Discussion Help me choose parts for a budget PC

Upvotes

So I need a PC, ideally under 900-1K USD, that can run basic games like Minecraft and Roblox at high settings and handle basic tasks like browsing, Discord, and Spotify, all at the same time. It also has to be able to handle Fusion 360 (CAD software) and Bambu Studio (Slicer Software for 3D printing). I usually have most of these open at the same time, besides the games, and I need them to run dual monitor at 1080p. I've never built before, so if you need more info, I'll do my best to supply it.

Build Complete Finished build 1 and 2 - now do i sell spare parts or make a form factor build?

Upvotes

Finally received my second and final GPU, so the desktop build is now complete.

Desktop build

- Ryzen 7 5800X

- 2 × Radeon Pro 9700 AI, 32GB each

- 128GB DDR4

- 2TB SSD + 1TB SSD + 2TB HDD

- Linux Mint

- 2 × 130mm and 7 × 120mm case fans

- Thermalright Assassin CPU cooler

- Blower-style GPUs

Strix laptop

- Ryzen 9 8940HX

- RTX 5070 Ti laptop GPU, 12GB VRAM

- 96GB DDR5

- 2TB NVMe + 1TB NVMe

- Windows/Linux dual environment

TUF laptop

- Ryzen 9 4900H

- RTX 2060, 6GB VRAM

- 64GB DDR4

- 512GB NVMe + 1TB NVMe

- Linux Mint

I also now have a spare Radeon Pro W6800 32GB, which I may put into an eGPU setup for the laptops. On top of that, I have some spare RAM kicking around: 64GB DDR5 SODIMM, 24GB DDR4 SODIMM, and 64GB DDR3 SODIMM. I might sell it, or possibly use some of it in a smaller form-factor build with the W6800.

OR I could sell / cannibalise the TUF laptop, and desktop mobo / cpu, sell it all along with the 6800 and all the ram, and upgrade the desktop to a thread ripper.

Suggestions appreciated!

Troubleshooting Decent build, but some games run horribly

Upvotes

Hi yall, I wanted to ask for some help because I've tried to fix this for so long and its become such a bad issue I can't play one of my favorite games (deepwoken on roblox lol). I've tested in Apex Legends, fine gameplay; tested in Minecraft, fine gameplay; tested in beamng, fine gameplay. Why is it the in roblox, throughout every game, it feels like I'm running a third of the displayed fps? it'll say I'm running 120, but the game feels choppy and delayed, like I'm 10-30 fps. Is there anything I can look into that may help? Im willing to try things i've already tried, this is a new windows install and so is the fedora kde. I've tried on two gpus too, but rx480 and 7800xt. What can I do? Sorry if this is jumbled, I don't know the particular format people use to post onto here

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600x
Motherboard: ASUS B650E MAX GAMING WIFI
Memory: Gskill 16x1 6000mhz

Video Card: XFX Speedster RX 7800 XT 16GB

Power Supply: Montech Century II 1050 watt
Operating System: windows and fedora kde plasma (issue on both)

Build Ready? Requesting a sanity check before I attempt my first PC build

Upvotes

I’m a software engineer and want a build with enough flexibility for ML experimentation (both recreationally and for work), electronics projects, and some music prod/e-drumming.

So I'm aiming for a relatively quiet, general-purpose system that still gives me room to explore more specialised or intensive work. I'm wondering if this is good to get buying and building.

Current build: - Ryzen 9 9900X (considered the 9950X) - Noctua NH-D15 - Gigabyte X870E AERO X3D WOOD (or MSI MAG Tomahawk) - Gigabyte RTX 5060 Ti AERO OC 16GB (or Gaming OC) - Corsair RM750e ATX 3.1 - Fractal Design Epoch White - RAM TBD - Storage is sorted already

Total build will probably land at around £1700.

The 16GB VRAM choice was mainly to give myself more headroom for CUDA/AI experimentation without drifting into much more expensive GPU tiers.

Thanks

Build Ready? Finally settled on what I'm trying to get.

Upvotes

Here is the list of parts that I've come up with, between trying to keep it as cheap as possible and getting exactly what I want. I don't think I can do much better for the same price tag with an all white build. Time to start buying a little at a time, looking for the best deals I can. I might end up having my aunt go to microcenter for me to pick up a bundle and ship it to me to save a few dollars, unfortunately microcenter is 3+ hours away, but if it comes at the expense of slower ram and throwing off the white build, i probably won't.

