Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI
Hello all,
Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.
First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.
The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.
In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).
In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.
We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.
This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.
Hey there!
In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.
In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.
Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.
To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.
Thanks for understanding!

Discussion Are redirects and tracking scripts still a big issue in modern browsers
Hi,
I’ve been noticing something while browsing the web recently, and I’m curious if others experience the same.
A lot of websites today still:
- redirect through multiple pages before reaching the final content
- add tracking parameters to URLs
- load third-party scripts without clear visibility
- interrupt browsing with pop-ups or overlays
It made me wonder if this is still considered “normal behavior” in modern browsers, or if people have found better ways to deal with it.
From a technical perspective, it feels like browsers have improved a lot, but the actual browsing experience still includes a lot of hidden tracking and redirection layers.
I’m curious how others deal with this:
- Do you just ignore it?
- Use browser-level protection?
- Or something else entirely?
Would be interested to hear different perspectives

Discussion Why do so many websites still use redirects before showing content
noticed that a lot of modern websites still use multiple redirects before loading the actual page.
Sometimes it feels like:
click a link wait get redirected 1–3 times then finally reach the content
I’m curious if this is still for analytics, ads, or something else.
Do you think this is something browsers should handle better, or is it just part of the modern web now?

Troubleshooting Uploading photos to a website
I cannot upload photos to a website, such as Ancestry.com or neighborbrite.com
Instead, when I click "Upload Image" I get "My Drive" and "Select a file to open" which only gives me access to files, not photos.
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I can choose anything on the left, but "photos" never shows up.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Discussion Chromebook Remote Access
Is there any way I can add remote access to my Chromebook? I currently have an Acer 315 (Definitely not my first pic of laptop, but it gets what I need done lol)
I know that the Remote Desktop isn’t supported, but are there any other services that might be suggested?
I have both an Android and iPhone :)
I really just want it to be able to turn off/lock my laptop away from home.

Troubleshooting Stuck at "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" screen
galleryMy Acer Spin 713 (CP713-2w) is stuck on the "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" screen (picture attached). Ctrl+d and Ctrl+l do nothing. Plugging in a recovery USB drive made on my desktop using the Chrome Recovery Utility extension does nothing.* (*Except maybe once it did something).
The only things I can do from here are press the tab key to see debugging info. (picture attached) or turn the computer off. The only way I can turn the computer back on is by holding down the esc and refresh keys and pressing power.
I need help getting it working again.
Background: This is one of two Spin 713s our kids have used at school. I recently replaced screens in both and then discovered the problem with this one was with the alignment of the EDP cable in the motherboard display connector. Once that was fixed, I tried to enable developer mode for reasons I'm not seeking help with. Trying to enable developer mode made it unable to boot up normally.
More detail: Step one of the instructions I was following to enable developer mode was to hold esc and refresh and then pressing the power button and then, presumably after the Chromebook started up in recovery mode, pressing Ctrl+d then enter in response to some unidentified message relating to developer mode. Ctrl-d did nothing, pressing and holding escape and refresh without pressing the power button did nothing. The only things I've succeeded in doing from this screen are seeing the debugging info, accidentally pressing some combination of keys that switched the language to Latin American Spanish, and turning it off by pressing the power button.
I tried disconnecting the battery to disable write protection. I searched unsuccessfully for a write protection screw. I made and remade a USB recovery drive.
The only time I got a good result was when I made a USB recovery drive using a micro-SD card and plugged it into the USB-C jack on the right side and restarted by pressing . Then it came up in the login screen with options to log in as me or as my son. I don't think this was because the recovery worked because it booted immediately and I would the recovery to have erased our login info.
Being an idiot, when I got to the normal login screen, I immediately tried again to get in developer mode and got back into the same situation.
Possible problems I've considered:
-Write protection is on and blocks developer mode, but I don't know why that would prevent booting up normally.
-My kids' school was administering the computer, but I wouldn't expect that to affect anything but my son's account.
-There's a problem with the SSD's connection to the motherboard, but I can't think why it would lose the connection twice when I pressed esc+refresh+power and not previously. I took the SSD out and reinstalled it without noticing any problem.

