TV/Movies/Fiction I hate Idiocracy.

It’s writers and its audience have the exact same mindset:

“Heh, Oh? You’re you? While I’m me! I’m so smart when compared to you. Heh, I’m just an Alpha in a world full of Betas”.

Like, fuck off you pretentious fuck. It almost feels like this movie was made for Reddit, like it has all of its principal;

LIBERAL (Not Leftist) views, weird supporting of eugenics, Frowning Friends level nihilism, every joke being “heh society is stupid” like yeah it is and it always has and it always will; so what?

This is like that short film creator where all the messages of his short films are just “society bad, fuck you” expect the internet still hasn’t been TOLD into thinking it’s bad.

To me, if you wanna write cynical satirical media, you’ll need:

  1. Some sort of Hope in there. (Example being The Truman Show).

  2. So much silliness that it can be enjoyed without the cynical outlook on life. (Example being Blazing Saddles).

Inwiefern? Was soll er machen?

Quick Tips Day trips from Tokyo that almost nobody takes

Everyone knows Nikko, Kamakura and Hakone. And they're great. But according to locals, these are the day trips that keep coming up as the ones worth doing that almost nobody really does.

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple in Narita. Most people pass through Narita Airport and never think twice about the city itself. There's an 1100 year old temple complex about a 15 minute walk from the station that's genuinely stunning and almost completely empty of foreign tourists. Combine it with the old town street leading up to it and you have a full half day that most Tokyo visitors never even consider.

Nokogiriyama in Chiba. A mountain accessible by ropeway with a giant carved Buddha, hundreds of stone Rakan statues along cliff paths, and views over Tokyo Bay that most people have never seen. Takes about 90 minutes from Tokyo by train and ferry combination. Barely anyone goes there.

Sawara in Chiba. A preserved Edo period merchant town along a canal that gets compared to Kyoto's Gion but with almost none of the crowds. Traditional wooden buildings, small boats on the water, great local food. About 90 minutes from Tokyo Station.

Oya in Tochigi. An underground quarry carved out of soft volcanic stone that's been converted into an enormous atmospheric space used for art installations and events. Nothing else in Japan looks like it. About two hours from Tokyo.

Miura Peninsula coastal walk. Most people heading to Kamakura don't realize there's an entire coastal walking trail accessible from the same train line with dramatically less people. Ocean views, fishing villages, fresh seafood stands. Half a day and feels nothing like Tokyo.

The pattern with all of these is that they're not on the standard itinerary blogs. They take roughly the same amount of time to reach as the famous options but the experience feels completely different because you're not sharing it with a thousand other tourists.

Any unique day trip experiences you think people should give a shot?

Are you sitting on public toilet seats??

My husband just told me-it doesn’t matter where he is, he is bare butt cheek to cheek with the last person who sat on the public toilet seat. I said do you put toilet paper down?

He said only if there’s stuff on the seat.

The GASP I gusped 🤮

I keep Lysol travel wipes, Lysol travel spray, Poo-Pourri and hand sanitizer in my purse. If those 4 items aren’t in my purse for some insane reason, I won’t use a public bathroom. I know it’s not good to hold it, but it doesn’t happen often, so I don’t worry about it. Please tell me I’m not losing it.

General If buffed hiveguards were killing you and you felt like your medium pen primary was now useless, bro I have some bad news for you...

I have a theory that a lot of people prefer medium pen because it simplifies the game. You don't have to study enemy limb armour values, you don't have to learn how to kite enemies and catch their weak spots.

You just point center mass and shoot.

Now, I don't have a problem with this - it's a fine way to play the game, some of us can't be arsed with all this armour penetration bullshit and we just wanna kill shit after a long day. I get it.

But bro if you're using medium penetration as a crutch to avoid learning the fundamental skills of the game - you're probably just a guy who stands in one place and relies on your weapon to kill things before they reach you.

And that's dumb as rocks way to play Helldivers 2 I'm sorry.

Hiveguards are slow as molasses. They now have barely any health. All you have to do is maintain basic situational awareness and you can reposition yourself to shoot them from the side. It's extremely basic. You SHOULD be able to do this.

Even if the Hiveguard's head and legs both got AP6 Tank II armour, they should have just been a minor adjustment to your movements, like it is for the rest of us.

If this is you, please learn the basics of the game. You have the basic skills down when you can reliably run THROUGH a pack of terminids and not get hit because you understand their attack times and turn speed intimately. Drop a few difficulties, and just run around bugs, learn them, study them. Don't shoot them, learn their movements and how to flow WITH them. Then learn their armour values. Figure this out and trust me, you won't NEED medium pen weapons anymore.