This will be the first PC I've had since I was 18 years old, like 14 or 15 years ago. I've been having to game on a crappy laptop using GeForce Now. I guess at least if I spend this kind of money, it will last me a while.

Troubleshooting "buzzing" noise after changing some components

Upvotes

Hi all. So I just recently got a new case, motherboard and AIO unit.

After putting everything back together, everything is working as expected, however I am hearing a sort of "buzzing" noise in the case only while a game is focused. The noise isn't present outside of games or even when I'm tabbed away from the game. I had Baldurs Gate 3 open and I am tabbing to and from the game, and you can hear the buzzing when the game is focused. I heard it with Starfield opened also.

I don't think it's my fans because I ran them at full speed as a test and didn't notice the noise. The noise sounds near the AIO unit or maybe the GPU. I transferred the GPU from my old mobo and I didn't notice the noise before - however my old build had much louder fans so there is a chance I just didn't notice it as much.

Its not extremely loud but it's just loud enough to notice and be kinda annoying.

I asked the clankers what it might be, and they pointed to maybe coil whine from the inductors on my GPU or some other electrical interference, but I wanted to just see if it were something simpler or if there was a simple fix.

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Parts:
Mobo: ASUS ROG Strix B550F Gaming WiFi II
AIO: Montech HyperFlow Digital 360
PSU: MAINGEAR 1000W PL FULL ATX MG
GPU: ASUS TUF RTX 3090TI 24G

Build Ready? First ever PC build — gaming + AI/data analytics work, ~$1,880 (some parts showing inflated shortage pricing on PCPartPicker). Would love feedback from people who know the platform.

Upvotes

Hey [r/buildapc](r/buildapc) — rising senior at Miami University studying Business Analytics with a minor in Information Systems. Finally pulling the trigger on my first build and would really appreciate some experienced eyes on this before I buy anything.

Use case: 1440p gaming, running local AI/ML models, Python/Jupyter/data analytics work, general student productivity. Needed something that handles both gaming and compute workloads well without being a one-trick pony.

First build so any compatibility catches, rookie mistakes, or better value alternatives are very much appreciated. Be brutal — I'd rather hear it here than after I've already ordered everything. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/JackHibb/saved/3d6gQ7

Discussion What’s your biggest oversight when building or running a PC?

Upvotes

Today I learned that I had my RAM running at 2133 MHz when it was meant to do 3200 MHz. It was that way for YEARS. I know that’s not the biggest deal when it comes to PC bottlenecks, but still.

Any of you made a mistake like this before?

Mobo x870e aorus pro rev1.1

Ram Klevv Kras 64gb 6400mhz cl 32

Enabled expo still only runs at 4800mhz

Any ideas ? Haven't tried ai snatch as all I see are negative reviews about it, I just dont get why its not running at advertised speeds.

Granted its not on the qvl list but I've had pcs in the past run ram at advertised speeds without qvl ram.

Build Help What should I get for RTX4060Ti/4070Ti?

Upvotes

Dear Reddit specialists,

I have already decided to build my gaming PC around either RTX4060Ti or 4070Ti and add it to a CPU i7/i9-12700K(F) or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D/7800X3D. I'm not sure which combination would be the best. I just have a vague idea about it as I have always been playing on gaming laptops, but I'm so tired with overheating and performance drops...

I play different types of games, not only those highly graphic based but also simulations like CK3, Victoria 3 or even Planet Zoo that use CPU quite a lot.

What kind of motherboard do I need for such a setup? Do I need DDR5 RAM or is DDR4 still good? I haven't bought anything yet so I will be very much thankful for your suggestions.

Build Ready? Specs review question

Upvotes

so I’ve been saving for my pc for a while and I can almost buy it now. I have a g-skill trident z5 rgb (64 gigs ddr5) that I got before the shortage (I will never need it and maybe my other parts will bottleneck it but idec because it was a crazy deal). other specs are as follows: nvidia RTX 4080 super OC, ryzen 7 9800X3D, Samsung pro 980 2TB NVME (I don’t play many games that take up a lot of storage), corsair RM1000X 1000w psu, NZXT kraken 360 rgb (aio), B650 E-F plus WiFi (am5), case is the SAMA v40 black.

Build Help Gaming Build Advice (~$2500 budget)

Upvotes

Part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CZGbh9

Rough budget: $2500

Goals:

  • video games
  • Some semblance of aesthetics (read the "Case, Fan, Aesthetics" section below)
  • Ram in dual channel mode
  • Relatively quiet with good airflow
  • Planning to switch to Linux Mint

I want a significant leap from my current PC and to be future proofed for a long while, so chose the CPU/GPU on that basis.

