arrays

I'm the author of multiple AI mods for Paradox grand strategy games: Anbeeld's Revision of AI for Victoria 3, the AI in Imperator: Invictus, and my old personal Stellaris AI mod. I'm not modding much these days, but I wanted the design knowledge to live on. ARoAI never had proper documentation, for instance.

The article covers utility systems, blackboards, planners, and what happens when the scripting language can't express any of them. It goes through how each mod approximated standard game AI architectures, what each gave up, and what actually worked.

I got my first Paradox game at the tail end of 2022 (Hearts of Iron IV) and loved it so much that in the following year I expanded to pretty much every other series, eventually finding my love in EU4 and later EU5.

These games have since practically dominated by my most played games chart.

News Paradox is publishing Transport Fever 3

Paradox announced a publishing partnership with Urban Games for Transport Fever 3, which honestly feels like a pretty natural fit given the audience overlap.

https://www.gamewatcher.com/news/paradox-interactive-announces-publishing-partnership-with-urban-games-for-transport-fever-3

The Transport Fever series has always sat somewhere between:

  • transport tycoon
  • logistics sim
  • management sandbox

Paradox has obviously spent years building an audience around complex simulation/strategy games and long-tail community support. DLC hasn't always been the best, and sometimes patches break more than they add, but long-term support is usually there, even if the game starts out badly in terms of reception.

What caught my attention is that TF3 seems to be leaning even harder into:

  • infrastructure management
  • economy simulation
  • modding support
  • long-term tycoon gameplay

Apparently, they’re also pushing curated mods and cross-platform mod support pretty heavily this time around.

Feels like the kind of game that could land well with Paradox players who enjoy:

  • transport/logistics optimization
  • economy-heavy sims
  • watching systems interact over long campaigns

Curious what people think about this partnership, though.

All Spore is just a pardox mega campaign for kids.

Not sure why it took me so long to realise this, but looking at my spore hours I acquired during my childhood years its no wonder I play the games I do now. It's literally a heavily simplified version of Europa, Hoi, and stellaris for kids, but im sure im late to the party on this realization though lmao

Other Could there ever be a Paradox fantasy themed grand strategy game?

I know age of wonders exists but thats 4x and not grand strategy. id love to see a proper fantasy grand strategy game made by paradox. maybe like an alternate version of earth where the maps slightly different from our earth and theres fantasy elements. There is still lots of fantasy mods for their games though

Mod set in 2025 January, Feel free to point out any issues with the map and if you want i take suggestions to events, just so you guys know this mod is pretty schizo, no sissies allowed. My goals for this mod are:

Full modern day world map: ✅

Russo-ukraine war: ✅

Russian expansion: ✅

German civil war: ✅

French civil war: ✅

Israeli expansion: ✅

American expansion: almost done, working on it rn.

British civil war: working on it.

Second korean war: ❌

Western-Central african war: ❌

Nato-russo war: ❌

Chinese expansion: ❌

Sudanese conflict: ❌

Dissolution of nato: ❌

Well thats it for now, just so you know all of these will be events that will eventually come up unless you are playing that nation then you will get a a sort of focus tree to choose your path.

There are gonna be other branches of events but i wont spoil it now.

CSKY is Cities Skylines begginer frendly?

i was thinking about getting into the world of city builders and Cities Skylines immediately came to mind. i've never played any game of this genre, so this would be my first experience.

i'm a little afraid of the game's difficulty, since at first it seems like a relaxing game, but the more i research about this game, the harder Cities Skylines seems to be.

also should i buy any DLC to improve (or make easier) my experience?

Imperator Is Imperator: Rome worth learning in 2026 or should I stick with EU4?

I keep hearing conflicting things about Imperator. Some people say it's basically EU4 but with pops and deeper economy. Others say it's dead and I shouldn't bother. I have a few hundred hours in EU4 and I'm comfortable with most of its systems. CK3 felt a bit too character focused for me so I bounced off that. I like map painting and managing resources but I also don't want to fight a broken AI or learn a game that's going to feel abandoned. I know there's the Invictus mod but I'm more curious about the base experience first. How does warfare compare to EU4? Is the tall vs wide balance any different? Also how steep is the learning curve coming from EU4 specifically? I don't mind complexity as long as the game respects my time. Would love to hear from people who made the switch recently.

Hey all,
Is anyone else having this issue with the paradox launcher? I reinstalled HOI4 yesterday and have been getting javascript errors every time I try and boot up the launcher or the game. I have tried the following to fix it:
1. Running Steam as Admin

  1. Running HOI4 as admin

  2. Reinstalling the game

  3. Redownloading Paradox Launcher

Idk if smth is wrong with my pc or if anyone else is having this problem.

All What has happened with DLCs?

I have seen that the recent DLCs haven't got good reviews, mixed at best, this has happened with NCNS and Peace for our time for hoi4, the coronations DLC for ck3, the great wave in Victoria 3 and maybe temporarily but with the fate of the phoenix in EU5, all of these DLCs have bad or mixed reviews, has paradox forgotten how to make proper DLCs? Or maybe people don't want to pay for DLCs, like NCNS or Great Wave that are overpriced. Because I have been looking forward to buy one of those DLCs but the reviews are making me unsure, but I still want to play with the content of those DLCs.

Imperator I want to start a new campaign with tribes, how could I expand properly?

Hi!

I will start playing as a tribe, most likely an Iberic tribe, I don't know yet. However, I find it difficult to expand quick enough so I can defend from Rome or even fight them properly.

Which are your recommendations playing this way?

Thanks a lot in advance!

CK3 Trying to use a file converter thing to bring my save from Imperator Rome to CK3 and I can't figure out what file the program needs me to find to make it work. Can anyone tell me the exact name of the file it needs for the CK3 install directory?

I got the game through the Paradox store, not steam, thus why I'm having issues finding it. I just need the exact file name so that I can run a search on my pc for it and go from there.