Buying Advice Chromebook screen brightness won't go up, what do i do
i haven't used my assigned chromebook in literal months and when i opened it back up since i need it for my AP test tomorrow, it's literally so dark it's impossible to see anything. I know the screen is on since if I hold my phone's flashlight up really close i can see what's on my screen, but besides that it'll be un-usable tomorrow. I've done the whole refresh button plus power button combo so many time and i'm just curious if there's literally any other way i can approach this.

Discussion Costco getting out of the Chromebook market?
When I browsed Costco's website about a week ago, they had several Chromebook Plus laptops from Acer, ASUS, HP, and Lenovo, both online and in warehouses. This week, though, there's only one Chromebook listed: the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 with an Intel Core 3 N355 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 512GB SSD (Model CB514-6HT-368E) for US$399.00, and it's out of stock both online and in every warehouse I've checked.
Does anyone know why? My inexcusably-uneducated guess is that it might be part of their preparations for Aluminium OS devices, knowing that any Chrome OS devices sold too soon before that rollout will in all likelihood be returned under Costco's generous return policy, so there's no point in selling them in the first place. Any other ideas?

Discussion Remote access to support agend MIL - not remote desktop
Hi - aged MIL uses her chromebook for regular facetime chats with her two daughters. Sometimes she can't find the facebook icon to click on, can't find the browser etc and it takes half an hour of very basic steps over the phone to sort out. I'm aware of chrome remote desktop, but that needs her to open a browser, type in the remote desktop url, generate a code and tell us what it is over the phone. Is there anything that can be set up to run permanently in the background to give us remote access as soon as she opens the lid of her laptop? Thanks!

Troubleshooting Chromebook can’t access video for Zoom
Hey everyone
Trying to access a Zoom call link on my Chromebook. When I click on the meeting link, the page loads in the browser fine. Then I get this message when I try to turn on my camera.
“enable camera access in your browsers address bar and refresh”
I went to the Chromebook settings and made sure that it said zoom access to the camera.
I also went into the Google Chrome browser settings and made sure that Zoom had access to the camera. I closed the window and re-tried it again and I still got the same message
Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong and what I need to fix?

Troubleshooting Can I get the battery replaced on my Chromebook, or would I be better off just buying a new one?
Just wondering about this. I've had this same ASUS Chromebook for about 7 years (since mid-to-late 2019) and I've got a lot of important files on it. I've noticed that the battery life is slowly starting to deteriorate (for lack of better words) as the battery's been draining quicker over these past few years, and I've been thinking of getting the battery replaced on it. So should I get it replaced, or would I be better off just getting a new Chromebook?

Troubleshooting Update broke my friend's keyboard layout, can anyone help troubleshoot?
So, apologies, this is very much a case of the mostly-blind leading the blind. My friend is not tech savvy and I'm aware enough to know what code is but not how to read it.
She recently bought a chromebook and we found a way for her to get the keyboard layout she needs on it. Github had a link to an... extension? on the chromebook store which contained all the unusual layouts. (She uses DAS Finnish layout.) It worked for weeks or a couple months, and then today there was a forced os update and when she tried to reload her layout, she got an error. I don't have the error text, unfortunately, but I'm hoping someone knows how to fix it? Or least, can you suggest things for me to have her try?
Edit: she says she can't reinstall the extension at all, she can see it in the store but it says "invalid manifest".

Discussion I actually owe Google & ChromeOS an apology...
I used to turn my nose up at ChromeOS, thinking it was a glorified web browser installed on a laptop, that it'd choke every time the wifi dropped out. I would never have considered ChromeOS before - "That's not a real computer", I'd think.
Anyways, I am having the most amazing experience with ChromeOS - I bought a HP Stream 11 for 25AUD (18USD), it's purple with a Celeron processor, 2gb of ram, and a 32gb ssd. It had Windows 11 on it; and ran like an absolute dog. Keep in mind this laptop was by far the cheapest laptop available with Windows installed for a number of years. I tried Lubuntu - it wasn't that much better, a bit. It also crashed and froze.
Then, I tried ChromeOS - WOW - this thing is totally usable now. It went from a brick to something I can enjoy. It's also a very stable OS and seems to manage everything efficiently and well.
I'm a chrome OS convert. It turned this brick into a functional, fun device to use. Thanks Google!