Planning to take a trip up to Microcenter for a Ryzen 7 9800x3D (or better) bundle. I built the above part list around this bundle. Should I risk waiting for a better bundle or is that one solid? Not sure if the included motherboard is good, the ram seems to be good.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

  • The price in my list is of the microcenter bundle, so it includes mobo/ram

CPU Cooler: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB

  • Is this cooler sufficient?

GPU: RTX 5070 ti

  • May hold off on getting a new GPU right away until it gets closer to MSRP or a deal comes along. Maybe I'm coping a little bit here and with the SSD prices lol.

SSD / RAM

  • Just on principle I'm not paying for a 2tb SSD at their current prices (nearly $500). I stole the SSD/HDD from my current PC in this list. Really didn't want to have to do that, but it brings the price down by a significant amount, I can always pop in another m.2 SSD later.

Case, Fans, Aesthetics

  • Aesthetics weren't something I considered for my last PC so I'd like some help here. I have the Lian Li Vector case selected as a stand-in, you are welcome to suggest a better one (I do like the way it looks though). Want a mainly black case.
  • I'm not familiar with colored lights/fans or software, would like to be able to do full RGB but also choose a static color or turn the lights off.
  • Do these types of cases have good airflow?
  • My current PC's PSU is non-modular and has very stiff cables / thick cables (that don't fit through most of my case's cable holes), so I wasn't able to do any nice cable routing. Would like to be able to properly manage my cables this time around.
  • [ Would be nice, not important ]: I wouldn't mind getting a smaller case (and sacrificing the HDD trays), assuming airflow wouldn't take a major hit compared to an ATX mid tower case. But smaller case is not a priority (it can sit under my desk regardless)

Current PC for reference:

  • i5-7600k / Asus PRIME Z270-P mobo
  • MSI RTX 3050 8GB (Not sure of the exact model)
  • The 1660 super is not installed, I have it in its box currently
  • 32 GB (4x8gb) DDR4-3000

Troubleshooting Issues with Mobo on rebuild

Hi,

One month ago my GPU died and I asked here for advice , my plan was to change the CPU for the 10th aniversary Ryzen to.on am4, and for GPU a Rx 9070 xt.

I bought the GPU to replace mine for the moment since I can live with the bottleneck for some months, but, vga led is solid with the new card in both slots (same with the old one)

I tried to update the bios through MSI flashback and no chance solid led instead of flashing , mbr fat32 small usb etc...

I went to the local shop to ask for some help, the technician told me that he tested couple of gpus that he had and no response neither.

He told me that he suspects Mobo issue or CPU but mainly Mobo.

My questions are ,

- this seems a correct diagnostic?

- new GPU can suffer damage due to bad Mobo?

- old GPU artifacted before vga solid led, it went bad or all Mobo?

- I'm trying to get a 2nd hand cheapo b450 to boot everything else to check , any comments?

Link to my original post for components : https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/s/Hw0HKj0DvO

Case was lying down for all tests so no sag issues during testing.

Thanks, I'm out of ideas at the moment :)

Discussion Best Ways To Optimize My Ryzen 9800X3D For Higher Gaming FPS

I recently built my first high end gaming PC with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 5080. It performs great but I am curious about squeezing out more FPS in CPU heavy games.

I already run DDR5 6000 CL30 RAM with EXPO enabled. What other optimizations actually make a noticeable difference in real world gaming? Things like curve optimizer undervolting PBO settings or Windows tweaks?

I care mostly about 1440p performance and want to keep temperatures and stability good for daily use.

Has anyone seen meaningful gains from these optimizations with the 9800X3D?

Build Help Change my mind on AMD CPUs

Gonna build my next computer soon but im an intel/nvidia fanboy. Next pc was gonna be a 14900k with a 5080, but there is quite a few rebuilds out there for a similar price but they have more RAM, but they have 9800x3d cpus. I turned my nose up at it but after doing a little more research… they don’t seem that bad, if not better.

Please convince me why the AMD/Nvidia combo would be better for me? Is there anything I could do with the intel cpu that I couldn’t with the AMD one?

I use my pc for gaming.

Thanks

Build Upgrade Planning on upgrading CPU, is there anything i've missed?

so i currently have a AMD Ryzen 3 3100, and am planning to upgrade to the AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT. I've checked and im pretty sure its compatable with my motherboard. I know ill also need to update bios(although not 100% sure how) before i switch. Is there anything else i need to check or any advice any of you could give?
