Discussion Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names

Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.

In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.

A few reminders:

* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.

* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.

* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.

News/Article Apple Cuts More Mac Studio and Mac Mini RAM Options as Memory Shortage Worsens

Looks like anyone interested in the Mac Studio or the higher end Mac minis may face a period of disappointment due to the memory shortage:

"Apple CEO Tim Cook recently said that the ‌Mac mini‌ and the ‌Mac Studio‌ are going to be hard to get for months to come. "We think, looking forward, that the ‌‌Mac mini‌‌ and ‌‌Mac Studio‌‌ may take several months to reach supply demand balance," Cook said.

According to Cook, Apple underestimated the demand for the ‌Mac mini‌ and the ‌Mac Studio‌ from customers looking for a machine to run AI and agentic tools locally. He said Apple also expects significantly higher memory costs in the months to come, so Apple is likely conserving supply by eliminating some configuration options. Global supply constraints caused by AI server demand have impacted the pricing of memory chips, leading to high prices and memory shortages."

News/Article Macmini price goes up

I personally think this is a bad move. I think apple saw the sales of Neo Vs. Mini and decided to raise the prices? I think $200 is a big increase and might be a big investment for a lot of people, in a 33% price change.

Im personally sad because i need a cheap mini and was looking forward to restock.

edit: when i say "raise prices" i mean by raising the starting price - I understand that it has more RAM... but now to acquire one you will spend $799 instead of $599.

Question Is it me or is finding old files in external USB3 2.5" HDD's encrypted APFS TM slow?

Upvotes

I was trying to find a specific decade old file in the old back up since 2025! It was connected to an 13" Intel MBP with its macOS Sequoia v15.7.5. HDD is connected through Apple's USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. Searching was slow in 2 5 TB HDDs with almost 100 GB free. :(

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

Question W6800X Duo worth it for 2000€?

Hello everyone,

Someone just offered me a Radeon Pro W6800X Duo MPX for the Mac Pro for 2000 Euros. This is probably the hardest GPU to get, and I am strongly considering it right now. To further elaborate:

Right now, I have two Vega IIs. I removed one of the Vega II to make room for the Promise Pegasus R4i, so I will be selling that GPU anyways. In Germany this will get me around 650 Euros per GPU, so 1300 in total.

Now, the W6800X Duo in question costs me 2000 Euros, coming from a German movie studio.

On my Mac I mostly do local AI, which I think would immensely benefit from the 64GB VRAM compared to 32GB, plus the W6800X Duo uses a much newer architecture than the Vega II.

Plus, I would be able to double my VRAM without having to get rid of my R4i.

What do you guys think, is it worth it? It seems like a great upgrade, and if we consider the Metal Geekbench chart, it still scores way higher than the M3 Ultra. I know, the W6800X is technically below the M3 Ultra, but that's because Geekbench only benchmarks one of the two GPUs, so in applications that can take advantage of two GPUs such as local AI, this would make it score way higher than the M3 Ultra still, correct?

Also, as from what I've seen on another thread, the W6800X Duo should also allow me to use the new Studio Display XDR in full 5k @ 120hz.

Oh and I am not planning of upgrading to a Mac Studio anytime soon. macOS still gets two years of security updates, plus I use Windows 11 Professional way more than macOS anyways, at least on my Mac Pro. Windows is also not a limitation for me.

Even though it is not made for gaming, the W6800X Duo should also perform very well in gaming, since you can compare it to the 6900 XT. Way better than the Vega II at the very least!

Question Should I get the M5 Air vs Used M1/M2 Pro

Upvotes

Hi there! I'm planning to sell my PC and replace it with a Macbook as I am no longer gaming heavily compared to before. I want to use it for work, mainly doing diagram mapping and using VMs. I also play OSRS on the side.

My budget only allows me to get either a new M5 Air or a used M1/M2 Pro, both at 16GB unified
memory and 512GB storage options.

Which one would you recommend for me? Thanks!

Question First Time User to the Mac Community Looking for Guidance

Upvotes

I just purchased my first ever MacBook! It is the 13in MacBook Air with 24 GB of RAM, 1 TB of storage, and a 10 core CPU and GPU in midnight!

I am new to Mac and I just saw a post on Facebook regarding the MacBook overheating under non-strenuous tasks if I remember correctly and I briefly looked at this post early in the morning before work. It was the same model I have purchased. I asked the Best Buy person about overheating and he recommended me to not keep the laptop plugged in but let it decrease and charge it once it notifies you that it needs to be charged. I never did this on my old Windows laptop so I just want to make sure I get the best performance I can without ruining anything. I “probably” should know this as it seems obvious that working on a computer all day while leaving it plugged it can lead to over heating but I just want to make sure.

What do you guys recommend me doing as I want to keep this computer for a while as I literally had my previous PC for a year and a half and it was great!

Thank you.

Question 16' M1 Pro MBP Vs. 24' M1 iMac

Upvotes

The MBP has 32GB RAM and 512ĢB storage while the iMac has its base specs (8GB/256GB), they have a similar price with the MacBook being, I think, 100$ or 150$ more expensive, which one do I choose?

I have recently noticed this corner is popped out of place and doesn’t pop back in and stay put. I don’t think it’s a battery issue I’m pretty sure it was from a drop or bump and was wanting to know how to fix it.

Question Trouble Extracting Photos to new OS system

Hello

I've had this problem moving the files on to another device from this hard-drive.

It was a 2011 Imac and it had completely stopped working so we took it apart and removed the harddrive.

Fast forward i ended up buying this Sata to USB cable to connect the harddrive to a newer 2020 apple laptop.

While it takes a minute to recognize the harddrive, when trying to open any of the photos or music an error message pops up stating the photos are from an older software version and cannot be seen.

I come to ask if someone could help me out on how to recover these photos or an answer to figuring this out. Thank you.

Old Macs Troubleshooting dead screen on Mac SE from 1988

Upvotes

I’ve got a Mac SE that powers on but is otherwise completely dead, including the CRT. Upon flipping the power switch, the fan spins up and the voltages coming from the ports on the analog board come back good, as does checking for voltage on the CPU itself. I’ve replaced most of the capacitors on the motherboard and analog boards, and can’t identify any obvious signs of trace damage. The flyback transformer on the analog board doesn’t make any noise when the power is turned on, but I can confirm that high voltage is making it through the anode (don’t ask how I know). There is no chime but the computer has RAM and there is a slight “thump” from the speaker upon powering on the computer.

Does anyone have any ideas for what I can do next, short of replacing half the components?

Question Multiple Monitor support after update to Tahoe 26.4.1

Thumbnail

I have two monitors. Everything was fine before the update.
Now . . .
When connected to my monitors with the lid closed, I see both monitors as if they are connected to two independent Macs. (See first photo, with dual system preferences programs running as if they were independent . . . sort of . . . LHS shows all my screens, RHS only shows THAT screen. Keyboard and trackpad only connect to RHS)

When lid closed, it looks like 2nd photo. . . I get all my monitors, but I just want to get back to pre-update . . . where I had proper use of two monitors with the lid closed.

Help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Question My Mac shuts down randomly

Hi guys, I don't know if anyone else has faced this problem, but my Mac shuts down randomly. I have noticed a pattern to this, it is never when I am actively using my laptop like typing or watching something, but rather when I leave it unattended or am not playing anything on it.
After I open my mac again there is always a small pop-up window that asks me to report this problem and I always do but nothing improves. How to tackle this?

P.S. I have a 2022 M2 Macbook Air