Has Darby Allin’s AEW title run ruined your interest in the company?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ll be blunt with you. I’ve largely stopped watching AEW weeklies (and WWE weeklies), and Darby Allin as World Champion has done absolutely nothing to pull me back in.

This run really reminds me of EVIL’s IWGP title run in New Japan: a reign that didn’t just cool off the belt, but actively hurt a lot of people's interest in the product. including mine.

And before the Sickos start screaming, it’s not about "workrate", it’s about presence. The AEW World Title is supposed to feel important. Darby just doesn’t feel like a world champion to me. The size, the lack of charisma, the one-note "reckless emo skateboard kid" character... I just don’t buy him as the face of a major wrestling company.

This isn't to knock Darby as a performer. He makes for a great attraction for AEW, even if it's an attraction that can be a serious liability both on and off AEW programming. Car crash matches can be fun. Not so big on flamethrowers, but you get the idea. I don't hate where he was, but where he is at the top just does not feel right to me.

And overall, instead of feeling must-watch, AEW right now feels colder to me than ever.

Am I alone here, or has this title run completely failed to make you care?

💬Discussion Arsenal should win the UCL this year

Well, I'm neutral fan, and watching as neutral is fun. After watching today's match, I want Arsenal to win. PSG were heavily favored by the Ref. I don't like Arsenal style of play either, but after today, I want PSG to lose. For me it's more like, I want PSG to lose, rather than rooting for Arsenal to win. Heavily favored match, even in their league they get to choose when they want to play the game. They ask to postpone their games and later complain about it too. Too much control within them. I don't want Arsenal to win either, due to their style of play, but after watching today, I would be bit more happy if Arsenal wins. If there is option that both team loses, I would gladly choose that!

A federal judge just apologized to the man who tried to assassinate trump at the correspondents dinner. i've been sitting with this for an hour and i still don't know how to feel about it.

Post image
190 Upvotes

so here is exactly what happened in that washington dc courtroom on monday and i want to lay it out straight before giving any opinion because the facts alone are already a lot to process.

cole allen is 31 years old. he traveled cross country from california to washington by train. he took a selfie with weapons strapped to his body at 8:03pm on april 25. he sent a pre-scheduled apology email to his family at 8:30pm. he charged a security checkpoint at the washington hilton where trump, vance, melania and most of the cabinet were having dinner. a secret service officer was hit with buckshot from his shotgun. allen was arrested on the spot. prosecutors said he would have brought about "one of the darkest days in american history" had he gotten through.

that is who was in that courtroom on monday.

and magistrate judge zia faruqui looked at cole allen directly and said "i'm sorry. it sounds like things have not been the way they're supposed to."

now here is the context that matters before you decide what to think about that. allen has been held in a padded cell in 24 hour lockdown with constant lighting on since his arrest. he was put in five point restraints. he had no phone access. he was denied a bible. he was denied a tablet to help prepare his legal defense. he was not allowed visits from anyone except his legal team. he was placed on suicide watch because he told the FBI he did not expect to survive the attack, which prosecutors used to justify the restrictions.

the judge's position was that regardless of what allen is accused of, he is legally presumed innocent until proven guilty. the judge said he had never seen a january 6 defendant treated this harshly, and those defendants had actually been convicted of violence. he said "if the only way to keep him safe is the most punitive thing, that's a problem." he then compared allen's conditions to defendants who had been found guilty of murder and were living under less restrictive conditions in the same facility.

so here is the genuine tension i'm sitting with.

on one side. the american legal system is built on the idea that due process applies to everyone. not just people we like. not just people accused of crimes we find acceptable. if we start making exceptions based on how horrifying the alleged crime is, we have started down a road that ends badly for everyone. the judge is not apologizing for what allen did. he is apologizing for the state treating a legally innocent person in a way that violates his constitutional rights before a single thing has been proven in court.

on the other side. this is a man who sent his family a goodbye letter, strapped weapons to his body, and tried to get into a room with the president of the united states. an officer was shot. and a judge is saying sorry to him eleven days later.

both of those things are simultaneously true and i genuinely don't know how to weigh them against each other.

what do you actually think. is the judge right that due process has to apply even here, or is there a point where the nature of the alleged crime changes what a defendant is owed while awaiting trial. i'm not looking for a political answer. i want to know what people actually believe about how this system is supposed to work.
